Why Many People Hate Feminism?
Note: This is not a pro-feminism or anti-feminism article.
You will come across many videos on Youtube, and other social media handles where people have called out on feminism. Viewers simply love those videos. Ever thought about it, why?
Now before I get started with it, I wanna share what I stand for. Look! I don't care what's in your pants, but if you are a spiritual-minded, deep-thinking, and intelligent, then I like you more. Of course, if you don't have any of the above traits, it's not that I don't think highly of you. We may have many common grounds if we talk/chat. It's just a matter of friendly conversation.
Now, when it comes to the rights of women, sure. I'm all up for it.
So, this is my stand so that those who don't know me personally won't think I have a hidden agenda or some shit. I hope you get an idea where I'm coming from. So don't judge me without reading this entire piece of writing.
Now back to the topic. If feminism is all about women to have equal rights like men, then why so many people hate it?
Keep in mind I'm gonna put my analysis based on my observation. Sure, you can disagree with it.
1) Man-hating
I think this is one of the main reasons why many people don't like feminism. Many people hold this view that though feminism claims it is all about women's rights, but in its core, it's simply man-hating.
This is where things start to get ugly, that's how the terms like feminazi or pseudofeminist get justified. Sure, I have come across feminists who say the above examples are wrong and don't represent actual feminism. So, that's all alright. Every organization, community, culture, or religion has bad apples. But the above reason is not the only reason why many people dislike feminism.
2) Agree with us, or you're a sexist
Many feminists can't take criticism. You will come across various studies and researches by different scholars who say how feminism has made women more miserable. I'm not gonna quote any of those studies because my purpose is not to bash feminism here like many people do (and get millions of views/likes on social media handles).
So, are you trying to imply feminism is wrong? Does this mean you support female objectification? Do you believe in toxic masculinity? Are you promoting patriarchy and male chauvinism? Don't you care about the crimes committed against women?
Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! Wait a minute. That's not what I'm trying to explain here.
Yup! Then agree with us, or you're a sexist, male chauvinistic pig!
You see, that's my point. In this world, even political ideologies, religion, God, science, and so on have been criticized. Why should feminism be above criticism?
I'm sure many feminists would accept criticism, but just to label someone as a sexist because that person disagrees with feminism doesn't necessarily make the person a sexist.
About those studies, what I think is, they are condemning feminism for what it has become as a movement, not the goal behind feminism itself.
Now, this is where my third point comes into the picture.
3) Multiple definitions
This is not precisely one of the big reasons why many people hate feminism, but you will come across various types of feminism.
Liberal Feminism.
Radical Feminism.
Marxist and Socialist Feminism.
Cultural Feminism.
I haven't studied each one of them thoroughly, but by the terminology, I can only guess. You can define each if you want.
I have come across feminists who stand for all-inclusiveness. They want to assert certain dress-codes for women as a choice, but they are quite selective when it comes to showing their all-inclusiveness to everyone. They will also put down certain dress-codes as regressive and patriarchal. Now, this attitude clearly makes those feminists biased, you know, the double standards.
Also, I have conversed with feminists who argued that feminism is for all genders, not just females. So, that's why everyone should be a feminist.
Whoa! The last one was pretty deep.
I don't know what to call this type of feminism. It sounds more like social justice to me.
What I argue is, first of all, I think, if that's what feminism really means, well...
Just for argument's sake, even if I do accept this definition as the correct definition, is there any problem if I can't support equal rights for women (or LGBTQ) or everyone without labeling myself as a feminist?
Now my question to you is? Will I be labeled as a sexist or anti-feminist for not labeling myself as a feminist?
Anyway, on a personal note, I don't want to label myself with anything. Not because I'm "woke," but I have my explanation for it, which I'll explain later.
