Broken; Season 2, Ep. 14
It has been three weeks since all those things with Doug and Maddie happened, to be exact, since Kate and Chimney got stabbed. Those were three hard weeks to go through as Kate didn't have anything to do except sitting on the couch eating popcorn and watching a film or just passing by the firehouse and some other stuff. She kept having nightmares about her visions and her past though. Nothing that she wasn't used to. She missed work, but dog days were over because the weeks had passed. She was finally back and she started pretty calmly as the first thing she had to do was basically listening to Bobby teaching Harry's class about the firehouse. Oh, and her favorite part, using the megaphone as the last thing on the presentation. She was upstairs with Hen waiting for the bells to ring.
"Don't panic, because panic can be more dangerous than flames, toxing fumes or a sucking chest wound." Bobby said. "And all you need are three numbers. Can anyone tell me what they are?"
"911!" The kids said at the same time.
"Yes. Now does anyone know what happens when you dial those numbers?" Bobby asked. Harry raised his hand to answer. "Harry Grant."
"They call a firetruck." Harry answered correctly.
"That's right. And now, what if I told you that a big brain computer helps you when you dial 911? It is called CAD." Bobby said as he pointed to the big screen. "Computer Aided Dispatch. Let's say you, Harry call in an emergency. Can you name one?"
"The library sets on fire, and all our homework assignments are burned up."
Kate and Hen laughed a little at Harry's emergency. The girls kept listening to Bobby until Hen spoke up.
"So, how are feeling? Coming back to the 118?" Hen asked with a smile.
"I feel great, you know? Being back home. All I did for three whole weeks was sitting on the couch and hanging out a little with Chim until he started talking about Maddie and all. I mean, I love my sister, it's just that when Chim starts talking about her, he kinda ignores the world around him." Kate said looking at Hen.
"And that guy?" Hen asked with a smirk.
"What guy?" Kate asked confused. Hen motion her head in the diection of Eddie. "Oh, that guy. Yeah, we haven't talked much." She lied.
Actually, they've been talking. A lot. And Hen knew about it. Kate had also been picking Christopher up at school. They'd stay the whole afternoon waiting for Eddie to come back and that also gave some free time to Carla.
Hen scoffed. "Yeah, right. Has he talked to Shannon?"
"I don't know. Why don't you ask him that?" She asked with a playful smile.
"Girl. Just tell me!" Hen said.
Kate sighed. "All right, fine. He hasn't."
Hen rolled her eyes in frustration. "Oh, my god. Is he stupid or something?" She joked.
Kate chuckles a little. "Just give him some time, all right? He'll talk to her." She said. After Bobby's last sentence, they knew that that was their time. "Oh, it's our turn."
The bells ring and Hen started talking through the megaphone. Bobby, Eddie and Buck looked up at her and Kate. "Station 118, station 118. Please dispatch a fire engine and an ambulance to the Meadowbrook School Library immediatly."
"Harry Grant didn't do his homework." Kate finished by joking on her own megaphone.
Both girls laughed and the trio downstairs started showing the firetrucks to the kids.
------------------------------------------
Two hours later, the 118 was warned that there was a power cut at the dispatch so they had to:
"Okay, everybody, we are in Tactical Emergency Mode. That means we will not be at the station today. We will be driving all around the district to make sure that we are ready for anything that comes our way." Bobby explained as the team walked to the fire truck.
"Cap, you do realize we work here, right? We're trained professionals, not fifth-graders." Hen said with a smile as Kate and Eddie made their way inside the truck.
"Yeah, right?" Buck teased.
"Sorry." Bobby said with a small smile.
A few minutes in the rode, the team talks while driving around LA.
"Hey, Cap. You ever seen a breakdown like this before?" Eddie asked through the headphones.
Bobby looked back from the passengers seat and answered "Once in St. Paul. Blizzard took out the power grid around the call center and backup generator."
"I've been throught, like, three of these. I'm surprised they don't happen more often, the way the city funds us." Hen said. "Department's held together by chewing gum and spit."
"Hey, come on, I like these old trucks." Buck said.
"Uh-huh. I like them when they run." Eddie said making Kate nod her head.
"118 Engine and Rescue, please report your location." They heard Josh throught the radio.
"We're on Granville, approaching Miracle Mile District from the west." Bobby answered.
"Please proceed to 9590 Hillcrest. Cross street is Meadows. Vehicle collided with 58-year-old cyclist male." Josh informed.
