Even Angels Fall

Even Angels Fall

I gave the rebel yell as I leaped into the air alongside Zuriel, the shrill sound echoing throughout the battlefield.
I struck the closest person to me, bringing my heavy gun down on their head, which cracked the guys skull. I moved on, laying rapid fire on a group of charging soldiers. Zuriel joined me and when they were mostly gone one of our snipers took the last two out. A lot of soldiers were falling, and we were winning, but not without any casualties.
The battle, a short one, was just coming to a close when I was shot down.
When everyone saw my white wings soak with crimson blood as I plummeted to the ground, everything went silent.
NOOOOOOOOO!!! Reuben and Zuriel screamed at the same time. Zuriel dived straight down, catching me before we reached the ground and descending slowly. As we set down in front of Reuben, I let out a few short breaths.
Reuben, I said, wincing as I coughed up blood. Listen to me. I need you to share color. When I die, the color will die with me unless you spread it, okay?
But you're not gonna die! Reuben insisted, his eyes desperate. Zuriel glanced up at him as he tended to my injuries.
She's not going to make it, Reuben, he said flatly.
Reuben glared at the dark angel as Lark ran up and put a hand on my forehead.
Don't worry hun, she said. It'll only hurt for a little while.
When I found the strength to nod, she let go and wrapped her arms around Reuben's shoulders with a sad smile.
It's not okay, but we can make it okay, she whispered. Spread the color, Reuben. Spread the color.
He nodded a tiny bit, turning back to me as my breathing got faster.
Zuriel pulled out his knife.
In the same moment I took my last breath he took a deep breath and drove the knife into his chest, dropping to the ground beside me.
And then the world slipped away, and I was gone.

>Zuriels P.O.V.<

I rose from my body, relieved to be back in my normal form. Reuben watched as I pulled Ruthie from her body, and I nodded to him and Lark before floating upwards, Ruthie's glimmering trail a beacon in the gathering storm clouds of war.
