Sonny Thompson was never one to be outspoken or loud. She'd much rather watch and listen rather than be the one people would see or hear which is exactly why she sat in the very back of her Math class, where she wouldn't disturb anyone and no one would her. She had her knees up on the seat, pulled up to her chest as she leaned over them, fancying up her notes they had taken earlier in the period.
As she kept her eyes on her notebook, she felt a presence in front of her desk, making her shyly look up and immediately grow tense at the popular girl in front of her. Moon looked down at Sonny, giving her a big smile as she had her arms tightly around her notebook.
"Hi." Sonny slowly let out, looking at the girl in awestruck. Moon smile grew bigger at the awkward girl. "Hi! I was a little confused with what we're supposed to do and I saw that you've been looking down at your book for the passed 5 minutes so I figured you'd know what we're doing." Moon said, taking the empty seat beside Sonny as the quiet girls eyes just followed the girl.
Sonny heard what Moon said but she didn't answer. She couldn't. Her mind was stuck on the last portion of Moons words. Moon had been watching her. Moon saw her.
Sonny quickly shook her head to get out of her thoughts and cleared her throat. "Um... You have to graph the equations. -3+4i would be at (-3, 4). The real number is the x-axis and the imaginary is the y." Sonny said, leaning over a little closer to Moon and pointing at her notebook.
Moon nodded, starting to understand it and turned her head to face Sonny. Their faces were practically inches apart and Sonny stared into Moons eyes that were watching her brown ones softly. "And uh... that's how you do it." Sonny said, an awkward chuckle at the end of her sentence as she moved closer to her side of the desk and Moon watched Sonny with a smile on her face, nodding. "Yeah. That makes sense. Thanks. I'm Moon by the way." Moon said with a smile.
"I know." Sonny blurted before shaking her head, letting out an airy laugh that Moon let out as well. "I mean... Sonny. I'm Sonny." She quickly tried to save herself but failed completely. "Look at that. Sonny and Moon." Moon sang out, making Sonnys cheeks redden, nodding her head rapidly. The bell for lunch rang through the air and Sonny eyes fell on the red bell, sighing as Moon packed up her stuff. "It was nice meeting you, Sonny."
Sonny smiled, giving Moon a small wave goodbye. As soon as the girl was far enough away, Sonnys eyes went wide, her head falling into her crossed arms on the table as her mind replayed the embarrassing scene in her head until she felt a tap on her shoulder.
Sonny didn't look up, already knowing it was Eli picking her up to head to lunch. Something they've done since ninth grade because their classes always seemed to be next to each other. Eli bounced back and forth on the balls of his feet shyly as he watched his friend. He quickly poked her head to see if she was alive and when she groaned as a response, he sighed.
"Sonny... We have to go." Eli mumbled, holding onto his backpack strap tighter as he looked around the room. "Sonny, come on. All the fish sticks are gonna be gone." He quietly whined. Sonny peaked her head out of her arms and when she locked eyes with Eli, he gave her a small tight lipped smile.
Sonny sighed. "Is it really fish sticks day?" Eli nodded and Sonny sighed again, sitting up and packing her stuff up, making Eli get a proud feeling for getting Sonny up. Once she was done packing, she linked arms with Eli and skipped out of the room, dragging the poor boy with her.
...
"Oh, thank god you're here. I thought you two left me for the library again." Demetri sighed in relief when he saw Sonny and Eli leave the lunch line and join him at the table, Sonny sitting in between the two boys. "Never." Sonny in a sarcastic tone that made Demetri roll his eyes before he put his chocolate milk on her lunch tray and she quickly handed him her apple slices.
She heard someone clear their throat from the side of the table and turned her head, meeting eyes with a boy she had never seen before. Sonny sent him a small smile that he instantly returned.
"Is it cool if I sit here?" He quietly asked and Demetri instantly let out a playful wince. "Sorry. Tables really blowing up right now. I can put you on the waitlist, but it's probably next semester at the earliest." The boy shook his head starting to walk away. "Okay." He mumbled and Sonny rolled her eyes, sticking her up to stop him. "He's kidding. Sit."
The boy sat down on the other side of Eli. "Miguel." He quickly introduced and Demetri nodded his head. "Demetri. This is Sonny and that's Eli." Sonny gave Miguel a smile as Eli just looked at him. "He's a man of few words." Demetri mumbled as Sonny gave Eli one of her fish sticks, making him slowly smile to her.
