Careful what you wish for; Season 2 Ep. 17

It was late at night when the 118 got called for a new emergency. A man had fallen from a building and landed on a woman's car. The thing is that, he was still alive. The team arrived and met Athena who had arrived sooner.

"Barry Johnson, 57." Athena told Kate and Hen as they took their gear. "Seemed to have had some kind of existential crisis after lunch. Threw all his money off the roof and the decided to jump after it. Falls 20 stories and lives."

"20 stories? How is that even possible?" Buck asked the question the whole team had.

"We also got a few greedy bystanders with minor injuries." Athena said as she pointed to other citizens. Those citizens got hurt while trying to get the money. "Not sure you want to handle those."

"That's up to the cap." Hen said as Chimney got out of the LAFD car.

"Ah, interim cap. This is temporary until Bobby comes back." Kate said. "I wish he comes fast." She muttered.

"You keep telling yourself that, Kate." Chim snapped making Kate give him a 'seriously?' look on her face. He then looked at Barry. "All right, I'll take the spinal precaution."

As he said that, the rest of the team stood there like statues waiting for Chim to give them orders.

"Right, I'm the captain." Kate nodded at Chim's obvious observation. It was normal that he would forget that he was the captain but it got kind of annoying. "Umm, Hen, Kate, Eddie you're with him." Chim said as he pointed to Barry. The three made their way towards him. "Buck, go with John. Triage the minor injuries. And I'll get the Jaws."

"All right, Barry. I'm gonna give you something for the pain, okay?" Hen asked softly, giving time for Kate to put a collar around his neck. "It'll take the edge off, but you're probably still feel this."

"Can't you just knock me out?" Barry said, his voice hopless.

"Sorry, I need you to stay with me." Hen said as she gave him some morphine.

"Compound fracture, both legs." Eddie informed, he had got into the car a few minutes ago. "Hasn't lost bowel control."

"At least I got that going for me." Barry said.

"These are all positive, Barry." Kate assured. "Means your spine is probably okay."

"Ma'am you said you saw him fall?" Eddie asked the woman watching from beside them. She nodded, making him continue. "How did he land?"

"Feet first." The woman said, her eyes showing fear.

"Couldn't even do this right. This morphine is nice, though." Barry said.

"You have anyone you need us to call?" Kate asked as she, Hen and Eddie walked the man on a gurney towards the ambulance.

"My wife left me. My kids hate me. My only friend is suing me. Next time, I'll go head first." Barry said.

"You had all this money, though." Eddie pointed out. "Why'd you throw it out the window?"

"That money ruined my life." Barry said, allowing Kate and Eddie to give their places to other paramedics. "A year ago, I'd have thought it solved all my problems. Just multiplied them."

"Wait, what-what happened last year?" The woman who had talked to Eddie asked. Kate noticed that she had a lottery ticket.

"I won the lottery." Barry said as the doors of the ambulance closed.

"Careful what you wish for." Chimney shrugged.

"Yeah, I don't think you're gonna need that anymore." Kate said as the woman started riping the ticket off.

--------------------------------------

Right, the interim captain thing. A few days ago, after the bank rob case, the police found things about Bobby's past life in Minnesota that made him get suspended from working at the station which made the chief decide who would be the captain until he came back. The chief was deciding between Kate and Chim, but Kate didn't want to as it was too many responsibilities and, as Chim has been on the station for the longest, she didn't mind at all. That also made the team dislike some things that Chim would do.

The next day, Kate knocked on Bobby's door. He opened it motioning for her to come in.

"We need to talk." She said as she walked to the living room. She looked at the dining table that was messy. She turned around to face him. "Am I bothering you? Because I can come another time..."

"You're not bothering me." Bobby said as he walked to sit on the table's chair.

"Okay, good. When are you coming back?" She asked as she sat in front of him.

"I don't know, Kate. I-I might not be." Bobby said.

"Yeah, I can't accept that. We need to get you unsuspended." Kate said with a serious expresion. "Maybe I could talk to the chief. You know, testify on your behalf. Wait, that's something Buck would say. Anyways, we really need you, Bobby. The place doesn't work without you."

All the 118 firefighters were lining up, making Buck ask confused like the rest of them.

"So we're doing lineups now?"

"Stow it, Buckley." Chim snapped, making Kate frown in annoyence.

"Kate, it's been two shifts. I thought that having Chimney be in charge would be easier on all of you. He's your friend." Bobby said, confused.

"Chimney is my friend. Interim Captain Han? Not so much." Kate said, crossing her arms on her chest as she leaned on her chair, ready to tell Bobby another story.

