12: Ed Sheeran Wouldn't Treat Me Like This

Marigold decides to skip out on the whole "showing" Mr. Clarke Dustin's discovery. Instead, she spends a few minutes reorganizing her locker while contemplating when to go home.

She finds herself having dinner at the Hargrove household more often than her own as she simply can't stand her mother.

It takes a lot of time to get her locker the way she likes it. When she finally does, she shuts it and looks up just in time to see the party along with Max rushing towards the AV room.

She follows after quickly, only to have the door shut in her face.

"Party members only!" Mike shouts.

Marigold frowns in disappointment, glancing at Max who seems equally upset about the whole ordeal.

Max begins to bang on the door, not ready to give up.

"Guys? What's going on? Come on!" She shouts, knocking her hand against the door.

When she gets no response, she turns her brain into problem solving mode. Marigold watches closely as she fumbles to pull a paper clip out, and immediately knows the plan in mind. She begins to picklock the knob, and Goldie kneels to help her.

After a minute or so, they finally get the door unlocked and push it open.

Dart comes running past them, and they are soon tackled dramatically to the ground by Lucas and Dustin.

"Where'd he go?!" Lucas panics, quickly climbing off Goldie.

"What was that?!" Max questions, standing up and facing the direction it ran off in.

"Dart!" Mike responds, looking panicked.

"What?!"

"You let him escape!" Mike bellows.

"Why did you attack him?" Dustin shouts, pushing Mike in the chest.

Mike pushes past him and goes into search mode.

"Come on," he grumbles.

"Don't hurt him!" Dustin warns, "don't you hurt him!"

Goldie can see how much Dustin seems to be upset by the situation and doesn't waste time in pulling Max to help her search the building for the creature. She hope they'll get to it before Mike does.

Max goes ahead of her, while she checks one classroom just in case.

When she finds nothing, she sighs and turns to catch up to Max. Unfortunately, someone seemed to be walking in the opposite direction, bumping right into her.

"Oh, I'm sorry!" She apologizes, looking up to see an unfamiliar girl.

She has relatively short hair, and is dressed in unusual clothing. She doesn't say anything back to Goldie, but keeps walking in the direction she was going, leaving Goldie to watch in curiosity.

She shrugs it off as a visitor, and gets back to the situation at hand, catching up to Max in the boy's locker room.

"We'll get in trouble if someone catches us in here," she hums, moving things around in search of the pollywog.

"Then let's not get caught," Max responds.

A few moments pass, and suddenly Mike jumps out from behind a locker. He's holding a mop defensively in his hand, ready to attack them.

When he sees its them, he grows embarrassed by his battle cry, but covers it up with annoyance.

"What the hell are you doing?!" Max shouts, clearly frightened.

Marigold is holding her chest, her heart beating extremely hard. Maybe even a little too hard. She debates whether she should pull out her heart monitor.

"What are you doing?! Why're you in here" Mike shouts back, dropping the mop.

"Looking for dart," Max responds as if it's obvious.

"This is the boys' room!" He grumbles, glancing to Marigold.

"Yeah, So?" Max chimes.

"So you should go home!" He growls, quickly making a dash for the exit.

Marigold frowns at his tone, deciding to speak up against him before Max can. Mayfield gives her a chance to speak, getting sick of the boy's attitude faster than she can control.

"Why do you hate us so much?!" Marigold follows after him, clearly sick of his attitude.

"I don't hate you. How can I hate you? I don't even know you," he responds, walking too fast for her to catch up.

"But you don't want us in your party," Max states.

"Correct," he mumbles.

"Why not?!" Marigold tries, surprised when he actually turns around and towers over her.

"Because you're annoying! Both of you," Mike fumes, causing her to flinch. "Also, we don't need another party member. I'm our paladin, Will's our cleric, Dustin's our bard, Lucas is our ranger, and El's our mage."

The two girls seem a bit taken aback by the last name, never having met the said mage.

"El? Who's El?" Max curiously wonders, pulling Goldie away from his closeness.

"Someone. No one," Mike shakes his head, turning to walk away.

"Someone or no one?" Max questions, following after him.

Marigold stays ground to her spot, watching his body language closely and listening to what he has to say next. You could always understand a person better if you paid attention.

"She was in our party a long time ago. She moved away, okay?" He scoffs, frowning.

That's when everything clicks for Marigold. Mike is hurting!

"She was a mage?" Max questions softer, trying to understand him more. "Well, what could she do? Like magic tricks or something?"

When he doesn't respond, she hops off her board in front of him, unwilling to give up.

"Well, I could be your zoomer!" She states with a smile.

Marigold giggles, reminding them both that she's there.

"That's not even a real thing," she defends.

"It could be!" Max tries.

Marigold nods, "and I can be your artificer!"

Mike is surprised that she actually seems to have decent knowledge on D&D's characters and the common break down. He does his best not to seem to impressed though, immediately rolling his eyes.

"No," he states.

Max gets onto her board and begins circling him, doing her best to gain some sort of approval. Marigold watches for a bit, amused by it all.

After some small bickering, Mike seems to finally be giving in, a smile on his face. Then, Max flies off her board.

They both rush to help her. Mike lends her a hand, and Marigold rushes to get her board while looking around with a weird look. What just happened was really unexpected, and there's no way it could've been a mistake.

As soon as she's back up though, Mike is already outside of the gym, looking around as if he's expecting to see someone.

Marigold rushes after him, smiling when she gets to him.

"So are we in the party or what?" She giggles.

Disappointment rises in Mike. He was hoping that what just happened might have been El, but when she was no where in sight, he began to feel hopeless once again. As you know, he communicates his disappointment through anger, so his next few words are harsh.

"No. You're never gonna be in our party! NEVER. You're annoying, creepy, and just plain out weird," he shouts, letting all his emotions out on the poor girl. "I want nothing to do with you. Why don't you just—"

He stops his yelling when he notices her quivering lip.

It begins to register in his mind just how loud he was being.

His face softens as he looks at the girl, watching as her eyes begin to overflow and pour tears down her cheeks at an alarming rate. He feels wrong knowing that he's the reason she's crying. He feels worse when he finds her weirdly beautiful with her bright red eyes and puffed out lip.

"Goldie," Max softly states, getting to the scene just in time, but completely stunned by seeing her cry.

She really was so pretty when she cried.

The small girl looks so fragile, and she doesn't give them another second to look at her as she runs towards the exit of the building. She runs, ignoring their calls to her.

When she makes it into the parking lot, she look around for a familiar car. Billy's.

Luckily, he'd come back to pick some work he forgot to get, and is just smoking a cigarette before he has to drive home to his dreaded family.

He's completely taken by surprise when Marigold tackles him in a hug, her arms wrapped tightly around his waist and face buried his lower chest. He can feel his shirt growing wet, and knows she's crying.

He doesn't hug back at first, completely confused by why she would go to him of all people for comfort. He just sort of stands there, looking down at her awkwardly.

"Please take me home," she begs, looking up at him.

He's a little distracted by her stunning appearance, but throws his cigarette aside and nods.
