Sonny didn't think the Sekai Tailai could get any worse after it was revealed Tory was with Cobra Kai and that the Iron Dragons really knew how to kick ass but by the third event (where Miyagi-Do did horrible), Sonny was proven wrong.

Johnny and Daniel yelled over each other every time a student went up. The two men completely contradicted each other, knocking which ever teen was competing out of focus and making Miyagi-Do lose as a whole.

Sonny didn't want to show her face after how badly her team had done. She walked out of the arena with her head down, missing Maria's wave as she passed her, and just sticking close to Sam so she wouldn't run into anybody.

When they made it back to the hotel, she started to make a beeline towards the elevators before Daniel's voice stopped her at the other six students.

"Everyone, listen up."

Once all seven students were circled around Daniel and Johnny, Daniel continued. "All right, this morning's event was tough, but let's not get discouraged just yet. We have two more events today. And eliminations don't begin till the second one."

"Whoa, whoa, whoa. If that wasn't the elimination round, what is? Getting our heads cut off with swords?" Demetri asked from the other end of the circle.

Sonny, standing directly across from him, sighed as she crossed her arms. "Don't jinx anything..." She muttered under her breath, but Demetri heard her and immediately raised his hands in surrender.

Daniel eyed the two, not liking their negativity. "We knew this wasn't gonna be easy. We're going up against the best dojos in the world, but don't forget you guys are one of them too." He said, making Sonny turn away from Demetri and back to Daniel. Her eyes softened at her sensei's words. After how horrible they had all been doing, Sonny need to hear that.

"Yeah, so you better start fighting like it." Johnny snapped, startling Sonny and making her flinch slightly.

Daniel looked at Johnny as if he were insane. "Johnny, come on, man." He breathed out, scolding the man before he turned back to the students. "The best thing you can do right now is just clear your minds, get some rest, put this behind you. You got this, all right ? I believe in you."

Sonny smiled at her sensei's, nodding her head. Her stomach growled as she, Sam, and Devon started to walk towards the elevators so she quickly turned to make a detour to the small cafe in the lobby.

Just as she turned to start walking, Sonny felt one of the boys run up to walk with her.

"Hey." Eli breathed out, trying to catch his breath from running to catch up with Sonny. "Your room has two beds, right?" He asked, not giving Sonny time to return his greeting.

"Yeah..." Sonny said, side-eyeing Hawk through her lashes before she spoke again. "Why?" She asked, even though part of her knew what he was going to ask.

Hawk cringed a little and turned to face her as they entered the cafe. "Can I please stay with you?" He asked and Sonny sighed, grabbing a blueberry muffin.

"Hawk..." She groaned, starting to walk towards the register. Sonny placed the muffin on the counter and gave the cashier a smile.

"I can't stay with Demetri another night. You know how he gets." He complained and Sonny rolled her eyes, handing her card to the cashier and finally turning to Eli. "We've been having sleepovers with him for the past decade. You should be immune to his farts by now." Sonny said, grabbing her muffin and starting to walk away.

She heard Eli chase after her until he was by her side again. "It's not just that. He won't shut up about MIT and I'm getting really sick of it." Eli muttered, his hands going to his head in annoyance.

Sonny playfully raised her eyebrows, a small smirk on her face. "So instead, you want to room with me so I can brag about MIT." She said and Hawk groaned as they reached the elevator. The rest of their team was gone by now, taking the elevator while the two of them went to the cafe.

Sonny laughed at Hawk annoyance and turned to smile at the boy as she hit the elevator button. "I'm kidding." She said and as the elevator doors opened, Sonny cringed.

"I do have a nightlight though so..." She muttered, stepping into the elevator.

Hawk scoffed out a laugh at her words, following her in. "You still sleep with a nightlight?" He laughed out. Sonny glared at the boy, pressing the floor his and the other boys room was on.

"Watch it. I'm surprised I don't have to buy you puppy pads incase you wet the bed." Sonny snapped back and immediately, Hawk looked away from Sonny, making the girl smile triumphantly.

The two bickered the rest of the way to the hotel room, Hawk claiming what Sonny said was a "low blow" but Sonny said he couldn't take a joke and it wasn't like anyone else heard her.

