The Assignment.
Finally, I arrived at Soulweilder Corporation and went up to the front desk. I noticed there was a new girl at the front desk. Her brown hair was curled in little rings. I even decided to check the little sign she had on her desk that read Lily.
Lily didn't seem to be much older than me. I knew most people started working in their occupation at 17 but she couldn't have been older than 14. Lily also had the glasses that were way too big on her face. They must've been company required or something. Lily was taller than I was but height had never been my strong suit.
"Oh, are you new here? If you're a Soulweilder you have to fill out a form. Or did you do that already?" Lily asked me, looking at the papers in my hand.
I handed her the papers. "Is there anything I else I need to do, like a blood sacrifice or pledge myself to obey the mighty lizard?"
Lily began laughing hysterically, I found her smile especially adorable. Lily had to push the glasses up her nose as they slid down. "Nothing like that, though Zucker and Mageire would love to introduce a blood sacrifice, I'm sure."
"Aren't they the leaders of this place?" I confirmed.
Lily nodded, forcing her to push her glasses up again. "Them and Seltzer, but Seltzer is pretty nice. So should I show you around before you get your assignment?"
"I'd love that." Now normally I had a much harder time making friends but this girl seemed to be one of the people I could get along with. I felt a wave of guilt for replacing my two best friends. I had been thinking about them a lot and I had to wonder exactly what had happened when Lycitor killed them.
When they had died I clearly remembered that Lycitor absorbed two green spirits and his blades became stronger. I tried to recall what we had learned about life energy but all we really knew was that it was effective against every other element and that experimentation on life soul energy caused the creation of shadow energy and the Shadow Wars.
One thing was clear, Life energy is famously green. Which meant that my friends, at least their souls, were being held by that monster and they couldn't move on to Zionlyium. The Palace of the Maker.
Lily and I walked around the entire Corporation. She showed me where they stored extra staffs and souls, where Soulwielders could stay in between assignments, where you could find food and so on.
"So, why are you working here? You look like you couldn't be older than 14?" I asked bluntly after a while.
Lily chuckled. "Well I am 14, my older sister works here too and since we both are good with multitasking and planning we both want the same type of job. So she managed to convince them to let me work here part-time."
So it was her sister I saw yesterday. That explains the glasses. "Well, that answers one of my questions. The other being why you two both have oversized glasses on."
Lily frowned. "Well... they belonged to my mom. She died in a monster attack on a destroyed outpost in Frigidity during the Cruller Expansion when I was 4. My sister and I wear them to honor our mom, and to have just a piece of her with us."
I knew what the Cruller Expansion was. The old leader of Frigidity, Elroy Cruller, had tried expanding their territory too quickly as part of his ambitious plan. It was mostly unsuccessful yet thousands more soldiers died fighting the monsters out of their homes.
I just walked with her in silence for a while. I couldn't believe she was so willing to open up to me like that. Come to think of it, didn't I see her sitting alone at lunch back in school a few times? We were about a year apart but still had the same lunch, and she had never been with anyone. Had she really never had a friend before me?
Finally, I put my hand on her shoulder. "Lily, I just want you to know that I'm here for you no matter what."
She smiled and a tear slipped down her cheek. "Thank you."
Finally, we ended up back in the lobby. There was now three new people standing in the lobby. I recognized them instantly.
The leaders of Soulwielder Corporation. Seltzer was in the center. His short blond hair was styled in a way where it all clumped together on his head. He was wearing a red robe, the sleeves were too big but his frail, pale white hands stuck out of them. Seltzer was a tall man who looked like he was very old but was only 34.
The robe fell to his feet and was full of intricate designs based on Zionlyium. Trees and forests, clean rivers, all of it was there. His smile was warm and inviting along with his bright green eyes. I knew the most about Seltzer. He was always giving speeches and the only one of the leaders who actually fought in battles.
Seltzer was also responsible for stopping a flare up of a conflict between the people of Frigidity and the people of Terialis. Which may have prevented an all-out war.
On his left was Zucker. I knew almost nothing about him. The only time we ever talked about him in school was when at the time he had slain a giant stone dragon that was attacking a small town in Terialis.
