Sombody Once Said Money Can't Buy Happiness, But I Disagree

I had told my mom what was going on, so she agreed to change the custody schedule a bit so I could sleep at my dads, and have her pick me up for school on weekdays. That way I didn't have to go back and forth with Greg stuck awkwardly at my dad's while I was at my mom's. It was just something small that I appreciated.

The day Greg's blood test results came back was a big one. It was the day he could go and pick up his first testosterone prescription. I learned over this whole ordeal that there were different levels you could take. If you were non binary, you could get a lower dosage, so less than the regular cis guy. Greg however wanted to be as close to cis as possible, so he got a regular amount.

"I'm supposed to stick this in my thigh I think? Is that what the person said?" He asked, bending over in front of my mirror, in nothing but a big t-shirt and some boxers.

I watched from my spot on my bed. "Are you asking for help?"

He looked up at me and frowned playfully. "No I've got this."

After figuring out exactly where he was supposed to stick the needle (I ended up helping) he took his first shot. After words he got all excited and my heart couldn't take it, he was adorable.

"Now that you're on T we can both take our meds together." I mused, shaking my little week-long pill organizer of anxiety medications.

"Romantic." He rolled his eyes at me.

He was still raring at himself in the mirror. He turned to me suddenly, grinning.

"I can't wait for my voice to get deeper." He shrieked. "Then I'm gonna start to grow facial hair! I'm gonna grow a beard. Do you think I should grow a beard?"

"I think you'd be dashing as heck with a beard." I admitted, raising an eyebrow playfully at him.

"Aw heck yeah. I'm gonna grow a beard." He smirked.

"Greg, you know what this means?" I gasped. "We have to take pictures!"

"Yes!" He agreed, posing in front on of the mirror.

I snapped a few of them. "You realize the only pictures you'll have too look back on are you doing a Lady Ga Ga pose in your underwear."

"My manly underwear." He retorted. "I'm so happy I live with you."

"Mm, me too." I agreed, putting down my phone and walking forward to kiss him.

He wrapped his arms around my neck, and let his fingers drift through my hair as we kissed. I picked him up and twirled him around, he broke the kiss to laugh before we both fell back on my bed. He stared at me for a bit and I stared back, just taking a moment to appreciate his eyes.

"Not to ruin the mood, but has your family tried to contact you at all?" I asked.

He bit his lip and looked away. "Yeah. My sister's been silent but I've gotten a few nasty texts from my mom and dad."

"Did you try to talk to them?" I continued, reaching for his hand so I could curl my fingers into his.

"I sent them the middle finger emoji and blocked their numbers." He explained, smiling slightly.

"Savage." I nodded.

"Don't date this conversation." Greg snorted.

We waited in silence for a bit. Greg brought up the next topic.

"What are on a do when school starts again? It's only a few days." He sighed. "This hasn't been the most relaxing spring break."

I shot straight up suddenly. "School! It just occurred to me, do you wear your binder to gym?"

Greg immediately looked away and wrung his hands.

"Gregory..." I groaned.

"I didn't used too." He tried to explain. "Um, it's kind of embarrassing."

I just sat there. "You know you don't have to tell me anything if you don't want too."

"Yeah but you need to know so you can fuss over me. So I used to just wear a sports bra but uh, after I tried to come out as trans the first time my parents sort of took away anything that I could used to flatten my chest, including those."

"Okay you're parents have done a lot of stupid things, but that one takes the cake." I grumbled.

He rolled his eyes. "I know."

"That can't be healthy." I continued.

"It isn't, I uh, I hang back a lot because I can't take deep enough breaths while I'm wearing it. I passed out once-"

"Greg!" I exclaimed. "Oh my God I remember that."

He grimaced. "That wasn't fun to explain to the nurse."

"Do we need to go shopping again?" I realized.

"For bras? Ugh." He shut down the idea immediately.

"Think of them as comfy binders that allow to actually freaking breathe." I raised an eyebrow at him.

He folded his arm and rolled his eyes. "Fine, but only because it's you. Understand I wouldn't be doing this with anyone else."

"Understand I wouldn't be doing this with anyone else." I pointed out.

He let out a slight pissed off, "touché."

