Chapter Four

Mara hummed as she cleaned up her small room. It was a little late but Mara couldn't sleep. She was so excited for tomorrow. She was spending the day with Kara in Cat Co. She knew that Kara would be busy but Mara didn't care. "You should be asleep" Supergirl spoke, Mara turned around with a happy smile.

"Can't sleep I'm way too excited" Mara beamed, fixing her stacks of books. "What's tomorrow?" Supergirl asked coyly, her own excitement bubbling. "I'm spending the day with Alex's sister, Kara" Mara told her, sitting on her bed. Supergirl pretended to act surprised. "Really? I've only met her in passing, what's she like?" the hero pried, a little curious of what the teen thought of her outside of the suit.

Ever since Alex confirmed that Mara was Mar-El, Kara had been dying to tell Mara everything. But J'onn and Alex had advised her to take it slow, the first step was allowing Mara to stay with Kara and build their relationship before revealing the big 'your mother is Supergirl' and also the woman you're gonna staying with. If today goes well.

"She's amazing! Not only is she a reporter at Cat Co. but she's also from Midvale like me. She's so sweet and kind! I... I feel safe around her. There's this aura I get when I'm around her it reminds me of...you" Mara told the older Kryptonian as her eyes lit up a vivid yellow. "Kara reminds you of me?" Supergirl asked, a little worried that Mara might know her identity.

Mara shrugged. "You make me feel...normal like I've always had my powers, that makes me feel safe and Kara does the same and it's nice that I don't have to hide my powers around her and that's nice" Mara explained before yawning. Supergirl rolled her eyes playfully, walking over to Mara's bed.

She grabbed the cover, pulling them over Mara who lifted her legs up. "You should rest so you're not late tomorrow and when you get back, you can tell me all about your day with Kara" Supergirl smiled, pushing some hair back behind Mara's ear. "G'Night Supergirl" Mara yawned as she closed her eyes. "Good night inah" Supergirl whispered, turning off the light in the room and leaving her daughter to sleep. Her daughter. That felt right.

J'onn stopped his car outside the Cat Co building, where Kara was waiting with anticipation. Mara almost jumped out the car window as J'onn unlocked the car doors. Mara ran up to Kara, hugging her tightly. "Oh I've missed you sweetie" Kara squealed, hugging Mara back. "Me too" Mara smiled before J'onn cleared his throat.

The two blondes turned to the DEO director. "I am sure you will be safe in the hands of Ms Danvers. Please behave, no messing with the monitors like you and Mr Schott did last weekend" J'onn warned Mara. The young girl snickered as she remembered how she and Winn played video games on a bunch of monitors she hacked. "Promise" Mara told him with a stern tone. J'onn gave Kara a nod before entering his car and leaving.

"Come one, I'll show you my little office" Kara smiled, leading Mara inside the building. As they reached the floor Kara worked on, Mara looked at everything in wonder. It was so lively in Cat Co. All the art was beautiful and the photography made Mara squeal. "You are so lucky you get to work in such a beautiful place" Mara gushed as Kara stopped by an office that had no walls, only panes of glass. Mara walked in to see a blonde with a permanent scowl on her face. "Is that Cat Grant?" Mara asked, seeing the steam practically leave the woman's ears. Kara kissed her teeth, and gently guided Mara away. "You can meet Ms Grant another time" She gulped as Cat screamed for her assistant. "Good choice" Mara winced as they passed a scared woman.

Kara opened the door to her office. While she's usually near Snapper's office at the communal desks, her own little office is very plain. There's a picture of Clark James gave her hung on a wall and a few photos. "So you have an office and a desk? Cool" Mara smiled as Kara opened up the desktop. "Look I know you came to hang out but I have a little work to do first. But I was thinking we should go to Noonans for lunch" Kara suggested, allowing Mara to sit in her chair.

"That's okay, I'm working on a little project before helping Henry with Calculus" Mara reassured Kara who hugged the girl. "You truly are the best. Call me if you need me, okay" Kara made sure Mara was okay. "Go before I call Alex!" Mara laughed before Kara left with a fresh story on hand.

