29 | Infidelity

You stared at the Daily Prophet on your table, mouth agape, as you were still trying to process what was going on. After what your students told you, you tried to convince yourself that it was just a misunderstanding, and you were looking for the right time to confront Severus about it, thinking that he would have a concrete explanation for the whole thing.

But now as you saw the scandalous headline of the Daily Prophet, regarding a Hogwarts professor's affair which was unacceptable, your soulmate's affair, to be exact, anger rushed through your veins. You glared at the picture on the front page— Severus and a woman, her lips were on his, just like how your students described it to you.

Every fibre in your being was enraged to murder both of them if you could.

You could not bring yourself to read the news as you knew it was saying about Severus' illicit affair, when almost everyone knew he already had a soulmate who was also happened to be a professor at Hogwarts. Of course the press would prey on this kind of news to make their papers sensational, but it was a different story for you.

You could not take your eyes off the picture, as much as you wanted to. Your mind was fogged with the thought of Severus admitting to love you, when he was seeing another woman behind your back. He dared to kiss you with the same lips he kissed the other woman. He was so ungrateful to take your love for him for granted when you let him own your soul.

He had your heart in his hands, and he decided to crush it instead of treasuring it.

Your chest tightened, as you took the Daily Prophet in your hands, hearing the breaking of your heart. All these years loving him without conditions, only to be returned with his infidelity. How foolish you were to think that he would love you until the end of the time.

"Y/N, please calm down."

Remus tried to comfort you, seeing the anger and devastation in your eyes. When he saw the news that morning, he did not even think twice but ran to see you, wanting to show you the truth, thinking that you did not deserve to be treated so poorly when you were a doting soulmate to Severus.

But now when he saw tears in your eyes, he started to regret his decision of bringing the newspapers to you. Remus did not know what to do when you looked at him, a kaleidoscope of emotions were twinkling in your eyes, waiting for the time when you would let them go.

"Calm down? He cheated on me, Remus!"

You could not control your emotions any longer, as you felt a lump in your throat. Remus opened his mouth to say something, but no words could be utter when he saw how anguished you were. His heart clenched, and he wanted nothing more but to replace your frown with your beautiful smile, unfortunately Severus had stolen your light away from you.

"I love him, Remus.. I love him so much."

You said, crushing his heart at the sound of your dejection. To know that you loved Severus instead of him was painful, but it was even more tormenting when he had to see your misery, and he could not do anything to dry your tears.

He could only watch with a heavy heart as you walked pass him, determined to confront Severus about it. Every step you took to the Potions Master's office screamed agony to him, and Remus was wrecked, but he wished that you would get the truth from your soulmate, and what you were going to do after that was not his to decide.

You opened the door of his office, not minding to knock, surprising Severus who was grading papers on his table. He raised his eyebrows, ready to throw some snarky remarks on you when he saw tears in the corner of your eyes, and the trembling of your lips. He stood up abruptly from his chair, realising that you were sad.

"Darling, what happened?"

He walked over to you, wanting to wrap his arms around you but his eyes widen when you pushed him away harshly. Severus was stunned, knowing that you would want to be in his arms whenever you were down in the drains, but now you acted as if his touch was burning you.

"Did you call her that too?"

You asked, could not help but feel so betrayed to think that he might call her with sweet names that he also used with you. Your voice was harsh and bitter that Severus almost felt like he did not know you. The pain in your eyes was evident as you glared at him, and his heart ached, not knowing the source of it.

"Y/N, tell me what's wrong."

He tried, once again, to hold you but you shoved the Daily Prophet on his face, not wanting to near him after what you had discovered. Severus took the newspapers in his hands, frowning, and his face dropped when he read the headline, along with a picture of him and woman, kissing.

"Do I mean nothing to you, Severus?"

You hissed, and he slowly looked at you, his heart shattered when it hit him hard that you were disappointed in him.

"I know you used to hate me, but I believed you when you said you loved me! I believed every word, Severus. But was it all a play pretend so you could hurt me in the worst way?"

You let out of your anger and devastation on him, wanting him to know what you really felt. Severus held the Daily Prophet tighter in his grasp, wanting to hold you and tell you that he loved you, but he knew you would not allow him to do so.

"If that is the case, then you have succeeded. You hurt me in the worst way possible, Snape."

Poison was dripping from your voice, tugging on your soulmate's heartstrings. He reached out for you but you took a few steps away from him, disgust was clear in your eyes as you looked at him.

"I can explain everything, Y/N. You have to trust me."

He begged, his heart thud rapidly against his chest when you shook your head, scoffing under your breath. Tears boiled in your eyes but you were not letting yourself cry over him. You held them back, gritting your teeth as anger and despair were battling in your chest.

