Chapter one
' dawn's back '

★

"charlie!" the teacher in the classroom yelled, trying to get his attention, some students started to giggle, others were not paying attention, "you're up" the teacher said, charlie stood up, taking his notebook with him, turning it to the right page, some students heads turned towards him, others were writing something, and others were talking with their friends, not a lot of the kids in his class way paying attention, he recognized maya sitting there, she had quickly given him a thumps up, the two had gotten closer after dawn left, when they were together they felt like dawn was there, the two reminded each other of dawn.  

maya wispered a quick, "you got this", she wanted to wish her friend good luck, dawn and her would always encourage each other if they had a prestation, maya had missed her friend, the two kept close contact but over the few years the contact had stopped, charlie had stopped hanging out with his old friends and started having new friends, after charlie got new friends him and maya started hanging out, she would talk about charlie with dawn, but just as they started being friends, her and dawn stopped talking, dawn started getting busy, started getting more friends, she couldn't keep up with the new friends, homework, and sports, so she stopped calling every night. 

maya wasn't angry at her, she was happy for dawn that she could make new friends, she was though sad, she was sad she had lost such a good friend, "the nuc- no" charlie spoke up again, charlie flipped through his notebook, trying to find the right page, "well, my presentation isn't about any of these energy sources" charlie spoke, he slowly looked behind him, before speaking up again, "it's actually about a new one" charlie said, quickly doing his hand up, showing all the other energy sources before putting his arm down, "which happens to be the worlds greatest hero, the Guard" 

Maya dropped her head while his other friend, Berger slightly shook his head, "no." he mouthed to charlie, looking at Maya who was sitting across from him, she shrugged her shoulders, the teacher sighed, "charlie, how is this relevant?" the teacher said, looking up from her notes she was writing, "everybody is talking about how The Guard stopped that nuclear meltdown in India, right?or how he saved those kids in Taiwan, or stopped that yet from crashing in Brazil, but nobody's talking about how he did it" charlie spoke, trying to make his point, Berger looked to the side, he slightly exhaled as he looked, charlie continued talking about his presentation. 

"he's got some kind of new energy source, and it's not any of these..." charlie said, before trailing off as he heard the door open, dawn kenning walked inside the classroom, her hair was now shorter and she had bangs and her hair was now also shoulder length , her bag was hanging off her shoulders and on her face was a slight blush, she didn't even look at blonde boy, she more looked around the classroom, looking over at the teacher, "hi, uhm they said this is where i was supposed to be.." dawn said, pointing with her finger behind her, before pointing back inside the room, she had now closed the door, the teacher sighed as dawn walked further in the classroom, Charlie stood frozen in the front, he forgot how to speak, Maya's mouth stood open a little, she finally  had her friend back. 

dawn made eye contact with the familiar blonde, before quickly breaking the contact and sighing, walking closer to the teacher who had now stood up, "you must be Dawn Kenning?" the teacher asked her, looking down at the person who stood in front of her, dawn nodded her head, one hand held onto her bag, the other was hidden in the pocket of her jacket, "yes, that's me" Dawn said, confidently, "class, this is our new transfer student from London" the teacher, who was now sitting down, crossing her arms, "so please do not mock any strange customs that she..." the teacher was cut off by Charlie, he was trying to hide the blush that had started to appear on his face. 

"she used to go here." Charlie said, some people in the class started to whisper, Charlie didn't make eye contact with dawn, he still remembers their last encounter that they had, he was going to apologise the next day but he never could as she was then already gone, he accidentally let out a burp as he quickly covered his mouth, dawn's eyes shifted from one classmate to another, they still looked the same, they just grew up, "can i take a seat now?" dawn asked the teacher, she didn't look scared, she was confident as she saw everyone looking at her in shock,  "of course, miss Kenning, please take a seat." the teacher said, giving dawn her book. 

quickly grabbing it, dawn tried her best to ignore eye contact with Charlie, she still remembers their last encounter, she wasn't upset about it anymore, but for her she thought he still would think of her as 'freaky dawn.', dawn made eye contact with Maya, who was signalling for dawn to sit next to her, dawn gave Maya a quick smile before speed walking to her, she wanted the attention off her, "charlie, you can continue and please bring this back to the subject at hand." 

