Word got out that Miyagi-Fang was going to fight Cobra Kai for a spot in the Sekai Takai and it didn't take long for Eli, Demetri, Miguel, and Robby to all stampede into Sonny's home to watch as the previous tournaments to see what they were getting themselves into.
After watching last year's Sekai Takai, Sonny drove everyone to Miyagi-Do. During the drive and even the walk to the backyard, the boys couldn't stop talking about the competition.
"Who knew people could kick that high?" Robby said, referring to a girl in the previous year's competition who kicked so high Demetri could've bet money her knee touched her chin. Eli laughed at Robby's words, elbowing him in agreement. "Or that hard," he added as the five of them walked into the backyard. "That's why it's the biggest competition in the world."
He noticed Sonny walking a couple of steps ahead of them, drowned out of the conversation, and he quickly sped up to stand beside her, wrapping a lazy arm around her shoulders. "Sonny, you're a cheerleader. Do you think you could kick that high by the time we're in the Sekai Takai?"
Sonny could've thrown her head back at how hard she wanted to laugh. She was flexible but she would not be able to do what the other girl did. Before she could answer, Demetri sped his steps up to be on the other side of her. "Yeah, it can't be as bad as the splits. You can do that, right?" Demetri asked just as Robby ran up behind Sonny, placed his hands on either of her shoulders and jumped while Sonny was mid-step, hoping that with some miracle she'd fall into the splits.
Sonny stumbled, one arm out ready to catch her fall while the other tried to push Robby off of her as she laughed.
Sam ran up to Sonny and grabbed her forearms to help stop her from falling as Johnny, Daniel, and Chozen walked into the backyard. Daniel laughed at the sight in front of him and shook his head. "All right, all right. Let's not get ahead of ourselves." He said, making all eyes turn to him and the two other senseis.
"Remember, Cobra Kai is gonna do everything they can to get a spot. And if they win this time, kids all over the world are gonna have to deal with the same crap you guys have gone through."
"But if we win, we can show the world how to stop them." Johnny said and Chozen nodded in agreement on the other side of him. "First you must prove you can compete with best."
"To do that, you have to be better than the best which is why we're gonna kick your asses into high gear." Johnny said, and Sonny's shoulders slumped tiredly. If all three senseis were working with them, she knew she was going to be insanely drained.
Daniel smiled at his students faces, even though some of them didn't look too excited after Johnnys words. "Sensei Lawrence, Sensei Toguchi and I are gonna get you ready for the presentation. Come on. Let's get warmed up."
...
After using the rest of the week to prepare for the Sekai Takai judges, Miyagi-Fang was informed that to earn a spot in the competition, they would have to fight against Cobra Kai in both a female match and a male match. Considering there were only two girls in Miyagi-Fang, Johnny and Chozen insisted Sonny be the one to fight in the girls' match, as she was the runner-up for the All Valley. After some convincing, Daniel, who initially insisted Sam be the one to fight, was finally swayed.
Now, Sonny, Daniel, and Chozen worked until nightfall at Miyagi-Do, training Sonny until the two men were sure she was ready.
It got to the point where it was dark out, the honey-golden lights surrounding Miyagi-Do's backyard being Sonny's only way of seeing Daniel and Chozen's faces.
Her arms ached, and she could feel cold beads of sweat drip down her reddening face. Daniel seemed to notice how tired Sonny was getting and slowly let go of the punching bag in front of him, smiling.
Sonny's movements slowed as Daniel gave her a breathy laugh. "I think that's it for the night. You're sharper than ever. Okay? You got this. Tory won't know what hit her."
Sonny rested her hands on her waist, letting herself catch her breath as she shrugged. "Thanks. But that's not really the problem." She said and Daniel brows furrowed, his mood dampening as he caught onto Sonny's frown.
"What's wrong?" Daniel asked, catching Chozen's attention from across the backyard. The two men stood side by side in front of Sonny, both of them watching her with confused looks.
Sonny struggled to look either of them in the eyes. She looked down to the dirt at her feet and sighed. "I've been so scared ever since I've started karate." Sonny admitted. She didn't see it but Daniel's brows creased, his confused look turning into a sad one.
Sonny pulled her lips into a line and shrugged, dragging the toe of her shoe through the dirt in front of her. "I used to worry about fighting Demetri for the aux and different ways to get Moons attention. Now, I worry that someone is gonna really hurt me or my friends just because of a dojo we're in."