"So, listen up." Chimn said as he paced back and foward around the team, stopping in front of Buck. "Because the word of the day is 'hose maintenance.'"

"Okay, I'm out." Hen said, shoking her head and dragging Kate by her wrist. She shrugged at Chimeny before turning to face Hen as they walked away.

"Thank you." She said as she fist bumped Hen.

"Okay, maybe he was just being... conscientious." Bobby said.

"Conscientious? Or mad with power?" Kate asked.

Kate was watching Buck and Eddie who were bending the hose while cleaning the engine.

"That's not the most efficient way to do it, guys." Chim said as he walked towards the duo, making Kate roll her eyes and turn around to watch Eddie and Buck get by her side.

"Look, a week ago, Chimney was one of you. Now he's responsible for all of you. It's an adjustment for everybody." Bobby said.

Kate sighed. "For exactly how long will we be adjusting, Cap? Because Responsible Chimney is driving us crazy."

"Get it nice and tight. It's a clean line. Watching, Buckley?" Chim said as he bended the hose.

"Yep." Buck said, impatient.

"It's not good. He's not you, Cap." Kate said as she leaned her arms on the table.

"You shouldn't expect him to be." Bobby said with a small smile to ease her nerves.

"You should tell him that." Kate said after sighing.

Kate, Eddie and Buck were downstairs waiting for dinner while chatting.

"Hey, you guys smell that?" Eddie asked as the three sniffed the air.

"It smells like... something burnt." Kate pointed.

They started walking upstairs to find the food burnt. They stopped as they watched Hen look at them and pointing a finger at Chim like it was a 'it was him' sign.

"What's for dinner?" Buck asked.

Chim stared at him until he called a pizzaria. The boxes arrived in a small amount of time making the team seperate them through the big dining table. Eddie and Kate took two slices of pizza and started walking towards the couch while chatting until they heard Chimney's voice.

"Hey, hey hey!" They stopped on their tracks and turned around to face him. "The 118 eats dinner as a family, even if it's crappy pizza. Sit down, Diaz, Buckley."

The two looked confused at each other before looking back at Chim.

"Sorry, Cap." Kate said as they sat down.

"Won't happen again." Eddie said sitting down next to her.

Buck patted Kate's back with pity.

"We just wanted pizza on the couch, you know?" Kate asked and sighed. "Then we just sat there. We didn't know what to say. It was awkward."

"That's understandable." Bobby said.

"Right. Well, thank you for your time, I should get going, I have to stop by Eddie's to give Carla's computer back." Kate said as they got up from their seats.

"Where are we going with Eddie?" Bobby said with a smirk.

"What do you mean?" Kate asked, confused.

"I know it, Kate." His smirk growing bigger.

She stared at him, her mouth slighly opened as her eyes widened. "Hen told you?! I can't belive her!"

"It's okay, Kate. I'd like to see you together." Bobby said with a smile now.

She smiled to herself and sighed, her face seemed hopeless. "Promise you won't tell anyone?"

"Promise." He said.

"Thanks, Bobby." She said.

"Ah, you're welcome." He said as he pulled her into a hug.

They pulled away and Kate got back to her car. She went to the Diaz's house. Surprisingly, Shannon was the one who opened the door for her.

"Hi." Shannon said, confused.

"Hi." Kate said, also confused. "Hum, is Eddie home?"

"No, he went to the park with Chris." Kate nodded. "Why?"

"I just need to give him Carla's computer back. Do you mind giving it to him?" Kate asked as she took the computer out of her tote bag.

"Yeah, sure." Shannon said as she took the computer from Kate's hand.

"Thanks." She smiled.

An awkward silence filled the air until Kate spoke again.

"Well, it was good seeing you."

Liar. Kate thought to herself.

"Yeah, see you." Shannon said as she closed the door, the sign Kate needed to allow her to get back to the car and go far away from that house.

Looks like someone hasn't divorced yet... She thought to herself.

--------------------------------------

On that aftrenoon on their shift, they got called to a chocolate factory where a man had fallen inside a bowl of melted chocolate. They got there and a woman, whose name was Carol, immediately lead them to where the man had fallen.

"We tried pulling him out but he was struggling so much that he sank even deeper. Our chocolate is the richest in he country, but unfortunately, that also makes it the heaviest." Carol informed until they got to the bowl.

They could only see his head which was better than not seeing him at all.

"Sir? Sir, how are you hanging in there?" Chim asked.

"W-W-Warm." The man said in between breaths.

