☼sun and moon☾
After Miyagi-Do won the platform challenge, Sonny had originally planned to stay in her hotel room the rest of the night and finish reading the book she brought since Yasmine and Moon were having a sleepover and she didn't want to interrupt anything by calling.
But after Eli came barreling into their hotel room saying Miguel and Johnny headed back home, almost all of Miyagi-Do headed out to a local tapas bar on the beach. Sonny wasn't gonna go; she was gonna tell Eli she'd just stay back with Sam, who decided to stay back and rest up, but Sam encouraged the girl to go and have fun.
Sonny didn't think sitting in a booth with Devon, Eli, and Demetri was that fun considering Demetri was fighting with both her and Eli. She wanted to get out of the booth and sit with Robby at the bar, but Eli begged her to stay, not wanting to get stuck with Demetri and Devon.
"What are we gonna do now that Sensei Lawrence and Miguel are gone?" Devon asked, looking between the older three expectantly.
Eli sighed from beside Sonny, taking the tiny umbrella out of his mouth. "I heard they're gonna fly in Kenny." He shrugged out and Sonny's eyes widened. Before she could comment on it, Demetri scoffed from across the booth, rolling his eyes.
"Yeah, cause the kid that shit his pants is totally gonna save the day." He muttered and Hawk laughed from next to Sonny.
Sonny squinted at the two boys, taking a long sip of her drink as they continued to laugh at what happened to Kenny.
As soon as their laughter started to die down, Sonny lowered her drink and tilted her head at the boys. "Oh, thank you for your opinion, deadly farter and bed-wetter." Sonny said dryly.
Hawk and Demetri's faces fell while Devon snickered from across the booth. Sonny smiled at the fact that she got them to stop making fun of Kenny. She raised her glass to take another sip of her drink and looked into the cup when she only tasted melted ice.
Sonny sighed, realizing her glass was empty and started to move out of the booth. "I'm gonna get another drink. Does anyone want anything?" She asked and the three shook their heads.
Sonny walked to the bar, taking a seat beside Robby as she waited for the bartender to come toward her. She gave the boy a small smile that he very weakly returned as he swirled the drink in his cup.
"You okay?" She asked and Robby just hummed, maybe groaned as a response.
Sonny frowned, moving her leg so her knee would knock into his. "How about you come sit with the rest of us. It's gotta be pretty lonely here at the bar." Sonny suggested but Robby just shook his head, taking a sip of his drink.
"No, I'm alright."
Sonny opened her mouth to speak, to stop Robby and try to get him to sit with the rest of the team, but before the words could leave her mouth, another body sat down on the other side of Sonny.
"Hey, Sonny."
Sonny turned her head to see who was talking to her, and smiled at Maria. "Oh! Hey, Maria." She said with a smile even though she wanted to get back to her conversation with Robby.
Maria looked back, to the direction of Miyagi-Dos table and slowly started to smirk. "The boy with the mohawk... Is he single?" She asked, looking back to Sonny. Since the two girls met, they've been hanging out every now and then; the aquarium, the hotel lobby, in the training room, so Maria has gotten to hear about Moon and know Sonny wasn't dating Hawk.
Sonny snickered at the question, nodding her head almost immediately. "Very." Sonny laughed out, her eyes moving to Eli at their booth, his head thrown back in boredom as Demetri cornered Devon in some conversation.
When Sonny turned back to Maria, the girls eyebrows were raised. "So it'd be okay if I ask him to dance?" Maria asked and Sonny smiled, nodding her head. "I say go for it." She suggested. Sonny had never seen Eli with anyone and he's never talked to her about any girls he was seeing. It wouldn't help to push one into his direction, right?
Just then, the bartender walked toward the two girls. Maria turned to the man, nodding her head to Sonny. "Put her drink on my tab." Maria said and the man nodded.
Maria looked back to Sonny, muttering a small, "see ya" before she walked back toward the dance floor.
Sonny muttered a small goodbye back and once Maria, was gone, Sonny ordered her drink and walked back to her table. She made Eli get out of the booth so she could be on the inside when Maria came over to ask him to dance and even though he was a little confused, Hawk got out of the booth nonetheless and let Sonny sit down first.
