15 | Three's A Crowd
The holiday was finally over and while you thought that you were going to be sad because it meant you had classes to teach soon, it all changed when you saw the students coming in. The silence was replaced with their voices and laughter, talking to each other about their holiday. Surely, it was such a good time during the holiday, but you never despised the students either, and it was wonderful to have them back.
You had a short meeting with Albus and Minerva that evening, and as soon as it was finished, they started to tell you about a new teacher who would take the position in the Defence Against the Dark Arts subject. From the way Minerva and Albus talked so highly about him, you would be lying if you say you were not interested to see him during dinner.
They said the new teacher was a student at Hogwarts, and you were looking forward to see him, considering he must have had more experience with the school than you. You excused yourself when they were so engrossed in their conversation, wanting to meet Severus before the dinner started.
You knew Severus was not very happy that day, as he told you that he would prefer the serenity in the castle without the students, but you just shrugged him off, thinking that deep within his heart, he missed his students just as much as you did. It was not like Severus would ever tell you that he just wanted to spend more time alone with you.
As you walked towards the Great Hall, eager to see Severus, you did not notice a certain wizard who was walking towards you. You were lost in your thoughts whilst he was rushing in his steps because he was late, and neither of you could stop it when you bumped into each other.
You yelped when you almost fell on the ground, cursing yourself for being so careless, when you felt arms around you, catching you before you could reach the ground. Heat rushed towards your face when you realised the man who bumped into you caught you in his arms, and you were so close to him that you could almost hear his thumping heartbeat.
"I'm very sorry for bumping into you."
He muttered his apologies, letting go of his arms around you so you could stand properly on your feet. You chuckled under your breath and shook your head.
"No, I'm sorry. I have tendency to bump into people. Literally."
You blurted out, thinking of the first time you bumped into Severus, and he just walked away from you. Your heart fluttered at the thought of your soulmate, and you could not help but smiled. Perhaps he did not catch you in his arms like this guy did, but you surely fell for him that day.
"I'm Y/N L/N, the Charms professor."
You introduced yourself, smiling at the stranger. It did not feel right to just walk away without being polite to him, since there must be a reason for him to be in the school ground. His face lightened up when he realised that you were one of the teachers at Hogwarts.
"Well, you are a charming person and you teach Charms."
He mumbled, and your eyes grew wide. He seemed to realise that he had said it out loud, and you laughed when his face turned red. He let out a chuckle upon realising that you were unperturbed by his words. He was expecting you to roll your eyes at him and walk away, but much to his delight, you did not.
"I'm Remus Lupin. It's nice to see you."
You gasped in realisation when you heard his name, recognising him right away as the new teacher.
"You're Professor Lupin! I've heard that you were coming from Albus and Minerva."
Excitement was dripping from your voice and it warmed the new professor's heart, feeling welcomed there. Nerves were wrecking his soul, and he was glad to meet you before he could see the students. It had been so long since the last time he came, and now that he was a teacher, it felt so strange for him.
"Please call me Remus."
You nodded, shaking his extended hand, glad to start a friendship with your new colleague. Suddenly, his smile dropped and it felt as if he was looking right into your soul, making shiver ran down your spine. A frown found its way on your face when Remus looked like he could faint, and you quickly called out his name.
"Remus, are you alright?"
Your voice seemed to bring him back from his trance, and a smile was cracked on his lips, the visible shock on his face was now gone.
"I'm fine. I'm just a little bit nervous."
He admitted, making a breath of relief escaped your lips. You crossed your arms against your chest, a smirk was dancing on your lips when you noticed he was staring at you.
"Is there something on my face?"
You grinned, and Remus quickly shook his head, a smile was emblazoned on his face. You had to admit that the new teacher was handsome, and he seemed like a very kind person. He was attractive, but Severus was much more attractive in your eyes, there was just something mysterious about the Potions Master which was pulling you towards him. You bit the inside of your cheeks, shaking your thought away from your mind.
"I'm sorry. Can you show me the way to Dumbledore's office?"
You nodded, thinking that he must have forgotten the way to the headmaster's office because it had been years since he left Hogwarts. You walked with him towards Dumbledore's office, completely forgetting about your intention to see Severus before dinner.
On the other hand, Severus was losing his mind when he saw the students flooded in the Great Hall. It felt like he did not spend enough time with you during the holiday, and now he had to share you with the students. It did not help him either when the students were extremely fond of you.
