Chapter 6
*First person pov*
For the rest of the day, we were just walking around town, fooling around and having fun. It was getting dark out. We walked back to the dorms calling it a day. Death City is pretty, in it's own way. Although it doesn't from the outside looking in, it's kinda artistic. The city's layout is confusing, but again, in a artistic way. I like it, plus, it's beautiful in the night.
"Umm... May?" I called, and she hummed in response. "You go on ahead, I'm gonna go on a errand, okay?" I told her, and she looked at me skeptically. "You don't even know your way around Death City, what do you mean 'errands'?" May asked, putting her hands on her hips. "Well by errands... I'm just gonna keep strolling. Just to explore the city." I lied through my teeth as I rubbed the back of my head. "Well... Okay. But you better come back before 8:00." May said, then turning on her heels to go back to the dorms.
I sighed in relief then started walking towards the Hoshibucks. I walked inside, too see Sam putting her apron up and a few people in the cafe. "My shift's over! I'm going!" Sam called to whoever, and the person in the kitchen replied back with an 'okay'. "Sam-san." I called, and Sam turned around to see me with a surprised look on her face. "Can... Can I have a moment?" I asked Sam, and she paused. "Sure, why not. I have nothing else to do." Sam said, smiling as she lead me over to a chair and table next to the windows. "So, what did you want to know?" Sam asked, as she sat down. I swallowed nervously. "Who... Who is Saki?" I asked Sam.
Sam ceased smiling, and looked down. "Saki... Saki was a friend of mine. She attended DWMA and she was Maylin's meister as she was Saki's weapon. They were two peas in a pod. But just only 1 year ago... Saki and Maylin were doing some extra lessons, just to hunt some Kishin egg." Sam closed her eyes in remembrance.
"But... Saki had an accident and was killed right then and there. Saki's death... made a huge impact on all of us. But mostly Maylin.... I believe she is now over the death... But I haven't seen her make a really move on." Sam looked at me seriously. "Mitsuki, you act so much like Saki... I think it's helping her move on. But I don't know for sure. Please, as her friend, I am begging you, please help Maylin... I don't think I have what it takes to help Maylin." Sam said, and I nodded, clutching the bag with the two necklaces inside.
"I will, Sam-san. I promise you I will help Maylin through this." I said, and Sam nodded and smiled. "Sam is just fine, forget the -san." Sam said, then grabbing her bag and slung it over her shoulder. "It's late for me... My boyfriend must be mad because I'm late... Oh well. See you later, Mitsuki." Sam said, waving as she walked out the door. I got up from my seat after a moment then headed out myself. Am... am I really like this Saki girl? I wonder... I wonder what she was like.
I finally got to the dorms and walked inside. I climbed up all the long steps to Maylin's and I's room. I grabbed my key and unlocked the door. I opened it to see Maylin hunched over her desk, her nose buried in a book. Maylin noticed me coming and set down her book to look at me. "Welcome back Mit. How was your stroll?" Maylin asked, and I noticed something sitting on top her nose.
"Are... Are those reading glasses?" I asked, and Maylin then panicked as she snatched off her face and held it behind her back. "N-NO! You're going crazy, ahahaha! Pfft, reading glasses are for old people!" Maylin said, laughing nervously, and I smiled at her.
"You don't have to hide it, I won't judge you." I said, then sitting down on my bed. I grabbed my suitcase and started unpacking, since I never got the chance to. As I finished putting my clothes in the shared wardrobe, I called over to May. "Hey May..." I called, and she hummed. "I heard... I heard about Saki." I said, and she turned to me. "...Who told you?" May asked me a angered expression on her face. "May, I just asked around, and I'm not naming any names. I wanted to know because I heard your conversation with this 'Sid' guy. Please, just talk to me. I know we haven't even known each other for 2 days, but in that 2 days, I got close to you. I care for you." I said, and May looked down.
"And so does everyone else. You don't have to tell me anything about Saki yet, I want to be able to get even closer to you before you can spill out your feelings. I don't feel like I'm in the right place in your heart yet. But I don't want to see your hard work to getting into EAT class go to waste. May, I know that you know what I'm talking about.... and I feel that connection with you. Please... please be my weapon." I said, then May looks down, her face shaded by her neatly cut bangs.
"I don't think I'll feel this connection with any other person." I begged, and she didn't answer. I almost forgot the best friend necklaces and I pulled it out. "H-Here May! When I was in the store, I got these best friend necklaces!" I said, then slipping on the necklace that said 'best' around my neck. I'm so afraid of being rejected. "Th-They are mood necklaces, but they don't tell you yours! It tells you the feelings of your best friend, so you can feel closer together!" I said, then holding out the bag that held the other half of the yin yang necklace.
The 'friend' part of the necklace. "H-Here! So ple-"
I was cut off when here was a burning sensation on my hand... May slapped the bag out of my hand and the bag fell to the ground under the bed so that a part was slightly poking out. "What are you talking about... What do you know about me!? You know nothing!!! You don't know what happened!! Saki... Saki's death was all my fault!! You don't know the burden when you know the fault of the death was you!!" May shouts, tears streaming down her face. "May-"
"SHUT UP!! YOU DON'T KNOW ANYTHING!! DON'T ACT LIKE YOU KNOW HOW I FEEL!!! YOU'RE LIKE EVERYONE ELSE!! THEY TRY TO CONNECT WITH ME, BUT REALITY, THEY CAN'T!! BECAUSE THEY NEVER GOT SOMEONE CLOSE TO THEM KILLED!!" May yelled, and I reached my hand out to her.
"That's not tru-" "IT IS!!! I HATE YOU!!!! HOW YOU CAN BE SO OPTIMISTIC!!! JUST GO AND DIE!!! I WOULDN'T EVEN CARE IF YOU DID OR NOT!!! I DON'T EVEN KNOW YOU!!! SO IT WOULDN'T MATTER TO ME, OR ANYONE ELSE IN DEATH CITY!! JUST GO BACK HOME IN JAPAN!! YOU'LL JUST DIE ON YOUR FIRST MISSION!!" May yelled, and my heart stopped beating... like there was a thorn in my heart that just stopped it from beating.
"I-I see..." I mumbled, feeling tears build up in my eyes. "TH-THEN MAY IS AN IDIOT!!" I yelled as tears streamed down my face then sprinted out the door. I literally jumped down the steps and out the dorms, despite the Dorm Mother's shouting it's curfew. I feel the cold air nip at my skin as ran into the empty Death City, I just wanted to get away from there as far as possible. After a while, I felt exhaustion take it's course and I started slowing down. There was a bench next to a street lamp, and I sat down, burying my head into my hands as I bawled my eyes out.
"Well, what's a little girl doing out here at night?" I heard a voice said behind me, smelling the stench of beer. I was frozen in fear... I don't know why. "Well, why don't I take you to my place to stay the night?"
Something covered my mouth before I could protest, a smell hand with a rag... chloroform! I kicked, struggled, and pulled against the hand but it wouldn't budged. I couldn't hold my breath any longer and I inhaled the toxic smell. I could feel myself getting drowsy, and the man shushing me to sleep. "Shh... you'll be in great hands." And that was the last thing I heard before I fell into a deep slumber.
