•All of them•
XXXII. All of them.
It was a bit after I saw Irina in the mountains, me Edward and Delia were still at the main house. Everyone was gathered in the living room. I was sitting with Rosalie and Esme, talking. Edward sat at the piano with Carlisle leaning against it as they talked, and Jasper and Emmett were watching TV. Delia was running around, playing by herself.
Alice walked into the room carrying a vase with freshly plucked flowers. She suddenly halted, and the vase slipped from her hands and shattered on the floor. Everyone was immediately silent as they turned to look at Alice, her dazed look revealing she was having a vision.
Jasper was up from the couch and by her side within a second. "What is it, Alice? What is it?" he questioned, his eyebrows furrowing as he touched her arm softly.
"They're coming for us. All of them." Alice muttered softly as she stared wide-eyed into the distance, looking horrified.
"Who Alice?" I asked in confusion as I stood up, on instinct, moving closer to where Alice stood.
"The Volturi," Alice revealed and everyone shared confused looks among themselves. "All of them," she added as her wide-eyed gaze lowered to the floor.
"Why? How?" Emmett questioned as he stood up and moved closer to the rest of us.
"When?" Edward questioned and Delia moved closer to her father, standing beside him as his protective arm wrapped around her, pulling her closer.
"Why?" Esme questioned as her eyebrows furrowed.
"When?" Jasper asked, speaking over Esme as his hand remained on Alice's arm.
"Not long," Alice and Edward said at the same time, Edward staring at his sister, reading her thoughts as she skimmed through her vision.
"There's snow on the forest, snow on the town. Two weeks. A day or two after Christmas." Alice spoke softly, her dazed stare still lowered onto the floor as she skimmed through the vision.
"Why?" Carlisle repeated Esme's previously unanswered question.
"They must have a reason," Rosalie spoke up as she crossed her arms over her chest, her eyebrows furrowed and a frown working its way onto her lips.
"I thought they wouldn't make the trip to see me?" I questioned as I looked between Carlisle and Edward with raised eyebrows.
"They wouldn't," Carlisle confirmed as he shook his head and I sighed softly, not understanding why the Volturi would come then. Did they find out my mother's knows something?
"This isn't about Ana," Alice denied as she shook her head, her gaze returning to the family. "They're all coming, Aro, Caius, Marcus, every member of the guard, even the wives." She explained and everyone looked confused and horrified.
My eyebrows furrowed, confused because I didn't understand. Jasper noticed my confusion and his gaze turned to me. "The wives never leave the tower," he explained. "Never. Not during the Southern Rebellion. Not when the Romanians tried to overthrow them. Not even when they were hunting the immortal children. Never." he informed me.
"They're coming now," Edward argued as his jaw clenched.
"But why?" Carlisle questioned his eyebrows deeply furrowed as he crossed his arms over his chest. "We've done nothing! And if we had, what could we possibly do that would bring this down on us?" he questioned as he shook his head.
"There are so many of us," Edward suggested as he shrugged his shoulder, still keeping a protective hold on our daughter. "They must want to make sure that....."
"That doesn't answer the crucial question!" Carlisle argued as he shook his head. "Why?" he questioned again.
"Go back, Alice," Jasper told the small brunette woman, giving her arm a soft squeeze. "Look for the trigger. Search." he urged her.
"It came out of nowhere, Jazz," Alice replied softly, eyebrows furrowing as she shook her head. "I wasn't looking for them, or even for us. I was just looking for Irina. She wasn't where I expected her to be... "She muttered softly. "She decided to go to them; Irina decided to go to the Volturi. And then they will decide... It's as if they're waiting for her. Like their decision was already made and just waiting on her..."
I stared at Alice as a sinking feeling settled inside my chest. It all made a lot of sense. Irina had seen Delia, a small child who was jumping nearly as high as a vampire to catch snow. Irina, whose mother had turned a small child into a vampire. But Jasper said they didn't all join when they were hunting immortal children. So why now? Maybe after everything, after Carlisle left their coven, after Edward fell in love with a human, after Edward nearly exposed vampires, after he denied joining the coven, after starting an alliance with wolves...after it all, it was personal.
"Can we stop her?" Jasper questioned as he raised his eyebrows at Alice.
"There's no way. She's almost there." Alice replied, letting out a heavy sigh as she shook her head.
"What is she doing?" Carlisle questioned as his eyebrows furrowed in confusion.
I looked at Carlisle, a frown tugging at my lips. "To someone who'd lost a mother because of the immortal children, what would Delia look like?" I asked softly as I bit down on the inside of my cheek.
Carlisle's face fell as he stared at me, coming to the same conclusion as I did. "An immortal child," he admitted softly as he nodded his head. On instinct, Edward's arm tightened around Delia, pulling her closer to his side as he scowled at the thought.
