Chapter 1 - Courage
"Daydream is her name", She said and the atmosphere in the room changed.
"Why would you call her that?" One asked.
"Why is not a good question to ask".
Daydream's little fingers played with the pink floral buttons on her mum's shirt, unaware of what was happening around her.
How can you dream during the day? A thought popped up in five year old Daydream's head. She thought it was strange. On TV, in one of the shows she had been watching, she had noticed that there was always someone looking out the window in wonder. In nearly every scene. The was a 'lifey' kind of show. It was almost as if they wanted to disappear.
"Mum, do you have any dreams?" Daydream asked that evening. Her mum was sitting at the dining table, reading astronomy magazines.
"You are my dream, dal", she replied, smiling happily. Daydream still wasn't sure.
Green grass with fresh dew surrounded by a vast array of rainbow colourful flowers. She walked on this path of pure serenity. Yellow daffodils swaying in the wind and parrots chirping their singsong were welcoming.
Then she woke up.
Her room was dark, it was early morning.
"Morning dal, open the curtains and let the light in", Daydream's mum suggested from the kitchen, Daydream could hear pots and pans cluttering.
"Eggs on toast or eggs and bacon?" Her mum asked as Daydream settled herself on the couch, it was Sunday after all.
"Toast with eggs and bacon please mum", Daydream replied. The wonderful smell of Sunday breakfast wafted around the house.
Daydream hardly ever went outside, that is, out with other people and beyond their house. She asked her mum about this.
"Hey mum, how come we don't go out much?" She asked one evening while they were eating dinner. Her mum's face was full of homemade chicken noodles. She chewed and swallowed.
"There are too many negative things in the world" was all she said. Again, Daydream wasn't sure about her Mum's answer.
A few years later, Daydream made a decision. She was older now to think better. She was going to leave the house and explore this unknown 'world' that her mum seemed to dislike so much. She felt something in her that she hadn't felt before. Her heart fluttered with excitement at the thought of exploring what was out there. Their front door was there to be opened. She walked up to it and opened it. Out of second thought, Daydream left a note on the kitchen bench so that her mum knew. Her mum was out, probably working or whatever adults do. She walked back to the door and saw a path leading somewhere. Daydream didn't know where it led. She took a step, nothing happened. Took another and she noticed a red rose bush out of the corner of her eye. Daydream then started walking on this path and found herself at the end it. There were two ways she could go - left or right. She chose left to see where that would take her.
Diamondia was gardening in front of her small little house. Flowers were beautiful and that made her happy. She placed a bulb in it's polka dot pot and smiled. It was going to grow into a beautiful, flourishing rose bush. She got up and packed up her gardening tools, then noticed a girl walking down the street, looking a little lost. Well, more than a little lost. Her face looked as though it had never been out in sunlight. Diamondia knew that she shouldn't talk to strangers, but she felt a responsibility within her. People could be deceiving, there were people who played bad pranks on other people. But this girl obviously needed help. Diamondia hesitantly watched as the girl tripped over a bump in the poorly laid path. She had to do something and Diamondia chose to. She gently put down her tools and walked over to this girl.
"Are you okay?" Diamondia asked.
"Don't hurt me!" The girl a hand above her head, as if to protect herself. She was still on the ground.
"I'm not going to hurt you...?" The girl whipped up and ran away out of sight, to who knows where. This made Diamondia feel little suspicious and she decided to leave this odd occurrence to sort itself out.
That night Daydream dreamt a different dream. It was almost as if she was in the dream itself. She was sitting on grass in a meadow. She could see spouts of feathery grass in the distance. Movement caught her attention in the trees. Her body tensed and a bird flew out of them. Phew, that scared her.
"Hey! Daydream!" Is that the lady she saw yesterday?
"Wake up!" Her Mum had opened the curtains for her this time.
"I saw your note". She was sad. "Be careful okay Daydream? I don't want anything to happen to you." Daydream didn't know what her mum meant by 'anything', but she felt that she shouldn't ask.
"Okay", Daydream had to keep this promise to her mum, even if she didn't understand.
