Chapter Fourteen

Sparkface was silently wandering around the house, ginger tail held up confidently in the air. Her gleaming gaze looked around, searching for new things. She had been living at the house for a while now, and she felt like she had the reign of the place.

Sparkface then noticed a wooden table, and she perked her ears in interested. She bounded sharply over to the desk, and tried to jump, but she missed the velocity of the jump, and she fell with a thud. She huffed, chest rising in annoyance. "Fox-dung." She cursed under her breath, hoping no one saw her humiliating fail.

The she-cat then got up, scanning the table over. She lowered her haunches, kneading her paws anxiously. She sparing off on her back legs, jumping right onto the table. She purred in satisfaction, and walked around. She sat down on her vantage point, looking for something to do. Her tail swayed back and forth, but then she felt something heavy brush up against her striped tail, and it fell right off the desk.

Sparkface let out a petrified squeak, but then peered over the edge in curiosity. On the carpeted ground, was a flashlight. It was bright red, with a black button, and it had a flowing beam of light brightly streaming from the glass that covered it. Sparkface's eyes widened. She had never seen such a thing that made light, not including fire or the sun, or any other natural light source.

Sparkface noticed a small, wiry tendril was looped around the end of the flashlight, and she instantly started to paw at it.

'What's its use?' She thought. Then an idea sparked in her head, and she bent her head down to swiftly pick up the flashlight. She quickly dragged it to the ferret, dropping it down for him to see.

"What is this?" She questioned solemnly.

The ferret's beady, black eyes flared with knowingness. "Twolegs use. Make light."

Sparkface's tail twitched with intellectual thought. "Oh, thank you for helping me." She dipped her narrow head to the ferret. Then, Sparkface picked up the flashlight in her mouth, and then she stopped suddenly, looking back at the ferret, who was already making his way over to a heaping mass of blankets.

"I'm going to call it a Tinylight. Since it is smaller than all the other lights I've seen." She told him, chest swelling with authority.

The ferret chuckled, clearly amused. "Very well." He dismissed, as he curled up on a blanket. "No disturb."

Sparkface sighed, and padded off to her cage. Then she realized, on her long walk back, that this could help the clans! On dark or cloudy nights, this would surely help the clan find their way. She let out a small mew of excitement. She was almost ready to run around the whole house, but she didn't, in fear she might wake the ferret up.

She then felt drowsy, worn out from her new discovery. She warily crawled to her cage, safely tucked the Tinylight under her blanket, and curled up. She slowly drifted off into a beautiful, serene dream.

"Sparkface! Sparkface!" Voices echoed around her, excited and pleased chanting booming with praise.

A clan cat, who she faintly remembered, who was named Icedash, rubbed up against her in pleasure. "You're the best cat in the clan, Sparkface!"

Sparkface beamed with happiness, smiling from ear to ear. She finally felt appreciated in the clan.

The Clan leader walked up to her, eyes approving. "Good job, Sparkface. I would make you deputy if I could." He chuckled.

Sparkface just nodded, accepting the joyful praises. That Tinylight has done so much for her, she couldn't believe it. "This is perfect..." She murmured.

The dream slowly ebbed away into darkness. She felt calm, and at ease, for once in her life. It will be perfect, just as in her dream. Sparkface's limber body stretched out, claws flexing. She would wake up soon, but she just wanted to sleep, and savor the delights of her success.
