Error

It was darker than the void ever was. It's was quieter than a windless night in the middle of concrete nothingness. Only the ringing in my ears. Even my own body was silent. Tears and memories shook my body. I was confused and alone in a see of moving black, darker than knowledge could comprehend.

I wish I had a chance to say goodbye. I wish I could have kept my promises. I wish it hadn't ended like this.

I covered my eyes with my hands and wept into them silently. Sobs wracked through my body and I grit my teeth. Sobbing wouldn't make the truth go away. I'm dead and I can't go back. It was something I'd have to accept.

But I still cried, I still mourned over the loss of those I'd never meet again. My shoulders shook as I cried out in pain. My heart thudded against my chest painfully.

Tears....
And more tears...
And more...
And more...
And more...

Foolish, selfish tears that were undeserving of a purpose. Undeserving of mourning a fate that couldn't be reversed. Hot, burning, treacherous tears. I sobbed, alone in my fate. Alone in the void.

Suddenly a cold hand closed over my shoulder and I jumped away, alarmed by the sudden touch. My body rocked back to the nonexistent ground, and I looked up. An image of a familiar friend, but morphed and almost unrecognizable. His skin was black and malformed, and his eyes were just rings of blue, yellow and red. In red letters the word Error littered his body. He wore a dark blue hood over a red shirt, black shorts with a blue stripe and a pair of black slippers.

My heart shuttered as I reached towards him. "S-Sans?" I asked.

The skeleton look-alike moved back and looked at me quizzingly. "Y-You're a-a g-glitch in the s-system." He said curtly.

I felt my heart drop as I looked at the copy. "What?" I asked.

"Y-You were a m-mistake... A d-defect..."

I felt anger in my gut as I shouted at the imposter. "Who are you?! Why do you look like Sans?!" I snapped.

He made eye contact and held out a hand. "E-Error!Sans." He said simply.

I shook his hand and looked at him wearily. "And why do you look like Sans?" I pressed.

"I-I am S-Sans, j-just not t-the o-one you m-met."

I raised a brow. "You're not my Sans. So why are you here?" I asked.

"Y-You need t-to res-set." He said simply.

"Reset?"

He nodded. "Y-You made y-yourself imp-portant to Undertale. Y-You are n-necessary to the t-timeline."

I raised a brow then laughed. "I'm dead you idiot. I'm not going back anytime soon." I sneered.

He shook his head. "Y-You are n-not completely d-dead. Y-Your soul r-remains in Undertale, s-safe."

"So? What's that to me?"

Error!Sans snickered. "Y-You're naive. D-Do you r-remember h-how Frisk c-can reset?"

I nodded. "Well yeah, duh."

"Y-You have t-the s-sans ability b-because o-of your g-glitch."

"My glitch?" I asked, my handing fluttering to my chest like I knew. "Do you mean-"

"H-Humans can n-not sustain witho-out s-souls. Y-You a-are a g-glitch in n-nature."

My heart skipped a beat. "I'm literally a freak of nature?" I laughed dryly.

"Y-Yes, exactly." Error!Sans confirmed.

I sat in silence a moment before speaking again. "If I don't have a soul, how could I use the resets?" I asked.

"Y-You have m-more p-power than a-average h-humans. You c-can res-set your l-life, w-without Ch-Chara."

My eyes widened and I jumped to my feet. "I can go back to a normal life? How? How is it even possible?" I asked.

"T-The love y-you lacked u-up till n-now c-concentrated i-into a pure c-cluster that based y-your s-soul. W-When y-you finally l-learned love, i-it c-came with p-power as w-well."

A smile painted my face. "I can go back! Tell me how, please tell me." I begged.

As I begged, Error!Sans gave me a disapproving look but led me away into the darkness. I followed close behind him as he led me through the choking black. Suddenly, large white buttons appeared before me and I squealed.

I looked at the buttons in curiosity as Error!Sans laughed. "J-Jumpy?" He teased.

I ignored him and examined the selection. Text appeared above it and I read it accordingly.

You can't give up yet! We need you!
Stay determined!

My gaze darted between it and the buttons.

[Continue] [Reset]

"C-Choose to c-continue a-and y-you w-will a-appear where y-you last were. F-For y-your case, in H-Hotlands. E-very one w-will remember what happened and any d-damage done will r-remain until i-it's fixed. Choose to r-reset and n-no one w-will remember t-this. B-But y-you will h-have to b-befriend everyone a-again. A-and they m-may n-not be the same."

My hand hovered above the two, unsure of a decision. If I continued, my friends would still remember the horror of what I'd done. Unless my magic was enough Toriel would remain dead. But they would remember the good things, the times I broke down and needed them. I wouldn't have to tell them again what I fell victim to.

If I reset, I could lose people. I would never be able to recreate this to have the same relationships with no ties to the demonic soul that tried to claim me. They'd all forget, leaving me a clean sheet, but I'd have to bear the memories alone. The nightmares just that, nightmares. Not horrid memories that someone could sympathize to, just dreams. I couldn't guarantee the same relations I had formed.