"What did you get?" Eli asked, taking the girls drink before she could even answer. He took a sip and immediately gagged at the taste. "Nevermind. I don't care to know." He cringed out, passing Sonny her drink back.
Sonny chuckled, her eyes moving to behind Eli, watching Maria stare at Eli. "Maria keeps looking over here." Sonny hummed, raising her eyebrows to Eli as she brought her glass to her lips.
Hawk turned around to see what Sonny was talking about and his cheeks tinged pink when he noticed Maria was watching specifically him.
When he turned back to face front, Sonny smiled at him, nudging her elbow playfully into his ribs. "And you! You should go talk to her!" Sonny offered.
Eli's eyes almost popped out of his head and he turned to face Sonny next to him so fast, Sonny was shocked he didn't get whiplash. "What? No!" He whisper yelled and Sonny's eyebrows furrowed as her entire face scrunched.
"Why not?" She asked quietly, thinking maybe the boy was just nervous, especially when Eli struggled to come up with a reasoning.
"Because... um..." He looked down, trying to think of something, before his head raised back up once he came up with something. "What if she says no?"
Sonny's eyes moved just behind Eli and she watched as Maria started to make her wave over. "Considering she's coming over here, I don't think you have to worry about that." Sonny said, turning back to Eli and getting comfortable in the booth.
Eli looked back to see what Sonny was talking about and when he saw Maria, he turned back forward, nervously sinking into his seat. "Oh my God."
Maria smiled as she reached the four, leaning against the wall of the booth behind Hawk. Her eyes were on Sonny first, twiddling her fingers as a wave to the girl. "Hi, Sonny." She hummed and Sonny smiled, excited for Hawk.
"Hey, Maria."
Maria looked to the other end of the booth and gave Devon a small smile that the younger girl returned before she focused her attention on Demetri and Eli. "Que tal, boys? Having a fun night?"
"Yeah, fun night." Eli said nervously, making Maria's smile turn into a smirk over the fact that Eli was the one to answer her.
Her hand that was resting behind him, moved to graze the side of his mohawk. Maria's head tilted as she hummed. "I like your hair. It's so cute."
Eli blinked, his mouth open but no words coming out. After getting an elbow to the ribs from Sonny, Eli finally knocked himself out of his thoughts and answered. "Thank you." He breathed out.
"Do you want to dance?" Maria asked, her hand out for the boy to take.
Sonny watched excitedly from beside Eli as he looked back and forth between Maria's eyes and her outstretched hand before he finally settled on her eyes.
And then he shook his head.
"Um... I'm okay." He stuttered out.
Sonny and Maria's faces fell immediately. Maria turned to look at Sonny and the shorter girl immediately started to shake her head frantically as her shoulders started to raise defensively.
"I don't know!" She mouthed to Maria, shocked that Eli rejected the girl.
Maria blinked, not wanting to show how much the rejection affected her. She cleared her throat and turned to Demetri, her smirk coming right back. "Well, how about you, tall boy?" She hummed, her fingers grazing his shoulders flirtatiously.
Sonny expected Demetri to reject the girl just like Hawk had. He was the one who had a good reason to reject the girl: he had a girlfriend at home!
What Sonny didn't expect was for Demetri to eagerly and immediately nod his head. "Yes!" He practically screamed, making Eli, Sonny, and Devon's jaws drop.
They all watched as he grabbed Maria's hand and let her pull him out of the booth and toward the dance floor.
Sonny stared at the boy in shock and hurt, never believing Demetri would do this to Yasmine. "Demetri!" She yelled after him.
Demetri looked back to the three still at the booth, shrugging. "We're on vacation!" He yelled as if that makes up for what he was about to do.
Sonny's face twisted in disgust as she watched the boy walk further into the dance floor with a girl that wasn't his girlfriend. She was about to pull her phone out of her pocket right then and there, but she froze when saw the frown on Eli's face.
"Hey, are you okay?" Sonny asked, her hand reaching to touch Eli's shoulder.
