fifty eight.

i told you things

Sonny walked into the hotel around twenty-five minutes after telling Yasmine about Demetri and Maria. Still on FaceTime with Moon, Sonny looked down at her camera and smiled tiredly. "I made it!" She silently cheered, knowing how late it was and not wanting to disturb other residents because of her volume.

Moon smiled softly. "I'm glad you made it back safely, baby." She hummed, which made Sonny's smile deepen.

"I don't know if she'll be safe for long..."

Sonny looked up at the sound of Devon's voice and froze.

Devon stood by the elevators, her wide eyes filled with panic, but it was the person standing next to her who made Sonny's stomach drop. Demetri's face was set in a scowl, his gaze locked on Sonny.

Sonny gulped, looking back down at her phone as Demetri turned around to press the button to the elevator. "I'll call you in the morning. I've got to go. I love you." Sonny said and even though Moon couldn't see what Sonny saw, she took a wild guess based off of her girlfriends reaction and cringed.

"I'll talk to you later. I love you." Moon said back softly, mouthing a "good luck" right after so Demetri wouldn't hear her. Sonny smiled at her words, nodding her head softly before she hang up.

As Sonny pushed her phone into her pocket, the elevator dinged and the doors opened. Demetri walked into the elevator first, and Devon followed reluctantly, sending Sonny a pleading look over her shoulder.

Sonny considered taking the stairs—five flights of them seemed better than being trapped in the metal box with Demetri—but Devon's silent plea made her freeze in place.

After a few moments of battling herself, Sonny sighed and slowly walked toward the elevator.

She felt as if she was walking into her own death sentence. Her eyes glued to the floor as Devon shrank behind the two of them, hoping to avoid whatever explosion was coming and the shrapnel that would come with.

Sonny's hands shook at her sides as the doors started to close at a painfully slow rate.

Demetri waited until the doors in front of them closed completely, giving him the privacy he needed to practically spin around to face Sonny.

"I cannot believe you would rat me out to Yas! She dumped me!" Demetri spat, his voice filled with venom as he pointed to himself and glared down at who he considered one of his best friends.

Sonny flinched at his tone, a pang of guilt twisting in her chest—but it was quickly smothered by rising anger. Yes, Sonny was sad for the couples breakup, but at the same time, she felt an anger bubble in her stomach. This wasn't her fault!

"Don't blame me!" Sonny snapped, her voice louder than intended as she whipped around to face him.

Her eyebrows scrunched together in disgust while Demetri's eyes could've popped out of his head. "Don't blame you?" Demetri's voice rose before he threw his arms out dramatically. "You called her!"

"Because you were dancing with another girl!" Sonny fired back, jabbing her finger into his chest for emphasis. Demetri stumbled back a step, his face reddening.

Devon flinched at the escalating volume, pressing herself into the corner as if trying to disappear.

"What was I supposed to do?" Sonny demanded, her voice shaking with frustration. "Just let you dance with another girl and not tell your girlfriend?"

The elevator dinged, signaling their floor, but Demetri wasn't done. As the doors slid open, he scoffed and stormed out, throwing his words over his shoulder. "You were fine with the idea of Eli dancing with her! You're just mad it was me!"

Sonny didn't want to fight in the hallway. It was late, and there were other guests trying to get sleep.

But Sonny hated that Demetri was trying to pin this all on her so she didn't hesitate to stomp after him, the anger in her stomach bubbling up to her throat.

"I was completely okay with the idea of Eli dancing with her because Eli isn't in a relationship!" Sonny yelled after him, her voice louder than her steps toward the boy. She was sure the two of them had already woken up their floor or was close to it.

Demetri whirled around, his sudden movement making Sonny stumble to a halt.

"Maybe you just couldn't handle that she wanted me over you!" He seethed, taking another step toward Sonny, erasing the distance she made between them when she stepped away.

He jabbed his finger into Sonny's chest just like Sonny had with him. The burning feeling in the cushion-y skin just underneath the girls collarbone was ignored by Sonny as her jaw dropped. The sheer absurdity of what Demetri had said was making her furious.

"Excuse me?" Sonny hissed, her voice dripping with disbelief.

Demetri raised his eyebrows, only pissing Sonny off more. "Maybe you were just jealous Maria wanted Eli and me over you!"

"Are you fucking kidding me?" Sonny took a step closer, her eyebrows raised in disbelief. "Why the hell would I care about Maria wanting you or Eli? I have Moon! A girlfriend who I love!"

Her voice cracked on the last word, and she took another step closer, her eyes narrowing. "Do you even know what that's like? To actually love your girlfriend?" Sonny asked, her voice quieter, but still filled with venom.

She watched as Demetri's lips curled and his eyes jumped back and forth between both of hers, almost as if he was fighting with himself. For a second, it seemed like he might back down, but then the words tumbled out.

"Fuck you, Sonny!"

Both of the teens froze. Sonny's lips parted slightly in shock, the sting of his words sinking in slowly. Demetri's face shifted almost instantly, his anger melting into guilt as his gaze flickered to the glint of tears in Sonny's eyes.