She finally looked up and immediately locked eyes with Daniel. "It showed me fear I didn't even know I had."
Chozen turned to look at Daniel, but the LaRusso's eyes stayed glued on Sonny. He thought back to his high school days and all the fear Cobra Kai kids brought to him. He was just making these kids go through the same cycle.
"After the tournament, when you closed the dojo, I started to think that maybe it was for the best. That I could use a break. And now, being back here and training with everybody has been so great. But this... fear hasn't gone away. I've been panicking a lot more. I mean... I've had three panic attacks just this week." Sonny noticed her words starting to blend together from how fast she was talking, so she took a deep breath.
Her eyes scanned over the dojo as she tried to think of all the good memories she's had in the backyard. She sheepishly shrugged and turned back to Daniel.
"I don't want to let anyone down if I'm not sure if I can face Tory." Sonny's voice was barely audible, too embarrassed to make her words any louder.
Daniel exchanged a look with Chozen, both men understanding Sonny's words. Chozen took a step closer, his voice gentle but firm. "Bravery is not about not being scared. It's facing your fears head-on, despite how you feel."
Daniel nodded, stepping forward as well. "You are not alone in this. We fight together, as a team. Fear is a part of the journey, but it does not define you."
Sonny's eyes filled with unshed tears, but she nodded, feeling a surge of support from the two men in front of her. She took a deep breath, feeling a bit lighter. "Thank you. Both of you."
Daniel placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder and gave her a small smile. "Go on. You're missing the pizza party." He said, nodding his head to where she parked her car out front. Sonny smiled at the man nodding her head and running to the car.
...
"How did you even land this job?" Sonny asked Brandon as he drove her, Demetri, and Eli—who now had a green mohawk—to Cobra Kai's new dojo. Brandon had somehow been chosen to be the on-site medic for this competition and when Sonny was about to drive her two friends to the dojo, Brandon stopped them and offered them a ride.
"I guess since I was the medic for the last two All Valleys, they thought I was a good fit to be a medic for this too." Brandon said with pursed lips, his eyes on the road until the end of his sentence before he turned to Sonny in the passenger seat and shrugged.
"At least you'll be here in case Tory injures Sonny again. She seems to get injured after every competition." Demetri said from the seat behind Sonny.
Sonny whipped around in her seat, giving Demetri a warning glare. "You're not one to talk, noodle arm." Sonny mocked, and instantly, Demetri's jaw dropped in defense. "Hey! Technically, that wasn't my fault!" Demetri yelled, sending a harmless side-eye to Hawk beside him before he turned back to Sonny.
Sonny raised her brows a-matter-of-factly at Demetri. "Me neither!" She taunted back as Brandon pulled into the Cobra Kai dojo.
She watched as Demetri and Eli's eyes moved past her and out the windshield. Their eyes widened at the sight of the huge dojo. Sonny's brows furrowed at her two friends. "What are you two..." Sonny turned around to see what the two boys were looking at, and her eyes widened at the two-story dojo in front of her.
"Holy shit." She muttered under her breath as Brandon parked beside Daniel.
Sonny immediately climbed out of the car, Demetri and Eli hot on her tail. Miguel, Sam, and Robby noticed the three and walked towards them. "It's..." Sam started, staring up at the building. "Insane." Sonny finished her sentence. The two girls turned to each other and sighed.
"Well, good luck, you two." Robby said, coming up behind Sonny and Eli, putting a hand on either of their shoulders. Hawk huffed under his breath, shaking his head. "No pressure there." He muttered as they all started to walk towards the building.
As Robby sped up his steps to walk with Miguel and Demetri, Eli bumped his shoulder into Sonny's side. The girl turned to him and raised her eyebrows at the smile on Hawk's face. "Ready to be fearless?" Hawk asked, holding his hand out to start their handshake.
Sonny's nervous look turned into a smile as she brought her hand to his, completing their handshake. "Fearless."
As they walked in, Sonny's jaw dropped. The inside somehow looked even better than the outside. Just as she was about to comment on the dojo, Sonny noticed the Sekai Taikai sponsors walking towards Johnny, Chozen, and Daniel and quickly elbowed Hawk, trying to get his attention to walk towards them. As all of the students crowded around the senseis and sponsors, the sponsors smiled at Silver. "Thank you, Sensei Silver, for offering to host these matches in your dojo on such short notice."
