•Forks•

I. Forks.

The move from Phoenix to Forks was a hard blow for me. It was two years after my father's death in a car accident, when my mother sprung the news on me. We were packing up our whole lives in Phoenix, and moving to my mother's childhood hometown.

For my mother, Phoenix reminded her too much of my dad. Every little thing brought back thousands of memories good and bad. She pushed through her grief for two years, for my sake, but when my dad's death anniversary approached, she made the decision to move.

It was continuous back-and-forth arguments between me and my mother. I didn't want to move. I didn't want to leave behind my old life and start a new one. I didn't want to leave behind my friends, my childhood home, and the thousands of memories I had made there.

But I made the sacrifice for my mother. I agreed and within days we were on the road, heading for our new home. The flight was long but the drive from the airport to Forks wasn't. It was a little over four hours. My mom had promised, I would still be able to see my friends back home. But I knew that wasn't going to happen. I knew eventually, me and my friends would lose touch, all of them busy with their own lives.

On the drive to Forks, my mom continuesly shot me worried looks. She knew I wasn't happy. She felt guilty for making me move. But she knew if she stayed in Phoenix, she would have lost her mind.

She reached out, placing a gentle hand on my thigh."This is going to be good, Ana." She assured softly as her gaze remained on the quiet stretch of road ahead of her. She patted my thigh before her hand returned to the steering wheel, and she shot me another glance.

My head was resting against the window, staring out at the trees that whirled past us, creating a blur of green and brown."For me or you?"I asked softly, my gaze never diverting from the window.

My mom shot another glance at me, her eyebrows slowly knitting together. "For both of us." She replied with an assuring tone to her voice, reaching out to run a hand through her brown hair as a soft sigh slipped from her lips.

I glanced at my mother, my lips tugged into a frown. I wasn't angry with my mother for wanting to move. I was just upset and frustrated with the situation."You're moving to a town where you know people."I muttered softly before shaking my head. "I'm not."

"I haven't been in Forks for years." My mother replied with a shake of her head. She was still a young woman, newly married and a new mother when she and my father had decided to move from Forks. They had no remaining family, so nothing ever brought them back to the small town again. "I hardly think my chances of running into someone I know, is going to be good." She insisted.

"Why come here then?" I questioned as I looked at my mother, my head tilting to the side as I raised my eyebrows. "Why not stay where we know people?"

My mom was silent for a second, her eyes on the road ahead of her. Her eyebrows were tightly knitted together, her forehead creased and a frown tugged at her lips. "Because...it hurts being there, knowing he's not." She replied softly.

I silently stared at my mother for a second before I turned my head to the window, looking back out at the trees again."It's going to hurt all the same here."I replied softly as I crossed my arms over my chest.

"Can you just try to give this place a chance?" My mother asked, and the pleading tone in her voice made my heart ache.

Me and my mom had always had a special bond. Not only was she my mother, but my best friend. I knew I could always tell my mother anything, I could talk to her about anything. She was always there for me, and I was always there for her. Now more than ever we needed each other. It was just the two of us now.

I didn't want to upset my mother any further with the conversation, so I turned to her with a small smile on my face. "Do they have like a cool small-town diner?" I asked as I raised my eyebrows.

My mother let out a soft chuckle as she nodded her head. "They have a small town diner." She confirmed before glancing over at me and shaking her head. "Although, I would not describe it as cool."

"I'll see the diner, and then maybe I'll give the place a chance," I replied as I looked ahead at the road in front of us, my smile growing as I nodded my head. I would give Forks a chance, for my mother's sake.

"That's good enough for me." My mom replied. She was silent for a second as her gaze flicked to the dark skies stretched out above us."You'll like the weather." She commented, knowing I held a special place in my heart for rainy weather.

My eyes shot up to the sky, pressing my forehead against the window as a small smile remained on my lips. "Is it always gloomy?"I asked softly, my gaze remaining on the sky.

My mom nodded her head in confirmation."Very gloomy." She replied, barely remembering a day in Forks where the sun had shined and the weather was nice and warm.

We drove for a few more minutes before we passed a sign that said we were entering Forks. I stared at the sign, my head still resting against the window."Forks." I repeated softly as I lifted my head from the window and shifted in my seat, sitting up straight. We passed a small diner and I stared at it before glancing at my mother. "That the diner?" I questioned.

