22| Playing with souls
I curiously watched as Finlay went round and round of Kayle scratching his head as if thinking what to do.
"What is he doing?" Kayla asked, bouncing on her steps.
"Observing you."
"I'm not looking fat in this, right?" She soothed her purple sunny dress, and I chuckled.
"You look perfect." I beamed and darted my eyes to Finlay. "What are you waiting for?"
"I'm sorry to disappoint you Amber, but I don't have a Ph.D. in souls." He rolled his eyes.
"Just do what your guts say." I waved my hands.
Sighing, he stepped closer to Kayla, and I saw her visibly shiver.
"Is he close to me?" She asked, and I nodded. "I think I can feel him."
I frowned at that, but before I could process it, Finlay went into her. My eyes widened when he didn't pass her and Kayla went still.
"Kayla?" I cautiously got up from the couch when she didn't respond. "Fin?" None of them answered me.
Kayla's eyes slammed shut, and she shook vigorously. I stepped closer to her and jolted back when her head jerked back.
"Guys, you are scaring me. I think we should stop this..." I trailed off and my eyes bugged out when the lights in my room flickered.
I glanced my eyes at the bulb on my lamp and flinched when it popped.
"What the fu-" I halted when the lights turned off and there was darkness. "Guys?"
I winced and closed my eyes when the room brightened again. Blinking my eyes to adjust the lighting, I scanned Kayla standing in the middle of the living room with her head ducked.
"Kayla?" I took a step towards her and extended my hand to her. "Are you ok-AAAAH!" I screamed and jerked back when she lunged at me.
"You are mine!" I stumbled backward and fall on my couch.
"WHAT THE F**K?!" She straddled me on the couch and I tried to push her off, but she grabbed my arms.
"What Amber?" She gave me a mischievous grin. "Aren't you happy to see me?"
"Fin?" My eyes grew big but my head whirled to my left when I heard a familiar guy laughing his a** off.
Wait...
If Finlay is there then...
"Amber..." I twisted my head back to Kayla. "How do I look?"
"F**k Kayla, stop playing with me," I grumbled and shoved her off.
"I'm not Kayla, I'm Fin." She gave me a toothy grin, getting off me.
"You're not because he is there laughing his a** off." I pointed at him.
"Oh, right, I forgot you could see him." She gave me a sheepish grin.
"It wasn't funny. I almost had a heart attack!" I growled, then turned to Finlay. "And you stop laughing."
"It was hilarious!" He wiped his eye still laying on the floor. I rolled my eyes at him, then turned to Kayla.
"So it didn't work."
"Something happened." She mumbled, smoothing her hair. "I felt weird inside... Like something was pushing me and then nothing."
"What about you?" I asked Finlay.
"She is right about the pushing part. Since a body contains only one soul, I had to make space for mine to fit."
"Why did you stop?"
"I didn't want to hurt her." He said, standing up.
"But what if it worked-"
"I had to push her soul to settle myself in her. What if I did it the wrong way and she wouldn't have come back?"
"That's a possibility-"
"One possibility, but as I said, I don't want to hurt either you or her. We shouldn't be playing with souls."
"Fine." My shoulders slumped, and I turned to Kayla, who was blinking her eyes at me. "What?"
"You look like a nutcase talking to yourself, but after what I just felt, I know he's real."
"Now that you've confirmed I'm not losing brain cells here, let's see what we can do with why I'm seeing him," I said, getting back on the couch.
Kayla helped me look into Finlay's parents. We found little about his mother, but we found that Mr. Fergus Cockburn got married to someone in Scotland and they have a son, Neil Cockburn. He looked similar to Finlay, and I had a feeling he was the guy the guard was talking about.
There was no information regarding Finlay or any link to his or Fergus's marriage to Aurora. We guessed something must have happened between them.
Finlay was for sure Fergus's son because he looked exactly like him and Fergus loved Aurora but... Maybe they fell out of love and Aurora moved with Finlay to New York and that's the reason Finlay was not in any of their family pictures.
But where is she now?
We looked for more things related to Aurora Reed but found nothing. Around Midnight we gave up and called it a night. Kayla left for her house because we had to work on Monday and she didn't have clothes to wear. I offered her mine, but we both knew they won't fit her.

In the morning, it was hard for me to wake up after the lack of sleep and my constant nightmares. I reluctantly got ready and made myself breakfast. I thought back to the ring and the wooden box I kept in my car gearbox.
It must be his mother's ring and now that it's confirmed, Fergus is a rich dude. He might have gotten it. But what happened after that?
I glanced at Finlay, who was standing near the window in the living room staring absently outside.
Finlay had been quiet since we found out about his parents. He looked deep into his thoughts, trying to think of what might have happened, but no clue. My eyes darted over his face and my heart ached at the sight of sadness. He's always the carefree one. I bit my lip and thought of a way to cheer him up.
"Watcha thinking?" I asked, standing in front of him.
"About my parents."
"What about them?"
"I know where my father is, but what about my mother?" He frowned. "I could feel I'm closer to her, but where is she? And the question is that my accident news was all over the media, so why isn't she here for me?"
"Maybe... She didn't see it?"
"Or she doesn't want to do anything with me." He sighed.
"Fin..." I stepped closer to him. "After living with you for the past few days, I got to know you..." His eyes flashed with hope and I gave him a deadpan look. "And you are annoying as hell, so I don't blame your mother."
He burst out laughing and I was glad to see him happy again.
"You are something else, Amber."
"I'm aware of that." I winked and gave him a cheeky grin.
"Amber... I need to tell you something." He said, seriously making me gulp.
He darted his ocean eyes at me. I didn't know how to swim and I once almost drowned when I was a kid. After that, I've always stayed away from the oceans, but something about his eyes wanted me to drown in them.
"What?" I asked.
"I-" The bell cut him off. I frowned and turned towards the door. "Is it Kayla?"
"No, she'll meet me at work," I answered walking towards the door and peeped through it. "It's Conner."
"What is he doing here this early?" Finlay's brows dipped in anger and something inside me stirred.
"Let's ask him," I mumbled, and opened the door. "Hi, Conner." I beamed, but it faltered when I saw two police officers with him, the same ones I saw at the club. "What's going on?"
"Amber, I'm going to request you to not panic and come with us quietly," Conner said, looking straight into my eyes with his dull, brown ones.
"Excuse me?" I tilted my head in confusion.
"He means we are here to arrest you, Miss Katz." The other officer, with glasses and dark hair, stepped forward.
"What the f**k?" I almost laughed. "For what?"
"For the attempted murder of Mr. Finlay Reed."
I... What?!
