SIXTEEN - STILL ON THE ROCKS
The sound of her phone ringing was the thing that woke Eliza Stark up from a deep sleep. A sleep that wasn't plagued with the terrible nightmare of her blond friend dying or those visions that randomly come up. It was a dreamless sleep; a peaceful sleep. So, when she finally woke up, she wasn't at all happy about it. Eliza grunted and covered her face with the blanket as the light from the sun hit her face, and her other hand flew out to grab her phone – wherever it was. Eventually her fingers wrapped around the device, which was on the floor beside the couch, and she blindly answered the call as she pressed the phone to her ear.
"This better be an emergency," Eliza spoke, half asleep, to the caller.
"I've been calling you all morning, where are you?"
Eliza opened her eyes and sat up on the couch. The blanket fell onto her lap, then, and she brushed a few strands of hair from her eyes. "Peter?" She questioned. Her eyes found the time by the TV and her face contorted into shock at seeing it was almost noon. It was also a school day.
"The one and only," Peter Parker replied. "Why haven't you been answering your phone?"
Eliza slowly stood up and gathered the blanket in one arm as she left the living room. Killian, Tony, and Pepper were all still asleep and she didn't want to wake them with her talking. (Although, she was pretty sure she noticed Tony shut his eyes pretty quickly as she glanced at him). She shuffled on her feet down the hallway, scrunching her face up as she mentally scolded herself for sleeping in. "Aw, is someone worried about me?" She teased, walking into the kitchen. "I slept in, don't worry. I can sleep through anything so of course I didn't hear my phone at first. Have Josh and Jaz been calling?" Eliza then plopped down into a chair and rested her chin in the palm of her free hand once placing the blanket over her lap again.
"No. I mean, yeah, I was worried. Your evil ancestor is still out there... But good to know you're okay. Um, Josh has. I don't know about Jaz."
Eliza hummed, a frown forming on her lips. "Cool," she mumbled out, and Peter couldn't tell if she sounded more tired, bitter, or hurt. "Hey, if I give you what classes I usually go to, can you pick up whatever work I missed? Lie and say I'm sick or something."
"Um... Yeah, sure," Peter agreed after a moment of thinking. Eliza heard a few shouts from his end of the line, and then a gunshot. "After I take care of-."
"Yeah, yeah, go ahead. What is it? Robbery?"
"A mugger," his voice sounded a bit more muffled then and she had a feeling he had the suit on already. "Do you need me to stop by after get the stuff you missed?"
"If you want," Eliza replied. She stood up, now enough awake to look around with eyes that weren't half closed, and let the blanket fall to the floor. She walked over to the coffee machine, and didn't hesitate to start making a pot of coffee. "Just text me once you're done."
"Yeah, will do, bye."
Eliza blinked and stared at her phone that sat in her hand, not having a chance to say bye in return since Peter abruptly hung up. She rolled her eyes and set her phone down as she waiting for the coffee to finish. But then as she waited, she picked up her phone again and looked to see how many times Peter had tried to call her. It only ended up being four times, including the time she answered, and a few text messages from him asking where she was and if Morgana was back. Then there were just a couple missed calls and messages from Joshua; one message including him saying that it was probably a good thing that she skipped – apparently Jaz was in an even more pissed off mood. The redhead college student didn't bother checking up on the brunette.
Eliza quickly texted Josh that she just slept in, to not worry about her. Then she sent Peter the work from the classes she needed, and then finally the coffee was done.
"Who was on the phone?"
Eliza whipped her head around as she made her cup of caffeine and her eyes landed on her dad walking through the kitchen entrance. She shrugged and turned back to the beverage in front of her, and said, "Just Peter. He's, uh, getting my work from school."
"Parker?" Tony inquired, stepping up beside his daughter and fixing his own cup of coffee.
"What other Peter do I know, Dad?"
Tony shrugged, eyes watching his daughter as she moved to go sit back at the table with her coffee. Eliza, once having sat down, met his eyes and gave him a questioning look. One that asked why was he staring at her with slightly narrowed eyes and pursed lips. He seemed to get the message and said, "You wanted nothing to do with him before I left to find Doctor Strange, and now you're oddly close friends- wait is he coming by here?" He pointed down the ground, eyes wide and a worried look on his face.
Eliza sighed and leaned back in the chair she was seated in. "He knows about it all, Dad."
"You told him?!"
"No! He found out!"
Tony stared for a moment and then sighed. He took a sip of his coffee before asking, "How long has he known?"
Eliza looked at her drink as she thought about it. "A couple weeks," she eventually answered. At hearing an aggravated sigh come from her father, she looked up quickly and watched him. "He won't tell anyone."
"But he could slip up!" Tony argued.
Like you did? Eliza wanted to retaliate with those three words but her lips formed into a straight line, staying quiet. Honestly, if it was someone else talking to her about it she would have said that, but it was her dad. She might talk back and come out on top with other people, but not Anthony Stark. Everyone knows to respect their parents. Even the parents who are billionaires that sometimes goes out to save the world in a suit made of metal. Eliza looked away and took a drink of her coffee, tapping her fingers on the mug.
"He hasn't said anything. He won't say anything," Eliza said quietly.