"Yeah." She replied with a nod of her head, her eyes drifting around as we drove further into the quiet town. "Wow, it hasn't changed at all. None of it has." She muttered softly.

I glanced over at my mother, sensing the nostalgia from a mile away."Just, don't cry." I teased as a grin tugged at my lips when my mom playfully rolled her eyes.

"Oh, not even a few tears?"She questioned as she shot me a quick glance, raising her eyebrows as a small smile tugged at her lips. I let out an amused scoff as I shook my head at my mother. We drove in silence for a few seconds, both of us taking in the small town. "After we get settled into the house, we can go to the diner for dinner." She spoke up as we turned down a street, pulling up to a small two-story house right near the end of the street.

I looked at the white house. It was small, but still bigger than the apartment we have been living in for the past two years. "Is this it?"I asked as I looked back at my mother who drove into the short driveway.

"Yeah." My mom confirmed with a nod of her head as she turned off the car's engine, glancing at me as she unbuckled her safety belt."Tomorrow we can go for a drive and I can show you where I used to live." She suggested, and I could see the excited glint in my mother's eyes.

"I'd like that." I confirmed with a nod of my head as I unbuckled my safety belt as well, glancing over at my mother as I tucked my dark brown hair behind my ear."Just no tears." I warned with a small smile before climbing out of the car.

I rounded the car to my mother's side, my eyes on the house as I waited for my mom to climb out of the car. The soft slam of a car door pulled my attention back to my mother. We shared a smile that was interrupted by a cop car pulling up to the curb.

"Barely step foot into this place and you're already in trouble, mom?"I asked teasingly as she looked over at the man who climbed out of the car, dressed in his uniform. His dark brown hair was styled neatly, and a neatly trimmed mustache covered the space between his nose and lips.

A smile tugged at my mother's lips as the man approached. She recognized the friend from her past, from a long time ago."Charlie, is that you?" She questioned as she approached him, arms crossed loosely over her chest.

"In the flesh."He replied as he raised his arms out by his side. My mom closed the space between them, wrapping her arms around the man as they embraced for a brief second. "How long has it been?" He questioned as he pulled her at arm's length, still holding onto each other.

"A good few years."My mom replied as her smile turned sad, and she gave Charlie's arm a squeeze before pulling away and taking a step back. "Seventeen." She replied with a soft sigh. She eyed Charlie's uniform for a second before raising her eyebrows playfully. "You not too old to be Chief?" She questioned.

"Still got a good few years in me." He replied with a soft chuckle, shaking his head at my mom as he placed his hands on his hips. His gaze drifted towards me where I stood a few steps behind my mother, watching the two with curiosity in my eyes.

My mom followed his line of sight and smiled as her gaze landed on me. She beckoned me forward with a wave of her hand, wrapping an arm around me when I was next to her."Charlie, this is my daughter, Anastasia."She introduced me to Charlie, the man I had met a few times when I was still a newborn. "Ana, Charlie used to be one of my best friends." She informed me.

"It's nice to meet you."I greeted politely as I smiled at Charlie, reaching a hand out to him.

"Likewise," Charlie replied with a nod of his head, returning my smile as he took my hand and gave it a brief shake before pulling away again. His gaze returned to my mom again and he raised his eyebrows. "What happened to having a whole soccer team?" He asked, remembering fondly how teenage Eleanor always boosted about having a lot of children when she was older.

My mom let out a scoff as she shook her head."Ana had colic, so that boat sailed a very long time ago."She replied as she gave me a pointed side-eyed glance and I responded with a lighthearted roll of my eyes. "How's Bella and Rene?" She asked as her gaze returned to Charlie.

Charlie's lips pulled into a tight line and his gaze diverted from my mom."Me and Rene separated a while ago, Bella wanted to live with her mother." He explained as a soft sigh slipped from his lips."Now I only see her once a year."He explained before his gaze returned to my mom, and something in his eyes saddened. "I'm...I'm sorry to have heard about Luke."

Her head tilted slightly as a sad smile tugged at her lips. Tears formed in her eyes and Charlie stepped forward again, wrapping his arms around her. He comforted her with the utmost sincerity before pulling away again, right as an old red truck pulled up behind Charlie's cop car.

