1. The Infinities of Thought
We have met the multiverse, and it is us.
When we are told that the universe is infinite, we tend to think that means it must be all that is.
Then we are told there may be a multiverse, indeed there must be an infinite number of universes, because that's the only way to explain how our universe can be special enough to have us in it. We tend to think, "Yeah, right. Dream on."
But then we are told that dreams can't be explained. That all the efforts of science to explain how conscious thought and dreams arise in the brain comes to a dead end. When asked to explain how light from the natural world that enters our eyes and stimulates nerve cells, sending signals to the brain, can make us see a red rose, scientists have no answer. Let alone how printed words like these can become ideas in our minds, how the sounds of voices can do the same.
We are told that our hopes and dreams are products of our brains. That our entire world exists only inside our head. And that the same is true for everyone we know.
How can this be? How can our entire world be inside our head? Impossible, right?
But what if instead of inside our head we say inside our mind? And then we say that our mind is not inside our head? Let's say instead that our head is inside our mind.
That actually starts to make more sense. A mind can be filled with ideas. In fact if we say that every idea we have ever had, every sight we have ever seen, every feeling, everything that we can possibly remember, has to be inside our mind, then maybe it makes a lot of sense.
In fact, maybe we have to say that for any individual anywhere, everything they know, everything they have ever known, everything they can ever know, has to be inside their mind.
Looking at it this way, we can say that our whole world, our whole universe, our whole life must be inside our mind. And life is but a dream. But it is our dream. And everything we know of the world, everything we can know of it, is part of that dream.
And that has to include every person we know. Whatever we know of that person is part of our dream. And everything each person we know knows of us is part of their dream. And not only people. Every cat, every dog you ever saw is part of your dream. And if all those cats and dogs saw you, then you are part of their dreams.
In fact every bird that ever flew away when you got too close to it knows something of you, has something of you in its dream. And every fly you waved away. Every tree you ever touched, every flower. Even every flower you ever saw, because seeing is a kind of touching. Every cell, every atom, knows this kind of touching. And retains the experience.
All these things become part of your dream, part of your universe. And you become part of theirs. Taken all together, all these dreams add up to the entire world out there. Life is but a dream. The world is but a dream. A shared dream.
We have met the multiverse, and it is us.
Does this almost make sense?
Perhaps the only thing missing is, how are all these dreams shared? What is the means, the medium of this ultimate sharing?
Consider this:
If individual universes are dream realities, then shared ideas are agreed upon realities. Both influence future realities. They are shared dreams.
It must be obvious that no two universes are exactly alike. Similarities between universes are assumed, not actual. The actual is internal to a universe. For any universe, the future holds the possible, the present holds the actual, and the past holds memory.
Gravity is memory. It appears to be weak in the present because it holds the shape of spacetime in every mind. All other apparent forces act only in the present, and only locally.
Of all those other forces, the one most prevalent for us is light. So the answer to that ultimate question about how our universes are shared is, light. But not just the light we see. It is also the light we feel as heat. And the light we feel as touch.
Yes touch. We don't often think of it this way, but science has shown us that touch too is transmitted by light, as electromagnetic energy exchanged at the atomic level.
In this sense, it can be truly said that light is the medium by which we share in what we can know of the world of dreams, and what all levels of that world, from miles to microns, can know of us.
What, then, is light, that it can enable this sharing between dreamers?
It has also been truly said that you are the light.
Let it shine.