There was a hint of smile on his face when you walked into the hall, but he did not allow himself to show his emotions as the students were there. He would be the talk of the school if he ever show his feelings in front of them.
However, his face scrunched up into a scowl when he saw Remus Lupin walked into the hall after you, along with Minerva and Albus. He knew about the news of him coming to Hogwarts as the new teacher, and he could not care less about it, but when he saw Remus walking next to you, looking at you with adoration in his eyes, Severus felt like he could strangle his new colleague to death.
"Hi, Severus!"
Your voice calmed him down immediately, and he gave you a small smile as you sat next to him like you always did. But his heart clenched when Remus took a seat beside you, and much to his dismay, you were now sitting in the middle of them.
You could feel how intense Severus was when Remus was there, and you frowned when you realised Remus' face dropped when his eyes landed on your soulmate. You put the pieces together and concluded that they had their own issue which you did not want to know.
"Do you guys know each other?"
You smiled, ignoring how awkward it was when Remus and Severus glared at each other, and if looks could kill, one of them would be dead by now. They nodded, and before you could ask anything else, Dumbledore was ready to start his speech.
The older wizard talked about something that you did not really pay attention to, as you were busy looking at Severus, who was clenching his jaw and curling his hands in fists. You wondered if he was so tense because of Remus' presence that evening.
"I'm pleased to welcome Professor R.J Lupin who will fill the post of Defence Against The Dark Arts teacher. Good luck, Professor."
You moved your gaze from Severus towards Remus, who was introduced to the students by the headmaster. As he stood up from his chair, you just realised how charismatic he was and you were sure the students would love him.
You did not realise that Severus had his eyes fixed on you, and it irked him so much to see you watching Remus in awe. You were clearly fascinated by the new teacher, and jealousy crawled over Severus' chest, gripping into his heart.
As dinner started, Severus thought that it was a chance for him to divert your attention from Remus, but before he could talk to you, Remus beat him to it. He was tempted to roll his eyes when the Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher lulled you into a conversation, as if he was not there.
He thought that he had to share your attention and affection with the students, but now it seemed like he had to share them with Remus too, and Severus was not liking the idea at all.
He glared at Remus when the wizard said something that made you laugh. Usually the twinkle in your eyes would send butterflies fluttering in his stomach, but suddenly it was making him feel sick because Lupin was the one who was causing you to be so overjoyed, and not Severus.
He wondered if Remus knew that you were his soulmate. Somehow he wanted Remus to know about it, and as much as he did not want to be possessive over you, there was something tugging on his heartstring, telling him that Remus' presence there was going to ruin everything he had with you.
He realised he had agreed to be friends with you, but his feelings were blooming for you every day, and sometimes he pondered if he was in love with you, but he did not want to put his hopes high, afraid if he might hurt you again if it happened to be nothing more than an infatuation.
But Severus felt like air was forced out of his lungs when he heard Remus' offer to walk you back to your room. He gritted his teeth when you nodded with a smile, disappointing him as he was expecting you to turn Remus down and go with him instead.
Remus was just walking you back to your room, and nothing more than that. Severus was trying to tell himself that there was no need to be furious about it when he had you as your soulmate, and Remus did not.
"Good night, Severus."
You walked over to him, placing a kiss on his cheek casually, as it was something that you were accustomed to do since a few days ago, and Severus found it necessary for him to sleep well with your kiss on his cheek. There was no nightmare disturbing his sleep since he knew you were always there for him.
Severus smirked as he did not miss the disapproving look on Remus' face when he saw you kissed Severus' cheek, noticing how close you were with him. He could see questions in the new teacher's mind, but he did not ask you anything about it.
"Good night, Y/N."
He responded, watching as you walk away with Remus. He could still feel your kiss lingering on his cheek, and it brought a sad smile upon his face to think that your action was merely because of you were his friend, and nothing more than that.
Sighing, he put his hand on his cheek, wishing that you could stay longer with him but now you were not there anymore. Dropping his hand to his side, he shook his head, scoffing at himself for being so enchanted with you that he was starting to miss you every time you were away.
Severus was aware that you were friendly with everyone, however it felt so different with Remus. Perhaps he was overreacting, but his poor heart just could not handle it when it felt like Remus was stealing you from him, just as he was about to have you back in his life.
