A Soulwielder is Born.
Everything at the police station felt like a blur. They asked me a few questions and what happened. One said they had received reports about a Lizolis lurking around on roofs of buildings. Which was a good thing because I was pretty sure they thought it was me until then.
"Hey kid, are you a Soulwielder?" The one officer asked me, looking at my staff.
I shook my head. "Nope. This is just a training staff. When I tried to defend myself and..." I choked on a sob. "And my friends, I couldn't get any magic to come from it."
"Didn't you say you hit the Lizolis with some sort of attack from your staff?"
I put a hand to my chin. "Yeah, but it wasn't any attack I'm familiar with."
"Well try something with your staff. Just don't destroy the entire building." The officer told me.
I stood up and grabbed my staff. I hadn't gotten a good look at it before but I could clearly see it had changed. Now the part where the staff held one orb was what the complete staffs looked like.
The part that held the orb was now larger and was divided into four sections for the four orbs. Somehow my staff had changed into a complete staff from a training staff.
I put all four orbs into the staff and took a deep breath. I concentrated and then pointed the staff in the air. "Ice blast!" The tip of the staff cooled and multiple white beams coated the roof in ice.
"That looks like Soulwielding if I've ever seen it." The second police officer said, poking the ice.
I looked down at the staff in my hands. "So I guess I have a Soulwielding class now?"
The first officer's head shook. "Times are desperate for more Soulwielders. When someone is confirmed as a Soulwielder they're to be brought to and registered at Soulwielder Corporation. Do you know the way there?"
Of course, I knew. Everyone knew where Soulwielder Corporation was. My head bobbed up and down. Still clutching the staff I walked out of the police station.
The town seemed different. I had considered it safe and perfect before. Now I noticed the shadowy alleyways between buildings and the people lurking inside them. The air didn't smell as fresh, it was almost pungent.
The ground was covered in all kinds of litter and trash. Even the sun didn't seem as bright as before. There was some sort of darkness draping over the entire town.
In the dead center of the town was Soulwielder Corporation. They also controlled transport to the other four realms. There was a set of transporters that would take you to the capitols of their respective realms.
The transporters were small cylinders with their doors wide open. They could fit one person at a time and transportation was almost instant.
The one that went to Frigidity was a snowy white. The one that went to Wurterence was a sea blue. The transporter that took you to Fiorione was colored fire red. And finally, the one that went to Terialis was an earthen brown.
Soulwielder Corporation was a large building made of bronze metal. There was an elaborate design combining windows and colored tiling to create the Soul Quad. Each of the four orbs was glass and colored based on what they looked like in real life.
I pushed the large glass doors open and walked inside. The Corporation was a large expansive area. The floor was grey marble and the walls were painted white. People bustled about yet it still felt empty.
There was a receptionist desk just ahead of me. Two large openings spanned either side. The one on the right lead to transporters that took you to specific parts of each realm. While the one on the left was where information was held and where they stored extra souls and Soulwielder staffs.
I continued ahead to the receptionist desk. The lady looked up from her computer at me. She looked like she was 20 or 21. And she was wearing glasses that were too big. They slid down her nose and she had to push them up.
"Hello, welcome to Soulwielder Corporation. Can I help you?" She asked.
I paused for a moment, thinking how I could possibly explain what happened. "I'm a new Soulwielder. I was told that I had to register."
The lady smiled. "Oh, that's wonderful! It's been so long since we had a new Soulwielder! But you don't look like you're over 18, so you'll need to get a parent or guardian to sign this. And you also have to fill out these." She handed me a couple papers and a pen.
"Uhm alright, I can do that," I replied, I turned to leave.
"Alright, have a nice day!" The lady waved and I walked out of the building. I felt somewhat disappointed but I was glad I could finally go home.
Home. My mom and dad were probably worried sick about me. They'd never sign this form and let me risk my life out there. They didn't even want me to be a Soulwielder.
I ran through as many potential scenarios as I could before I arrived at my front door. I removed the key from my pocket, put it in the lock, unlocked the door, turned the doorknob, and opened the door.
My father was sitting on the couch reading a book. He had a large brown bushy mustache. The rest of him wasn't special. He'd just gotten home so he was still in his business attire. My father's special ability was a bit unique. He could see potential failures in a structure so he was essentially quality control for construction.
My mother worked in healing, she mostly made patients fall asleep when they are about to undergo surgery. At the time she was sitting on the floor playing with my little sister. Dressed in her casual sweatpants and sweatshirt.
My little sister, Alice, was about five years old. I honestly had no idea what she was wearing but I wasn't surprised. My sister tended to go into her closet and put on whatever she could find.
