20 | Unrequited

Severus was a stranger to love, and he swore he had never experienced it before he met you. It was such an enthralling feeling, taking him into a whole new world that he had never been before. It was too good to be true for him, and as he watched you walk away from him, a wave of guilt washed over him.

He loved you, truly, he did but he had no power over his jealousy. Severus was a calm and collected person, always knowing what to do next in his life, solving problems like nothing mattered to him. But when it came to you, his emotions were all over the place and before he could know it, he was hurting you again.

He had no one to love before, let alone having someone loving him back. It took him too long to accept the fact that he deserved to be happy, and it was time for him to open the door of his heart, letting you make your way in. It was a huge change for him to find someone to lean on, to pour his heart and soul, and to spend his whole life with.

Hence, when he felt like his relationship with his soulmate was threatened, his feelings were battling in his heart. He did not know what to do, and it became worse when it was clear that Remus saw you as more than a friend, and yet you were always picking his side rather than your soulmate's.

Severus let out a wistful sigh, admitting that he was to be blamed for your heartbreak. He sat alone in his office during dinner, knowing that he could not bring himself to see you in the Great Hall after what he said to you earlier that day.

It was so insensitive of him to use your problem against you, when you trusted him with all of your heart, telling him things that you had never opened up to anyone else before.

He was not thinking straight when he said it, having no control over his emotions as he let his anger lead his mouth. He regretted what he did, and he knew you were anguished and disappointed in him.

Severus knew he had disappointed you once, and now he did again, betraying your trust. He was afraid if your love for him was diminishing, just when his love for you was starting to bloom stronger by day.

He was ashamed of himself. He realised he had to learn to control his feelings, even when he was afraid of losing you because if he could not, then he surely would lose you for real.

He had to think of a way to ask for your forgiveness, as he could not afford to lose you, not now and not ever. He finally found his soulmate for years, and he had fallen in love with you, it would be agonising if he were to lose you, all because of his foolish words.

On the other side of the castle, you were sulking in your room, ignoring your rumbling stomach. You did not want to go to the Great Hall for dinner just to see the man who broke your heart, the one who you still loved with all of your might.

You wondered if he meant what he said to you. A part of you was telling you that he did not mean it, as he was getting closer to you and he would never do anything to hurt you. But another was still in doubts, since you would never know if there was still a little bit of hatred for you.

You thought everything was fine. Severus seemed to be happy with you, and you could not explain it with words about how overjoyed you were to be his friend. It did not matter to you if you had to love him silently, as it was enough for you to be close to him, smiling and laughing with him like everything was going to be alright. But apparently, nothing was going to be fine.

It pierced your heart when Severus decided to bring your family problem into your argument. It was something that you despised, you hated talking about it and he knew it. He knew how much you hated it but still, he used it against you, causing you to regret to ever tell him about it.

You thought you had found the one, that finally Severus would be your true love, and someday he would reciprocate your feelings. But you were far from the truth as it was obvious that he would never feel the same. He kept hurting you like you meant nothing to him, and the remorse in his eyes was not enough to convince you that he did not mean what he said.

"Stop thinking about him."

You whispered to yourself, shaking your head weakly. It was hard not to think about Severus when he was on your mind all the time, even now after he had hurt you. It was foolish of you to keep hoping that he had finally changed.

You knew you would not be able to sleep with the horrifying thoughts in your mind, so you decided to walk down the halls to clear your mind. You had no destination in mind, waiting for your feet to take you anywhere they would.

"Y/N!"

You put your hand on your chest as a surprise gasp escaped your lips, seeing your friend walked over to you with a huge smile on his face. You could not help but mimic his smile with your own.

"You're going to give me a heart attack, Remus."

You scolded him, a playful smile was painted on your face. He chuckled under his breath, walking with you down the halls.

"You're walking alone in such a late hour. If it wasn't me, there would be something else to surprise you."

He said, trying to scare you but failing to hide his smile. You hit his arm softly, a little bit affected by his words as you looked around, making sure that there was nothing lurking in the dark.

"What are you doing here?"

"I want to clear my mind for a bit."

He nodded, eyeing you suspiciously as it seemed like there was something bothering you but you were not telling him.

"Is there something you want to tell me?"

He asked, but you politely declined, not wanting to burden anyone with your own problems. You also realised that Remus was the reason you fought with Severus, but you could not put the blame on him, as he was not the one who shattered your heart with his caustic words.

You walked with him in silence, clearing your mind from the worrying thoughts in your head. You knew Remus had his eyes on you, and you did not mind to say anything about it, as Severus' words started to sink in. Perhaps it was true that Remus never saw you as a friend, but it was more than that.

You recalled his sweet words and his lingering gaze on you, which you always ignore as they meant nothing to you. But it was obvious to everybody else, that Remus was harbouring feelings for you even when he knew you had your eyes on somebody else.

"Snape is your soulmate, isn't he?"

Your eyes grew wide at his question, and you knew he was not playing around. You never told him, and you were sure that nobody else was thinking to tell him because they did not want to get in your business.

"How did you know?"

"I know from the way he looks at you, and the way you look at him."

He almost whispered the last part, feeling a tug on his heartstrings as you did not deny his assumption. He had a smile on his face, but it was forced, and you knew him long enough to know that it was not genuine.

"Like I said before, my love is unrequited."

You admitted, no longer wanting to hide it from your friend. Remus' eyes softened at you, and he wished he could tell you the truth about him, but he could not. He knew you were in love with Severus, and even if the Potions Master did not return your feelings, it did not mean that you were moving on from him.

"I lied when I said my soulmate has passed away."

He breathed out, his heart was thumping rapidly against his chest. You stopped dead on your tracks and so was he, a sad smile was cracked on his lips. He was contemplating to tell you, but he knew he wanted to.

"My love for her is unrequited too."

He revealed, his smile dropped, as it felt even more dreadful when he said it out loud rather than to have it in his head. You did not know what to say, as you felt for him, and you knew it was absolutely awful to be in love with someone who did not love you back.

"It's her loss, Remus."

You started, nudging him with your elbow playfully. Your heart was at ease when he chuckled heartily, shaking his head at your words.

"I wouldn't say that. She's perfect, and I think she's too perfect for me."

He marvelled, looking you in the eyes as a smile found its way on his face. You nodded, wishing that Severus would ever see you just like how Remus was seeing his soulmate. It was such a dream, but it was impossible.

You tore your gaze away from him, much to his dismay and started to walk again, not wanting to bath yourself in pity with how much you wished for Severus to look at you the way Remus did to his soulmate.

Remus sighed, smiling as you looked back at him, gesturing him to follow you. You were such a wonder in his life, and it was painful for him to think that you would never know the truth from him.

"You're too perfect for me, Y/N."