Charlie turned his head back to his friend Berger, now that dawn was sitting next to Maya, he couldn't really mouth anything to maya as dawn then would see it, 'what?' charlie slightly whispered to his friend, his eyes quickly went from his friend to dawn, Berger could only shrug as he also whispered back an 'i don't know', just as Charlie was going to continue with his story, the school bell started to ring, everyone in the room closed their notebooks, as people had already started to leave the room, dawn stood up, "test tomorrow" the teacher spoke up, the teacher didn't care if anyone had heard her, if they knew about the test or not, they were going to take the test. 

dawn grabbed her bag that she had dropped to her side, quickly stuffing her book in, she ran out the door, not noticing the eyes that were burning in her skull, she quickly got out a note that she received from the school council, there was a number written on it, meaning that, that number was her locker code, quickly looking for it, she opened her locker, stuffing her new book inside it,  before slamming her locker shut, a girl was waiting behind her, as dawn turned around she quickly jumped back when she saw the girl standing behind her, "dawn! you're back! the jacket you're wearing is so beautiful! where did you get it?" Lizzie asked, dawn looked down at her pink jacket, a quick smile came on her face as she looked back to the girl that had came up to her, "I know, sorry i didn't text you anything! " dawn said, the two had not stayed close after she left, but from maya, dawn knew lizzie and her were still friends, a smile started to grow on her face

dawn continued to talk, "and this" dawn said, her hands showing off her jacket, "i got it from my cousin, who lives in London, she told me to keep it, though she didn't mention where it was from, i'm sorry" dawn said, her smile slightly disappeared as she said the last bit, she could hear Lizzie sigh, before interlocking her arm with dawn's arm, this took dawn by surprise, but she didn't pull away, dawn noticed that they were walking to the outside, "where are we going?" dawn said, she slightly laughed, Lizzie looked at dawn before looking back in front of her, "you'll see!" she said, before walking a little faster than before.

"Berger! Berger! Berger!" Berger's parents yelled at him as he came on the field walking with Charlie, they were holding a 'WE ❤︎ BERGER' sign, Berger groaned as he saw his parents, "my parents are so embarrassing." he said to charlie, first looking at his parents than back to his friend, his parents continued to chant his name, "at least your dad shows up, mine's at a never-ending IT conference." Charlie spoke up, not noticing that his friend was not focusing on the ongoing conversation, but on the three familiar girls who were just sitting down, "hey, Maya, Lizzie with dawn, nine o'clock"

dawn sat down next to Maya, she was now seated in the middle of the two familiar girls, putting her bag to her side, she noticed Maya sitting there too "hey" she quickly said, before turning to Lizzie who had her phone out, confused dawn looked at the phone, "So, our elementary school  BFF just showed back up after like years of traveling the world, so jealous." Lizzie said, before lowering the phone, and turning to the familiar girl next to her, "what's you at?" she asked, "i left my phone in my locker" dawn replied, she was in such of a hurry before that she forgot her phone in her locker, "what?" lizzie answered to both of the girls, dawn shot her a smile, Maya just stared, "sorry" dawn said.

her smile turning into a side ways smile, lizzie's brows furrowed as she tried to think of something else to talk about, "okay, Well, what are your interests?" she asked, dawn looked back at the field, thinking about her answer, "uhm painting, lock picking, escape rooms and tree climbing!" dawn said, when she was out in london, she would take her time painting, or doing escape rooms, it was a way to keep her busy when her mom was working, lizzie just nodded while Maya was more invested on what was going on in the field, her and lizzie were still friends, just not as close as they were before, "okay" lizzie said, nodding her just a little, her head was slightly tilted to the side, next to Maya sat Liam Collins, the guy who had a crush on Maya in 5th grade. 

dawn looked at Maya, as she then noticed liam sitting there, "heyy, aren't you that guy who threw a ball against Maya's head to catch her attention?" dawn asked, she didn't mean to say that out loud, maya's eyes widend as liams attention was now not on the field but on the friends who were sitting next to each other, "uh i guess? but i apologised after you left." Liam answered, before turning his attention back to the field, so did dawn, and when she did she say the other team score another point,it was now '0-10", the guests were winning,  "Wow, this is a real blowout" a girl over the speaker said out loud, dawn could hear Maya groan, a big guy came on the field, flipping his baseball bat, "man, that's a big kid." a boy over the speaker said, mentioning to the kid who was standing in the field. 