When they got to the boys room, Hawk let the two of them in with his key and after explaining to Miguel and Demetri that he was gonna stay with Sonny, Hawk got to packing while Sonny sat at the desk.

"What if we just skip the rest of the events? Hit Las Ramblas, pick up some churros?" Demetri asked, laying in his and Robby's shared bed as he skimmed through the travel brochure.

Sonny looked up from her phone as Hawk stopped packing, shaking his head. "What? You're already giving up?" He asked and Demetri placed the brochure beside him and sat up, throwing his arms up.

"Let's be realistic here. There's no way that we can win. At this point, I'd rather not lose any more brain cells." He muttered. Sonny leaned forward from her seat and snatched the brochure off of Demetri's bed and started to look through it.

Hawk rolled his eyes as he tossed a shirt into his suitcase. "Oh my God, dude, we get it. You're going to MIT. Let them know about your rank-ass farts." He complained, grumbling the last part but Demetri heard her.

He whipped his head to Eli, his mouth opening and closing in shock. "No. That was not me." Demetri sputtered. Sonny put her feet up onto the chair and raised her eyebrows in amusement at Demetri lying.

"Just saying. Whoever denied it, supplied it." Eli said and Demetri mocked the boy.

Sonny snickered, looking up from the brochure to laugh, but her face fell when she saw the frown on Miguel's face. Sonny dropped the brochure on the desk as her eyebrows creased together. "Hey, you okay?" She asked, making Eli and Demetri turn to Miguel too.

"You fought really well." Eli said, hoping to cheer Miguel up, but Miguel just sighed, tiredly rubbing his eye. "Thanks but... that's not what I'm worried about. I don't know what's going on in Robby's head, but he's not fighting the same."

Sonny frowned. She wasn't blind. She could see how often Robby would get distracted because of Tory both in and off the mat. But she also completely understood where he was coming from. If Moon did karate and she switched sides to Cobra Kai, she'd be a wreck.

"He's probably still bummed about Tory being in Cobra Kai." Sonny shrugged, hoping to get some of the blame off of Robby.

Miguel looked up to Sonny, shaking his head. "Well, he needs to get over it." He snapped, making Sonny blink in shock but she didn't take his tone to heart as he continued. "At this rate, it's not going to matter if we advance cause he's gonna be the one fighting for us in the finals even if you do great, Sonny. We're screwed."

Sonny looked down after that. She hadn't even thought about how if Miyagi-Do did make it to the finals, it'd be her and Robby fighting for the team. If Robby gets distracted during that, Miyagi-Do is done for.

"I don't know if it means anything but... we all think it should be you out there." Hawk admitted quietly since Robby was in the bathroom showering. Sonny licked her lips and guiltily nodded her head.

"He's right." She muttered, making Miguel's head shoot up to look at her. He turned to Demetri, who was scratching his eyebrow. "It's true. Yeah."

Then, the lock of the bathroom door clicked and quickly, Hawk went back to packing and Sonny reopened the brochure in her hands, pretending to read it as Robby walked out.

She tried to look up as casually as she could so Robby wouldn't know they were talking about him, but as Sonny lifted her head, so did Miguel, Hawk, and Demetri.

Robby squinted at all of the eyes on him, tucking the towel tighter in his waist. "What?" He asked and Sonny shook her head to silently say "nothing" and looked back down at the brochure.

"Uh, nothing, no. We were just sleuthing the cold case of who cut the cheese last night." Demetri scrambled for an excuse. The boys and Sonny nodded in agreement and Demetri smiled, flopping back down onto the bed. "And as we all know, whoever smelt it..." He pointed finger guns at Hawk. "Dealt it."

Eli rolled his eyes, zipping up his suitcase and flipping Demetri off. Demetri quietly mocked Hawk again, flipping him off right back.

Sonny closed the brochure and tossed it back to Demetri and stood up. She was tired of the two boys arguing about farts and grabbed her bag off the floor. "Yeah, well, if it keeps happening tonight, we know who it wasn't." She taunted, wiggling her finger at Demetri.