She bit down hard on her trembling lip, refusing to let the tears spill over.

"If you don't want to face the consequences of your actions," Her voice was barely above a whisper, but she kept going. "Maybe don't do fucked-up shit."

Demetri's mouth opened and his hand lifted to reach out for her. But before his fingers could brush her sleeve, Sonny turned on her heel and walked away.

"Some people just can't take fucking accountability." Sonny cursed under her breath as she passed Devon.

Devon stayed rooted in place for a moment, wide-eyed. She watched Sonny go until the older girl was out of her line of sight.

Shakily, Devon's eyes moved to the boy in front of her. He stood there, his arm still outstretched, the hollow ache of her absence sinking deep into his chest. Demetri was shaking, but no longer out of anger. The guilt and regret was eating him alive that not only had his stubbornness driven Eli away, but now, Sonny too.

Sonny walked into the hotel room and saw Eli lying on his bed, already in his pajamas and his hair down. Sonny scoffed tiredly. "Thank goodness you made it back safe." She muttered, making a beeline to her suitcase to grab some pajamas for herself.

Sonny normally took night showers, but it was too late and Sonny was too tired. The water would've woken her up.

"Yeah, I thought you were chasing after me? What took you so long?" Eli asked sarcastically, looking up from his phone to squint at Sonny on the floor.

Once she found some pajamas, Sonny stood up and sighed. "Cobra Kai cornered me." She muttered as she walked toward the bathroom.

Eli shot up, his eyes wide as he crawled toward the edge of the bed to get closer to the girl, but Sonny only walked past him. "What? Are you okay?" He asked, looking her up at down for any blood or bruises.

Sonny walked into the bathroom and left an inch open, giving her privacy to change but still letting her talk. She sighed as she peeled off her shirt. "I'm fine. I was with one of the guys from Iron Dragons."

From his bed, Eli's face scrunched in confusion. He looked toward the bathroom, even though his eyes were only met with the wall since the bathroom and his bed were adjacent to each other. "What? The only people not in Miyagi-Do I've seen you talk to is Tory and Maria. When have you ever hung out with the Iron Dragons?"

"I haven't. And I don't really plan to again. Not after he tried to kiss me." Sonny grumbled, thinking Eli wouldn't be able to hear the last part of her words, but her voice was loud and clear to the boy.

It was almost cartoonish how wide Eli's eyes got. "He tried to kiss you?!" Eli practically yelled as Sonny finished changing into her pajamas. She walked out of the bathroom and gave Eli a pointed look as she walked back toward her suitcase.

"Gross, I know." She hummed, tossing the clothes she was wearing at the bar into her luggage. Sonny sighed, deciding that would be tomorrow's problem. "Luckily, he got the hint. And by that I mean I screamed when he leaned in." Sonny explained, falling back onto her bed and bouncing when her back hit the mattress.

"Then I just called Moon on the walk home and told her about it. And then told Yasmine about Demetri." Sonny sighed, already starting to feel comfortable now that she was back in her hotel room after her long night.

Eli"s eyes were wide again. He was starting to think he should just keep his wide eyed expression on the rest of the conversation considering how many shocking things Sonny's dropped on him.

"You told Yasmine?" Eli whispered as if his words would summon Demetri himself.

Sonny turned to Hawk with an offended look. "Of course! It doesn't matter if I'm closer to Demetri than I am with her. He fucked up and she should know about it. It's the kind thing to do. If Moon cheated on me, I would want Yasmine to tell me." Sonny explained, looking back up to the ceiling as her words finished,

Eli stared at Sonny for a second. It happened so fast, Eli almost thought it didn't happen, but staring at her, he could see the five year old girl he became friends with all those years ago. He almost didn't recognize her. That Sonny—and even the Sonny he knew a year ago, would've been terrified going behind Demetri's back.

A small chuckle left his lips, finally turning away from the girl and up to the ceiling. "Demetri's gonna kill you." He muttered. His words made Sonny scoff and out of the corner of his eyes, Eli could see her shake her head as she looked up to the ceiling too.

"I already got yelled at in the elevator... and the hallway..."

Sonny sighed again, her lips trilling in annoyance. "Apparently, I'm jealous Maria wanted to dance with him and not me." Sonny hummed sarcastically. Her head turned to Eli just as the boy looked to her. Eli was right—he should've just kept his eyes wide the rest of the conversation.

"He's kidding, right?" Eli asked before sitting up and scooting to the edge of the bed so he was closer to Sonny. "He said you were jealous that Maria wanted to dance with him?" Eli asked and Sonny's lips pressed into a line as she nodded.

"Yep. As if I'm not in a happy and healthy relationship with my girlfriend. Who does he think he is?!" Sonny spat, looking back up to the ceiling.

Eli stared at Sonny for a second after that, her words echoed in his mind.

Happy.

Girlfriend.

Eli shifted until his back was pressed against his headboard. He stared down at his now fidgeting hands. His knee bounced anxiously, and he glanced toward Sonny, who was still sprawled out on her own bed.

"Do you remember when you first came out to me?" He asked suddenly, his voice shaky.