"Copy. 118, Battalion Seven en route." Bobby said.
They arrived at the scene where Athena was already, but another fire truck was already there. The team gets out of the truck anyways.
"Dispatch, this is 118. 122 is already on the scene." Bobby informed.
"Copy that. Maintain Emergency Protocol." Josh said.
"Copy that. 118 on the move."
Kate sighed and the team got back in the truck.
"That's how it's gonna be all day." She said.
Their next call was at a hotel where a woman was in labor. Or well, it was supposed to be there...
"Dispatch, this is 118. There is nothing here." Bobby said.
"No pregnant woman?" Linda, on the other side of the radio, asked.
"There's no building. It's and empty lot." Bobby informed.
"Stand by 118."
"118, you're gonna need to proceed to San Vincente, east of the Miracle Mile District. Nearest cross street is Sixth." That was Maddie who informed.
"Copy that."
They arrived at the hotel where they heard a woman screaming in pain.
"Where the hell have you guys been?" The husband asked.
"We are fighting a system outage, sir. We apologize for the delay." Bobby informed the man. "Hen, you're up." He said, making Hen bend down next to the woman. "Eddie, Kate start fluids."
"We can't just have the baby here in the lobby. That's not how this is supposed to happen."
"Roger, this is pretty much the way it's happened throughout human history." The woman said before groaning in pain.
"Hi, I'm Hen. What's your name?" Hen asked softly.
"Sonia. 39 weeks pregnant. 38 years old, which makes me a geriatric pregnancy. God, I hate that word." Sonia said.
"Word doesn't matter. You're still gonna get a baby out of it." Bobby said.
"I can't believe I'm finally gonna meet him. Here. In the lobby." Sonia said and laughed.
"That's all right. You're doing great, okay? Now, on this next contraction we're gonna push, okay, Sonia?" Hen said.
Sonia's smile faded and she started groaning.
"Sonia? Sonia?" Hen asked.
"There's something wrong with the baby." Sonia said staring at Hen.
"No, no, no, no, no. You're baby's fine." Hen reassured. "You'll-you'll be able to see it for yourself in just a minute."
"No! No, this was a mistake. All of it. Roger was right to panic. Look, we can't do this. I can't... I can't do this. I shouldn't have this child." Sonia said while panting.
"No, no, no. Sonia, look at me. Look at me. Look at me. All you gotta do is push. All you need to do: push." Hen said in an attept of calming Sonia down. "Push."
Sonia closed her eyes and took a breath. She opened her eyes again and started pushing.
"Good. Good, keep pushing. Keep pushing! Keep pushing! He's coming! He's coming!" Hen said. "He's here." The air filled with child cries. Kate sighed in relief and smiled.
"Baby's got a set of pipes." Eddie said and chuckled as he cut the umbilical cord.
"We're gonna take you to the warmest place in this lobby, okay?" Hen said while looking at the baby. She started to bend down next to Sonia. "Which is gonna be right here..." She then looked at Sonia whose eyes were closed.
"Hen. I got the baby." Buck said.
"Kate, take over." Bobby ordered making Hen stand worried next to him.
"All right." Kate bent down next to Sonia. "Sonia? Sonia?"
"What's hapenning? What's hapening?" Roger asked as he got pushed away by Buck.
"It's okay. Roger. Roger." Buck said. "Hey, hey, hey, she's in good hands. Okay, right now, he needs yours." Buck said as he handed Roger the baby.
"Blood pressure went off a cliff." Eddie informed.
"Sonia, can you hear me?" Kate asked. "Cyanosis." She informed.
"Can someone tell me what's happening here?" Roger asked.
"Your wife has gone into shock." Buck answered.
Eddie put two fingers on Sonia's neck. "I lost her pulse."
"She's in cardiac arrest. I'm starting compressions." Kate said as she started to do compressions on the woman's chest.
"Okay, let's get her transported to L.A. General now." Bobby ordered.
"Hey, Cap, we're gonna need another ambulance for the baby." Buck said.
"Dispatch, this is Engine 118." Bobby started on his radio.
"Stand by, 118."
"No more standing by. Guys, let's get her on the gurney. Let's go." Bobby demanded.
They started to drive to the hospital.
"Kate, it's been 12 minutes. Let's switch." Bobby said.
"I got it." Kate said as she keps doing compressions. She panted heavily but she wasn't going to let that woman die.
"Kate, let me take over." Bobby said.
"No, I got it." She kept insisting. "She's not dying because somebody blew a fuse. Come on Sonia. I know you're a fighter."