As soon as Sonny's fingers touched Eli, the boy jumped as if Sonny's hand was on fire. The movement made Sonny flinch and she blinked in shock when Eli practically jumped out of the booth, muttering a small, "I'm going home."
He started to run out of the bar and Sonny was quick to follow him out. "I'll be back. Text me when you guys leave." Sonny told Devon, and the younger girl quickly nodded her head, understanding why Sonny was leaving.
Once Sonny got the response she needed from Devon, she focused her complete attention on her retreating best friend. She pushed through the crowd in the bar and when she reached the outside, her eyes quickly found Eli running down the beach and back toward the hotel.
Sonny had never been more grateful for that American flag mohawk.
"Eli! Eli, wait!" She yelled as she tried her hardest to catch up to him, but Eli was too fast.
"Eli!" Sonny chest started to tighten as the alcohol in her system finally started to hit her. Her legs ached and Sonny was certain her heart may stop if she kept running.
Her running came to a halt and Sonny placed her hands on her knees to catch her breath, watching as the figure of Eli got further and further away from her until he was no longer in her vision.
"Shit!"
As Sonny let herself catch her breath, she finally realized she wasn't alone on the beach. Her eyes moved to her right, landing on Axel, captain of the Iron Dragons as he practiced his kata.
Sonny swallowed down her heavy breathing, her throat burning from her running. "Sorry, I didn't mean to distract you from your kata." Sonny muttered, her voice a little raspy as moved her hands from her knees and took a few steps toward the boy.
Axel stared at Sonny as if he had been caught doing something he shouldn't have. He blinked, his mouth opening and closing in shock before he looked away from Sonny as if it would make her disappear. "I... I am not supposed to speak with opponent."
Sonny's eyebrows furrowed. "We're not on the mat and... I don't see your sensei anywhere." Sonny said, looking around the beach. They were completely alone, the closest people being the ones standing outside the tapas bar Sonny had just run out of.
Sonny turned back to Axel and pointed at the bar. "It's pretty late to be training, isn't it? There's a bar right across the street if you want to go inside and take a rest." She offered and Axel shook his head.
"Always time for training. Plus, I don't drink." He declined her offer and Sonny nodded, understating Axel's decision to not want to drink.
She took an another step toward him, smiling understandingly. "I get that." She said and Axel stared at her. When his team decided to go out tonight, Zara and a couple other teammates made fun of him for deciding to not go to the bar and wanting to train instead. Hearing someone not only understand but support his decision was nice.
He gave her a nervous smile and after unashamedly staring at her for a few seconds, Axel moved to pick his shirt up off the ground.
His back came into view for Sonny and she gasped at the big red bruises all over his back. She took a step toward him, reaching out but not touching him as her heart dropped. "Oh my God. What happened to your back?" She whispered in worry and almost instantly, Axel shot back up, nervously muttering "uh" and "um" as he threw his shirt back on.
"Bo staff competition." He answered and Sonny only squinted at him. She remembered the bo staff competition very well and she specifically remembers Hawk going up against Axel and never even scoring a point on him.
"Considering you kinda destroyed my teammate in that competition, I know it wasn't that." Sonny said and Axel gulped, looking to the ground.
Sonny frowned, shaking her head as she remembered the day she saw Axel and his sensei training, "Look, what your sensei is doing to you isn't–"
"My sensei wants me to be the best. It's because of him that I never lose." Axel interrupted, like he was trained to say it. Sonny just stared at the boy, shaking her head in shock. "Yeah, but you're sitting here at..." She pulled her phone out of her pocket and silently cringed at the time, she should be heading back to the hotel soon,
But that wasn't her main focus right now. Now, Sonny's main focus was this boy being hurt by someone he should trust, "Midnight training. Do you have a life outside of making your sensei proud?" Sonny finished her sentence. She shook her head, a breathy laugh leaving her mouth as she thought back to Axels fighting. "I mean... Don't get me wrong, you're pretty great at fighting."
