Broken Strings Pt.2

Marinette and Luka walked along the deserted streets of Paris, as they enjoyed the comfortable silence between them. Luka was extra chipper today, occasionally bending down to her ear, murmuring humorous remarks on the few people on the street, which made her giggle incessantly.

He turned towards her and asked gently, with concern in his voice, "Are you tired? "
She shook her head adorably and he smiled.

They walked a little more, until they reached a small park. It was a green pasture, with a row of trees lining around it, the dew moist grass sparkling on the moonlight.

As they walked in, pushing past the small gate, she noticed a large sheet on the ground, with a picnic basket and a bottle of wine on it. She looked at Luka with wonder and he smiled.

Marinette jumped up and down in excitement and hugged her husband tightly, him laughing heartily at her childishness. Luka settled down on the sheet, leaning against the tree and patted the space beside him in invitation. Marinette smiled giddily and sat down beside him, brimming with happiness. Luka hugged her, her head resting on his chest, listening to his steady heartbeats, as his arms encircled her in an embrace. They looked at the night sky together, full of stars and the ethereal shine of the moon.
Marinette felt safe in his arms. A feeling of contentment and happiness flooded her. She, him and their child. It was going to be just perfect. She looked up at him, his handsome profile hovering over her, staring at her intensely.

She joked, "Mr., you shouldn't look at me like that. What if I tell this to your wife?"

He whispered lovingly, "Not if I tell this to your husband first, Mrs."

They laughed.

Suddenly, it began snowing.

This was the first snowfall in Paris ever since winter came. Snowflakes floated down in cotton candy...

"The snow is so beautiful..." Marinette looked up, the white snow added a hint of romance to the night skies.

Luka slowly said, "Apparently, if you walk in the snow with the person you love, you might just become white haired together."

Marinette stood up and looked at Luka, there were snowflakes in his hair, as he sat against the tree.

"Mr. Couffaine, may I have the honor of taking a stroll with you? " she smiled as she asked.

"I guess I have no choice but to say 'yes', Mrs. Couffaine," Luka stood up and lovingly rubbed her head.

They walked around together, amidst the snowfall.

Luka held her hand, the warmth in his palm transmitting into hers.

Just like an old couple, they quietly walked around in the snow. They remained silent, but it wasn't awkward at all.

Feeling emotional, Marinette took her phone out and put her cheek against Luka's, capturing the moment forever.
Then, she uploaded this selfie in Instagram with a caption, "If you don't leave me, I won't leave you till I die."

Their friends commented one after another and Marinette replied to them as she happily read them out to Luka.

They strolled around in the snow for a long time...
-------------------------

Adrien was chatting with Alya and Nino at his house, when Alya's phone dinged with a notification of Marinette's upload. She took it up and smiled at picture, before typing something on the phone.

Alya's phone was an IPhone 7 and the screen was really large.

Adrien saw a photo of Marinette when she placed the phone on the table...

He originally thought that it was a photo of just her, so he grabbed her phone to take a look.

However, he quietly kept the phone back with a depressed expression on his face, after seeing that it was a photo of Marinette and Luka.

Suddenly, Alya turned around to face Adrien, "Aren't you tired of your single sided affection for her? Even if you know that she is deeply in love with someone else, you still won't give up? "

"Alya..." Nino wanted to stop her.
It took a long time to open him up today. When they had rung the doorbell, standing at his doorstep this evening, Adrien had asked them to leave, reasoning that he was busy. Alya had forced their way in, much to his discontent. Adrien had slowly opened up to them. They had carefully avoided talking about 'her'. Everything was going perfect until he became depressed seeing her photo.

And since, they were already talking about it, Alya glared at Nino," Don't butt in, let Adrien answer. He is a grown up man, you shouldn't protect him all the time like his mother. "

Adrien looked up and said slowly, "Of course, I get tired. I'm not Jesus, for crying out loud, I'm still human. Sometimes, I also feel like a fool, knowing that my feelings for her are never going to be reciprocated. I want Marinette to be my side, but things aren't... that simple... I like her and that's my problem. I didn't trouble her, nor did I purposely try to break them up, so I feel that my love for her is somewhat justified, you know? I know that she doesn't like me. I get all that, but my heart doesn't... I told myself to give up more than once, and that I'll never get a chance with her, but everytime I do, my heart begins to throb... In the end, I decide to push all those thoughts away and just love her. You guys all know that I love Marinette, the entire world knows that I love Marinette, even Luka knows that I love Marinette. I think it's for the best. She's not mine, my love for her isn't cheap and twisted... At least, I won't hit Luka when he's down and at least I didn't look for ways to break them up, right? "

The two of them fell silent upon hearing this...

