someone who fakes a smile, when all they want to do is cry and/or disappear
people said vanessa wasn't always like that. heartless, cruel, a bitch. people said she used to be nice, read instead of cheer, study instead of shop.
andrea sanderson couldn't remember that time. ever since she'd arrived at fallen oaks high, vanessa had been dominating, ruling. vanessa had been there, the centre of attention, hated and loved by everyone.
now, andie prided herself on being a pretty inclusive person-especially since she fought for female rights, and would continue doing so-but she never liked cheerleaders. these girls, cheerleaders, were the ones who did a sport just to cheer for some stupid guy. and frankly, she couldn't stand that.
maybe that was one of the reasons she couldn't stand vanessa brown. one of the reasons she's hated nessa since she'd stepped into the high school.
although one thing andrea couldn't deny was that vanessa was pretty. gorgeous. she had a stunning figure, luscious dark hair, beautiful tan skin. she was the epitome of perfection, looks wise.
andie, on the other hand, was vanessa's complete opposite. her skin was ghostly pale, meaning that she got sunburnt easily-not very convenient when it came to sports. shimmering green eyes were the only feature that made her stand out from every other student at the school.
well her eyes and the fact that she was the only girl, till date, on the football team.
andrea's thoughts were on the latter, as she manoeuvred her way through the winding corridors, her eyes darting around. the football team meant a lot to getting females more involved, for the 'movement' she was taking part in, if she could call it that. the feminism club wasn't very big-especially since the majority of students at fallen oaks were busy ogling up to vanessa and her side hoes.
okay, so they were her 'squad', madison and olivia. but that wasn't the point.
a small sigh escaped andie's lips, as she pushed open the door for her next class. social studies, one of the four classes she had with the one girl she couldn't stand.
vanessa brown was already sat in her seat, as the athlete entered, not sparing the door a glance. she was surrounded by a group of plastic girls, perfect, angelic faces. the pain below was hidden and the pain below would be hidden as long as they were near vanessa.
nessa ran her fingers through her dark hair, eyes briefly leaving the girls vying for her attention to scan across the room. her expression remained unbothered, although andrea could tell she loved the attention. and loved being front and center.
oh, how wrong she was.
andrea opened her mouth to say something, as vanessa's eyes landed on her, but before she could say anything, vanessa had moved on. usually, that wouldn't have stopped the girl, but this time, there was something different about her piercing gaze.
her eyes seemed colder than usual, emptier of emotions, more than the day before. hate usually seeped across her features, when vanessa saw andrea, but this time, there was nothing of the sort.
honestly, just like andie had hated the cheerleader almost instantly, vanessa had felt the same. that feeling had always been mutual and everyone knew the hatred that they had for one another.
nobody knew why.
neither did they, really. they'd just taken a disliking for one another. stereotypes, the fact that they were opposites.
-----
halfway through the suffocating class, a fight broke out.
per usual, barely anyone was paying attention to the plump, spanish man, who stood tirelessly in front of the group of groaning children.
"that's it," he finally said, after almost thirty minutes of the teenagers payed him no heed, their eyes glued on their phones. "give me your phones."
heads raised almost instantly, protests filling the stuffy classroom. fingers stopped tapping on screens, whether texting or playing candy crush, trying to beat level sixty eight.
"now you listen to me," he said, a frustrated expression filling his face.
"well of course," a jock said, "you're telling us that you're taking a way our phones. our phones."
vanessa nearly slapped him. could a guy get more stupid? she didn't think so.
rolling her eyes, dropped her phone onto the table. "we're teenagers. we need our phones. it helps us communicate, and do our work even."
the teacher payed no attention to her words, nor the ones of others, maneuvering the isles and dropping phones into a little box. when he came to vanessa's desk, she gave him a smile.
"please sir," she said, "my phone is the only thing that gets me through the day."
"well now your ears will," he said calmly, placing the box on her desk, and waiting for her to hand over her phone. like everyone else.
but vanessa wasn't everyone else.
her eyes raised, meeting his. "please. i can't do this without it."
that's when andie snapped. maybe it was because she was wasting lesson time or maybe just because nessa was infuriating, but andrea jumped up, knocking her own phone off the table in the process.
"you can't do without it! there's hundreds of people who don't have phones, who do without food, without water, without money. so quit making a fuss about your phone. because you don't know what bad conditions are. you don't know what it means to do without something. and you can very much do without that crappy little device."
maybe it was then when something in vanessa snapped as well. a crack in her perfect demeanor, before regaining her balance.
"darling, don't judge me. you have no idea what i've been through. no idea what it's taken to get me so far. i very well know what it means to do without something that isn't a phone. believe it or not, my life isn't perfect either."
i might write some more