Mara opened her bag, taking out a bunch of papers and metal pieces. "Let's do this" Mara started, looking at her papers and putting the pieces together.

"Sis slow down you're confusing me" Henry spoke over the video call. Mara rolled her eyes at her brother. "All I asked was how you solved the question" Mara reminded him only for Henry to freeze. "Fake freezing doesn't work on me" She sings. Henry dropped his facade, huffing in defeat. "You and your supersense" Henry glared at her through the screen. "Not supersense, I just know my big brother" Mara smirked before a knock caught her attention.

Alex walked in, her eyes scanning the room with concern. "Hey, Alex!" Mara greeted her. Alex didn't even notice the young blonde. "Have you seen Kara?" Alex asked her, hands on her hips in her worried stance. Mara's eyes flashed bright orange, "No, not since lunch. She went to investigate a story with Mike" Mara told her which only worried Alex more. "Okay, pack your things we need to go" Alex told her, throwing her the bag she had with her. Mara was fast to hang up on Henry, who protested highly at the action. "Where's Kara, should we get Supergirl?" Mara asked Alex, her eyes now a vivid yellow.

Alex bit back her lip, she had to lie to Kara's daughter, her niece about her own mother being Supergirl. "No one can contact Supergirl, Mara. I think they went missing together" Alex told Mara. It was the first time she's ever felt guilty about lying for Kara in a very long time. Mara eyes flashed a darker orange, furrowing her eyebrows at Alex.

"Are you sure? Supergirl could be anywhere Alex" Mara tried to explain to Alex, but mostly herself. Alex walked over to Mara, grasping her shoulders. "When I first started working with Supergirl, I had a special bracelet made so if Kara ever got into bad trouble, she could call Supergirl" Alex explained to her, the lie feeling like a burn on her tongue. That's when Mara's eyes turned back to normal. "She called Supergirl" Mara took a sharp breath, feeling her stomach drop.

Mara had ran to her room at the DEO, throwing her bag onto the bed. She heard the metal clank and cursed at herself. She forgot about her project, Mara opened the bag and checked on it. Once she saw zero broken pieces she ran back to the main computers. Deciding the shortcut through the locker room would be the best fit.

"You know, I almost got killed!" Someone exclaimed. "Winn?" Mara whispered to herself, that explained the sunglasses. "Winn, everybody gets their ass kicked" Mara didn't know who was talking this time. "Just stop" Winn spoke back to the person. Mara stayed behind the lockers separating them, her eyes flashing bright orange as her curiosity peaked.

"Winn, let me help..." the person pleaded with Winn. " Just stop! I'm good here, maybe. Or you know, at a desk, but I can't go out there with you again. I can't, all right?" Win cut the person off, his voice sounding depleted. "Just stop. I can't. I quit" Winn told them, slamming his locker shut.

"Hey, am I... Am I interrupting something?" Alex's voice spoke urgently, unaware of the conversation she walked in upon. "No, no, we're good. Just um..." the person trailed off. "What's up?" Winn asked Alex awkwardly. "Have either of you heard from Kara? She's not answering her phone" Alex told them. "Isn't she supposed to be on a story?" The mystery person mentioned the same Mara had done. "Yeah, missing persons" Winn agreed. "Okay, just text me the details, Mara let's go" Alex called out.

