Ch. 23

I have somewhat of an idea what I'm doing.

----------

George POV

I had been at Ash's side since we won.

"Hey Georgie. What are you doing here? Go fight." She mumbled, still woozy from the blood loss.

"We won, Ash. There's no need to fight anymore." I chortled.

"We.... we did?"

"Yes. The nurse says she doesn't know if you'll pull through, though, so I want to say something."

But before the words could leave my mouth she interrupted.

"I will pull through. A not-so-wise Frenchman once told me 'Optimism is a powerful thing. Use it.'"

I chuckled at the thought of Ash and Laf looking into the sunset speaking in only inspirational sayings.

"Still... Let me say what I was going to say before you interrupted me. Ash, I don't know what I would do without you. I felt so empty seeing you laying there looking so helpless. I.. I think I'm in love with you Ashley Hamilton." I stuttered.

She looked speechless only for a moment before a smirk grew on her face.

"Took you long enough." She whispered as she pulled me into an unforgettable kiss.

----------

Alex POV

We had won!

America was ours. A rich land full of possibilities.

"Alex, I need you for a moment." I turned around to see The General.

"Yes, sir."

"Come with me. There's someone you need to meet."

I was confused at this point. I knew almost everyone at the camp, whether it be in a good or bad way.

We made it to the medical tent. He opened the flap and led me to a cot at the back with a familiar girl laying on it.

When she saw me she smiled.

"Hey, little brother."

"Ashley... but- but me and mom... we thought that you- Mom... she... Ashley?" I was so confused. She had been here this entire time?

"I'm sorry I didn't tell you sooner. I was thought you would hate me. But if I'm gonna die I may as well tell you I'm alive." She chuckled.

"Why did you do it?"

"Mom was struggling to support two kids. Dad left, taking his money with him. I needed to get out of there. I'm so sorry Alex."

"Mom is dead." I deadpanned.

"I know. George told me all about your life story."

"I'm sorry." I cried.

"For what?"

"I stopped looking. I left home and assumed you were dead. I'm so sorry."

"Don't you dare apologize. This is my fault. I should have never left."

"I missed you so much."

"I missed you too little bro."