Axel blushed at the compliment, nervously nodding his head. "Thank you. Your pretty... Your dojo's pretty good too." He stumbled out and Sonny cringed a little, but hid it by shaking her head.
"But that doesn't mean you should work yourself over." Sonny said, watching as Axels face fell, not out of sadness, but of realization.
He looked behind him, to the direction of the hotel, before he turned back to Sonny and smiled. "Mind if I join you then? I was going back to hotel." He asked, pointing to where Eli had run.
Sonny paused. She didn't want to be rude and say no considering they were both heading to the same place and they'd ultimately still end up walking together even if Sonny said no, but Sonny didn't know this boy.
She realized she had taken too long to answer and quickly nodded despite something in her gut telling her no. "Um... Sure."
Axel smiled at her answer, gesturing his hand to the hotel so Sonny could walk side by side with him. Sonny gave him a tight smile and walked toward him. As they started to walk, Sonny pulled out her phone and quickly texted Devon.
"walking home. pls keep an eye on my location"
The entire team gave each other their locations, something Sonny insisted on doing considering they would be in a country none of them had ever been in before.
Devon texted back almost instantly, sending a "<3" that calmed down her nerves.
Sonny pushed her phone back into her pocket just as Axel turned to look down at Sonny.
"I'm Axel, by the way." He said with a smile and Sonny's eyes moved up to the boy, sending him a small smile. "Sonny." She introduced herself and Axels eyebrows furrowed as a confused smile grew on his face.
"Sonny? Like..." Axel looked back and forth between Sonny and the sky before he pointed up, his eyebrows raised. "The Sun?" He laughed out and Sonny chuckled, nodding her head.
"Yeah." Sonny muttered through her laugh, her eyes moving to the ground to watch the gravel at her feet. She thought back to the first time she introduced herself to Johnny and he asked if her parents were high when they named her.
Sonny chuckled at the memory, making Axel look back down at her. "What do you think of Barcelona?" She asked once her laughter died down and Axel nodded his head, looking ahead of them.
"Reminds me of Koh Samui." He said and Sonny's eyes widened in interest. "You been to Thailand? That's so cool." Sonny breathed out like a little kid, which made Axel hum. He nodded his head and took a big step than normal. His body turned so he would walk backwards, facing Sonny.
"And Japan, China, Malaysia, India, every country in Europe." Axel said and Sonny's jaw dropped. She stared at the boy in front of her in shock for a couple seconds before she let out a choked laugh.
"Wow. The farthest I've traveled out of Los Angeles was Las Vegas when I was like six. My sister and I stayed at the amusement park inside Circus Circus while by parents did some gambling." Sonny said, pushing her hands into the pockets of her jacket when a cold breeze hit the alleyway her and Axel were walking down.
She felt the boys eyes on her, but Sonny kept her eyes forward. She didn't know why she was telling him everything. Maybe she just needed to tell someone and Axel just happened to get stuck. Maybe it was the fact that she knew after this competition, Sonny would never see him again so she can be completely transparent.
"I'm glad I'm able to be here though. I'm going to college across the country in the fall and being here... It really opened my eyes about the world, you know? Made me feel a little bit better about being far from home." Sonny shrugged her shoulders as she moved to look at the boy walking with her.
Axel smiled. "What do you hope to see while here?" He asked and Sonny laughed, shaking her head.
"Literally everything. I've been dragging my team to like... every tourist-y spot this place has."
"And you'll end this trip with fight for the world tournament of karate?" Axel hummed, his eyebrows raised in amusement. Sonny sighed, a tired smile on her face. God, she hoped she would win. Condensation left her lips with her sigh and she nodded. "Hopefully."
"Oh... Little rival team play-time."
Sonny stopped walking at the new voice. Her head turned and her eyes widened when she saw Cobra Kai starting to circle her and Axel. Sonny's eyes scanned the team, silently begging Tory wasn't there with them.
When she only saw boys, that only scared Sonny more. She may have felt better if Tory was there.
The captain, Kwon, walked right up to Sonny while Yoon got right up to Axel.
