--biana vacker--

It has been THIRTY MINUTES and my hair is still caked with dandruff.

I sigh and stare at myself in the mirror, hands leaning on the sink. My eyebrows are fine, and my teeth are straight enough, but my hair looks like a sandstorm.

A light knock interrupts me from my thoughts. "Come in," I mutter, and my brother steps inside.

"Hair problems?" he asks with a bemused look. HIS hair looks perfectly normal. Slightly tousled, but in that handsome way the girls- and numerous boys- at Foxfire like. I nod begrudgingly and Fitz squints his eyes, examining my curls.

"They look fine to me. But if you need some dandruff remover, you can hop in the shower real quick and we can still get to Rimeshire on time." I groan and he drops his carefree expression.

"Biana," he says sternly. "Tam is not going to give a crap about your hair. Stop worrying."

Tam will, says a voice inside my head. Oh, he definitely will.

Look, I know it's stupid to base your entire self worth on whether a boy likes how you look or not. But if it's so wrong, why is it so easy?

I can picture Marella's voice inside my head. "Because of the goddamn patriarchy that elves have been living in for a hell of a time because whoever said the Lost Cities weren't sexist was definitely a man who had no idea what oppression even felt like."

Alright, but Tam isn't an oppression misogynist. Right?

I hope not. That would be the stupidest crush I've ever had if he was. And I've had a crush on Keefe Sencen, so that's saying something. Oh, and then Dex, for a week or two. Neither of those went anywhere. (Keefe was into Sophie, and Dex didn't seem into me, so I sucked it up and got over that one.)

I snap back to the present and groan for a second time and his expression changes again, this time slightly more desperate. "Stop worrying," he repeats. "Please?"

"Alright, give me the dandruff remover and I'll fix it as much as possible," I grumble, then realize how grumpy I sound. I flash Fitz a grateful smile that he doesn't seem to completely buy, but he'll live with. "Thanks."

He smiles back for a moment, and then fiddles with his bangs for a moment. "How do I look?"

I smirk. "Like the Golden Boy."

He flashes a shining smile and winks. "Good. Now, fix your hair before we end up the late ones. Dex never hosts sleepovers, we'd be idiots to miss this one."

Fitz disappears out the door and I smile at myself in the mirror, replaying what Fitz said in my head.

We'd be idiots to miss this one.

I have a feeling this sleepover will be the most fun yet.