"holy shit" dawn said, under her breath, not wanting anyone to hear her, "who is that?" Dawn asked the group, her eyes not leaving the person standing on the field, Lizzie was to busy with her phone to answer the question, "oh that's Forrest Deal" Maya answered her question, her eyes also not leaving the field, "they call him 'The Sequoia" Liam added on, his eyes were also trained on the field, the only one not paying attention to the field was Lizzie, "Now pitching is Charlie Kincaid" the boy over the speaker spoke, it was like both Maya and Liam shot up, Maya clapped her hands together while Liam was shouting, "go charlie!" Liam shouted, only once though, not wanting to embarrass charlie even more, the guy next to lizzie stopped eating for a second, "i heard he bullies his own parents" he said, after he said that he went on with eating what he was eating. 

the guy then again stopped eating as he saw that now the whole friend group was looking at him, "i heard his stare is so deadly, he can't even look himself in the mirror" the guy said again, before going back to what he was eating, dawn sighed before clapping her hands together, and so did Lizzie, "let's go charlie!" Lizzie said, shouting at the blonde who was standing in the field, "you got this charlie!"dawn shouted, she could see charlie freezing for a second before going back to his normal standing pose, Lizzie started to record, wanting to capture the game on her phone, the crowd started to cant charlie's name as they waited for him to throw the ball, as charlie threw the ball, forest hit the ball back harder, making it land into charlie's stomach. 

lizzie was then still recording, as liam was slightly holding in his laugh, as both dawn and maya had a worried look on their face, most of the people in the crowd started saying oh's, dawn could hear charlie groan, she knew that that ball hurt," that's going to leave a mark."the boy on the speaker said, Berger did off his helmet, looking over at his friend who was laying on the floor, "charlie!" Berger shouted, runinng towards his friend, "his mama gonna be mad" the person standing behind berger said, also doing off his helmet that he was wearing.

dawn was in her room, she was now onto her last box that she was still unboxing, the last item in the boy was laying there, a photo of her and maya when they were kids, lizzie was in some other photo's, but this photo was probably her favorite, it was the last photo taken since the day she left, she heard the doorbell go off, but dawn thought she was just imaging it, not going downstairs, she could hear her mother opening the door, and then she heard voices, as she folded the box, before putting it at the other box pile that she still had to do away, dawn could hear her mother yell her name. 

"coming! give me a second!" dawn yelled, hoping that her mother had heard her, before putting her hair in a ponytail as she started going downstairs, "i'm here.." dawn said, trailing off her sentence as she saw her two friends standing in the door opening, "dawn hi" lizzie said, waving at the girl who was standing there, "hey" maya said, only waving once before her hand went back to her side, "so berger said his parents left, so we wanted to know if you wanted to go to!" lizzie said,not telling the truth dawn, if she did, she knew dawn wouldn't come with them, her phone was in one of her hands, dawn looked at her mother, seeing as her mother nodded, she also nodded, "sure just let me put on some shoes." dawn said, almost running to where her shoes stood, putting them on as quick as she could, she also grabbed her phone that was charging on the kitchen table, running back to the door. 

"okay now you three be careful! be home by 10 okay?" her mother said, letting her daughter pass her, dawn stepped outside, turning back around nodding her head, "yes mom! love you!" dawn said, grabbing both lizzie and maya's hands, walking over to the car that was waiting for them, Berger's brother was picking them up and them driving them to where Berger and Liam wanted, dawn laughed as she heard his brother, Big Mac singing a song as they entered the car.