"Offering or demanding?" Daniel muttered. Silver's head whipped to face Daniel, raising his eyebrows smugly. "We do have actual tournament regulation mats here, so it really was the only option." He chuckled out, making Daniel's jaw clench in anger.
"We'll begin with the boys. We have invited a local referee to ensure impartiality. First to three points wins." The main Sekai Taikai sponsor, Gunther, explained, and the senseis nodded.
Everyone started to walk towards the edges of the mat. "Eli Moskowitz and Kenny Paine, please take the mat." The referee announced. Eli stood a proud step onto the mat as Kenny walked on with him from the other side of the dojo.
Once the two met in the middle, they faced the referee and bowed before facing each other and bowing. The referee looked between the two boys with raised brows. "Ready?" He asked as they got into position.
"Fight!"
Kenny made the first move, jumping towards Eli to kick him in the stomach, but Eli dodged it, moving out of the way. Kenny barely landed his kick before he turned around and started to throw punch after punch at Eli. As Eli spent his time trying to block Kenny from punching him, Kenny raised his foot and kicked him in the stomach.
Sonny's shoulders slumped as Cobra Kai cheered. "Point! 1-0, Paine." The referee yelled as the boys went back into their fighting stance.
"Ready? Fight!"
This time, Eli made all the first moves, running at Kenny with kicks and punches the boy had no time to block. When Eli ended up kicking Kenny, all of Miyagi-Do and Eagle Fang cheered.
"Yes!" Sonny and Demetri screamed at the same time, and Demetri, who was standing right behind Sonny, put his hands on either of her shoulders and did an excited jump. The ref turned to the Miyagi-Fangs and shook his head. "Out of bounds. No point."
Sonny's jaw dropped as Demetri's hands left her shoulders. Her mind started to go back to the night of the All-Valley as her team started to complain.
"What, are you serious?" Eli asked, taking a couple of steps towards the ref from the center of the mat as Johnny scoffed. "Ref, that's horseshit. He made contact in bounds!" He yelled, but the referee shook his head at Johnny and Eli's words. "No point. Back on the line."
Hawk looked to his team, hoping this was some sick joke, but Daniel gave him a reassuring nod that silently told him to keep going. Eli sighed and turned back to Kenny, getting into his fighting position.
"Ready? Fight!"
The two boys went back and forth, sending punches and kicks at each other. Every now and then, one of them would almost hit the other and both teams, but neither would earn a point.
When Hawk went to kick Kenny's side, Kenny grabbed onto his leg and twisted it. In seconds, Kenny rammed his elbow into the back of Eli's knee, and the entire room gasped.
Eli screamed in pain as he fell to the floor. Sonny practically smacked herself from how hard and fast her hand went to her mouth as the referee started to wave his hands around. "Illegal strike. That's a warning."
"Warning? He should be disqualified." Daniel yelled, and Eli shook his head as he walked back towards his team. "It's fine. He just caught me off guard." Eli tried to reassure.
"Are you sure, Eli?" Daniel asked, and Eli smirked to his team. "No more Eli. It's time to uncage the Hawk." He quickly fixed his mohawk to make sure it was still stuck upward and watched as his team in front of him all nodded their heads in encouragement.
Hawk turned around and took slow steps back towards the center of the mat. When he got into his fighting stance, the ref looked back and forth between the two boys.
"Ready?" The referee asked as Sonny started to bounce on her toes in nervousness. "Fight!"
Immediately, Kenny let out a war cry as he raised his hand and punched Hawk in the center of his chest. Hawk gasped for air, his hand slowly going to his chest as he collapsed to the floor.
Sonny felt her heart race in that moment. A loud gasp from Demetri echoed in her ear from beside her as Daniel and Johnny ran up to Hawk.
"Point! Payne." The referee yelled, and even though all of Cobra Kai was cheering, Sonny could hear the senseis checking on Eli.
"Hawk. What's wrong?" Johnny asked, and Hawk continued to hold onto his chest. "I can't... Can't... Can't breathe."
"Where's the medic?" Johnny yelled, and Sonny's head whipped around to the corner of the room where Brandon stood with all of his equipment. She watched as he practically stumbled over his own feet to get onto the mat and down on his knees beside Eli.
