Chapter Two
Beep. Beep. Beep...
Mara opened her eyes quickly, a bright light causing her to squint. "Why the fuck is it so bright?" Mara groaned, lifting her arm to cover her eyes. "Mara Zorl, don't you dare use such language!" A woman scolded the teen. Mara let out a strained laugh at the woman. "Yes, Ms. Cordial" Mara singsonged, turning her head to the brunette.
Ms Cordial rolled her eyes at the girl, her smirk hidden well. "How are you feeling Mara?" Rachel asked her, smiling softly. Mara looked around her, seeing countless machines beeping and showing random data. "This isn't a hospital, where am I?" Mara asked her caregiver, raising an eyebrow.
Rachel shook her head, laughing at Mara's blunt tone. "A special hospital for people like us" She told the girl. There was no point hiding the truth from her. "You mean aliens" Mara corrected, sitting up in the medical bed.
Rachel was quick to help Mara, fixing the pillows behind her and softly laying her back. "I'm not helpless" Mara groaned. "Do you remember what happened?" Rachel asked her. "Just that when I see Lillian Luthor again I will beat the sh-"
"Mara Zorl! Language" Rachel scolded the girl. Mara quickly shut her mouth, scared to anger Rachel. The door opened from Rachel's side of the room, and a woman with short, dark red hair walked in with a tablet in hand. "Mara, you're awake. I'm Agent Danvers" The woman introduced herself, smiling up from her device.
Mara held her hand out, "Nice to meet you, Agent Danvers" She smiled as Danvers shook her hand. "As you must be aware, you are at a top-secret facility to tend to extraterrestrial beings and or imprison them for crimes against the globe" Danvers explained to the teenager. Mara only nodded at Danvers, nodding along to her words.
"You must not tell anyone of this location or our operations, copy" Danvers ordered her. "Copy Agent Danvers" Mara reassured the woman. Danvers nodded before looking back down at her tablet. "Do you remember what happened?" Danvers asked the young girl.
"I was called to the principal's office, but when I got there I was taken by a woman" Mara began, remembering vividly what had happened. "Did you get the woman's name?" Rachel asked. "Lillian Luthor. She injected me with this glowing green liquid at the warehouse. She said I was Kryptonian" Mara answered, looking at both her guardian and the agent.
Danvers nodded before putting the tablet down on a metal tray. "Mara, Lillian Luthor injected you with liquid kryptonite. We've also analysed the pod you came to Earth in and it's almost a carbon copy of the pods that Superman and Supergirl arrived in. You are one of the last Kryptonians in the galaxy" Danvers explained gently to Mara.
"That's impossible! I can't be from Krypton, I only have slightly increased strength, not laser eyes or freeze breath" Mara exclaimed, disbelief written all over her face. " Mara calm down" Rachel soothed the teen, placing her hand on her shoulder.
Danvers watched as Rachel's palm glowed a light green, calming Mara down. "Sorry, Ms. Cordial" Mara muttered, looking down at her legs. "It's alright Mara" Rachel said, rubbing her shoulder softly. "We don't know what the Kryptonite has done to your immune system so you'll need to stay for testing" Danvers proceeded to finish before the glass door opened once more.
"Al- Agent Danvers, Director Henshaw wishes to see you" The Girl of Steel called, her eyes ghosting over Mara. "Of course Supergirl" Danvers responded, walking over to the exit. "Can you watch over Ms Zorl while I'm gone?" Danvers asked her. "No problem" Supergirl responded before Danvers left the room.
Mara stared at Supergirl. Was this real? Is she really in the same room as Supergirl!? "Hi! It's lovely to meet you" Supergirl greeted Mara and Rachel, smiling brightly. "Supergirl, it's an honour to meet National City's Girl of Steel" Rachel smiled at the hero.
Supergirl blushed at the comment, mumbling a sweet thank you. "Where are you guys from? City wise" Supergirl asked the pair. "I run a group home in Midvale, Mara is one of my little gremlins" Rachel answered, nudging the teen girl. Mara groaned at her. "Ms Cordial!" She cried at the woman, her face going red.
Supergirl looked at Mara with her eyebrow raised. "We found out I had powers after I ate some leftover dinner after midnight. My handprint is still on the fridge door" Mara explained, grimacing at the memory.