Sam and Yasmine walked passed their table, Sonny and Demetri quickly noticing Miguel's longing stares to the girls, Demetri sighed. "Dude, don't torture yourself. Those are the rich girls. Sonnys a rich girl too but Yasmine didn't want her in their little group because she's a nerd." Sonny quickly elbowed him at the comment, making him wince as Miguel spoke. "Do you ever talk to them or-"
"Oh, Yeah! All the time. We hang out after school, give each other hand jobs. Eli here's the homecoming king. Gets laid more then anyone besides Sonny, of course since she goes for both males and females." Demetri sarcastically spoke, earning another jab from Sonny. "Will you stop hitting me?!" Demetri cried out, rubbing his shoulder as Eli held back a smile watching the two bicker.
"Talk to them? You realize what table you're sitting at right? You've pretty much signed away all hopes of losing your virginity before college." Demetri told Miguel and Sonny hung her head low, taking a sip of her chocolate milk when Eli gasps. "Oh shit, Yasmines looking at us. Probably just making fun of me."
"I don't think she's making fun of you. I mean... just because they're hot, doesn't mean they're mean." Miguel said and Sonny let out a dry laugh. "Clearly you haven't met Yasmine. Moon and Sam are nice but Yasmine's a bitch." Sonny scoffed out and Eli looked at Sonny with a small smirk. "You're just saying that cause you like Moon."
Miguel quickly leaned over Eli to get closer to Sonny. "Which ones Moon?" Sonny scooted closer to Eli and Miguel, using her fish stick to subtly point out the girls. "Moons the one in red. Yasmine is the blonde next to her and Sam's at the end of the table." Sonny explained and Miguel nodded his head, and looked at Sonny with furrowed brows as he picked at his food. "So you like Moon?"
Sonny nodded, biting into her fish stick. "Sonny has had a crush on Moon since the seventh grade when she accidentally bumped into her." Demetri explained, taking an apple slice off his tray as Eli turned to him, slightly shaking his head. "No, she hasn't." Eli quietly mumbled and Sonny nodded, pointing at the quiet boy beside her. "Eli's right. I've liked her since the sixth grade, not seventh."
"So you're..." "Bisexual." Sonny answered Miguel's question, turning to face him as she took another sip of milk. Miguel nodded, turning back to the three popular girls. "And you're rich like them?" Sonny shrugged. "I guess you could say that. My sister and I live a few houses away from Sam. Like Demetri said, I was supposed to be in their little rich girl clique but Yasmine didn't want a nerd in her group soo before any of the other girls could have a say, I was cut from it. But it's all good. Even if she if she did let me in, I'd never leave these two dweebs." Sonny said with a wide grin, wrapping an arm around Eli and Demetri. Eli leaned into her, accepting the side hug while Demetri didn't acknowledge it, staring off at Yasmine.
"I don't care of Yasmine is the meanest girl in school. I'd kill all three of you just to get her to spit in my face." Demetri sighed and Sonny let out a grossed out whine, slumping down in her seat a little bit. "If you don't make a move, you'll never have a shot." Miguel tried to tell Demetri before turning to Sonny. "You too."
Sonny snorted, bringing a hand up to her face to cover her laugh. "That's funny." Demetri turned to Miguel. "True, but I'll also never suffer a humiliating rejection. I'm at peace with my depression. Last thing I need to be is suicidal."
Out of no where, Miguel pushes his lunch treat towards the center of the table and stands up. Sonny tenses, watching him. "What the hell are you doing?" She quietly asked and Miguel smiled as he watched Sam LaRusso. "Striking first." He answered, not taking his eyes off Sam. Sonny immediately starts shaking her head no. "I can't watch." She quickly spins around to Eli, placing her forehead on his shoulder as Eli and Demetri watch Miguel walk towards the rich kids table and just before he can introduce himself, Kyler and his friends sit down.
As Miguel walks back to the table Eli starts rapidly hitting Sonnys shoulder. "Is it over?" She felt Eli nod. "Yeah but that's not why I was tapping you." Sonny looked at him with furrowed brows before realizing he was looking at something just passed her. Sonny turned her head to see what he was looking at and instantly locked eyes with Moon who was staring right at her, a big smile on her face as she sent Sonny a wave. Sonny froze, staring at the girl and Demetri elbowed her. "Well... Don't be stupid. Wave back!" He whisper yelled and Sonny instantly obliged, waving enthusiastically to the girl, making Moon smile more before going back to her conversation with her table.
When Sonny looked back at her group, Demetri, Eli and Miguel stared at her, making her sink in her chair. "What?" She innocently asked. "Moon just waved to you." Demetri said as if it wasn't obvious and Sonny slowly nodded her head. "Yeah..."
"And you didn't have a heart attack." Demetri said and Sonny nodded again. "Yeah, I kinda already had my heart attack when she talked to me in math class." Sonny mumbled but the three boys heard her. Demetri's jaw practically dropped as he stared at her. "What?!"
