Chapter 4

Xaviers POV

My mind was reeling as I mentally scolded myself for blurting out such a fundamentally ridiculous question.  I'd said it now and thought rather than open my mouth again and take a gamble on what string of nonsense might fall out next that I should instead commit to the question, maybe a simple question like this would put her at ease.  We needed to become acquainted after all and a name was the start of most social interactions. My thoughts continued like this, me trying to justify why I was so insanely nervous and at  a complete loss for words sitting in front of this girl. Foolishly hoping that she could answer all of the questions which had been on a constant loop inside my head for the past six days.

The girl didn't answer straight away. Instead a look of which I could only describe as pure terror marred her perfect features. Her complexion paled to a ghastly opaque hue of white, her cheeks which had been flushed a light shade of rose dissipated and the bruises slicing through her otherwise flawless face had lightened several shades from a deep offensive plum to an elegant violet. Her eyes widened, glazing over as tears pooled threatening to spill over her long black eyelashes.

After what seemed like a lifetime, but in reality must have only been a few agonising moments, she parted her lips clearly struggling to form words eventually managing to speak.

"I don't know"

Her voice was quiet and unsteady, it was clear that the physical process of saying those words had been a strain on her unused vocal chords. It was even more clear that she was utterly petrified of the words that had fallen from her throat. The tears which had flooded her eyes began to gently trickle out of the corner of her eye, her horizontal position not allowing them to flow fast and freely.

I wanted to comfort her, I wanted to tell her that it would be okay, that her mind was just groggy from being unconscious for such a long time but something inside me just knew that this girl, this beautiful broken girl, had lost her name and undoubtedly that wasn't the only thing that she had lost.

Just as I was about to try and say something else a nurse bustled into the room, a short, stout woman with cropped auburn hair rushed to her bedside.

"Hello Sweetie, nice to see you're finally awake." the nurse had a thick Scottish accent and though her words were gentle, the harsh dialect tainted their sincerity. She adjusted a few dials on the medical equipment and went on to introduce herself.

"My names Eileen, I'll be your nurse this morning, now can you tell me darlin' on a scale of 1-10, how much pain you're currently experiencing?"

The girl seemed to consider this for a moment, shifting in the bed slightly, seemingly trying to assess the sensations coursing through her body before finally squinting her eyes together as she hesitantly announced that she was currently at a, very noble and what I was sure must be a huge under-exaggeration, six on the pain scale.

"Okay darlin' I'm just going to adjust your bed here and sit you up a little, then I'll help you have a sip of water before I adjust your drip here to try and ease some of that pain." Eileen then grabbed the remote from the side of the bed and began to inch it up steadily and carefully, clearly trying to avoid any extra unnecessary discomfort to her. Once the bed had reached a slightly obtuse angle she stopped, placing the control back into its holder and returned her attention to my girl.

Her face was contorted, her lips had pushed together to form a taut straight line, she was clearly trying to refrain from calling out in agony. She composed her features looking expectantly at the nurse who was now pouring a glass of water into a cup, Eileen added a straw to the cup to allow for easier access and brought it to the girls lips.

"Now just take a few small sips, we don't want to shock your system too much okay sweetie." The girl nodded ever so slightly, a gesture which I would have missed if I hadn't been watching her so intently, before she accepted the drink, pursing her cherry red lips around the straw before taking a small hesitant sip. She then glanced at Eileen as if asking for her permission to take another sip to which the nurse inclined her head slightly, a warm smile stretching out onto her wrinkled, fleshy face, letting her know it was okay to continue drinking.  Eileen held the water steady for her for a few moments longer as she took a one final sip before letting her head fall back against the supportive pillow behind her, clearly exhausted from participating in this simple task.

Before the plump, Scottish lady vacated the room she did as she promised and released a little pain medication from the drip, my girls face simultaneously relaxing slightly as she did so.

"I'll be back in just a tick with the Doctor darlin' you just try and relax for a few moments." Eileen smiled at the girl reassuringly whilst very gently offering her hand a very slight squeeze.

She then turned her gaze to me, her cropped auburn hair flopping around her face, a scowl suddenly forming when she reached my eyes.

"And you need to make yourself scarce for when the Doctor arrives boy, you can sit in the waiting room as I know its pointless for me to ask you to leave but don't you be coming in and bothering her until I say were done." Clearly Eileen had seen me haunting the girls bedside and I'm sure had been privy to all of the hospital gossip of which I had caught snippets here and there. She was obviously not a fan of mine and like most of the staff here was wary of my presence especially considering the troubling circumstances of the accident, the girls identity and my seemingly divine powers of healing.

By now most of the hospital staff had merely assumed that the paramedics on the scene had made a mistake being that one of them was a newer member of the team, I'd heard whispers of an internal investigation. That the girl had been wrongly pronounced dead and that someone would be facing some serious consequences for this huge mistake, in which life saving procedures had been withdrawn to early. But just as I knew and surely everyone else was aware of though were too afraid to admit, she had been dead and somehow whatever I had done had brought her back.  But as with all things beyond human comprehension people rushed to put blame onto others, trying to rationalise it with human error. Something I had initially tried to do but had quickly disregarded as I was completely certain that something inexplicable and beyond all realms of sanity had happened on the roadside that night.  Something that some might describe as magic.

On that note I stood up, my bones cracking as I stretched to my full height of six foot three, my muscles aching from being hunched in the small chair for so long. I cast one last glance at the girl who had now closed her eyes, still slightly upright in the bed, her hands resting limply at her sides, before I exited the room as per Eileen's instructions escorting myself to the waiting area down the hall. The familiar sting of discomfort filled my core as the distance increased between myself and the room where my girl lay, now alone awaiting on the arrival of a Doctor to surely check her over, explain the extent of her injuries and I could only assume wanting to get to the root of who this girl was.

'My girl', it wasn't lost on me that I had now subconsciously added 'my'  to the inner dialogue that tumbled around my brain. Somehow it felt natural to refer to her as that, I needed to protect her, I needed to support her and more than anything I needed to be close to her as the initial sting from the loss of her proximity had now grown into an unbearable burn, filling my entire body and somehow I knew that this wasn't just in my head, my mind was not playing tricks on me. Being away from her caused me genuine physical pain and now I had accepted that this was completely crazy, I was ready to find out what the hell was happening.  I was sure of only one thing, that something out of the ordinary was happening here and it was about time that I embraced this fact and allowed my brain to explore the reality that something divine and spectacular was happening.

AN-

So this chapter is my longest one yet! Hopefully it wasn't too boring as I had to get some interactions with the hospital out of the way to try and add a bit of realism into the situation. It would be pretty ludicrous if the hospital staff just left them to it and let them chat away after shes just woken up after six days of being unconscious!

Anyway I hope you are enjoying my story and a huge thanks for reading this far! I hope you continue to read as I am really enjoying writing this!

Any feedback would be absolutely amazing and I will be very thankful to anyone who takes the time to say anything about my little book here!

Do you think the story is flowing nicely and how do you think the character development is going? Also if anyone has any questions so far or thinks I need to clarify anything further I would love to answer you...so long as it doesn't reveal any spoilers of course! ;)

Thanks a Million!

J :)