"She is. She was. She was responding when we got there, and then..." Bobby said.
"Sudden despair and fear and anxiety." Kate said between pants.
"Birth was going like clockwork, even for a geriatric pregnancy. Then rapid loss of BP." Bobby said.
Kate kept panting heavily. "Amniotic embolism, Cap. She's hemorrhaging. The hospital needs to prep for this. It's a massive transfusion protocol."
"Well, we can't radio, but we can still call." Bobby said as he called the hospital.
"L.A. General. Operator."
"This is Fire Captain Bobby Nash. I need the ER charge nurse call. We've got a patient coming your way."
They finally arrived at the hospital. Buck opened the ambulance doors. Kate kept doing compressions while Bobby walked towards the nurse.
"Come on, Sonia. Come on." Kate said.
"How long has she been down?" The nurse asked.
"Uh, 14... no 15 minutes." Bobby informed.
"Okay. Call it." The nurse said.
"No. Come on, Sonia." Kate said.
"Kate." Bobby called out.
"Come on, Sonia." Kate insisted.
"Kate." Bobby called again.
"Come on."
"Kaitlyn." Bobby called once more time.
Kate did some more compressions before giving up. She panted heavily. She tried to take deep breaths to calm herself down as she sat on the ambulance's bench.
I can't believe she died. She thought to herself. Why?
"How is she?" Roger ran with his baby on his hands.
"Guys." Bobby said to the firefighters how were taking the gurney out of the ambulance.
"What's wrong?"
"I am so sorry." Bobby said.
Me too... Kate thought to herself. She started to walk outside the ambulance standing between Buck and Eddie. Both boys looked at her with concerned eyes. She gave them a fake reassuring smile. Eddie put a gentle hand on her shoulder as tears started forming on her eyes.
"You were right. He's perfect." Roger said to his wife. Tears streamed down his face. "I wish you could see him. I know I was scared and worried that we weren't ready for this, and I am damn sure not ready to do this without you. But I will. I'm gonna figure it out."
Roger kissed Sonia on her forehead. A tear rolled on Kate's right cheek. That was a heartbreaking scene.
Until the monitor started beeping again. Hen rushed towards the gurney and put two fingers on Sonias neck. "She's got a pulse."
Kate felt a wave of relief down her spine. Sonia was alive.
"Go. Go! Get her inside." The nurse said as the rest fo the nurses started dragging the gurney away.
Roger and his son behind them. Roger turned around to face the team and said. "Thank you."
With those words, Kate stumbled on her feet. Eddie wrapped an arm around her shoulders to keep her steady. She let out a breath she didn't know she was holding. "That was amazing." He said.
"Now, that was a miracle." Buck said.
------------------------------------------
While they were driving around, everything seemed normal. Kate kept a little shoken up from the previous call though. It's not like she was gonna forget about it soon. One more thing to add on the nightmare list. After a few minutes, Buck got a call from Chimney.
"Oh, hey. It's Chim." Buck said. A small smile appeared on Kate's face. She missed working with him. "Hey, Chim. How's it going?" Buck asked. "Uh, we're crossing Robertson for the 320th time. What? You heard it on the scanner?" Buck asked confused which made Eddie and Kate look at each other with a frown. Buck hung up and put his headphones back. "Hey, Cap. Uh, Doheny Park is going up in flames. Chim thinks it's a gas main break. We're close, right?" Buck asked.
"Close enough. Let's do it." Bobby said and they started driving.
When they arrived, Bobby alerted the dispatch. "Dispatch, this is Captain 118. We're at Doheny Park. Multiple residential structure fires. Send everything you can."
"Copy that, 118. I'm trying to find additional resouces for you, but you might be on your own for the next 15, maybe 20 minutes."
Kate sighed. 20 minutes is a lot of time when it comes to situations like these. They parked the engine and a man rushed towards it calling for help.
"Help! Help! You got to help! My son is trapped upstairs!"
"Do you know where? Which room?" Bobby asked.
"No, no I haven't seen him." The man said.
Kate and Eddie scan the house to look for the kid until Eddie finds him. "Cap, I see him! Upstairs window!"
Another explosion inside the house. The man and his daughter started running towards the house but Kate and Eddie stopped them from going any further.
"Sir. Sir!" Eddie calls.
Kate and Eddie called for two firefighters who rushed to stop the two civillians from running inside the house.
"Cap!" Kate called.
"Yeah?"
