Chapter 10: Rage

The light from the sealing light that I'd forgotten to turn off hit on my face, and I looked up through the window into Death City. I hadn't realized just how big the academy was until now; the fact that there was enough room for the student apartments, the classrooms, lunch room, balconies and et cetera, was incredible.

Skye was jumping around the room, scratching at the closed door. I sat up, stretching and sighing a little. It was Wednesday now, and when I looked at my clock, I had woken up a little before six. The sun was rising outside, and I took a second to look at the shifting colors and clouds.

I got out of bed when Skye made a pitiful squeak and opened the door. He ran out into the rest of the apartment and I turned to my closet to get dressed. I realized, after a moment of starring into the closet, that I had no clothing. I scratched my head and put of my clothing from yesterday, putting my (h/c) hair back into a ponytail with a hair tie Liz had given me. I got my jacket and shoes, and put them on.

I looked at Skye sitting next to door, his tail wagging as his intelligent blue eyes watched me. I smiled and got his leash and little jacket. I put the jacket on him and clipped the leash onto his collar. I checked my pockets, and made sure that I still had the shiny golden card that Stein had given me. I looked at it. Would it actually work or were they playing a joke on me? I guess I would find out soon enough.

As I was opening the door, I heard a buzz come from the kitchen. Skye's ears perked up as I walked to see what it was. I looked into the kitchen, and on the counter saw that there was a thin piece of metal and glass. I realized that after a second it was a cell phone. I picked up the thin device and looked at it ((congratulations. It's an iPhone 6 because that's what I have)). I pressed the front button, and the screen lit up. There were a few different text messages, and I realized that they were from my friends. I read the first one, at the bottom.

It was from Maka, and it said 'I set up you phone yesterday. Lord Death gave it to you, so make sure to say thank you. I added everyone into your contacts, and they should be spamming you right now. Maka.'

I looked at the other texts, most of them from Black Star and Patty, emojis and whatnot. I looked at the most resent text, one from two minutes ago. It was from Soul, and it read 'I woke up early. Want to meet for breakfast?'

I slid the phone open, watching as a display screen opened with multiple applications. I tapped on the one that read messages below it, and opened Soul's text. I typed back 'Okay. Meet me at the big fountain in Death City?' and hit the little send button, watching as a little sound was made and the text went through.

I waited a second before getting a reply. 'Okay. See you there.'

I smiled to myself, slipping the thin phone into my back pocket. I walked with a little jump in my step to Skye. The dog was looking at me, panting with an almost smile on his face. I took up his leash and took my key from the hook by the door. I pushed through the door, and turned and locked it. The two of us started walking down the hallway that was dead silent (pun very much intended) and got to the front doors. I looked out over the huge city, the streets barely lit by the slowly rising sun. The sun looked as if it was tired and barely dragging itself into the sky.

Skye and I started walking down the front stairs, his little form tugging me along, pulling me, so I started running down the stairs with him. We started racing each other, him much faster than I, and we made it to the bottom quickly. I was panting, and so was he, his puppy tail wagging and his eyes looking around.

We started walking into Death City, my mind somehow remembering which way to go to get to the biggest fountain in Death City. When we found it, I sat down on the edge. I let my fingers play with the water. Skye jumped up on the stone edge of the fountain and lapped the cool clear water.

"Hey." A voice said a few minutes later, and I looked up to see Soul, his face lit up with the rising sun's light. His red eyes seemed to be shimmering, beautiful in the morning. He came and sat next to me, yawning. "How are you?" he asked.

I gave him a thumbs up, blushing a little. He saw Skye, and grinned. "Who's this little guy?" he said, taking the puppy up in his arms and petting the fluff ball. "Skye?" he said, looking at the nametag. Skye started licking his face all over, his tail wagging. "I like him." He said, his red eyes looking into the dog's blue ones.

Soul pulled a little bag out from nowhere, Skye wriggling in his arms to smell the brown paper bag. "Ay, Skye." Soul said, pulling something out of the bag. He held it out to me, and I took it.

It was round, wrapped in brown paper, and when he took a similar looking thing out and unwrapped it, I saw that it was a bagel. I unwrapped mine, and looked at the warm food, the tiniest bit of steam floating off of it. "There's this one bagel shop that has awesome bagels. I picked them up before coming." He said. I smiled at him as he took a bite, I took a small bite as well. The warmth of the dough filled me and I smiled at Soul.

As we ate, he started talking and feeding Skye little bits of his breakfast. I nodded and smiled at his questions, shrugging at some. "Do you have any other clothes yet?" he asked.

I looked down at what I was wearing; the same clothes from yesterday, which were just another pair of black jeans and a t-shirt that I got from Stein. I blushed a little and shook my head 'no'.

Soul nodded, Skye licking his chin. "I'm sure that Liz and Patti would take you shopping today after school. The girls like that kind of thing." He said. I looked out toward the edge of Death City's walls, seeing the sun beginning to break over the sand dunes. The bright colors were washing over the sand that looked so far away.

When I looked back to Soul, he was looking at me. He had a slight smile playing on his lips, and his eyes looking into mine. He leaned forward, moving his hand to hold the side of my head and pull me towards him.

His lips were softer than I thought that they would be (not that I had imagined that before), and I could feel my cheeks heating up. I closed my eyes, and felt the blush go down as I kissed him back. A few seconds later, he pulled away, and I opened my eyes to look at him.

He was smiling a little bit, a small dimple in his left cheek. "I liked that." He said, laughing a little. I smiled holding my hand over my mouth while my cheeks heated up again. Soul set Skye on the ground, holding the dog's leash. "Do you want to walk for a little?" he asked, standing. I nodded.

* * *

Class was about to start, and I was sitting in the back next to Maka and James, my other friends around in the other seats. Soul was in front of me, and I watched him talk with Kid. I had Maka's textbook in front of me, trying to catch up and figure out how to skim read.

Everyone got quiet as we heard someone yelling very loudly in the hallway. I looked over at Maka, and she mouthed the words, "is that Mari?" to me. The door of the giant classroom opened, and Stein walked in. Mari came in next, hot on his heels, her voice loud with anger as she yelled at him.

"You had no right to do that to her, you stupid scientist!" she was yelling. Stein sat down at his desk in his rolling chair as Mari continued, seeming to have already listened to several minutes of this. "Doing tests just because you have a hunch? Especially for that kind of thing?" she yelled.

"Mari," Stein said in a pause. "This is why I don't tell you these kind of things." He said, lighting a cigarette.

Mari's cheeks were bright red, and I noticed that her hair had started floating a little. I felt a pulse through the room; magic. She was really, really angry about something. Mari slammed her fist into Stein's desk, and with a loud crack, it split in half down the center.

Everyone was silent and stared as papers, pens, and other things spilled out of Stein's ruined desk. The two halves fell to the fell to the floor with a boom. Mari pointed at Stein, getting in his face. He was completely calm, not saying a thing. "I don't care what the hell she is." Mari said.

There was a second of silence before Stein said, "Lord death may have other things to say, once I tell him." He said.

Mari kicked one of the pieces of broken desk, sending it skidding across the floor to hit the wall. She stormed to the door, opening it and then slamming it shut so hard that the hinges snapped with a screech, the heavy wood falling to the floor. She was already a ways down the hall, but everyone heard her shout. "I'm going to go kill something!" she raged.

The classroom was silent as Stein lifted a piece of chalk and started writing on the board. One of the students in the front raise his hand a little, and Stein cut him off before he could speak. "Anyone who asks will be cleaning up my desk."