Mara sheepishly walked out from behind the lockers, waving at Winn and the man she didn't know. "Hi Winn" She smiled before following Alex out. James looked at Winn, "Is that?" He asked. Winn gulped, nodding at the question "She definitely knows".

~~~
Mara stood by the computers with Winn, Alex and J'onn as a team looked at Kara and Supergirl's last known location. "Are you seeing this?" the agent called from the feed as a bridge looking formation. "What is that?" Mara asked, crossing her arms. "I've never seen anything like that" Alex commented beside the young Kryptonian. "I have" J'onn spoke in a dark tone, making Winn wince. "Oh, no. I know that tone. That's a bad news tone" He pointed out as J'onn turned the face the trio. "It's a transmatter portal. A way to travel instantly between worlds" J'onn explained.
"Oh, my God! It's Stargate" Winn and Mara exclaimed, one with a smile the other with a worried look. "Wait, does that mean that..." Alex trialed off, no wanting to scare Mara. "Kara's not on Earth" J'onn finished, looking at Mara who made a 'oh' face. "And neither is Supergirl. We need to find them" Mara stated, grabbing a chair and quicky tapping on a computer. "Hey, what are you doing!" Winn whined, seeing the girl override his computer.
"Ms Cordial taught us about these things. Get an agent to sent me the co-ordinates on the control console. I'm finding Kara and Supergirl, so get translating the star maps to a language I can understand" Mara ordered Winn. J'onn and Alex shared a look as their tech genius was stunned before shrugging at them. "You heard her, get those co-ordinates Agents" J'onn followed Mara's lead, seeing the triumphant smile on her face.
"Have you found the Transmat's terminus?" J'on asked after a while. Mara turned in her chair, pointing to a screen, "Yeah, ionization trail leads to the Arcturus system, planet 51, arc B" She told the martian. J'onn patted her shoulder, proud of the young girl's work. "That's Maaldoria. The heart of the intergalactic slave trade" J'onn told them, crossing his arms. "That's bad" Alex commented only for J'onn to give her a warning look. "I'm afraid it gets worse" He told her, making everyone on edge. "Define worse" Mara stood up, holding on to the back of her chair.
J'onn took a deep breath, "Arcturus is a red sun". Mara was confused. "Red sun?" She asked. Alex looked back at her. "Krypton had a red sun, it effects Kryptonians like it does with humans" she explained to Mara. "So Supergirl won't have any of her powers?" Mara eyes turned yellow as she spoke, the colour not changing. "I should have gone with her. Why didn't I go with her?" Alex began to ramble, unaware of the panicking teenager beside her.
"You didn't know this was gonna happen, Alex" Winn tried ot calm her down. "Hey, we have the Martian Manhunter, right?" Winn brought up with a half assed smile. "He doesn't need a yellow sun. He'll go in there, and he'll get her, and everything be okay" Winn jumped tot he conclusion only for J'onn's face to ruin the faux hope
"I can't join this rescue mission" He told them. "Exactly. Wait, what?" Winn took a double take at the martian. "The air on Maaldoria is toxic to Martians. Some kind of silicate in the atmosphere. I can't help Kara and Supergirl, I'm sorry" J'onn sighed before noticing the lack of fear from Mara.
"I have an idea" Mara smiled.
~~~

Mara laid out her plans and the metal device she was working on. "What is this?" Alex asked holding the metal sphere. "Careful, it's super fragile" Mara warned Alex, taking the sphere out of her hands. "Is this a radiation container made of synthetic steel?" Winn asked, eyeing the sphere in Mara's hand. "Yep, I'm hoping it can harness enough energy to maybe give Supergirl a boost" Mara told him, showing him her plans.

"You need an power source strong enough to withstand any energy stronger than the sun" Winn told her, thinking out loud. "You want to harness the properties of the yellow sun?" J'onn asked Mara. "You said it yourself, Supergirl has no powers. If I can make this work even for a moment, it's worth a try" Mara told J'onn, giving him the same look Kara gave him when she convinced him to allow her to stay.