Tony was quiet then, as well as was Eliza, and he inspected the look Eliza wore on her features. He licked his lips and said, "You really trust him?"
She shrugged but nodded. "Yeah." Pause. "So does Killian."
"Good," the man nodded. Another pause of silence. "You two are just friends, right?"
"Correct."
"Good."

Thankfully, Tony wasn't in the house when Peter Parker finally arrived with Eliza's school work. Despite the fact that she had told her father that Peter and her were just friends, Tony Stark was still going to be that over protective father when a boy nears his daughter; so, he didn't get a chance to interrogate the boy. And not only was Eliza glad, so was Peter. Although, Killian was a little disappointed. It would have been the first time a guy was interrogated by Tony Stark himself and not the agent who poses as their dad. Also because Tony wasn't home and neither was Pepper, Killian and Eliza gladly made the offer available to Peter for him to stay, and he took it.
So while Eliza caught up on the work she missed that day, the two boys sat in front of the TV in the living room and played on the Xbox Killian had. The sounds didn't bother the working girl. In fact, they helped her concentrate. Complete silence would have made the girl gone a bit insane; there was just something about it that Eliza hated. So the sounds of gunshots, explosions, random computer voices, and Killian and Peter yelling randomly didn't bother her as much as one would think they would.
It was about an hour and a half after Peter had gotten there when Eliza finished up the work. She shut the book closed and piled all of the school objects into the recliner beside her, since she was seated on the floor. Her eyes looked to the two teenagers and then to the TV where the some video game was being shown for two players. Eliza's eyebrows moved upwards as she tried to understand what was going on – explosions, guns, and fighting – but eventually just gave up and went to play a game on her phone. But before she did that, she looked to see if Josh or Jaz had texted or called again.
The boy had just replied to the message she sent him when she got off the phone with Peter. Still nothing from the girl. Eliza frowned, a bit disappointed. So, she decided to text Jasmine herself.
[ message to: fiery redhead
Hey, did I miss anything big at school today?? ]
[ message to: fiery redhead
Just so you know, you can't ignore me forever for simply sticking up for iron man. ]
Aggravation towards Jasmine grew in Eliza as the brunette noticed that just a few seconds later, her messages were read but not answered. The little bubble at the bottom of the screen indicating that Jasmine was replying wasn't even there. Eliza's jaw went slack and she glared at her phone, eventually dialing Jasmine's number and storming out of the living room as she pressed the phone to her ear. She paced around in the kitchen as the phone rang on the other line. One ring was cut short, ending the call Eliza was trying to make. Of course she then tried calling again. And again, the ringing stopped abruptly.
She was about to dial Jasmine's number for a third time when a voice was heard behind her.
"Everything okay?"
Eliza stopped pacing and turned around to see bother her brother and Peter standing there. The two boys looked concerned. Despite the fact that she wasn't mad at them, she still glared at them. "Peachy," she sniped out.
Killian rolled his eyes and Peter just stared in slight worry.
"Are you and Jaz still on the rocks?" Killian asked after a moment of silence.
"I'm trying to get us off of the rocks but she's ignoring me like the plague," Eliza explained. She looked at her phone and debated on actually trying a third time. After all, a third time's a charm, as they say. But she just tossed the device on the counter and crossed her arms. Out of all the things that could possibly ruin their relationship, it was the fact that Eliza and Jasmine disagreed on whether or not Tony Stark could be a good father. "It probably didn't help I skipped today," she thought aloud.
Friendships were important to Eliza, Peter realized as he looked at the girl who didn't just looked pissed but also hurt. Under all of that anger and threats and violence and a million other things, Eliza Stark actually cared about the relationships with her friends and cherished them. Eliza thought of the few friends she as an extension of her family. And the thought of one of her friendships falling apart scared the female vigilante.
"Do you want me to talk to her?" Killian asked, walking to the fridge and opening it in search of a snack.
Eliza shook her head. "I don't care."
"She's just overreacting," Killian stated with a wave of his hand. His head was inside the fridge, so for them to actually see the motion he had stuck it out from behind the fridge door. "It'll be find and dandy soon enough."
"She'll also be pissed for a good amount of time that I, once again, don't have the same opinion as her," Eliza spoke bitterly.
"But everyone has different opinions, why would she be mad?" Peter questioned, crossing his arms over his chest.
"Try telling her that."
"She knows that, but sadly she also thinks that she should be right all the time. Which also means people should always agree with her. Which then means that if your opinion is different than hers, its completely wrong and you need to go reevaluate your life choices," Killian explained from his spot. He had finally found some yogurt in the back of the fridge, and now he was leaning against the closed fridge, eating the food. "Very opinionated."
Peter frowned. He opened his mouth to speak but shut it as the sound of police sirens were heard in the city. The three teenagers froze in their spot and stared at one another, silently asking a question to one another. It was answered as Eliza quickly moved to leave.
"I need to let my anger out, hopefully I can on these bad guys."
Killian set the yogurt down and followed suit. He patted Peter on the shoulder as he passed him and said, "Got your bug suit?" Peter nodded in reply as Killian looked at him. "Good. Let's be a bomb-ass team!"