Sonny could feel someone stamina behind her so she knew she couldn't just turn and run. Sonny took a step forward, hoping to just push past Kwon and Yoon, but the two boys stepped toward each other, blocking Sonny's path.
Sonny looked up at Kwon, her jaw clenched, which made the boy smirk. "Say the magic words." Kwon hummed.
"Get the fuck out of my way." Sonny spat.
The boys behind her laughed and Kwon looked to Yoon as if to silently say "can you believe her?" before he turned back to Sonny.
"Wrong!" Kwon yelled, taking a step toward Sonny. The girl took a step back, her eyes staying glued on the boy in front of her. "Don't you have someone else to torment?" Sonny asked and Kwon chuckled.
"We do... But we won't go until you say please." Kwon said and Sonny suddenly felt her stomach churn in disgust.
As the same time, Sonny and Axels fists clenched. Yoon was able to notice the two readying up to fight and immediately jumped into action. Yoon threw a punch at Axel just as Sonny threw a punch at Kwon.
Kwon's head flew from Sonny's fist, not expecting her to actually make the first move. He'd seen the girl fight, but he hadn't really talked with her and gotten a chance to see what happens when you get under her skin.
Sonny looked back to the boys behind her and kicked the boy standing there straight in his chest, sending him to the floor. To make sure he stayed down, Sonny spun, sending a round kick to the boys head so he wouldn't get back up again to keep fighting her.
She could hear police sirens as she turned back to Kwon, the boy rubbing his jaw in pain. Sonny watched as the boy started to get angrier by the second and he let out a battle cry before he threw a punch at Sonny.
The girl raised her arms back and forth, blocking Kwon's repetitive punches aimed at her head. While her arms were up, Sonny wrapped her hands around the boys head and brought it down just as she raised her knee, slamming the boys head into it.
Yoon grabbed Kwon's arm once Sonny let go of him and started to pull him away from Axel and Sonny. "Shit! That's the cops. We can't get caught!" Yoon yelled as he started to drag Kwon away.
Sonny looked to Axel, who look unscathed and started to whack his elbow. "Axel, let's go." Sonny breathed out. Acel jumped at the girls contact, not knowing if it was another attacker or not.
Once he realized it was only Sonny, Axel nodded and the two ran out of the alley the way they came and back toward the beach.
Sonny looked back once her shoes hit the sand, checking to make sure none of the Cobra Kai's followed the two of them. When she saw no one around, Sonny slowed, her hands moving to her knees to catch her breath.
"Those douchebags." Sonny breathed out, running a hand through her hair. She pushed herself off of her knees and stood up straight, her head falling back to let the cool beach air hit her burning face.
She could see Axel watching her out of the corner of her eye and she craned her head enough to look at him and he smiled. "Nice roundkick." He said and Sonny laughed, turning to face him, or more so the exit of the alleyway they had just run out of.
Her focus was on the road, still making sure no Cobra Kai's were behind them. "Thanks. I think the coast is clear we can start heading back no—"
Sonny looked back to Axel and when she realized the boy was leaning toward her to kiss her, she jumped back and let out a loud scream.
Axel jumped back as Sonny's heart hammered in her chest in fright. She may have overreacted the longer she thought about it, but she was just scared and shocked to see a man move in to kiss her.
"I'm sorry. I thought..." Axel breathed out and Sonny immediately shook her head. "I'm in a relationship. I'm sorry if I gave you the wrong idea." Sonny said, putting her hand to her chest as she thought about her and Axels interactions. She was just being nice to him, did he really take that as flirting?
Axel blinked in shock when Sonny said she was already in a relationship. He felt his mouth go dry and he quickly gulped to relieve the feeling. "Already after curfew. I... I must go. Sorry. Bye."
With that, Axel ran away and back toward the hotel. Sonny didn't stop him, only watched him leave with furrowed eyebrows.
"What the hell was that?" Sonny whispered to herself, looking around as if someone else was there with her to react with her. Sonny looked back to the hotel and sighed. It was getting late and all she wanted was to lay down.