"Is that who I think it is?"My mom asked as she looked over at the truck, immediately recognizing the man inside. A young tanned boy with long black hair stepped out of the truck, pulling a wheelchair from the back before rounding the truck, helping an older man into the chair. "Billy Black." She spoke with a big smile as the young boy rolled the man towards us.

I glanced at my mother, realizing he was another friend from her past. I bumped my mother's shoulder with my own before leaning into her ear."How are you feeling about your chances now?" I questioned, referring to her comment about running into someone she knew.

She shot me a small smile as she rolled her eyes before she and Charlie made their way over to the man in the wheelchair."Billy." She greeted as she reached a hand out, placing it gently on his shoulder.

"Eleanor." He greeted with a nod of his head, reaching up to place a hand over her own. "Look at you, haven't aged a day." He complimented and my mom chuckled as she shook her head at him.

As the three began conversing, catching up on things that had happened since my mom had been in town, the young boy approached me, giving me a friendly smile."Hi." He greeted as he came to stand in front of me, his hands shoved into his grey hoodie pockets. "I'm Jacob."

"Anastasia, but you can just call me Ana," I replied, returning his friendly smile as I loosely crossed my arms over my chest.

Jacob stared at me silently for a second. He stared at me like he was to the near point of being awe-struck. His eyes darted around my face, taking in every feature.

"Is this your first time in Forks?" He asked as his head tilted to the side, his friendly smile never once faltering for a second.

I pursed my lips as I nodded my head."It is actually." I confirmed. "Except if you count when I was a newborn," I added with a shrug of my shoulders. My time in Forks I'd never remember, so for me, this was my first time in the small town. I only spent a couple of weeks in Forks anyway when I was a newborn.

Jacob hummed as he nodded along with me."Are you going to Forks High?" He asked as he raised his eyebrows at me.

"Yeah," I confirmed as I nodded my head again. A gleam of hope slipped into my eyes as I looked at Jacob. "Are you going there too?" I asked.

He shook his head, taking note of how my hope deflated."I go to school on the reservation." He explained as he pursed his lips, giving me a slightly apologetic look.

"Oh, that's too bad. Would've been nice to know at least one person." I muttered softly as my lips pouted out into a frown.

"Well, we could always hang out after school." He suggested, not wanting to let the opportunity of getting close to me, slip through his fingers. "I wouldn't mind showing you around." He added with a slight shrug of his shoulders as he gave me a small smile.

"I'd like that."I agreed, returning his smile as I nodded my head, watching as Jacob's smile grew and a glint entered his dark eyes.

There was a little more talking from both the younger and older groups before the men left so that me and my mother could settle into our home. The moving truck had already been and dropped off our things, which the realtor had let them take inside. We unpacked a few of the necessities before driving down to the diner we had passed while entering Forks.

"Jacob seems nice."My mom commented, sitting across from me, cutting up a steak, and taking a bite before she glanced over at me.

"Yeah." I agreed with a nod of my head, dusting off the crumbs of french fries on my hands before grabbing my milkshake, and taking a few sips of the thick chocolate."He offered to show me around town a little." I informed my mother.

A smile tugged at my mom's lips as she quirked an eyebrow at me."Like a date?" She questioned.

I rolled my eyes as I shook my head, taking another sip of my milkshake before I replied."No, like a tour guide." I commented

"Ana." She half-heartedly scolded me, even though the comment had the corners of her lips turning slightly up.

"It's not a date."I denied with a shake of my head before taking a bite of my burger, humming softly. I held a hand over my food-stuffed mouth. "The food is actually really good," I spoke, my voice nearly muffled by the food.

She hummed in agreement as she cut another piece of her steak."Yeah, it didn't used to be."She commented as she shook her head. "It's a nice surprise." She said as she took a bite of her steak.

I swallowed my food, placing my burger down on the plate as I raised my eyebrows at my mother."Your nice surprise and my nice surprise are not the same." I commented as I popped a french fry into my mouth, watching my mother roll her eyes in response.

The weekend flew by, with unpacking and tours around town. Jacob showed me a few places, but there wasn't much to show except woods and a small beach that was a few minutes away from our house. My mom showed me where she grew up, reliving all her fond memories as we drove around town, telling me every story of what she got up to as a young girl.

It was a bittersweet start to our new life.