"I will trust you, if you can answer my questions."

You curled your hands in fists, pushing your want to forgive him to the back of your mind, as you knew it would be imprudent for you to just let him be, when he stabbed you in the back, being unfaithful to you when you did nothing but love him with all of your heart.

Severus nodded vigorously, his own tears started to pool in his eyes. You chewed on your bottom lips, telling yourself not to cave in and forgive him easily, when he threw your love away like it was nothing.

"Did you lie to me when you said you were meeting Lucius?"

You began, seeing his eyes grew wide, and hesitantly, he nodded.

"Yes."

You swallowed his answer, stabbing you in the heart. He lied to you, when he swore to tell you everything because you were his world. You wondered if he had lied to you in many other things, but you were just too drown in love to see them.

"Were you with this woman?"

You continued, not knowing if your heart was truly ready to hear his answer. The silence was deafening, and you hated him for taking time to tell you the truth when the picture was enough to prove it. And to the breaking of your heart, he nodded weakly.

"Yes."

Your breath hitched, and much to your dismay, tears started to fall freely from your eyes. You still had one last question for him, but you felt a huge wave of agony washed over you, pulling you under. You tried your best to love him, and yet, you were not enough for him.

"But this news is not true, Y/N. I did go to see her but I didn't cheat on you."

Severus knew the odds were against him, and it was almost impossible for you to trust him, but he would never give up. He loved you, and he would do anything to save your love.

"I have one last question for you."

You were not willing to hear his lies anymore. You had been disappointed for so many times in your life, but you thought Severus was the one, who would love you for who you were, devoting his love for you eternally but apparently, you were wrong.

"Would it be better if I didn't exist?"

You asked, almost in a whisper, a broken whisper that tore Severus' heart out of his ribcage. Your question sent a pang of guilt hitting on him, bringing him back to the time when you once asked him the same thing, and his answer was what pushing you away from his life.

Severus winced, not desiring to return to the time when you and him were distant, cold with each other. His heart was wretched when you could ever think that he would rather to live without you, when your existence was the best gift for him. You were his everything.

"No, Y/N. Please do not say that, darling."

His voice broke, not able to hide how dejected he was when you doubted his loyalty to your love. You chuckled bitterly, wiping your tears away with your thumbs. You were not going to fall for his lies anymore.

"Liar."

You scoffed, forcing yourself to look him in the eyes. You found love in them, but you could not help but think if he look at the woman the way he was looking at you.

"I spend my whole life loving you, Severus."

A sad smile was painted on your face, as you had made your decision. You did not care about your job or your colleagues anymore. You had to leave and no one could stop you. You could not stay there with the man who broke your heart carelessly, as if you meant nothing to him.

"I love you, Y/N. Please trust me. I— I can bring the truth to you."

Severus stammered, finding it hard to breath as you shook your head at him.

"You betrayed our love."

This was not how you imagined your life would be once you met your soulmate, but then again, what you had with Severus was too good to be true. Perhaps your parents were right, that wherever you were, you were not destined to be happy.

"Perhaps we were meant to find each other, but we were not meant to be together."

You whispered, a strangled sob escaping your throat. You had rights to be sad when your trust was broken, and your heart was crushed. Severus felt as if air was forced out of his lungs, and as he heard your cries, he just wanted to gather you in his arms. But you stopped him, putting a hand on his chest.

"Y/N, please..."

You smiled sadly upon seeing tears in his eyes. But it was not enough to convince you to stay. He broke your heart too many times, and this time, it was over.

"Goodbye, Severus."

His heart dropped to the floor, shattering into tiny little pieces, and you were not there to mend it. You walked out of Hogwarts, without looking back, and walking out of your soulmate's life as well, leaving him to cry over you with a thousand knives pierced through his heart.

Severus sat in his chair, staring at the Daily Prophet, feeling a hollow space in his chest, where his heart belonged. You left, taking his heart along with you, and you also left him longing for the warmth of your love, which cause him to break into tears in the middle of the night, alone in his office.

A great tremor overtook his body when he opened his drawer, only for his eyes to land on a velvet box. He reached out for it with his shaky fingers, opening it slowly and it pierced his soul to see something that he was planning to give to you for awhile now.

The emerald gemstone ring shone beautifully, but his life went dull, realising that he would never get to ask you the big question. He would never get to ask you to marry him. He would never get a chance to live a happy life with you, having a future he wanted to have with you, and he would never get another day of seeing the enchanting smile on your face.

And at the moment, Severus realised there was not enough room for happiness in his life. Just pain.