Demetri flipped Sonny off just like he had Hawk and Sonny hummed, twisting her palm to face up and switching which finger was out so she was flipping him off now, no longer pointing at him.

Sonny turned back to Hawk, raising her eyebrows as she watched him sling his duffel bag over his shoulder and grab the handlebar of his luggage. "You ready to go?" She asked and Hawk looked up at Sonny as he unwrapped a lollipop.

He pushed the candy into his mouth and nodded, muttering a "yeah" that Sonny could barely understand because of the lollipop.

...

Sonny split up with Hawk on her way to the arena for the next round. She pulled her water bottle out of her training bag and almost gagged at how warm it was so she left to go find ice. Sonny still had around ten minutes so she didn't feel too rushed, she just didn't know where she could find some ice.

She could've sworn she remembered seeing Devon fill her bottle with ice the day before in the training rooms.

As she walked through the halls, Sonny peaked through every open door in hopes she'd find an ice machine and after the fifth door, Sonny still found no ice but she did see the Iron Dragons male captain training one on one with his sensei.

The boy, Sonny couldn't remember his name but it was something like "Alex" or "Ace" or something, was throwing punches at his sensei's gloves hands when the man suddenly dropped his arms.

"Stop." The sensei said and the boy dropped his fists. The sensei suddenly struck the boy in the side of his head.

Sonny gasped, taking a small step back so neither of them would see her. Her heart was beating so fast, Sonny was a little scared they would hear it.

"What are you doing wrong?" The man asked the boy and instead of letting him answer, the sensei raised his hands again.

The boy threw a punch and his sensei nodded. "Again." He instructed.

The boy tried again and when he messed up, Sonny closed her eyes for a second. Part of her was screaming to step forward but this man was terrifying. If he was able to hurt this kid that was twice her size, Sonny didn't even want to imagine what the man would do to her.

She opened her eyes just as the sensei took off his glove and struck the boy three more times. Sonny flinched as the boy bent away from his sensei's hits.

Sonny's breath was caught in her throat and when the boy opened his eyes, they landed right on her. Sonny's eyes doubled in size. She looked back and forth between the boy and the hallway before quickly walking away, completely forgetting about the ice she wanted and instead headed straight for her team in the arena.

She made it just to her team as the round started and her eyebrows furrowed when she didn't see Daniel anywhere.

"In this final points round, competitors will try to knock their opponents off their platforms. Once you've fallen, you are out. Points are determined off of wins, losses, and time. Final rankings after this event will determine placement in tonight's elimination round."

Sonny looked to the platforms she'd have to fight on and let out a small breath of relief over the fact that it was only around a foot high.

"All right. Listen up!" Johnny yelled, making Sonny look back to him, her and the rest of her team crowding around him tighter.

"Looks like I'm taking charge, so we're doing things differently. No more waiting around like scared little bitches, waiting for them to come to you, all right? You go at them. Aggressive. Knock them off first." Johnny said and Sonny nervously bit her lip.

From across the circle, she watched Sam look at the platforms before locking eyes with Sonny. They both knew those platforms were way too narrow to be aggressive. They'd have to use Miyagi-Do.

"Those platforms are really narrow. My dad would want balance." Sam said and Johnny sarcastically raised his eyebrows at the girl.

"Yeah, well, your dad's not here. All right? It's time for us to start scoring some points." He shot back, making Sam blink in shock.

"Sora Haruto from Kirobukan on platform one. Devon Lee from Miyagi-Do on platform two."

The announcement made Sonny turn to Devon beside her, the younger girl looking like she was one inconvenience away from running out of the room.

"Don't let me down, Lee." Johnny said and Devon quickly nodded. "Yes, sensei." She muttered, barely loud enough for anyone to hear hear before she walked towards the platform.

Just like Johnny said to do, Devon fought aggressive against her opponent. She spun, throwing her leg out to kick the girl she was fighting and the girl ducked, dodging Devon's kick. Because of how narrow the platforms, Devon lost her balance trying to feet the right footing and immediately, opponent kicked Devon in the back and knocked her off the platform.

