27 | Old Flame
You were lying in your bed, staring blankly at the ceiling as you remembered what happened last night during the party. You truly believed that perhaps you could fix what you have with your parents, and that they could finally be happy for you since you had found Severus. You were not expecting them to welcome you with open arms, but surely you never thought they would reveal such a huge news to you.
You felt betrayed, and deceived, as you had been living in your parents' lies for all these years. Since you were a child, you always told yourself to live up to their expectations, not wanting to disappoint them even when they kept telling you of how much of a burden you were becoming to them.
They were not good parents, they never showed you love and they made sure you believe that you were just a nuisance. But nevertheless, you loved them, and when they told you the truth, that you were not their daughter, it was breaking your heart.
You had met with many adopted children, and their parents treated them well, giving them more love than you could ever get. But perhaps it was just because of you, and your parents could not bring themselves to love you, claiming that you were burdening them.
Sighing, you rubbed your eyes, exhaustion was starting to take over your body. After you went back from the party, Severus tried his best to comfort you but he knew there was nothing he could say to fix what your parents had done. He held you close to his chest throughout the night, until he fell asleep as soon as he heard your soft snores. It broke him to see you in tears, and he just wanted to see you smile again.
Thus, when Dumbledore summoned Severus to his office this morning, along with Minerva, his heart was heavy to leave you alone. But you ushered him to the meeting, knowing it was salient for him to be present there. You did not want him to ditch his responsibilities because of you.
"I'm alright, Severus."
You assured him, chuckling when he cupped your face with his hands, looking you in the eyes to find any lies in them. When he found none, a sigh escaped his lips, as he pressed a soft kiss on your head.
"I'm worried about you."
He whispered, and his words almost brought you to tears, but you knew it would only make his worry grow even stronger. So you sent him a smile, kissing his wrist, melting his all of his worries into a puddle of giddiness.
"There is nothing to be worried about, love. I'm tougher than I look."
Your smile caused him to crack a smile as well. He trusted you, and he knew you were a strong person. It pained him to think that your parents could ever think to hurt you when he just wanted to protect you forever, treasuring you in his heart and soul.
"I believe Albus and Minerva are waiting for you."
You reminded him, as you realised he was staring at you. Not that you did not like his attention on you, you loved it, but he had things to do and you were more than capable to take care of yourself.
"They are ruining my weekend with their stupid meetings."
He mumbled, rolling his eyes and you could not help but laugh. The sound of your laughter was enough to flutter his heart, and he kissed you, again and again, until he almost forgot that he had a meeting with his colleagues. But you remembered, and when you pulled away from him, he pouted like a child.
"You have a meeting, Professor Snape."
"I don't care."
"You do care."
He contemplated for awhile, before nodding weakly at you, agreeing with you. Your smile widen and suddenly you had forgotten about the last night event, as you looked at your soulmate in pure adoration.
"I love you, Severus."
"I love you too, darling."
He stole one last kiss from you before you pushed him out of the door, waving him with a huge smile on your face, easing his heart to know that you were feeling better than last night.
Now as Severus had left to the meeting, you started to think of what to do with him when he was done. Perhaps you could go for a walk with him, or you could just stay in the comfort of your bed. Just as you were about to get out of the bed, an owl perched on your window, dropping a letter for you.
A frown was emblazoned on your face as you were not expecting a letter from anyone. Taking it in your hands, you read the letter, and your heart skipped a beat, but not in a good way as it had been years since the last time you communicated with him. You never thought he would reach out to you now, not after what happened between you and your parents last night.
Dear Y/N,
I hope you are doing well while you are reading this. I know this letter might come as a surprise, but I'm genuinely concerned about you and I want you to know that I care for you, and I have been for years.
We were children we first met, but you were special to me. You were the prettiest girl I have ever known, the brightest witch I have ever encountered, and I could still remember the gleam in your eyes every time we talked about something we loved. My heart was yours but I never realised it, until my parents sent me away for school, and I missed you dearly.
Perhaps you would think that I have forgotten about you since I never came to see you anymore, but you are always in my heart, Y/N. When our parents came to an agreement to marry us, I was the happiest I have ever been. Our families will be one, finally.
Your parents owled me about your soulmate. I know how much it means to you, as we talked about it frequently when we were young. You were always passionate about it, wanting to find the one for you. But you have to remember that the unbreakable bond cannot promise you a good life.
If you marry me, we will be able to keep our bloodline pure and I can spoil you with wealth and love more than your soulmate could ever do. I know your heart is kind, and perhaps you are reluctant to leave him because you are afraid he would hurt you. Worry not, as you can always tell me if you want my help and I will take you away from him easily.
I know you told your parents that you do not wish to marry me. But I need you think this through and make a wise decision for your future. I believe your soulmate is not capable enough to give you a perfect life you deserve, and I would hate for you to get someone who is unworthy of you.
We will give you time to think about your decision. If you change your mind about the wedding, I hope you can write back to me as soon as possible as we will have to discuss more about it.
Love,
Charles Rowle
You scoffed, could not believe that your parents would have Charles to write to you even after what happened last night. You made it clear that you wanted nothing to do with Charles, and after discovering about your parents, you were not sure if you wanted to ever see your parents again.
"I would never love anyone else but Severus."
You mumbled, crumpling the letter in your hands. You would never change your mind about the wedding, and you did not want to write back to him. He was your friend, yes, but it had been a long time and you did not owe him anything.
He claimed to be your old flame, but you knew better. You knew how he was, the way he had many lovers in his bed for the night, only to leave them the morning after. It disgusted you to think that your childhood best friend had grown up into such a person, and you did not want to be associated with him, let alone marrying him.
A smirk was dancing on your lips, as an idea popped into your head. You quickly grabbed your wand and muttered 'Incendio' under your breath, careful to make a small fire just enough to burn the letter.
"You can go to hell with your wedding, Rowle."
You chuckled, watching the letter vanished into ashes. They were bold to believe that you would forget your love for Severus just for the sake of families, and they were absolutely wrong. Not to mention, they were not even your real parents.
You waited for Severus to come back and when he did, you could not hold back a squeal as you ran into his arms. Your soulmate let out a laugh, wrapping his arms around you. It felt like days when actually it had only been hours since he went to attend the meeting.
"Did you miss me, Y/N?"
"Very much."
He smiled, but then he was reminded of something, caressing your face in his hands softly.
"I have to go to Hogsmeade."
He said, and you thought it was just a normal visit to the village. It was common for you to go with him, and the students were used to seeing their professors together that they did not care if they bumped into you and Severus anymore.
"Can I come with you?"
You grinned, and to your surprise, he shook his head. Severus' heart clenched when your face dropped, and he internally cursed himself for being foolish enough to make you sad again.
"I have a matter to settle with Lucius. I will be back before you know it, darling."
He promised, poking your nose playfully, receiving an adorable chuckle from you which sent butterflies fluttering in his stomach. You looked at him and noticed there was something bothering him, but you did not want to ask, thinking that it was a work issue with Malfoy.
"Promise me you won't be long?"
"I promise, Y/N."
You trusted him, and you knew Severus would not do anything to hurt you. You planted a kiss on his cheek, sending him to the door. Your heart was aching, as if telling you that something was not right, but you silenced your thoughts as you gave him a smile.
"Please send my regards to Lucius."
Severus nodded, pecking your lips lovingly. You shut the door and leaned against it, feeling like Severus was hiding something from you. If he had secrets, then of course he would tell you, wouldn't he? Shaking your head, you went back to bed, letting sleep take over you as your problems were forgotten.