"We had to leave the heat on. My foreman was afraid if we didn't that the whole batch would just harden up." Carol informed.

"Then we'd be chiseling him out." Chim completed. "All right, let's get to work."

Eddie and Buck placed a ladder on the bowl, making it look like a bridge. Hen and was able to reach the man and check his neck.

"The pressure on his body is slowing his circulation. We don't get him out of here soon, he may lose consciouness." Hen informed.

"All right, boys, let's pull him out." Chim ordered.

"Here, can you reach your hands above the surface?" Eddie asked the man.

"No." He said, letting out a desperate sob.

"All right, we're gonna have to grab him under his arms." Buck said as he climbed the ladder to get above the man. "Okay, ready?" He asked Eddie who nodded.

"Pull on three." Buck said as he and Eddie put his hands under his arms. "One, two, three."

They started to pull him, but he was too heavy due to the pressure making Buck slip and almost fall.

"Oh!" Kate said as she held Buck to prevent him from falling.

"What's happening here?" Eddie said as he grabbed onto the man.

"Physiscs is happening here. You're creating a low-pressure pocket when you pull him up, and then that pocket is pulling him back down." Kate explained quickly.

"Great. So basically chocolate quicksand." Buck said.

"Okay, everybody just stop for a second." Chim said, causing the four to look at him. "Hen, take out an 02 tank, rip off the mask, create an air tube. Kate help her. It'll buy us some time if he goes completely under."

"Time for what?" Hen asked as she and Kate made their way to get the 02 tank.

"For me to think." Chim said.

As Hen and Kate created the tube, the boys tried to hold on the man so he wouldn't drown in chocolate.

"Here, try to... try to bite this tube with your tongue so you don't lose it." Hen said as she started to put the tube in his mouth. "Okay, what now, Captain?" Hen asked as she and Kate looked around, the rest of them copying their actions. Chim was nowhere to be found!

"Did our cap just run away?" Kate asked.

"I think he went that way." A kid said as he pointed to their left.

The man started to sink and the boys didn't have time to grab him in time.

"Breathe. Keep breathing, keep breathing."Kate said to the man as he sank.

"Coming through!" Chim said as he held a big funnel with what looked like milk.

He used a hose that started to pour the liquid.

"The hell?" Hen asked confused.

"It's cocoa butter. Tempers the chocolate, decreases the viscosity." Both girls look at each other confused before looking back at Chim. "What? Stir." He said as he handed two big spatulas and they started to stir.

"Yeah. Keep-keep mixing. It's working! It's working." Buck said. "Okay, here he comes"He said as he and Eddie were finally able to pull him out.

"More, more, more." Eddie said.

After a few minutes, the man was out and ready to go to the hospital on a gurney.

"Quick thinking, Cap." Eddie said as he passed through Chim.

"That was something." Buck said.

Hen and Kate stood in front of him.

"You weren't so sure that I could do it, were you?" Chim asked.

"You called Bobby, didn't you?" Kate asked with a smirk.

"I went down to the... I turned on the..." He tried to make excuses with no use. "He's a chef. A good captain utilizes all his resources."

"Mh-hmm." Hen said before her and Kate started walking to the fire truck.

"It's not cheating." He added.

--------------------------------------

A bomb. A bomb exploded on a porch of a house. Athena was already at the scene when the team pulled at the house.

"Mail bomb. Wife's in rough shape, but she's still in one piece. The house hasn't been cleared yet. Bomb squad's still a couple of minutes out." Athena informed as they made their way to the porch.

"Copy that, let's move." Chim said as they rushed to the porch.

"She's not breathing. I tried talking to her, but she wouldn't answer." The husband said.

"She can't hear you because her eardrums are blown out." Kate informed him.

"All right, let's turn her." Chim ordered.

"On it."

They turn the woman. Hen and Kate look at each other as they see Chimney doing the work by himself.

"Kate and I can handle this." Hen said to him but he chose to ignore.

"Breathing's shallow. We're looking at a bilateral pneumothorax. We don't release the pressure, she could suffocate."

"I did my share of these in combat." Eddie informed to distract Chim as he joined the list of people who could help instead of Chimney.

"Got some fentanyl, slow drip." Chim insisted.

"Chim, there's post-attcak protocol. You're the captain." Kate said.

"I'm also the most experienced paramedic on-site." Chim snapped maing him stop what he was doing. "Four-inch catheter, ten-gauge." He said to the girls. "All right, Buck and Eddie, there could be a secondary device. We need to get everyone off the'X'"

"Sir, is there anyone else in the house?" Buck asked.