Sonny snorted, covering her mouth at the memory. "Oh my God, how could I forget?" She shook her head and turned her phone off, giving Eli her full attention as she rolled over to face him. "It slipped. I didn't even mean to tell you."

Eli smiled at the memory. "Yeah, you were so casual about it. We were watching Harry Potter and you were like, 'I would totally be Luna's girlfriend.'" He laughed, glancing at her. "And then you froze like you'd just committed a crime."

Sonny groaned, burying her face in her hands. "Don't remind me! I thought I was doomed." She peeked at him through her fingers, grinning. "But then you just looked at me, shrugged, and said, 'Cool. Want to split a Pop-Tart?'"

Eli laughed softly, but there was a hint of nervousness in it. "I thought it'd make you feel normal, you know? Like it wasn't a big deal."

Sonny nodded, her smile softening. "It worked. I mean, I was so scared, but I was also... happy it was you who found out first. I knew you wouldn't judge me."

Eli looked down at his hands, twisting the blanket between his fingers. "That's good..." He said quietly. His knee bounced and Sonny tilted her head, catching the shift in his tone. She didn't say anything, but she knew something was up.

At first, Sonny thought Eli brought up the memory to lighten the mood, but not that she was seeing his demeanor shift, she wasn't so sure anymore. Why else would Eli bring up that moment?

He hesitated, the words catching in his throat. He finally took a deep breath, staring down at the crumpled blanket in his lap. "I've been thinking about that day a lot lately. What it was like for you... to say it out loud for the first time."

Sonny's face softened further as she sat up, watching him carefully.

"And I..." His voice wavered, and he took another deep breath, gripping the blanket tighter. "I've just been thinking about things. About who I am." The words come out quickly, tumbling over each other, and Eli immediately looked away, his chest heaving as if he's just run a mile.

Eli swallowed hard, his eyes still fixed downward. "I think– no. I know that I like guys."

Sonny didn't say anything right away. Instead, she pushed herself off her bed and crossed the small space between them. She sat beside him on his bed and bumped his shoulder with hers. "Hey..." She said gently. "It's okay. Thank you for telling me."

Eli let out a breath he didn't realize he was holding, his shoulders slumping with relief. "I was scared you'd think... I don't know. That it changes something." He muttered and Sonny shook her head. "Well, it doesn't."

When he looked at her with wide eyes, Sonny grinned. "You're still you, okay? Nothing's changing that." She said before her hand moved from around Eli's shoulder to ruffle his hair. "Not your hair, not your tattoos, and not your sexuality."

When Eli didn't answer, Sonny raised her eyebrows, leaning back slightly. "So that's why you didn't dance with Maria tonight?" She asked.

Eli shook his head, surprising her. "No." He said. "I'm bisexual." He clarified. The words come out softly, like he's testing how they sound in the air. His breath caught, and he glanced up at Sonny, waiting for her reaction.

Sonny nodded, and Eli let out a breathy laugh. "Sorry. I've never said it out loud before." He admitted, his voice small. Sonny nodded, moving to wrap her arm around his shoulder again. "And I'm really proud of you for doing it now. That's not easy."

Eli nodded slightly, his eyes trained ahead of them before they nervously moved to his twiddling thumbs. "There was... another reason I rejected Maria." He muttered.

Sonny raised an eyebrow, curious but not wanting to push Eli to say anything he didn't want.

Eli just looked up to Sonny and as soon as their eyes locked, Sonny sighed, realizing what Eli meant.

It was something the two of them had been able to do since they were eight. They could just read each other's thoughts with just a look. You really get to know someone you spend almost everyday of your life with.

"Demetri." Sonny muttered in realization.

Eli looked back down, as if he had just been caught. His hands trembled as he let out a shaky breath. "It's just...so hard with how mad he is at me right now..." His voice trailed off as tears well up in his eyes.

Sonny readjusted beside him again, scooting closer as she started to rub his arm. "Oh, Eli..." She murmured, resting her chin on his shoulder as she wrapped him in her arms.

The sound of her voice and the feeling of his best friends arms wrapping around him was his last straw. Eli leaned into her, the tears spilling over as he pressed his cheek into the side of her head. Sonny held him tighter as he cried.

"It's been so hard." Eli choked out. "He hardly looks at me. I miss him. I miss us—the way we used to be."

Sonny stroked his arm, her own throat tightening. "I know." She whispered. "I know it's hard, but you guys will get through this. You guys have been through too much not to be."

Eli nodded against her, the tension in his body slowly easing as her words sinked in. He felt safe in Sonny's arms, like he can finally let go of everything he's been holding inside for years.

"Thanks, Sonny." He murmured, his voice muffled but Sonny was still able to understand him.

"Of course." She whispered, tightening her hold on him. She moved her head to look at him, making Eli lift his head since he was leaning against her.

"How about a movie?" Sonny hummed and Eli slowly let himself smile, nodding his head.

Sonny smiled, moving back until she was leaning up against the headboard. Eli slowly followed her, grabbing the remote to their tv as he moved to sit beside her.

"Now, we just have to find something on this shitty tv." Sonny muttered, making Eli snicker as he started to flip through channels.