Adrien was speaking the truth. He then added, "Honestly, you guys don't have to feel bad for me at all. I think it's rare for a person to meet someone he's willing to do everything for, it really is. Not everyone is as lucky as I am, so even if Mari doesn't end up dating me, I still think it's for the best... I'm just letting things be, really...I don't want anything more from her....I'm satisfied as is. "

Adrien knew that he couldn't be more greedy; it was good enough that he could occasionally see her, read her social media updates and hear his friends talk about her.
If she was meant to be his one day, she would be. If she wasn't, he wasn't going to force her.

So, he had decided to admit defeat and let things be... He was speechless that God had purposely toyed with him like this and arranged such a deadly encounter.

But, deep inside, some where in his heart, he couldn't but selfishly want her.

Alya fell silent. She was going to try to convince him to give up, but after hearing what he said, she felt that he had a point.
He wasn't putting her in danger or hurt her in any way, so why he shouldn't be allowed to love her?

Forcing him to give up on Marinette was a little bit cruel...
------------------
Marinette and Luka chatted casually as they walked down the street, ice cream cones in their hands. They had stopped by the Boulangerie Patisserie on their way back and picked up some desserts for dinner.

Luka held her hand as they waited to cross the road. The cars with blinding headlights zoomed past them speedily. When the traffic sign showed the pedestrian signal, Marinette tugged on his hand and ran out in the road. Luka suddenly noticed a flash of light on her from the corner of his eye.

Without wasting any second, he jumped in front of her and pushed her roughly on the side. She tumbled at the sudden push and collapsed on the ground. The driver stepped on the brakes and tried to steer away, but it was too late.

The car ran over him.

Marinette shouted out in horror. A blood curling scream that tore her voice and pierced the silent neighborhood. Tears fell uncontrollably as she stumbled up and ran over to him and fell near him,"Luka? Honey? Please, talk to me, please, come on, don't scare me like that-" Hearing her shout, a crowd had gathered around them.
She cradled his bloodied body in her lap as she cried heartbreakingly. Someone in the crowd called the ambulance. The car had already driven away, leaving streaks of blood across the road.

A faint voice said, "Don't cry, cough Mari. It cough cough doesn't suit you.

Marinette looked as if she saw a beam of hope, "Honey? "

Luka whispered in a near inaudible voice, attempting at humour,"The one and only. "
The feeble attempt made her smile a little. But that smile morphed into tears. She broke down again, "Why would you...why would you do that? "

He panted heavily," I will take...the hit for... you, Mari. Every time.. "

She kissed his forehead. He wheezed, ignoring Marinette's repeated convincing him to keep quiet.

The ambulance arrived and they temporarily separated as the people laid him on the stretcher and pushed him onto the van. Marinette climbed in the back with him. The ambulance rushed out. Luka looked at the panic stricken Mari who held his hand like her life depended on it. He feebly said, "Mari? "

She looked at him with concern, "Does it hurt? It's going to be alright, babe."

He smiled tiredly,"Mari...I know....it's time for me....to go..."

Marinette hurriedly said, "No. It's not. You promised me. You can't take your words back, Luka. "

Looking at her, he smiled," Tell Etienne... or Aimée...that Daddy loves...them..and always watches... over them."

Marinette shook her head indignantly, "I'm not going to listen to this. The doctors are gonna treat you and you will tell our child yourself. "

Luka felt himself slowly feeling drowsy. He kept himself awake, "Mari, come... closer? "
She lurched forward.

"I know you're Ladybug."

Enjoying the surprised look on her face and battling with the pain inside him, Luka sat up with much effort and kissed her on the lips. It was only a peck before he fell back down with excruciating pain.

Marinette caressed his face with her cool fingers. Reveling in the touch on his face, he looked at her beautiful face hovering over him. He held her hand as tightly as he felt very sleepy. Luka tugged her even closer and smiled weakly,"I....love...yo..u, M..a-ma-Mar....ine..tte."

His grip on his hand loosened as he embraced the darkness that lured him, promising silence and comfort.

She shouted as she saw him close his eyes,"What is happening? Why did he close his eyes? "

The doctor checked his stats and assured her, "He's just unconcious. "

She held his hand tightly in both of hers as the ambulance raced through the streets of Paris, much like the fears in her mind. The tears dried on her cheeks, leaving marks on her pale skin. Her eyes burned and the painful pressure behind her skull tormented her, but she didn't cry.

She didn't have enough strength left in her to even cry. She leaned against the vehicle as she looked at Luka, breathing so infrequently, that it didn't seemed like he was breathing at all.

She kissed his hand, while caressing his face with hers, as one thought repeated in her mind,
'You have promised me Luka. You have promised that we'll spend the rest of our lives together. Keep it. Stay. You have promised me, honey.'

The beeping noise of the ambulance echoed in the cold, dead winter night as it did in her numb heart.