"Uh, no, no. Is she gonna make it? Please tell me she's gonna be okay." The husband asked.

"Why don't you come with us?" Buck said as he and Eddie struggled to get the man checked out and away from the scene.

"We can check you out." Eddie said.

"No, no, no she has to know that we weren't just going out to dinner. I have tickets for us to Fiji."

"You can tell her that later, I promise." Eddie assured.

Chim, Kate and Hen were able to get the woman safe and on a gurney to go to the hospital. The bomb squad had arrived moments before she was set on a gurney.

Eddie had closed the doors and was now staring at the couple inside. Them man seemed to have  said 'I love you' to his wife.

"Hey, you okay?" Kate asked, concern filling her eyes, making Eddie snap out of his thoughts.

"Yeah, yeah, I'm fine." He said, showing her a smile. She smiled back as they made their way to the truck.

--------------------------------------

That night, Kate was watching a show to let her go to bed and fall asleep as the next day she had an early shift. She was almost falling asleep when her phone buzzed. She groaned as she picked it up from the bedside table. As she picked it up, she saw that it was Eddie. She answered it.

"Hey." She greeted.

"Hi. Are you home?" He asked quickly.

"Umm, yeah. Why? Is everyhing okay?" She asked, concern filling her voice.

"No." He said, his voice seemed like it carried hurt and sadness. Then she remembered when she called Aaron who asked her if she was okay and her answer was the same simple word she had just heard. "Could I come over?"

"Yeah, sure." He hung up.

Ten minutes passed and a knock was heard. She walked towards the door opening it to see a sad looking Eddie.

"Hey, come on in." She said softly as he walked in and shutting the door closed behind her. "What's going on?"

"I just had dinner with Shannon." He said as he looked at her.

"Oh..." She said. She felt sad that he didn't like her the way she liked him.

"She-she asked for a divorce." He said as he sat on the couch. Kate copyed his actions, sitting beside him.

"I thought that's what you wanted." Kate said, confused.

"I thought it was too, but then..." He looked at Kate who waited for an answer. "I don't know. I've been having a rollercoster of emotions I can't even explain."

"I don't understand, you said you wanted a divorce." Kate said.

"No, I mean, yes, I mean- I don't know. A few days ago, she said she was pregnant." He said as shock fell on Kate's face.

"What?" She asked. "When were you planning on telling me that? I'm kind of your wingwoman here, don't you think?"

"Well, yeah, but I freaked out and realized... that I was making the same mistake again. Not divorcing because of a kid. Now tonight, she told me she wasn't pregnant and asked for a divorce."

"Do you want a divorce?" Kate asked.

He stared at her for a few moments. "Yeah."

A wave of relief flew throught Kate's spine.

"Then here's your chance." She said.

"Yeah, I guess you're right." Eddie said.

"I'm always right." She teased.

He chuckled a little before a comfortable silence filled the room. She looked at Eddie who was already looking at her, his eyes studying her face. His gaze drifted from her eyes to her lips a couple of times, her gaze doing the same thing. He started to lean closer until his phone began to ring, breaking the moment. They looked away, Eddie at his phone, Kate at the TV that was still on her show quietly.

"It's Carla, I left Chris with her." Eddie informed as she nodded. "I should go."

She hummed as they made their way to the door.

"Thanks for helping me." Eddie said as she opened the door for him.

"Yeah, anytime." She smiled at him.

"Good night, Kate." He said as he walked out of the apartment.

"Good night, Eds." She said before closing the door. She smiled at herself, thinking about the moment the two had just had.

--------------------------------------

On their next shift, their first emergency was a car accident. A car apparentely drove through a crowd of people at a crosswalk.

"All right, make way. LAFD." Chimney ordered to the people around. "All right, John, triage the minor injuires. Hen, Buck, you're with me. Kate, Eddie check the driver."

Kate rushed to the passengers seat as Eddie went to check the driver.

"Ma'am, can you hear me?" Eddie asked as he took a collar out of his gear bag.

"I, um... I tried to stop, but I didn't see any of them. Are they okay?" The woman said, her voice breaking.

"Yeah, we're taking care of the others, ma'am. Right now, we need to see if you're okay." Kate said softly.

"Umm, my-my neck hurts. Oh, God." She said.

"Okay, ma'am, we're gonna put you this on you as a precaution until the doctors at the hospital can check you out." Eddie said as he put the collar around the womans neck.

Kate got out of the passengers seat to take the morphine out of her bag.

