18 | Scars

Your heart palpitated against your chest as you opened the door, a gasp fell from your lips when you saw him standing in front of your door. You had never seen him so weak and defeated before, that tears pricked in the corner of your eyes as he stumbled on your doorstep.

"Remus, what happened?"

You put your arm around his waist to help him walk into your room, biting the inside of your cheeks when Remus winced in pain. There was fresh new scars on his face, and your eyes widen when you saw a scar which went from his neck across his chest, and his shirt was bloodied.

"I didn't take enough potion."

His voice was low and exhausted, and you felt so bad that your friend had to be in pain during his full moon transformation. You sat him down on your bed, frantically searching for your wand while your mind was still thinking of healing spells that you could use on him.

You were worried, and you were panicking to see him in so much pain. You knew he should have went to the hospital wing instead of your room, as Madam Pomfrey would know better what to do with his injuries, but seeing him in such an excruciating pain, you could not bring yourself to ask him why he went to you instead of her.

"This is going to hurt a bit."

You whispered in a shaky voice, and Remus could see your hand was trembling, gripping tightly on your wand. You did not want to hurt him even further, and you really wanted to help him.

"It's alright, Y/N. You're not going to hurt me."

He assured, smiling weakly at you. You nodded, muttering healing spells under your breath. You knitted your eyebrows together as you reached to the long scar on his neck, which was quite severe.

"I can't heal this wound if you don't—"

You gestured to his shirt, and he nodded, wincing in pain as he took off his shirt. You were uncomfortable to see your colleague shirtless in your bed, but he was in pain, and you needed to help him.

"Remus, this is bad. What actually happened?"

Your voice was gentle, but he could not help but feel as if he was scolded because he was being reckless. You looked at him, silently asking him to trust you.

"I crossed path with a real wolf and I got this wound."

He explained, and worry was growing in your chest as you tried to heal him. You could not imagine how afraid he was while he was alone, every month during the full moon, facing whatever that was going to happen to him. He had been through this fear for years, and it must be so hard.

"Were you scared?"

The question slipped out of your mouth before you could stop it, and you quickly looked up at him, worried if you were offending him. But Remus just smiled, his eyes never leaving yours.

"Very. I'll never know what will happen."

He responded, and you could hear a plethora of emotions that were lying underneath his voice. He seemed so tired and vulnerable after a full moon, and you had never seen him that way before.

"I wish I could do something to help you."

You thought you said it in your head, but when Remus shook his head, you realised you had been saying it out loud.

"You are helping me, Y/N. Thank you."

You returned his smile and continued to heal him. Remus had his eyes fixed on you, as you were helping him. Even when you went to take some bandages to wrap his wound, his gaze followed you until you came back to stand in front of him.

"If I hurt you, please say something."

You said, before wrapping his wound. Remus nodded weakly, his exhaustion was slowly vanishing when he looked at you, who was oblivious to his feelings towards you.

"I fought a wolf, Y/N. A bandage won't hurt me."

He teased, chuckling as your frown turned into a grin. That was what he loved about you. You managed to become his light after his darkness, and the beaming sunshine after his dreadful moonlight.

"This bandage won't hurt you, but I will."

You joked, shaking your head as a chuckle rumbled through his chest, and he bit his lip to contain a wince of pain. You cleaned and wrapped his wound carefully, not to hurt him, and he grimaced, but still, he did not say anything to alert you that he was in pain.

Blood rushed towards your face when you felt his gaze on you, and you looked up at him. Surprisingly, he did not even mind to avoid your eyes as he just gave you a smile, causing you to suppress a nervous chuckle in your throat.

"Stop staring at me, Professor Lupin."

You continued to tend on his wound, ignoring the heat on your cheeks. Remus seemed to be pondering about something, and he knew he had to talk to you about it. He kept it to himself for awhile now, and he could no longer wait as he really wanted to know.

"Have you found your soulmate?"

Remus asked, and you were taken aback. You wondered if he was asking because he knew Severus was your soulmate, or if he was just curious about your life like a friend would. He waited for your answer, his heart was thumping rapidly against his ribcage.

"I found him. But the feeling was not mutual, so we decided to stay as friends."

You revealed, a sad smile was adorned on your face. It really hurt to admit the heart-wrenching truth, when you wanted to be more than friends with your soulmate, but your feelings for him were not reciprocated.

"I see."

He muttered, and you frowned, realising that he was thinking about something that you could not figure out. You put your hand on his arm, and he flinched. There was something in his eyes, but you were unsure what he was feeling at the moment. He looked so sad, but there was a tinge of joy in his eyes, and you were not able to tell what it was about.

"Are you alright?"

He quickly nodded, looking you in the eyes. You had never been so close to him before that now you noticed the bags under his eyes, and a tired smile on his face. He always looked so happy, that you never noticed how he much was suffering alone.

"What about you?"

You questioned, tearing your gaze away from him. Remus hesitated for awhile, and you did not know why. It was as if he had something to hide from you. But then he sent you a smile, ready to talk about his soulmate.

"My soulmate has passed away."

He said, and somehow you were doubting his words. But it was not your place to question him more about it, as he quickly changed the topic into something else. You sighed, thinking that he must be dejected to remember about his soulmate when she was no longer there with him.

You were talking to him about your students' antics when they were in your class, distracting him from the pain of his wound, when you heard knocks on your door. Raising your eyebrows, you wondered who else would come to your room so early.

When you opened the door, you were flabbergasted to see your soulmate. Severus was standing in front of your doorstep so early in the morning, and he looked like he was nervous, even if you refused to believe that Severus had ever been nervous as he was always confident in what he was doing.

"Severus?"

He looked like he did not get any sleep for the night, and there was a kaleidoscope of feelings swimming in his dark eyes. You would never know that Severus was planning in his head, how should he break it out to you that he did not want to be your friend anymore, as he was falling in love with you.

"Severus, talk to me."

You interrupted his thoughts, concerned to see how tense he was. His jaw was clenched, and his heart felt like it could explode as he looked at you. He took a deep breath and decided that it was better if he was being honest to you, rather than keeping his love to himself, and risking him to lose you.

"You once said that you have loved me since the day you learned about soulmates."

He started, hoping that your love for him was still as strong as ever, and that he was not too late to feel your love again. You chewed on your bottom lip upon hearing his words, confusion was fogging your mind as you wanted to leave it behind now. You never wanted to be reminded of your unrequited love ever again.

"Why are you bringing it up now, Severus?"

You hesitated, afraid if he was realising that your friendship would never work out because of your feelings for him. However, a part of you was wishing for that Severus could return your feelings, and you would finally have him as your soulmate, more than a friend.

"Actually, I want to you to know that I am—"

He trailed off, as his eyes landed on Remus Lupin who was sitting in your bed, and if that was not the worst part yet, the professor was shirtless. Anger was blinding him from seeing that Remus was injured, and there was scars all over his body. All he saw was that Lupin was in his soulmate's bed, shirtless, looking tired in your room.

Severus felt jealousy and rage sunk deeper, gripping like claws, ripping and tearing at his chest, embedding so deep as he moved his eyes towards you. Your heart was aching, as you heard your soulmate's voice stone cold voice, which was dripping with fury and dejection.

"Y/N, why is Lupin in your room?"