"But she's wrong," I snapped in anger as I shook my head. The daze that always lingered in my head wasn't strong enough to make me ignore the potential danger my daughter was being put in. "Delia isn't like those other children. They were frozen, but she grows so much every day. They were out of control, but she never hurts my mom or Charlie or the wolves or even shows them things that would upset them. She can control herself. She's already smarter than most adults. There would be no reason..."
"It's not the kind of crime they hold a trial for, love," Esme spoke up as she came to stand beside me, placing comforting hands on my arms. "Aro's seen Irina's proof in her thoughts. They come to destroy, not to be reasoned with."
"But they're wrong," I whispered as I slowly shook my head, a deep frown tugging at my lips.
"They won't wait for us to show them that," Edward replied, his voice just as soft as he shook his head as well. He rubbed one arm up and down Delia's arm as she tensed up, sensing the danger that was lurking, closing in on her.
"What can we do?" Rosalie questioned as she looked over at Carlisle for answers, but he pursed his lips, having no answers to give.
"We fight," Emmett insisted with determination in his voice and on his face.
"We can't win," Jasper argued as he shook his head.
"Well, we can't run. Not with Demetri around." Emmett argued back as he shook his head as well, crossing his buff arms over his chest. "And I don't know that we can't win," he added as he shrugged his shoulders. "There are a few options to consider. We don't have to fight alone."
I looked at Emmett, meeting his gaze as he quirked his eyebrow at me. "We don't have to sentence the Quileutes to death, either, Emmett," I replied softly as I slowly shook my head, frowning deeply.
"Be realistic, though do you think Jacob or Sam is going to ignore an invasion? Even if it wasn't about Lia?" Emmett asked me as he raised his eyebrows, his head tilting to the side. "But I was also thinking of our other friends," he suggested as he glanced at Carlisle.
"Other friends we don't have to sentence to death either," Carlisle replied as he shook his head.
"Hey, we'll let them decide," Emmett suggested as he held his hands up in defense, shaking his head as well. "I'm not saying they have to fight with us. If they'd just stand beside us, just long enough to make the Volturi hesitate. If we could force them to stop and listen." he explained before frowning a little. "Though that might take away any reason for a fight..." he said, a little disappointed.
"Yes," Esme agreed as she nodded her head. "That makes sense, Emmett. All we need is for the Volturi to pause for one moment. Just long enough to listen." she reasoned as she looked at Carlisle.
"We'd need quite a show of witnesses," Rosalie said as she crossed her arms over her chest.
"We can ask that much of our friends. Just to witness." Esme insisted as she nodded her head, a new look of determination on her face.
"We'd do it for them," Emmett said as he shrugged his shoulders.
"We'll have to ask them just right," Alice said as he eyes flickered towards Delia who still stood safely at her father's side. "They'll have to be shown very carefully," she mumbled softly.
"Shown?" Jasper questioned as he looked at Alice with furrowed eyebrows.
"Delia," I said as I realized what Alice was thinking. Delia had to show them her thoughts, her memories of when she was born.
Alice nodded her head in agreement before lifting her hand, counting allies on her fingers. "Tanya's family, Siobhan's coven. Amun's Some of the nomads. Garrett and Mary for certain. Maybe Alistair." she listed.
"What about Peter and Charlotte?" Jasper questioned as he quirked an eyebrow at Alice.
"Maybe," Alice muttered as her eyes squinted a little, trying to see any of it in her visions.
"The Amazons?" Carlisle questioned.
"Kachiri, Zafrina, and Senna?" Alice asked and Carlisle nodded. She went silent for a second, her eyes narrowing as she tried to skim through her visions. With an annoyed huff, she shook her head. "I can't see."
Edward stared at Alice, looking at her visions through her mind. His eyebrows furrowed as he shook his head. "What was that?" he questioned as he looked at her. " That part in the jungle. Are we going to look for them?"
"I can't see," Alice huffed as she shook her head in annoyance and frustration. "We'll have to split up and hurry, before the snow sticks to the ground. We have to round up whomever we can and get them here to show them." She instructed. "Ask Eleazar. There is more to this than just an immortal child," she said as she looked at Edward, already stumbling towards the door. "There is so much. We have to hurry,"
"Alice," Edward called out and Alice stopped to face him. "That was too fast, I don't understand." He argued as he stood up to face his sister.
"I can't see," Alice argued in frustration as she scowled. "Jacob is on his way."
"I'll deal with-" Rosalie suggested as she turned to leave the living room.
"No, let him come," Alice stopped her sister as she shook her head. "I'll see better away from Delia, too." She admitted softly as she sighed. "I need to go. I need to really concentrate. I need to see everything I can. I have to go. Come on, Jasper, there's no time to waste!" she rushed as she grabbed Jasper's hand and turned to leave."Hurry! You have to find them all!" She called out as she and Jasper left the house in a hurry.
