Sonny Thompson grew up loving movies.

She used to sit on the couch in her best friend, Eli Moskowitz's, basement and couldn't wait to go to high school, go to parties, and have a whole bunch of friends.

Sonny didn't expect that she would hate the idea of high school before she even hit third grade.

One April night when Sonny Thompson was six years old, her father, Ross Thompson died in a car accident because of a drunk teen driving home on prom night.

After hearing the news about her husbands death, Julie Thompson was absolutely heartbroken to say the least but still made sure she was there for her six and twelve year old daughters. The three had learned how to live without Ross around the house.

Julie started to focus her entire life on her daughters. She gave them 200% of everything she did, wanting to make up for their father no longer being with them.

She was so focused on her daughters, she hardly recognized her own health and how much it was depleting. It took seven years for her to finally take herself to the doctor and realize she had breast cancer. After five months of any and every treatments and medication they could afford, Julie Thompson passed away leaving her daughters alone in the world.

Jess was nineteen years old when her mother died, making her legally Sonny's guardian. Jess wasn't planning on going to college, she wanted to travel and explore, but now, she was taking care of her thirteen year old little sister. Even though she had the money both of her parents had when they died, she had to jump from job to job to keep themselves comfortable in Encino.

The hardest part for Jess, surprisingly, was keeping Sonny okay. After losing both of her parents, Sonny didn't speak. At all. Luckily, she didn't have any presentations to do and all her teachers were understanding for the most part.

At first, Sonny's friends had trouble with it, or at least Demetri did because now he was stuck with two friends who hardly spoke. Eli was able to work with it quickly, only taking about two weeks of struggling before he started to understand what Sonny was saying without her even having to do sign language, which her sister, Demetri and Eli all learned for her.

It took five months for Sonny to talk again and now, Sonny was starting high school! The one thing she used to dream of, Sonny dreaded.

She made a vow to herself to never drink alcohol until she was of age, not wanting to end up like the boy behind the wheel the night her dad died.

It turned out, Sonny didn't really need to make that vow because she, Demetri, and Eli never got invited to any parties... or made friends outside of the three of them. They were invisible.

Sonny didn't mind that though. It let her be able to watch the girl she's silently had a crush on for the past three years.

But now, sophomore year was starting and with a new kid in their friend group trying to get them to join karate, Sonny starts to actually be seen.
