Chapter Two: The Hard Life

TWO MONTHS LATER...

Listen up everyone. Today we are going to do live training simulations. You will be given assault rifles and a handgun. Don't worry, you won't kill someone, the bullets are training bullets' The instructor says.

I look at the rifle and check it to make sure its good to go.

'You will be dropped off at a random point in the forest. This will be a death match between all of you trainees, your job is to eliminate as many teams as possible while making sure each of your team survives' The instructor continues.

We all yell 'Yes sir!' and jog to the drop ship.

Once onboard my team and I choose a seat and wait for liftoff.

'So what's the plan sir?' Tabby asks.

Ever since the obstacle course, I've been selected as team leader. The instructors didn't disagree so they promoted me and left me as the team leader.

'Our first objective is to find shelter, Somewhere we could always retreat to that is defendable'  say as the ship takes off into the air.

They all nod their heads.

'And after that?' Jake asks.

'After that, we will locate and secure food and water supplies. We don't know how long we are going to be down there so we need to prepare just in case. Then the fun begins' I say with a smile plastered on my face.

Everyone laughs. 'ETA Two minutes until we reach your drop point' The pilot says over the comms.

My team and I are ready to go when the ship descends into the forest green.

Our boots hit the ground and we take off, heading towards a river we saw on the way down.

Not even five minutes go by when we here the sound of a weapon discharging.

My team and I crawl towards the sounds. As we get closer we see two teams having a nice shoot out.

'Hold your fire guys. Let's wait a bit and see what happens. Jake, whatch our backs' I order.

Jake nods and turns around covering our backs. I turn back to the fighting to see that one team is down to two people.

I start thinking about helping them out. Then I think better of it. Only one team can be the winner.

Just as the team gets wiped out, the other team rushes in to take their weapons.

I order my team to fan out in attack position, effectively surrounding the other team.

I give the open fire signal and my team opens up, training bullets hitting out targets without missing once.

The bullets don't kill anyone, it just freezes a person once it hits the armor. Headshot and two shots to the chest paralyze the entire body, while shots to the limbs paralyze the limb only.

As my team moves in to take their guns and munition, some of the fallen team members start complaining.

'You guys were hiding there the entire time?' One asks.

I nod my head grinning.

'Why didn't you help us? We could have been allies' He continues.

'Because, only one team could win. If the instructors said there would be more than one winner I would have helped out' I say taking his assault rifle.

Tabby runs up to me excited. 'Look what I found on that cheater over there!' She says smiling.

I look and see she has a sniper rifle in her hands. That's just ironic, I thought. Tabby is easily the best sniper out of every cadet in the school. Her skills with a sniper rifle are deadly.

'Nice!' I say excited.

We take all of the ammo from both teams and continue to the river. Once there, we fill up our canteens and keep moving. After walking for a good hour, my team and I find a cave of some kind.

We instantly make it our home base and drop off all our ammo into a pile.

We take out an MRE, our food we were given, and start to chow down.

About halfway through our meal, an announcement comes up through the forest through speakers.

'For the sake of our entertainment, we have chosen to have two winning teams. That means that each team can team up against other teams. Only Two groups per team' The instructor yells through the microphone.

'Oh now they tell us that!' I said rather loudly.

'For real, we already eliminated our ally' Mary says.

'Wish they would have said that sooner' Jake adds.

'Well look at the bright side of things. We took down two teams. That means there are 17 teams left with us included' I say.

'So' Tabby says.

I roll my eyes. 'So, we could always get another ally and still win. We just need to find a friendly team' I say confidently.

'Yeah, you're right, where do we start looking?' Mary asks.

'We might find a team by the river' Tabby says.

'That's definitely a good start' I nod my head in agreement.

After we finish eating we hide most of our ammo and weapons, taking those we need.

Then we head off towards the river in a slow paste.

Its already nightfall when we get to the river, the only sounds are those of the wildlife and the water flowing.

We crouch and wait to see if anybody comes through.

After twenty minutes of waiting we are about to continue when we heard gunshots in the distance somewhere close by.

'You hear that' Mary whispers.

I nod my head.

We go towards the sound and find that two teams are teaming up against another.

I find their leader. His name is Travis. He leads the Howlers Team.

I look past them and identify the other two teams as Nighthawks and Wolverines.

'Tabby, climb that tree over there silently and take out as many targets as possible' I order.

Tabby nods, moving to the tree.

Jake I need you to move to the right and flank the enemy team. Make them think that there's more of you there' I say.

Jake nods.

'Mary, your going to where Travis is and inform him we are here to help' I order.

Mary nods, 'Yes sir'

'OK, go go go' I whisper, scrambling to my feet and going through the left to flank the second team.

I run through the woods silently, hearing the sounds of battle around me.

I dive to cover and holster my silenced rifle.

In front of me are the Wolverines. I take aim and shoot down two of the team members, quickly getting to cover as the remainder open fire at me.

I crawl out of there and get behind a tree for cover, aim my rifle.

I go back into cover since I don't have a clear shot.

I crawl to my right and get behind a bush.

The Wolverines are slowly advancing on the bush I was on.

I aim and shoot one in the head, paralyzing him.

The other turns to shoot at me, only to drop when a sniper round sends him flying in the air.

Nice shot Tabby. I think to myself smiling.

I don't hear anymore fighting so I'm guessing the Nighthawks have been taken down as well.

I get up and slowly walk towards the Howlers.

When I get there I find them aiming their weapons at me.

'Weapons down, its Nicolas' Travis orders when he sees me.

I nod at him.

'Mary here says you want to be allied?' He asks hopeful.

'Yeah, We came looking for an ally when we heard those idiots discharging their weapons without silencers' I reply grinning.

'Yeah, they almost took us by surprise if we hadn't heard one step on a branch' Travis says.

I walk up to him and shake his hand. 'I'm Nicolas, leader of the Silent wolves, as you already know' I say almost laughing.

Travis shakes my hand, not containing his own laughter. 'Travis, leader of the Howlers' He replies.

'Nice to meet you. You got a place to bunker down in? If not you can come with us to Silent Wolf Alpha Base' I said.

'No we don't. Lead the way' Travis says holstering his rifle.

My team returns and we head off back to base.

Me and Travis immediately become friends.