Thirty minutes laters we were in the lingerie section at a Macy's. I was surrounded by the overwhelming amount of underwear, responsibility, and the suffocating feeling that this was the last place I was supposed to be. I figured that's probably how Greg felt, only worse, so I suppressed the urges and tried to ignore the stares from mothers and their daughters wondering what I was doing.

"Can I help you two?" A woman floated towards us. "Are you here for your girlfriend?"

Greg flinched like he'd been slapped, and opened his mouth but I beat him to it. "He's my boyfriend ma'am."

She hesitated, then her eye widened. "Oh! I see. Are you looking for binders? We don't have that many but I bet I could pull them out for you!"

"No thank you." Greg said quickly, and quietly "I'm just here for sports bras."

"I was actually talking with another trans man just a few weeks ago and he gave me some great recommendations. I can show you those if you like?" She offered.

"That would be...great actually." Greg said slowly, following her as she walked off.

I waited a little ways off from the men's dressing room for Greg to come out (ha) and while that was conspiring, I got a text. It wasn't a number I recognized.

I blinked in realization and suddenly payed a lot more attention to the screen.

I smiled at the screen. You know, maybe Arthur wasn't all that bad. Maybe all he need was a little kindness.

"You won't believe what just happened." I told Greg once he reappeared. "Arthur Laurens texted me."

"He did? After you'd had your little heart to heart? What did he say?" Greg asked.

"He said he thought about it a lot, and he thinks he's bi." I marveled.

"That's great." He nodded.

"He also might want to join our queer squad." I added.

"That's debatable, but I supposed it wouldn't terrible." Greg shrugged.

We were heading off to the checkout and Greg was still in a sour mood. It wasn't too bad anymore anymore though. Not like when we first walked in. Arthur's story had lightened his mood a lot.

"I can't believe you convinced me to this this." He sighed.

"Well I care about you, that's all. You want to get anything else while we're here?" I offered. "Cologne or something?"

He gave me a side eye. "Yes, why are you offering?"

I shrugged. "I figured we'd balance it out our cart."

He looked noticeable happier once we went to the men's section and picked out a shirt, and a packet of boxers. It was fun to watch him, especially this morning. They say money can't by happiness, but the way Greg acted once he got his first shot looked pretty happy to me.

"What a way to spend my first day on T." He observed as we waited at the checkout.

"We should go get ice cream or something." I offered.

He shook his head in amusement. "Why am I getting the feeling you're trying to spoil me."

"Because you deserve it." I complimented, kissing his forehead.

He blushed and pushed me away playfully. The cashier rolled her eyes at us.

"Oh crud, I completely forgot." I realized, not entirely sure how to say this.

"What?" Greg asked, about to give the lady a credit card.

"Do you need anything for when you...you know?" I felt my face heart up.

Greg frowned at me. "When I what?"

"Surf the crimson wave, shark week or whatever." I tried again.

Greg stared at me for a few seconds in disbelief before he burst out laughing. I coughed and tried to retain whatever dignity I had left.

"Oh my God." He wheezed. "Are you? Are talking about my period?"

I nodded slowly. He snorted again and started wheezing, leaning again the counter of the annoyed looking cashier.

"I'm sorry, but you just made this whole trip worth it, you're so adorable when you have no clue what to say." He gasped, slapping his knee.

"Thanks." I raised an eyebrow at him.

"It's my pleasure. Really. Do you have anymore replacements for menstrual cycle or is it just those two? I'm so curious." He cackled, enjoying me suffering.

"Ha ha." I laughed dryly. "Are you going to pay or do I have too?"

"No I'm going to do it. This credit card is still hooked up to my parents so I'm going to make them pay for all this. It's honestly the least I can do." He rolled his eyes.

He snorted a few more times as we walked out of the store.

"Seriously though? Because I'd be willing to-" I started.

"No! No. Geeze Micah. At least not right now. I'll just ask Julia." He assured. "It's not like it's something she hasn't done before."

"That's good, but still you know I'd do it."

He raised an eyebrow. "You'd need to drive to the store, and you don't know how."

I almost tripped. "Crap."

He snorted again. "I can believe I just heard you say that."

"Okay we can shut up absolutely that now." I laughed, internally sweating.

"No, absolutely not. I've finally found something that makes you blush, I'm never shutting up about it." He smirked.

I smiled, oh dear.