Supergirl did her best not to laugh. "You can laugh, it's funny" Mara smiled at her, laughing along with Supergirl. "How are you feeling after the kryptonite? I know it's not the best feeling" Supergirl smiled softly at Mara.
"I'm okay, I feel drained though" Mara answered, her voice sounding strained. "That's normal, don't worry once you go out into the sun you'll be fine" Supergirl reassured the girl, rubbing her shoulder gently.

Mara watched from her hospital room as Ms Cordial talked with Agent Danvers and who she assumed to be Director Henshaw. Supergirl left to save a burning lab leaving Mara to wander the room on her own. She changed into a new set of clothes, seeing as her old ones were covered in dust.
She played with the strings on her hoodie, her eyes scanning over the people working away to keep her home safe. She wished she could hear what her guardian was saying. Ms Cordial seemed to be arguing with the pair, Mara noticed her eyes glowing a soft blue.
Mara felt a sharp whistle sound, feeling her ears go on fire. She held her hands over her ears, the beeping of the machines behind her getting louder and louder. Mara winced in pain, the feeling as if someone was hitting her over and over with an orchestra.
"Make it stop!" Mara shouted, falling to her knees. Her tears fell to the floor, echoing louder and louder with each fall. She kept crying and shouting, not being able to hear her own voice.
She could hear the people around her, rushing to get her and Director Henshaw ordered someone to get Supergirl. Mara felt someone wrap their arms around her. Rubbing her shoulder soothingly as Mara took deep breaths.
A large gust of wind caused Mara to open her eyes. Her green eyes met Supergirl's blue ones, reminding her of the ocean. Supergirl knelt to Mara's level, a wave of maternal love washing over Mara. Supergirl held the teen close to her chest, whispering in a familiar language.
Supergirl placed her own hands over Mara's ears, lifting her head to meet her own. "It's okay, it's okay you're safe" Supergirl whispered softly. Mara doves into her chest again, scared to let go of the hero.
Supergirl lifted Mara in her arms, whispering in the familiar language again as she walked away. Mara felt her head spinning, the noises becoming quieter the longer they walked.
Soon enough the pain ceased and the noises became quieter. Supergirl placed her on a small bed, sitting next to her. "What is this place?" Mara asked, looking around at the dull grey walls. "It's a safe room, kinda. It stops all sounds from coming in" Supergirl explained.
Mara looked at the ground, shuffling her shoes against the hard floor. "I know it's hard, when I first came to earth, I had zero control over my powers" Supergirl told her, laughing at her past misfortunes. "Really?" Mara asked, looking up from the floor.
Supergirl nodded, "I kept seeing people's skeletons and hearing everything at once. One time I accidentally shot a laser beam at my sister" Supergirl giggled. Mara giggled as well.
'Supergirl there's an alien attack downtown'
Supergirl gave Mara a quick squeeze before she was gone with a gush of wind. Mara looked at the spot where Supergirl was, a longing pain in her chest. There was something about the language Supergirl spoke that made her feel a weird warmth in her.
Supergirl landed in the DEO, greeted by Alex and J'onn. "What's wrong?" She asked, her mind jumping to Mara. Did something happen when she was gone? Did she get hurt? "Mara is fine, she's talking to Rachel" Alex reassured her, noticing her sister's worry. "It's actually about the necklace Mara wears" Alex explained, leading her sister to her lab.
The necklace was an unfiled rock wrapped in black string. The rock kept shifting colours. "It's a raogrhys crystal" Supergirl exclaimed, looking at it more closely. "What is that exactly?" Alex asked, having zero knowledge about the crystal. "It stores up energy and practically any type of power source. My Father gave me one when I was..." Supergirl trailed off, a dark feeling emitting throughout the room.
"Kara, no one will judge you" J'onn told the hero, placing a hand on her shoulder. "I know" She whispered, smiling sadly at the Martian.
~~~
Mara waited patiently for Supergirl, getting anxious every moment or so. "Hey Kar- Who are you and where is Kar- Supergirl" A man walked in. He looked at Mara strangely, almost like she was a criminal.
"Mara. You?" The girl asked back, raising an eyebrow. "Mo-Mike, my name is Mike" The man said unconvincingly. Mara crossed her arms, looking at him suspiciously. Mike, if that was his real name, copied her, trying to be more intimidating.