Zucker had sharp icy blue eyes and his skin was almost blue to match. Zucker's hair was dark and short and cut military style. Zucker was the shortest of the three and looked the youngest at 29.
He had a demeanor about him that was serious and respectable. Nothing like Seltzer. His robe was green and the designs were of the first time the leaders of all five realms met at once. There they worked out how they could trade and live together in harmony.
Finally, Mageire stood on Seltzer's right. Mageire had no hair and his brown eyes seemed almost dead. He was barely shorter than Seltzer but he was 32. Mageire's robe was yellow and depicted the blueprints of many designs including the infamous original transporter design.
There was nothing about Mageire that made him a leader on the outside. He was reportedly absurdly intelligent, and upon further research it was found that he had an enhancement in intelligence as well as being a Soulwielder.
This cost Mageire his speaking, however. He was mute as some sort of balance to his gifts. Mageire had designed a new system that allowed him to communicate when necessary like when he was drafting new designs.
Mageire's ancestor had designed the very first transporter that had united the five realms in the first place. Mageire had re-designed the basic concept to make it more streamlined.
I couldn't believe that all three of them were here in front of me. At school we talked about them like they were legends of the past, I never thought of them as people with beating hearts before.
"There must be a meeting about to commence. I'd introduce you but I hardly know them myself. How about we get your assignment from the commander?" Lily suggested, tugging on my arm a bit. I could understand why she would be nervous around these guys.
Seltzer turned his head and stared at me for a moment. "Another intern?" Then he noticed the staff slung over my back and frowned. "Oh, right. The age limit was lowered."
Zucker mirrored Seltzer, though he wore a grin. "Good to see another Soulwielder joining us. What is your name boy?"
"I'm Avian. Avian Exemplar, Sir." I replied, trying my best to keep my voice steady. I couldn't help but be nervous around them.
"Lily, would you be so kind as to assign him to the Glacial Outpost? They need a Soulwielder there anyways." Seltzer said to Lily, I was shocked he knew her name by memory.
Lily simply nodded, not saying a word. Zucker scowled. "They don't need a Soulwielder! That area is well protected with Wurterence warriors as well as Frigidity's own army! Even then there are rarely more than 3 reported attacks a month!"
"Now now, we can't have too much protection. That area is crucial as if it is destroyed the entire capital could be susceptible to destruction." Seltzer replied calmly.
Zucker opened his mouth but closed it. With that, the three Soulwielders turned and left the building.
"I'm going to Glacial Outpost!" I was practically jumping out of my shoes.
Lily walked back to the receptionist desk and began typing on the computer. "Why are you so excited to go to the least exciting outpost in the five realms? Seltzer specifically wanted you there because he thinks you're too young."
I followed after her. "Last summer my parents let me go to a camp that was in a village nearby there. We learned all about the history of Frigidity and how to survive in the environment. We even got to learn about monster attacks, we stayed at Glacial Outpost for two weeks and I made some good friends out of the soldiers. Like this nice old guy named Proritz. Then there was another one named Leif."
"Well, at least you'll have fun. And be sure to visit me, everyone here is so condescending. It's nice to meet someone humble for a change." Lily told me, she finishing typing on her computer and a printer whirred to life, printing out a paper. She handed it to me.
"What's this?" I inspected the paper.
"It's your assignment. They'll want to see this as soon as you arrive and you should keep it with you if you go on trips outside of your assignment."
I filed the paper and put it in my pocket. "I'll be back, I'm sure of it," I reassured both of us.
Lily smiled warmly. "Alright. Just don't get yourself hurt, the health care plan here is awful."
Chuckling, I waved and walked to the transporter room. There were four sections with multiple transporters in each section. In Soulwielder Corporation we had access to transporting to specific locations instead of just the capital city of each realm.
I stepped into Frigidity's quad and took a small spherical pin from the shelf next to it. I pinned it to my shirt. These were invented by Mageire and could emit a wave of warmth throughout your entire body. The device used the temperature to measure the intensity of the heat so it could adjust based on the climate.
I opened the glass door to Glacial Outpost and stepped inside. I close the door and in a flash of light, I vanished.