"Lee out. Time, ten seconds." Rang through the speakers and Sonny sighed, dropping her head. As Devon walked back towards her team Johnny huffed. "We need to do better. You all need to step up. Let's do this!" He snapped and Sonny frowned.

When Devon got close enough to her, Sonny wrapped her arm around the girl, rubbing her hand up and down the girls arm. "It's alright. That kick you did was badass." Sonny whispered. Devon looked up at Sonny and she could see Devon's frown twist into a smile just a tad.

"Maria Alvarez from Furia de Pantera on platform one. Sonny Thompson from Miyagi on platform two."

Sonny turned to the platform as her arm slowly dropped from around Devon.

"Come on, Thompson! You've got this!" Johnny yelled while Hawk patted Sonny on the back, quietly telling her good luck before she walked towards the platform.

Itwobbled slightly as she and Maria took their places. Sonny looked up from her feet and to the girl across from her and was shocked to see Maria smile at her. Sonny smiled back, glad this fight won't end in some new rivalry and got into position.

At the signal, Maria moved first and Sonny dodged the first punch, her feet steady as the platform shifted beneath them. Maria tried to hit Sonny with a low kick, but Sonny hopped over it. Midair, Sonny realized how familiar the movements felt. Balancing, landing softly, adjusting her weight—it all reminded her of cheerleading.

Maria attacked again, aiming higher this time, but Sonny spun, avoiding the hit. Her cheer routines had taught her how to control her momentum in tight spaces. The platform swayed, but Sonny stayed in control.

As Maria came in with another strike to the chest, Sonny saw her opening. She stepped back, planting her weight on her back foot, and swung her leg upward in a high kick.

Her foot connected with Maria's face—not too hard, but with enough force to break her balance. Maria stumbled, her arms flailing as she tried to steady herself, but the kick sent her tumbling off the platform onto the padded floor below.

"Alvarez out. Time, fifty-five seconds."

Sonny hopped off the platform and started to walk back toward her team. Johnny yelled, clapping his hands in excitement before he pointed at Sonny. "That's how we should be doing it, guys!" He yelled before he turned to Sonny and held out his fist for a fist bump. "Badass, Thompson."

Sonny smiled, returning the fist bump. "Thank you, Sensei." She said with a big grin and as she walked past the man, he patted her back with a sense of pride.

Sonny walked right up to Hawk, who had his eyebrows raised at her. "All that cheerleading is really helping you in this thing, huh?" He chuckled out and Sonny sighed in happiness.

"Yep." She said, popping the "p" at the end. "Gonna call Moon tonight and tell her it's all thanks to her for having my join the cheer team." Sonny said, a big smile on her face as she thought about being able to call Moon after this round was done.

As time went on, Miyagi-Do's would get called up and everyone lost their fights except Miguel, who won his fight in 40 seconds.

By the end of the round, Miyagi-Do moved to twelfth place. Sure, Sonny was bummed, but she wasn't necessarily mad at anyone on the team specifically. They were all frazzled by Johnnys yells telling them to be aggressive despite this round needing to focus on balance.

Sonny mindlessly started to follow her team out of the arena, her arm linked with Hawks as she rubbed her temples, her french braids starting to give her a massive headache.

"Hey! Where the hell do you think you're going?" Johnny yelled and the seven students stopped. Demetri looked down at himself and cringed. "Back to the hotel to wash off this disgrace." He muttered.

Johnny shook his head, an angry look on his face. "You're not getting off that easy. Locker room. Now."

He turned and started walking toward the locker room after that, not even turning around to see if any of the kids followed him.

The walk to the locker room was silent. Johnny walked in first and stood in the dead center of the room. He silently raised his arm and passive aggressively signaled for them all to sit down on the benches.

Sonny sat on the edge of the bench directly in front of Johnny. Robby sat down next to her, then Miguel, and then Hawk.

"What I saw from you just now, it wasn't karate. It was weakness! You fought like little lambs waiting for slaughter. We keep going like this, we get eliminated tonight!" Johnny yelled and Sonny immediately looked down at her senseis words. She leaned back into the lockers, too nervous to bring her finger up to bite her nail and settled on chewing at her bottom lip.