As she started to walk back toward the hotel, Sonny pulled her phone out of her pocket to call Moon. She had been holding back calling the girl all night since she was having a sleepover with Yasmine, but now that Sonny had to tell Moon about Axel and tell Yasmine about Demetri, Sonny decided to just call the girl.
She hit the FaceTime button and kicked the sand beneath her feet as she walked back to the hotel, the night air doing little to settle the nervous energy bubbling in her chest. After a moment, Moon's face appeared on the screen, her hair falling in loose waves over her shoulders and a huge smile on her face at the sight of her girlfriend.
"Hi, baby!" Moon greeted with a soft smile. "What's up? Are back at the hotel?"
Sonny exhaled sharply, running a hand through her hair. "Um... No. I'm walking back now but something happened, and I wanted to talk to you about it." Sonny said, trying her hardest not to sound nervous and scare Moon.
Moon's expression shifted instantly, concern softening her features. "What happened? Are you okay?" She asked and Sonny nodded. "Yeah just... this guy tried to kiss me and well— I screamed in his face. Like literally screamed in terror and jumped away, but I still wanted to tell you about it."
Moon's eyes widened briefly, but instead of anger, there was a calm in her tone. "Oh, Sonny. Are you okay?" Moon asked and Sonny immediately nodded her head to try and not worry Moon,
"I'm fine." Sonny assured her, though her voice trembled slightly, but it was more because of the cold. "It just... caught me off guard, you know? I wasn't expecting it."
Moon nodded slowly, her tone gentle. "I'm sorry that happened. Did you know him?"
"Yeah, he was just some guy for one of the other teams." Sonny explained, biting her lip. "Also... is Yasmine in the room with you?" Sonny asked, her eyebrows creasing together.
Moon hesitated for half a second before tilting the phone. "Yas? Sonny's on the phone for you." Moon said and when Yasmine's face suddenly appeared in the frame, Sonny felt the pit in her stomach sink further.
"What's up, Sonny?" Yasmine asked, confused but excited to hear from Sonny. They had been texting since Sonny went to Barcelona, but they hadn't called so she was happy to hear from the girl.
Sonny straightened, her stomach twisting nervously. "I, uh, something happened tonight, and you deserve to know." Sonny stuttered out and Yasmine raised an eyebrow. "Okay..."
Sonny shut her eyes and took a deep breath of encouragement. Her mind flashed the angry Demetri she'd have to face in the future, but she knew she needed to tell Yasmine. "Demetri was dancing with another girl at the bar."
Sonny gulped as she watched Yasmine's face drop. It was subtle—her lips tightened, her posture stiffened—she didn't let much show, but Sonny noticed it.
"You're my friend," Sonny said shakily. "You and Demetri are two of my closest friends, and even though he'll be so mad at me, I knew you'd do the same for me. I just thought you deserved to know."
Yasmine stared at her for a moment, then let out a slow breath, nodding her. "Thanks for telling me," Yasmine said, her voice quiet. Sonny relaxed slightly, her her heart was still racing.
Yasmine muttered something under her breath about Demetri, then said, "Excuse me—I need to make a very angry phone call." She disappeared from the screen, leaving Sonny and Moon alone again.
Moon sighed, giving Sonny a nervous look through the screen. "Are you okay? Like, really okay? Are you drunk or anything? Where's the rest of the group to walk with you?"
Sonny shook her head, a small smile tugging at her lips. "Sam and Eli are at the hotel and Robby, Demetri, and Devon are still at the bar. And I'm not drunk. And I've got my wallet, my phone—everything's good."
Moon's shoulders relaxed. "Okay, good. Do you want me to stay on the phone while you walk? I don't like you being out there alone." Moon said and Sonny's smile deepened. She was gonna ask Moon to stay in the phone with her during her walk anyway.
"Yes, please. And thank you." Sonny muttered and Moons smile softened, her head tilting as she watched the girl. "Always, baby." Moon hummed, her voice gentle like she was singing.
For the rest of Sonny's walk to the hotel, Sonny told Moon all about her night: Miguel and Johnny leaving, Maria asking Eli to dance and then Eli running out and anything else she could think of.