I closed my eyes and slapped my hand down over my choice, lights shooting from the option in springs. I heard an amused grunt from behind me. "I'm surprised." Error!Sans cooed.

You are filled with Love.

P.o.V. Sans
I walked back to my home with Cherry's soul in a container I snagged from Alphys' lab. It swung beautifully in the lighting, my heart sinking. This was her soul. This was the very thing she looked for, for so long, just to have it ripped away seconds after finding it.

My torn slippers crunched numbly on the snow as I walked through Snowdin to my wrecked home. The door hung off its hinges as I entered. Frisk kneeled, weeping over his mother's ashes. Undyne was cradling Alphys in a tender hold as Alphys cried. Papyrus had retreated to a corner to cry, Mettaton, as usual now a days, was nearby to comfort him. As soon as my foot touched the doorway, their heads snapped towards me.

"Did you do it?" Frisk asked. "Did you save Cherry?"

His pleading voice broke my resolve to hold my tears as I entered. My knees became weak and I fell, Cherry's soul lighting the space in front of me. I heard gasps as they looked from the soul to me, then back again.

"Sans I-" Undyne started to speak but couldn't finish her statement.

"Cherry! No!" Frisk cried, crawling over to the container. He watched the soul swirl around in horror. "She did it." He sobbed. "She broke her promise."

I shook my head and fluorescent tears streamed down my face. "I couldn't save her, s-she's.... gone..." I croaked.

Frisk curled into my lap and cried, holding the soul against his chest. I let him cry in my lap, wanting to be as much help as possible. It was at least an attempt to make up for my failure. "I'm sorry Cherry." I whispered, my hand falling over the soul.

It seemed to pulsate under my touch and I pulled back immediately. It glowed at the touch of someone, quickly starting to glow more and more. "Sans what did you do to her soul?" Undyne asked. "Why is it glowing?"

"I don't know. It just i-"

A burst sent all of us back a few meters.
The soul expanded and molded into a shape of pure little. Glares blocked anything possibly lude, but I recognized the small frame. "Cherry?" I asked.

The light turns towards me a moment, before turning towards the pile of ashes. I panicked. "Cherry don't! We don't know what-"

But it was too late. The figure that I was 95% sure was Cherry, leaned towards the ashes and prodded them lightly. They swirled at her touch, making their own form. Toriel reappeared from the ash and the light seamed to dim. Toriel was as dazed and as confused as us, as the light form of Cherry stepped back and fell over.

Papyrus lunged to catch her since I had Frisk in my lap. The light died down and I heard Papyrus yelp. "BROTHER! GIVE ME YOUR JACKET, THE HUMAN IS NUDE!" Papyrus announced, turning to show me Cherry. Though she laid comfortably, I averted my eyes and happily removed my jacket.

"Get her into one if the rooms now. I'm pretty sure that Cherry just pulled off a reset and revival in one." I instructed.

Papyrus rushed upstairs with Cherry in his arms, my jacket being her only cover. Toriel was on the floor, cradling a headache. Frisk ran from me to Toriel and wrapped her in a hug. "Mom!" He cried.

"My c-child. What h-happened?" She stuttered.

Frisk started to explain as I started to follow Papyrus. When I entered his room, it was completely quiet as I entered. Papyrus sat at the side of the bed, tucking the blanket under her chin. He looked at me with worry.

"Brother, I'm confused..." He said softly. "We saw... Cherry was gone. What happened?"

I'd never heard him so soft spoken. "I don't know Paps. I-"

Cherry groaned and rolled over in the bed, her eyes moving under her lids. Papyrus jumped up suddenly and looked at Cherry. "CHERRY! ARE YOU-"

I clamped a hand on Papyrus' mouth. "Bro, quiet. You'll wake her up." I hissed, motioning for quiet.

Papyrus nodded and turned towards Cherry. "Brother, when will she wake up?"

I sighed. "I don't know Paps. I don't know."

Nobody's P.o.V.
Three months. For three months, they waited for Cherry to wake up. Life had returned to a full repeat once again, Cherry's situation affecting a few. Alphys took the girl into her lab, to monitor her.

Life continued for many, except a few. Sans visited her everyday, watching her lay in a bed like she was merely asleep. Toriel visited only on weekends, her weekdays teaching at the very school her child attended. Frisk visited whenever possible, reading Cherry stories while she slept.

Alphys watched over her, making sure she remained normal. Undyne often visited, but only ever stayed a few minutes. Mettaton would check in daily with Alphys, and made sure the world knew what was happening with Underground's second star.

That became routine. The world knew, but didn't care. Those who knew her could only visit while Cherry... Cherry looked for them.

Cherry was a glitch, a problem in the world. It had been explained she could return to the world, but only if she found it. She could hear her friends, feeling them take her hands in theirs, or embrace her in a hug, but her eyes would never open. It took three months. Three months to see anything within her mind. Three months to wake up...