Teleportation felt weird, to say the least. It was like riding a roller coaster at the start when you get lurched forward. Fortunately, it only lasts a second. When the light faded I opened the door and was hit with a wave of cold.
The device quickly began working and warmed me up. I walked through the small hallway. The walls were made of thick ice. This ice was incredibly difficult to melt.
Slowly my memory began to recognize familiar things and I was able to make it to the Observation Deck.
At the front of this room was an ice wall that was clear. The entire snowy plateau was spread out before them. At least two feet of white snow covered the ground.
The entire outpost was made from a glacier they carved out. The glacier was right next to the small pass in the mountains that lead to the city capital. They had constructed a wall of snow in front of the pass with a narrow entrance.
The entire wall was hollow and holes for ranged projectiles scattered the wall, various portions of the glacier, and even a sniper point at the peak of the glacier.
The Frigidtion Government had spent a lot of money fortifying this area, they weren't ones to take risks after the Cruller Expansion.
The interior of the glacier was almost a town. There were multiple small huts made of snow housing elite soldiers, extra supplies and weapons, and medical supplies.
Looking out the window was Commander Xorg. I remembered him from last year. He said Xorg meant Cloaked Killer in the forgotten Yeti language.
Most Yeti were tall white-furred creatures. Their fur covered all of their bodies and provided warmth to them. They had four arms, two of which grew out of the other two's shoulders, they were ambidextrous as well. The four arms made them demons with swords.
They were incredibly muscular and capable of lifting over 300 pounds with each arm. They could also breathe a powerful frost breath that would freeze whatever it hit.
Xorg had a black sash over his chest to show he was a commander. He also had a double sword sheath slung over his back where his two swords rested. The swords were made of Floe Stone. A rock so cold that anything it touched would freeze over. One deep wound would be lethal to almost anything.
Xorg turned and looked at me. Quickly his face grew into a smile. "Well, if it isn't Avian. I don't know if you were aware but the camp is during the summer."
"I know that. I was assigned here by Soulwielder Corporation." I fished the papers out of my pocket and handed them to him.
Xorg inspected them. "You're a Soulwielder now? Congratulations kid! I always knew you were special! Though I don't know why you'd be assigned here. We have more than enough men. Still, better than you being out on the Melting Point."
The Melting Point was a fighting ground filled with thousands of monsters who were constantly attacking. Most of the Frigidity army was stationed out there with various camps scattered all over the fighting ground.
I looked out the window and noticed something. A group of cloaked Soulwielders were out in the snow.
"What are they doing?" I asked.
Xorg follows my gaze. "They're an extraction team. Just collecting some souls I presume."
Soul Collection was a very complicated process. A monster had to be defeated and then a special spell would trap their soul and imprison it into the orbs.
Of course, this was why Soulwielder Corporation was against the idea of eradicating monsters on the four realms where they lived.
Earth was the only realm free of these monsters. They raged throughout the rest of the lands. Leading to constant fightings. Every single realm had different rates of conquest but even Fiorione hadn't conquered half their world.
The parts overrun with monsters were often wastelands of destroyed land so the weaker monsters would be forced out of the only good land left while the stronger monsters would rest in their territory.
Monsters were our only source of Soulwielding so we could only wield the four main elements. Some scientists theorize that there are countless other realms full of new elements that we just can't access because our technology isn't strong enough.
Once the group had successfully caught a few stray monsters off guard they destroyed them with water spells and captured their souls. Then the group ran back inside the outpost.
"Hey Avian, how about you go see the soldiers? They'll be happy to see you I'm sure." Xorg suggested.
I shrugged and moved to leave. Remembering where the barracks were like it was the route home. This place was starting to feel more like home every day. Whether or not that made me homesick, I won't say. Yes, yes it did.

And it's out! I actually got it out on a Friday! So I hope this chapter cleared up some mysteries and some questions that may have popped up in the past few chapters. This was a pretty long chapter so I also hope it was worth the wait. Feedback is appreciated as always.
Today's Question of the Day is: Who is your favorite author off Wattpad? Mine is definitely Rick Riordan.
So that's everything. Thanks so much for reading and have a great day! Bye!
