13: Okay, Time To Be Serious

Max is pissed at Mike after what happened. For once, he actually seems really guilty, and doesn't try to cover it up.

What he did was wrong, and he shouldn't have yelled.

"Would you just tell me where she lives please?" Mike begs for the third time, following after Max as she storms down the hallway.

"Why? So you can yell at her some more?!" She exclaims, continuing to stride.

Finally, Mike pulls her wrist, yanking her to a stop.

"I said I'm sorry! I didn't mean to yell like that—"

"Yeah, but you meant what you said," she scoffs, glaring at him. "Didn't you? What's the point of apologizing to her if you're only going to say, 'sorry I yelled, but I meant every word I said'. What's the point of that?!"

"I didn't mean it," he admits. "I just...look, I just want to apologize to her. Tell me where she lives?"

Max looks him the eyes, searching for some sort of hint that he's lying. When she finds nothing, she lets out a sigh and gives in.

"She lives next to me. 702 Cherry Road," She states. "You better fix this. She doesn't cry, I just want you to know that, and whatever you do, don't bring up how- how..."

Mike watches as she struggles to find the right words, confused by what she's saying.

"What? Spit it out!" He pushes, curious about what he isn't supposed to bring up.

"Don't bring up how pretty she is when she cries!" Max finally states. "Just don't."

Mike blinks, "so, you noticed it to? You noticed how weirdly pretty she looks when she cries?"

"Dude, everyone that knows her, knows that," she states while shaking her head. "It's like that's all her mom ever talks about, and Goldie really hates it. When we first met, she told me there were three rules she wanted me to follow.

1. Never talk about her crying.
2. Never call her by her full name.
3. Never talk about her dad."

Mike listens carefully to the rules, but allows his curiosity to get the best of him.

"Does she not like her dad or something?" He inquires.

"Dude, did you not just here the three rules?!" She scoffs, walking slowly beside him. "We're not supposed to talk about her dad!"

"She's not here!" He retaliates. "If I'm not allowed to talk about something, I wanna at least know why I'm not allowed to."

"Okay," Max nods. "I swear to god, you can't tell anyone this."

He nods, "Yeah, of course. My lips are sealed."

"Apparently, around last year, her dad, like, went totally berserk and did some really bad things," she states.

"What type of bad things?" Mike whispers, staring ahead of himself with slightly widened eyes.

Max seems a little hesitant about the next few things she goes to say.

"Like...he use to rape and beat her," she whispers. "It was really bad, and her mom never did anything because she was like, brainwashed or something. Her dad was super manipulative and said disgusting things..like...he'd say he liked to do best when she cried...cause she's so pretty...and...I think you get it."

Mike honestly doesn't know what to say. He didn't realize that such a normal looking girl could have such a screwed up past.

His heart sinks into his stomach, and he regrets his terrible attitude towards her.

"Jesus," he mutters. "That's terrible. Did they put the bastard in jail?"

Max, suddenly frustrated, growls.

"That's the thing! Her mom never pressed charges, and since she wouldn't testify, there wasn't enough evidence to lock him up! They just put him in jail with a probation period," She curses. "Today, Goldie told me that her dad is gonna be released soon! Can you fucking believe that?!"

"What the hell, are you serious?!" Mike blinks, "that's bullshit!"

"Tell me about," she agrees. "The only good thing her mother did was move all the way over here. Hopefully her dad won't find them. Her mom is such a broken woman, I mean she lets Goldie walk all over her now. I think she's guilty."

"Well, she should be," Mike sighs. "What kind of asshole lets their own kid go through that?"

"Yeah," Max nods. "Just...try not to talk about it around Goldie."

"Of course," Mike nods. "I've got a lot of apologizing to do."

"That you do," Max agrees.

"Yeah, well, this doesn't mean I like you now or anything," he reminds.

She chuckles, "Yeah, I figured that much."