Like mother, like daughter

"Winn, assist Mara in one of the labs in making this..." Jonn questioned the name of the device. "Yellow Sun Bomb" Mara helped him. J'onn nodded before tasking Alex in getting a SWAT team together.

~~~
Mara's eyes glowed a dark purple as she stood before the portal. Alex and Winn had already gone through with a SWAT team. Her nerves were getting the best of her as she nervously leaned against the wall.
It had been an hour when J'onn noticed the glowing getting brighter. "Mara" He called out. Mara looked up at him her eyes shifting bright orange slightly. "Come with me". Mara followed him to the fake waiting room in the building. "Sit" He gestured to the chairs. Mara fell into the chair, curling her knees up against her chest.
"Your yellow sun bomb was genius. You are gonna be the reason Supergirl and Kara get home" J'onn commented. Mara nodded slowly, "Doesn't feel like it. Sitting in this room is worse than family day" Mara bit back, any noise she heard making her jump. "You're worried about Kara and Supergirl" J'onn stated. Mara rolled her eyes, "I'm more worried that the sun bomb won't work" she muttered.
J'onn placed his hand on her shoulder. "My father once told me, if you focus on what will go wrong you will never be able to focus on what goes right. "I know you're worried but I promise you, they are coming back no matter what" J'onn told her.
Mara's eyes began to flood into a light blue as she wrapped her arms around J'onn, hugging him tightly. The martian was taken back by the teen. He carefully patted her back until Mara broke the hug. "Sorry I just...I need a hug" Mara apologised, wiping away the tears that fell from her eyes. "It's alright, just give me a warning next time" J'onn smiled at her before the sound of the transmatter portal opening.
"Stay here, we don't know what's coming to greet us" J'onn told Mara, running out of the fake waiting room.
Mara couldn't bare the silence until rounds of applause echoed back. She felt a weight lift as the door opened. "Mara!" Supergirl cried, running up to the teen. Mara hugged the hero with everything she had, crying as her eyes turned light pink. "Don't cry little one, it's okay I'm here...your sun bomb brought me home" Supergirl whispered to her, hugging her just as tight. "What about Kara...Is she okay?" Mara asked the older kryptonian.
"Ms Danvers is fine, she'll need to return to the DEO for an precautional check up before returning to her everyday life" J'onn spoke from behind Supergirl. "Come on, let's get you back too. I need to know how you came up with your sun bomb" Supergirl smiled, wrapping an arm around Mara as they walked out of the building.
Both aliens unaware of the soft smile on J'onn's face.
~~~

Mara sat on her bed, toying with the alien gun Alex snagged from Maaldoria. She was trying to figure out it's power source and how sustainable it was. "Mara?" Kara called out, seeing the teen in deep thought. She walked up and tapped her shoulder. Mara jumped her eyes flashing yellow briefly.

She looked back at Kara, hand over her heart. "Kara, you gave me a heart attack" Mara smiled as her eyes turned pink seeing the reporter. Kara shook her head with a smile as she fixed her glasses. "Sorry, I'm just excited" She gushed, fiddling gently with a small box in her hands.

Mara's eyes changed to bright orange as she noticed the box. "What happened? You get a promotion?" Mara asked her, tilting her head. "No, something better actually" Kara answered her, handing her the box. She nudge her head to open it. Mara opened the lid, her eyes turning grey. "A key?" She questioned Kara.

"Director Henshaw has allowed you to stay with me, until CADMUS has been dealt with" Kara explained to Mara who's eyes turned pink once more. "If that's what you want?" Kara asked her. Mara jumped into Kara's arms, squealing with delight. "Of course I do!" She smiled brightly. Kara hugged her back the smile on her face brighter than ever before.

~~~
The moon shined brightly in Mara's room, a book in her hands as she head her phone as a flashlight.
"You should be asleep"
Mara smiled, closing her book. "Hi Supergirl" Mara looked up at her. Supergirl had hand on her hips, looking a little disappointed that the young girl was up at this hour. "What are you doing up at this hour?" Supergirl raised her eyebrow. "I could ask you the same" Mara smirked at her.
Supergirl shook her head with a smile, fixing her hair. "Kara does the same thing with her glasses" Mara pointed out, making Supergirl look at her in surprise. "Really? Odd" She laughed off awkwardly. "I'm gonna be staying with Kara for now. I'm gonna miss our late night chats" Mara eyes turned a vivid blue, kissing her teeth.
"We can still have out late night chats. I'll visit" Supergirl smiled, bumping Mara's shoulder. Mara smiled, her eyes turning back to the normal blue as she yawned. Supergirl smiled fondly. It always ended like this. They'd talk for a few minutes before exhaustion would creep up on Mara.
She leaned her head on Supergirl's shoulder, her eyes closed. "I'm happy you're home" Mara spoke softly, humming gently. Supergirl kissed her head as she heard the quiet snores coming from Mara.