"Hydrant's gone. The only water we got is in the truck. It's not even enough to put out one house." Eddie informed.
"Okay, keep trying dispatch. Gas company needs to shut down Doheny Park. I want a two-mile radius around Lambourne Place." Bobby ordered.
"Copy that." Eddie and Kate contact dispatch.
"Dispatch, this is firefighter Buckley, 118. We need Doheny Park gas shut down." Kate said into her radio.
"Copy that, we will contact gas company. It might take 10 minutes or so." Josh said on the other side.
"Copy that." Kate said before they started walking towards Bobby. "10 minutes..." She sighs.
"Relax, it's gonna work." Eddie reassured in which she nodded.
Buck had started to go up the ladder when they walked to Bobby.
"10 minutes, Cap." Kate informed in which Bobby nodded.
Another explosion. Sweat started to drip from Kate's forehead. Anxiety was winning.
Buck spots the kid, Alex, calling his dad. Kate's concerned eyes drove between Buck and the window. While Buck was almost there, the ladder broke and Buck was only hanging on it with one hand.
"Buck!" Kate yelled and started rushing for Buck along with Bobby. Buck jumped down and stood while looking up. "Are you okay?" She asked concerned.
"Yeah. I'm good." Buck said.
The next thing they knew was Eddie climbing up the house from a tube.
"Hey! Eddie. Eddie! What the hell are you doing?" Kate asked in confusion and concern.
"I feel like, if I ever did that, you would yell at me." Buck said, making Kate and Bobby look at him with an unamused face.
They watched as Eddie managed his way inside the room by breaking the window.
"He's insane." Kate said. She didn't like what she was watching.
"Uh, Cap, I got him. Alive but unconscious. I'm prepping for evac." Eddie said on the radio.
Hen rushed towards them. "Cap, gas guys just showed up. They're shutting it down. All neighbors are present and accouted for. Two more engines are rolling in, but it makes no sense if there's no water pressure."
Another explosion came out of the house, causing them to look up. Kate's heart started pouding like it wanted to get out. She cursed under her breath.
"Cap! Negative on evac. Pinned down, south side of the house." Eddie said.
Kate's eyes widened in fear and concern. If you die, I'm gonna kill you, you son of a bitch. She thought to herself.
Buck rushed to the ladder once again. "I'm gonna take an extinguisher! I can make that jump, I can help Eddie." After that, he started going up the stairs of the firetruck, but Bobby stopped him.
"No, wait."
Hen, Kate and Buck looked up to where Bobby was looking. It's an airplane. An airplane full of water.
"Wait, is that..." Hen started.
"Incoming. Everybody, take cover. Under the trucks! Now! Go, go!" Bobby ordered everyone around as people started to go under the table.
"Under the trucks, get down!" Kate ordered the man and his daughter.
"Hunker down. 217 is inbound." Bobby warned Eddie.
"Seriously?"
Once under the trucks they waited for the water to pour on top of them. They heard as the airplane got closer. Kate couldn't stop thinking about Eddie inside the house. Every muscle on her body felt tense.
She snapped into reality when a huge thud invaded the air. The water. It fell from the sky.
Once it was safe to leave from under the trucks, Kate immeadiatly left and looked at the house that was out of flames. No sign of Eddie. She stared at the house waiting for someone to get out, waiting for Eddie to get out with the boy.
"Eddie, do you copy?" Bobby asked.
No response. In fact, they didn't need one. They saw a figure holding another.
Eddie and Alex.
Buck and Kate sighed in relief and rushed towards them, Hen and Bobby behind.
"Alex?" The dad asked. They put Alex down on a gurney. He began to open his eyelids and started coughing. "Oh, thank God."
Kate stood next to Eddie, Buck on the other side of him.
"What's up with the Spider-Man routine?" Buck asked now amused that his friend was okay. Kate smiled softly.
"I don't know. I just did it. And prayed a lot." Eddie answered making Kate to chuckle.
"Yeah, looks like someone was listening." Bobby said.
The team started walking, with Alex on a gurney, towards the ambulance, leaving Kate and Eddie behind. Kate punched Eddie on his arm. He brought a hand up to where she hit him.
"Ouch!" Eddie hissed.
"Never do that again, do you understand?" Kate said as she pointed a threatening finger to his face with a serious expression.
Eddie chuckled and pulled her into a side hug. "Fine, but I can't promise you anything."
She couldn't help but chuckle a little as they started to walk towards the firetruck to get ready to go back to the firehouse.