"That's a forfeit. Winner, Payne." The referee yelled, and even though she should have been mad about the unfair win, her mind only cared about her best friend and his health.
Brandon, after checking Eli's breathing and other motor skills, looked up to Daniel and Johnny crouched beside him. "He's okay. Just got the wind knocked out of him." Brandon reassured. He looked back down to Eli and gave him a small smile. "You're gonna be okay."
"Looks like you got a new name." Kenny chuckled out, making everyone turn to look at the younger kid. "Faux-Hawk." He said, an evil grin taking over his face.
Sonny's jaw clenched at Kenny's insult. Without her eyes leaving the middle schooler, Sonny leaned closer to Demetri beside her. "Is it frowned upon to beat up an incoming freshman as an incoming senior?"
Demetri shook his head and sighed, and Sonny couldn't tell if it was because of her question or Kenny's comment. "Sadly, it is."
After a couple of seconds of death-glaring Kenny so hard she wished she could shoot lasers out of her eyes, Sonny finally looked away from the younger boy and back to Hawk, who was now being led to the staircase behind the Miyagi-Fangs to catch his breath with Brandon and Johnny.
"We begin our girls' fight. Sonny Thompson and Tory Nichols, please take the mat." The referee yelled. Sonny looked to the mat and took a deep breath. She turned to Demetri beside her, who gave her a small nod. As they did their handshake, Sonny felt different members of her team give her some pats and rubs of encouragement on her back and shoulders.
Once she completed her handshake with Demetri, Sonny stepped onto the mat. She looked across from her and furrowed her eyebrows when she didn't see Tory on the other end or standing with the other Cobra Kai students.
"Where is she?" She could faintly make out Sensei Kim asking the Cobra Kai students.
"Sonny!" Daniel whispered. Sonny turned her head and walked towards Daniel and Chozen, who were waving her over.
Daniel watched Sonny worriedly, shaking his head. "They're fighting dirty. This is dangerous. You don't have to do this." He said and Sonny swallowed the lump in her throat. "I know. But I can handle it. This is for all of us." She reassured the two men. Both Daniel and Chozen straightened up at her words, and Sonny smiled, bowing to her senseis before she turned back towards the referee.
Sonny watched as Silver said a few words to Sensei Kim. Even though Silver didn't look too happy, Kim smiled, her eyes glancing over to Devon. When she turned back to Silver, the man nodded and he walked towards the judges.
Sonny looked behind her to where Eli and Johnny were sitting on the stairs. Eli still looked out of it, taking a sip of water as he tried to catch his breath and Johnny sat beside him, rubbing his back.
"Oh, come on. You've got this." Sonny heard Miguel whisper yell, making Sonny giggle as she turned back around, her eyes falling on Devon walking onto the mat to fight her.
"Face me. Bow." The referee instructed the two girls to bow before facing each other. Sonny smiled at Devon. Since they weren't in the same dojo when Devon was in Eagle Fang, Sonny didn't get the chance to become close with her, but from what Miguel and Johnny had told her, Devon was very sweet.
"Face each other. Bow."
The girls bowed to each other and Sonny could see Devon calm slightly from Sonny smiling at her and she returned the gesture. "Ready?" The referee asked as they got into position. Sonny felt her nervousness start to wash away. She knew she could fight and as sweet as Devon was, she knew she had this fight in the bag.
"Fight!"
Sonny didn't waste a second raising her foot and kicking Devon in the stomach. She lost the All Valley, she wasn't going to let herself lose this.
"Point. 1-0, Thompson."
Sonny had to hold back a smile on her face to not seem conceited as Miyagi-Do and Eagle Fang cheered her on from behind her. "Ready?" The referee asked as the two girls got into their fighting positions.
"Fight!"
Sonny kicked her foot out again, this time hitting Devon on her arm. She cheered as Devon groaned at her second point, but the referee waved his hands around, shaking his head. "No point. That's shoulder. No point." He yelled, making Sonny and her team's cheers stop.
Sonny looked at the man with wide eyes . "What?" She asked but the man ignored her. "Keep fighting." He said and even though she was still in shock, she quickly got into her fighting stance and turned her attention back to her fight.
Devon made the first move for Sonny, going to punch her in the stomach, but Sonny blocked it.