"Some of you will put this behind you. But some of you are gonna carry this for the rest of your lives. Knowing you had this chance to make something of yourselves. But instead, you crumbled under pressure." Johnny spat as he started to pace. "And you're gonna go on to live shit lives in shitty apartments with shit jobs. And always have to live with this failure!"

Sonny stared at the mans shoes, part of her too nervous and too embarrassed to meet his eyes even though she won her match.

"So if you wanna save some humiliation, why don't we just skip the next round and catch the next flight home?" Johnny yelled, and Sonny finally looked up at him. Johnny shook his head, and as if all of his anger came out with his yelling, he now only looked disappointed. "What is wrong with you guys? Where's your fight? Aren't you gonna stand up for yourselves."

"It's not all our fault." Sam blurted, making Sonny look away from Johnny and to her. Sonny's eyes were wide and her jaw hung a little as Sam's eyes moved to lock with hers for a split second before they turned back to Johnny. "You keep blaming us like this isn't on you too! If my dad had been there, we never would've lost like this."

"Yeah, well he wasn't there." Johnny sassed back.

"Probably because of you!" Sam yelled. Sonny let out a quiet gasp as Sam started to shake her head. "You keep disrespecting him, trying to prove your way is better, when it's so clear that we should be using Miyagi-Do. You shouldn't even be wearing that gi." Sam spat, shocking Sonny.

But what shocked Sonny even more was Devon shooting up out of her seat and getting right in Sam's face. "Hey! Don't talk about my sensei like that!"

Sam raised her eyebrows, her arms crossing over her chest as she took a step closer to Devon. "Your sensei got you knocked off the board in ten seconds so I would sit down if I were you! You're not helping us! I don't even know how you made this team!" Sam spat and Sonny pulled her lips into a line to hold back her shocked and very uncomfortable laugh.

Sonny watched as all of the confidence Devon had yelling at Sam wash away in seconds. She felt bad for the girl as she sat back down and stared at the ground in embarrassment.

Demetri sighed from beside her, wanting to kill the awkward silence. "Well, I, for one, will be putting all of this behind me when I'm off to MI–"

"Shut the fuck up about MIT!" Eli yelled. Demetri looked to Eli with wide eyes and Sonny quicklu pulled her knees up onto the bench and into her chest.

Eli leaned forward so he could see Sonny on the other end of the bench they were sharing and pointed at her from over Miguel and Robby. "You don't hear Sonny yapping about it 24/7! Some of us actually care about winning the tournament. Be nice if you did too." Eli snapped.

"Guys, can we please not do this? We need to focus up." Robby groaned, a small clammer echoing in the room as he leaned back against the lockers like Sonny had.

"Seems like you should listen to your own advice." Miguel muttered.

Sonny closed her eyes and dropped her head into her knees.

"Got something to say?" Robby asked.

"I already did." Sonny heard Miguel respond before he stood up and started walking out of the locker room.

"Hey, I'm not finished." Johnny said, but Sonny's head was still in her knees, so she couldn't see what was happening.

"No offense, but I'm pretty sure we've heard enough from you." Miguel said, walking out of the room.

One by one, Sonny could hear her teammates around her stand up and leave the room.

"Guys, come on." Johnny said and Sonny finally felt Robby start to get up from next to her.

"Robby?" Johnny asked, and Robby sighed. "Sorry, dad." He muttered, walking out of the room.

It was quiet after that. Sonny silently hoped that she was still enough that maybe sensei had forgotten about her.

"Thompson? You good?" Johnny asked, making Sonny groan over the fact that she wasn't as invisible as she thought. She pushed her knees off of the bench and sat up straight.

"Yeah." She groaned, starting to get up. Sonny started to take the hair tie out of one of her braids as walked up to her sensei. "Quick tip: kicking your team when they're down is not gonna help us win. It will only tear us apart from the inside out and we're already doing that too." Sonny said and Johnnys eyebrows raised, shocked that Sonny was saying anything defiant against him.

With that, Sonny tiredly walked out of the locker room, running a hand through her now down hair.