My dad looked up at me. "Hey Avian, you're just in time to help your mom make dinner."
"Unless of course, you already ate something at Lars's House." My mom said accusingly. So I guess they thought I was with Lars. Lars.
"La-Lars is dead," I said in a low whisper.
My father stood up. Somehow he'd heard me. "What happened, son?"
My mom, sensing something was wrong, picked up my sister and went upstairs. Coming back down alone.
I told them everything. About how I was a Soulwielder and how my friends were killed by that Lycitor monster.
"You're a-a Soulwielder?" My father asked after taking it all in.
My mother focused on other details. "Why wouldn't those police officers have called us?"
"They did, you guys just didn't pick up," I said. My mother fished her phone out of her pocket and checked it, her eyes widened.
"Oh, mine was dead. The one time I don't charge it..."
My father didn't even check his phone. "Mine broke at work." He explained.
I felt better knowing they hadn't intentionally ignored a call from the police. "So about being a Soulwielder. They want me to join the Corporation right now. But I need permission from you guys first because I have to travel all over the 5 realms."
My mother sighed, she looked as if she still couldn't accept that I was a Soulwielder. "Your father and I will talk about it. For now, you just go up to bed, I imagine you're exhausted."
My mom, knowing me better than I knew myself, was right. I realized just how exhausted I was and slogged upstairs.
My room was dark and my bed was so close. I just kicked off my shoes, set my staff against the wall next to my bed, and I threw the covers over my head. Even with my best friends dead, exhaustion won over and I couldn't resist the lull of sleep.
I awoke the next morning feeling refreshed. I was ready for another day of school. Then I looked over at the staff right next to me and remembered everything.
I got out of bed and got myself ready for the day. I went downstairs with my staff slung around my back.
My mother was drinking coffee at the table with my dad. Alice wasn't awake yet, I was able to tell from the lack of children's cartoons blasting from the TV.
I sat down at the table with them. "Good morning, Avian." My father said.
After approximately one billion years of dead silence, I stopped pretending there wasn't a very pressing matter before us. "Ok, I'm just going to ask, can I be a Soulwielder?"
I heard my mother sigh. "No. Avian you're 13, it's far too risky! You could get killed out there!"
I clenched my fists under the table. "Mom I finally have a special ability, more special than anyone else's, and I can't even do anything with it? I don't think they're going to send me out to do really risky jobs when I'm young. And now that my staff is actually responding I can always have the elemental advantage over anyone!"
"My answer is no and that's final!" My mother snapped. She stood and stormed off.
My father set down his cup of coffee. "Your mother is literally going to kill me. But I don't want to be the one who stops you from living out your dream and following your destiny. You mother has something against Soulwielders that even I don't know. Still, my father always tried pushing me into being a builder instead of quality control. But I followed my intuition and then I met your mother. Where's the form?"
My mouth was agape. My father was going to go behind my mom's back and let me be a Soulwielder.
He was always cool, but never this cool! I found the form sitting on the countertop and the pen. I handed them to him with shaking hands.
He signed it and we filled out the rest of the paperwork together. I collected it all in one pile and stood to leave.
"Hey son, I know you're going to be away for a while. You might want to grab some spare clothes." My father suggested. I was really glad he was helping me because I would've forgotten about that entirely.
I went upstairs and grabbed two changes of clothes and stuffed them in a backpack. I also grabbed a picture of me, Lars, and Talia at the carnival together a few years ago. Behind the picture on my dresser was a ring. I didn't remember ever having one that looked like it.
The ring was golden with various intricate designs and some sort of purple dulled gem was embedded in it. I slipped it onto my finger, figuring it was some sort of carnival trinket. Though it felt real and was heavy on my finger.
I carefully put the picture in my bag and zipped it up. I stood and threw it over my shoulders. Finally, I went back downstairs. Fortunately, my mom hadn't come back from wherever she went. I touched the doorknob and was about to open the door when my dad called over to me.
"Son, promise me something. Be careful, please."
I gave him a smile. "I will dad. I'm not going to fight a dragon or something crazy like that." I pushed the door open and ran outside. Once again the air felt clear, everything was bright and sunny. I noticed the shadows and the trash still, but they didn't seem like the end of the world.
With a spring in my step, I ran to Soulwielder Corporation.
Of course I messed up on the first week! I don't really have an excuse other than I just kept forgetting to publish this chapter. Sorry for that.
But moving on thanks so much for reading today's chapter! The Question of the Day is: What's your favorite book you've read off of Wattpad?
That's about everything, I'm going to try to actually get the chapter out on Friday next week but I may be a bit busy. As always feedback on how I can improve this story is appreciated. Have a great day! Bye!