Yet somehow, the referee counted that as a point and raised his hand that was closer to Cobra Kai. "Point. 1-1, Lee!" He yelled and not just Sonny, but Devon both looked at the man in shock.
Sonny was speechless. She could see Devon look to her with a shocked expression out of the corner of her eyes, but Sonny couldn't stop looking at the referee.
She noticed the man refused to even look at her and it made Sonny angry. She clenched her jaw and took a big breath as she got into fighting positions. If this ref was favoring Cobra Kai, she was going to have to make every point undeniable.
"Ready?" The man looked back and forth between the two girls and Sonny could've sworn she saw him look past Devon to Silver out of the corner of her eyes.
The man turned back to the girls and swung his arms down. "Fight!" He yelled and Sonny didn't waste a second to run at the younger girl. She sent punch after punch to Devon and she could tell the girl was struggling to block all of them.
While Devon was distracted guarding the upper half of her body from Sonny's punches, Sonny got onto the ground and swept Devon's legs. Once Devon hit the floor on her back, Sonny got up and punched her in the stomach.
"Point, Thompson. 2-1." The referee yelled and Sonny let out a relieved breath. Devon watched the girl with wide eyes, quickly standing up and getting into her fighting position.
Sonny pushed her two braids behind her shoulders and got into her fighting position.
"Fight!"
Devon let out a war cry as she swung her fist to hit Sonny in the gut. Sonny raised her hand and pushed Devon's fist away from her stomach with her forearm, blocking it. Just before Devon could retaliate and throw another punch, Sonny raised her foot and kicked her right in the chest.
A huge smile made its way onto Sonny's face. She could hear her team cheer for her as the referee slowly walked towards her. Once he was standing side by side with Sonny, he grabbed her hand and lifted it in the air in victory. "Point. Winner, Thompson."
Sonny cheered for her own victory, removing her hand from the referee's to run to her team. The first people she saw waiting for her on the edge of the mat were Demetri and Sam, their smiles as big as hers. Sonny laughed out of excitement as she jumped off the mat and into their arms for a hug.
...
After the Sekai Taikai sponsors talked over their decision on which dojo would earn the spot in the competition, the main sponsor, Gunther, smiled at all of the students in front of him. "As expected, we were impressed with the skills, precision and discipline of the new Sekai Taikai qualifier..."
Sonny nervously started to pick the nail polish off her nails and held her breath as she waited for their decision.
"Cobra Kai."
Sonny's heart sank and her shoulders slumped at the man's words. Her hands dropped, stopping her from ruining the white nail polish on her nails.
"As for our other dojo, we admired your unusual mix of styles and underdog spirit... and we think you could be a unique addition to the competition." Gunther said, confusing Miyagi-Do and Eagle Fang. All the teens, plus Johnny, Daniel, and Chozen, looked at the organizers with furrowed brows.
The man smiled at everyone's confused faces. "Therefore, we've decided that your dojo has also qualified."
Sonny's jaw dropped as her team cheered around her. She felt someone pull her into a hug and turned her head. Sonny smiled at Sam's embrace and quickly moved to return the hug.
"Congratulations, everyone, and welcome to the Sekai Taikai." Gunther said, and all of the students cheered. Sonny pulled away from Sam's hug just as Eli walked towards her. The boy had a sympathetic, almost lopsided, smile on his face
"Maybe one day we'll both win." Eli admitted with a shrug. Sonny smiled at Eli's words, watching as his smile turned into a laugh. Sonny pulled away from Sam's embrace completely and moved to hug Eli.
"Um... Way to leave me out!"
Sonny felt Hawk's chest shake from his laugh. The two of them pulled away from each other and were met with Demetri standing right beside them. Without saying a word, Eli grabbed Demetri's shoulder and added him into the hug while Sonny muttered a small "Get in here!"
"We've all earned this. Each and every one of you brought your A-game." Daniel said, making Sonny, Demetri, and Eli pull away from their group hug and the rest of the two teams turn to him, Chozen, and Johnny.
"Could not be more proud." Chozen said, his eyes mainly on Sonny, making her smile. Daniel nodded in agreement with Chozen, smiling at all of the students in front of him. "With this tournament in our future, we've got a lot of work to do. But tonight... Tonight, go celebrate!"
