18: K-I-S-S-I-N-G

The next morning, Mike awakes rather confused to the sound of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell's "Ain't No Mountain High Enough".

He'd completely forgot that he'd stayed the night. Everything fully registers in his head when he feels weight on his torso, and glances towards the source of noise only to see that Goldie's alarm clock is going off loudly.

It's 7:30am, giving them about thirty minutes to get ready for school.

At first, Mike is dazed, reaching one hand to wipe at his glassy eyes. He keeps trying to wake himself up, but the warmth around him continues to lull him back into slumber.

It isn't until he glances down that things begin to click in his head.

Marigold is cuddled tightly against Mike with her hair a bit messily spread around his chest. She looks so peaceful, but he's determined to remain emotionless towards her. So after a few moments of staring at her soft features, he pushes her off himself.

The lack of warmth wakes her right up, and she sits up in a full panic, staring up at Mike's with bloodshot eyes and confusion.

"Woah, are you okay?" He croaks, his voice scratchy with morning voice.

She nods lightly, blinking quickly to draw herself awake.

"Good morning," she yawns, moving off the bed.

"Morning," Mike responds, also standing up and stretching.

He tiredly gathers the clothes Steve borrowed, and allows himself into her bathroom to change. The changing process is slow as he lazily throws clothes over his head. While he's in their, he washes his face.

Meanwhile, rather than changing into decent clothes, Goldie remains in Steve's sweatshirt. The only new item she pulls on is some skinny jeans and converse.

She's done changing before Mike comes out. While she waits, she takes this opportunity to begin doing her make up, staring into her small vanity mirror at her dark bags.

Finally, Mike comes out of the bathroom fully dressed and ready to go.

"What're you doing?" He questions boredly.

She blends her concealer in with her finger, "trying to be less ugly."

"You're not even ugly," he rolls his eyes.

She grins, continuing to fix her make up.

"Thank you, but I care to disagree," She hums, applying lipgloss as she speaks.

Mike seems a bit curious by her actions, suddenly leaned forward and paying close attention to her actions. He wonders why wearing glossy lips even makes a difference. Then, he sees how she looks when she's finished applying the gloss, and immediately understands.

Wow, he suddenly really wants to kiss her.

He swallows his nerves, turning away from her.

"It's Cherry," she grins, noticing his previous stare just in time. "You wanna taste?"

He raises a brow, confused by her question, but slowly nods his head. He doesn't even notice her devious smirk, and assumes nothing.

"Come over here," she taps the seat beside her.

He moves quickly, noticing that the clock is ticking towards 8am rather quickly. They have about two minutes before they need to get a move on.

"Are you sure it tastes like cherry?" He questions nervously.

"You'll see for yourself," she grins.

"How—"

He doesn't even get an opportunity to finish his sentence before Goldie leans forward and pulls Mike into a soft, gentle, and sweet kiss.

His eyes are wide open, while hers are shut lightly. He never pulls away, completely taken by surprise. Nonetheless, he can certainly taste the gloss now, and it's definitely not cherry. Watermelon is more probable. How can he really focus on that when her eyelashes are fluttering ticklishly against his cheek, though?

Just when he begins to kiss back softly and allow his eyes to close, a loud car horn pulls them apart.

Goldie is glowing, radiating with something Mike has never seen on a girl. Whatever it is, it's making her look absolutely beautiful.

She's blushing like crazy, quickly gathering a few things and throwing them in her backpack before fumbling to stand up.

"Uh, that's probably, um, it's probably Steve, so," she glances to Mike, who still hasn't moved, "we should probably go now."

Mike nods, gathering his own belongings dazed.

"You lied," he states, breaking the silence.

He turns and begins to walk towards her at an alarming, forgetting all about his pain and previous love.

"W-What?" She questions, stepping back nervously.

"It's not cherry," He mutters, grabbing her cheeks, "it's watermelon."

His lips crash into hers knocking the wind straight out of them both. She closes her eyes, quickly getting over her stun and kissing back.

Her arms wrap around his neck, pulling him into a deeper kiss just as a car horn honks once again. This time though, Mike ignores it. It isn't until the third honk comes around that he finally lets her go and breathes intensely.

"Woah," she mutters, trying to catch her breath.

Mike smiles, "Yeah. Woah."

Another honk.

"Shit," Marigold cusses, rushing out her room. "Steve is seriously gonna kill us."

Mike follows, his eyes suddenly widening in realization.

"Wait— Steve? We're getting a ride with Steve?" He worriedly questions. "We can't! My sister gets a ride with him! She'll know I wasn't working on a project, and and—"

"Look, Mike," she calms, walking out the front door, "it'll be fine."

He takes a deep breath, looking towards the car. Sure enough, Nancy is in the passenger seat, not even paying attention to the world around her. When she doesn't finally look up though, Mike is frozen in his spot as they make eye contact.

Nancy's jaw drops, and she glares lightly at him.

With one last swallow, Mike allows Goldie to lace her hand in his and tug him along.

He is so dead.

As they get into the car, Goldie smiles and says her good mornings, never letting go of Mike's hand.

"Mike, what the hell," Nancy scoffs, ignoring Goldie's greeting. "Does mom know you stayed at a girls house?!"

"Does mom know that you're annoying?" He retaliates, rolling his eyes. "Stay out of my business Nancy."

"I'll tell mom if you don't tell me why you were here," she smirks as Steve quietly drives.

Goldie pulls her hand away from Mike's, suddenly feeling awkward by the two siblings bickering and loud tones.

They go back and forth arguing before they finally reach the school where Mike quickly rushes out of the vehicle and slams the door behind him. Goldie scurries after him as he rushes towards their building, glancing behind her as Nancy shouts after them.

"Hey, Mike, you're not gonna get in trouble because of me are you?" She questions.

"No. It's not like you're my girlfriend or anything," he blankly states, walking into the building.

Goldie stops walking, staring off as he rushes in. Her heart breaks when she registers his words. He isn't her boyfriend, and it's seems he's back to being the same old asshole Mike she originally came to know.

She shakes off her heart break, and rushes after him, quickly pulling him to a stop.

"So that's it, huh? You're just gonna act like nothing at the house happened?" She challenges, her hand gripping tightly onto his wrist.

He stares down at her wide eyed.

"I like you, Goldie," he reassures with an amused smile. "Don't be so upset, Jeez."

She blushes, "well, shit, you just told me I wasn't your girlfriend!"

"Well, you aren't," he points out, "not yet at least.

A smile sweeps across her face and she chuckles.

"Come on, let's go find the other idiots."