"Th-There was a lady. Is-Is she all right?" The woman asked.

Kate drifted her gaze from the woman on the car to the woman on the ground. She saw who it was and concern and shock filled her. It was Shannon.

"Kate? What's going on?" She looked at Eddie, her mouth slightly open. Eddie's gaze drifted to the woman on the ground. Kate motioned another firefighters to take over them as she followed Eddie.

"Eddie. Eddie, wait... Eddie." He looked at her as she tried to get him away. She ran behind him, Chim blocking his away.

"Eddie, let me handle this." He said. Eddie's eyes never leaving his wife's.

"How bad is it?" He asked.

"It's bad." Chim said, his hands on Eddie's chest to prevent him from going any further.

"Spinal injury?"

"Maybe worse." There and then, Eddie made his way, bending down next to Shannon.

"Shannon." Eddie said a little higher than a whisper.

"Hey." Shannon said as she looked at Eddie. Kate stood next to him, althought she was standing and not bent down. "Are you here?"

"I'm here." Eddie said.

"Oh, God. This is so embarrassing." Shannon said.

"Vitals trending downward." Hen informed.

"All right, let's get her on the backboard! Get her transported, now!" Chim ordered.

They managed to get her on the gurney. Eddie stood up next to Kate, his eyes never leaving Shannon has she was transported on the gurney. Kate climbed up the ambulance after Hen.

"I'm riding with her." Eddie said.

"She's decompensating." Kate informed.

"We got to intubate her." Hen added.

"Eddie." Chim said, blocking Eddie's way into the ambulance. "We put that tube in, there's a good chance it never comes back out."

Eddie stared at him for a few seconds, silently telling Chim not to intubate her. His eyes showed a mix of sadness and anger.

"Hen, stop. Don't intubate her." Chim ordered. "Not yet."

"Cap..." Hen said.

"I know." Chim said before turning to Eddie. "He knows. Get in there and say goodbye to your wife."

Eddie climbed the ambulance and in a few minutes, it was on the road. He held Shannons hand as she sobbed. Tears started forming on Eddie's eyes.

"I don't feel anything. That can't be good, right?" Shannon said. She gasped for air as she spoke between breaths. "Leaving again. I'm so sorry. I'd love to... have a little more time."

"Just be silent." Eddie said, his voice breaking. "God, I love you. Christopher loves you so much."

Those words made Kate's eyes tear up from thinking about Chris not having a mother.

"I... love you... both."  Shannon said. The monitor flatened.

"Hen, Kate, go." Chim ordered.

"Intubating." Hen said, as she and Kate started intubating her.

Eddie just stared at her with a numb face.

They arrived at the hospital where they took Shannon to the autopsy room. Eddie, Hen and Kate watched as she went in. They weren't able to save her, something Eddie already knew it would happen. They let him a few minutes with her as he told his team to go to the waiting room. Kate sat with concern filling every part of her body. After a few moments, Eddie returned with a bag with Shannon's clothes. The team made a corridor as everyone watched his red, puffy eyes. He looked at Kate, her own teary eyes meeting his as walked past them until he reached Bobby who had just came in. They hugged each other for a few seconds.

They got back to the station in silence, no one was sure of what to say. Eddie immediately went home to give Christopher the bad news. Kate offered to go with him, but he denied politely. Despite Kate not fancying the woman, it was heartbreaking to see Eddie hurt.

They returned home. Kate returned home. She walked in, closing the door behind her and kicking her shoes off, her bags falling to the ground as she started sobbing. It was sad, indeed.

A few hours passed and she had calmed down when she heard a knock on her door. She walked towards it, confused to see who it was. Eddie.

"Hey-" She said but got cut off by Eddie hugging her tightly as he started sobbing. "It's okay, it's okay. I'm sorry. I'm sorry." She said as they slowly sat on the ground holding onto each other. She started crying a little.

"I'm sorry I didn't hug you." He said, guilt filling his voice.

"Don't worry, it's okay. You didn't have to." They pulled away. She cupped her hands on his cheeks as they looked at each other. "I'm sorry." She kissed his forehead as he leaned on her chest, breaking down. She hugged him tightly. "It's okay."

Hello, hello! This was a rollercoaster, geez! I didn't like writing Shannon's death, it was so sad. I cried, I have to admit. Despite that, I quite liked this chapter. I didn't really know how to end it, I just wanted Kate and Eddie to have this moment because I love seeing her conforting him. By the way, I won't be able to update you for some time as I'm having some family issues. Hope you liked this chapter and thank you so so so much for reading and voting. See you!!