"What alien race are you? Mike" Mara asked, emphasizing on his name. "Daxamite. You?" Mike copied her previous question and tone. "Kryptonian apparently" Mara sighed, slumping her body.
Mike looked at her concerned. "Why are you upset then? Supergirl is Kryptonian and she's awesome" He said, sitting next to Mara. "I'm upset because if I am then... I'll never find my parents or even know who they are. Supergirl and Superman are the only Kryptonians left. I doubt they would have known about my family" Mara explained to him.
She was never one to hide her emotions or thoughts. Mara didn't care if this Mike was going to kill her or just some stranger who worked in the DEO, she needed to talk before she exploded like last time. "I'm new here on Earth, I don't understand much but I do understand missing family even when I didn't know them" Mike started.
"Even if you never meet your parents, they'll always be with you. Right here" Mike pointed at his heart, smiling softly at her. Mara smiled back at him. "Thanks, Mike" Mara said, feeling the weight lift off her shoulders.
Supergirl walked into the room, shocked to see Mon-El and Mare together. "Mara! I see you've met Mo-Mike" Supergirl corrected herself quickly seeing Mon-El look at her crazily. "Yeah, we were just talking. Did you win?" Mara asked, changing the subject to why Supergirl left earlier.
Supergirl smiled at the younger teen. "I did, some citizens still think bullets will work" Supergirl told her, still fazed by the stupidity of some of her foes. "Some people and aliens have very small minds" Mara said, picking at her nail beds. "True. Anyways Hank and Rachel want to see you" Supergirl told the teen, getting back to why she came back to the room.
Mon-El stood up first. "Well, I'll let you two do that while I get to work. See you around kid" Mon-El bidding his farewell before leaving the girls. "Bye Mike" Mara bidded, standing up.
~~~
"Mar-Mar!" Henry exclaimed, hugging his surrogate sister tightly. Mara returned the hug, "You swore I fell off the face of the earth, huh Henry" Mara chuckled. Henry took a step back, holding Mara in front of him. "Don't you ever scare me again... unless you find a cutie so make sure you find out if there's a hottie brother?" Henry told her in a very serious tone.
Mara slapped his arms. "Shut your fucking mouth Henry I was kidnapped by anti-alien idiots not Zendaya" Mara scolded him, slapping up his head. Henry only smiled at her. "Looks like nothing has changed with your temper" Henry commented, nudging her side with his elbow.
"Scrawny little bastard" Mara cursed at him. "Tiny little shit" Henry shot back. "Mara Zorl and Henry Brookes watch your language" Ms Cordial scolded the pair. "Yes, Ms. Cordial" The two sang in harmony, causing the woman to sigh deeply.
Mara and Henry shared a look before Supergirl and Alex re-entered the room with Hank in tow. "Why don't we sit down before we start this conversation" Hank held his hand out to the conference room behind the two teens.
"What did she do? Look at secret files" Henry jokes, earning one last hit from Mara. "Well, it's more about Mara's safety" Alex began handing the teen her necklace. Mara sighed in relief, holding it close. It was her only connection to her family and what stopped her from doing some batshit crazy things.
Hank stood up, giving Rachel a file. She opened it discreetly before closing it again quickly. "What does CADMUS want with Mara?" Rachel demanded, sliding the file back at Hank. "We do not know at this time. Which is why we want Mara to stay in DEO custody until it is safe for her to return to Midvale" Hank proposed, folding his hands.
Henry huffed, glaring at the director. "You are not keeping Mar locked up in this place" He growled. Mara kicked him under the table. "Not now bro" Mara warned him, taking his hand. "For how long?" Mara asked them. "Until you're safe Mara" Supergirl told her with kind eyes.
Rachel pinched the bridge of her nose. "What about school, her attendance is vital for graduation" Rachel pointed out, knowing how much Mara wanted to leave the school. "An exemption can be made with an online presence" Hank negotiated, but he knew there would be another problem. "I am not letting my sister stay here!" Henry exclaimed, punching the table.
Mara grabbed his hand and pulled him back. "Henry, listen to me. This isn't like that. No one's gonna hurt me here" Mara calmed him, making him look at her. Henry didn't respond. The two began a silent conversation leaving the adults clueless. Soon enough Henry calmed down and held Mara close.
"Promise?" He asked. "Always" Mara smiled.
