xxxvii. Fallen

Louis had been helping me pack my own and Dad's things into suitcases later that night, rushing to get everything together. I had been packing my own things, tossing clothes and items I decided I didn't need. Louis had been packing Dad's clothes and things downstairs in his room, both of us deciding on a plan to escape to the Rift once Dad came home. I had called him earlier, informing him Marissa and presumably Nox were in town. He had assured me he was fine and was hurrying home, which lifted a great weight off of my shoulders.

I had carried my bags downstairs into the living room, seeing Louis sitting on the couch, his eyes trained on a laptop I had never seen him own before.

"What are you doing?" I asked as I set the bags next to Dad's, sitting next to Louis on the couch. My eyes looked over the various tabs open, seeing complex codes and the address of the hospital I had been staying at.

"Looking at something." Louis mumbled, his eyes flickering quickly from tab to tab. I stayed silent, still looking at what he was trying to do, when I caught sight of my name on the screen.

"Why is my name there?" I asked and pointed at the screen, seeing my name as the only recognizable thing among numbers and characters that made no sense.

"This is amazing..." Louis mumbled, still focused on the screen. I grew annoyed, nudging his arm as I waited for him to answer my question.

"Apparently your Dad has been changing records and encoding files about you on hospital computers, official government offices, anywhere that Nox could possibly find you. Have you ever Googled your name?"

My eyebrows furrowed in confusion. "No. Why?"

Louis quickly minimized the tab with codes, pulling up Google and quickly typing my name. Once he hit the search button, millions of search results pulled up, but not a single one was about me.

"Your dad changed so many records that the only person your name pulls up is an old woman with a similar name that died years ago. No one can find you."

I stayed silent for a moment, not quite sure why Dad would do something like that.

"Why did Dad change all my files? How is that important?" I asked, Louis's fingers ceasing their typing and gripping into fists. I watched as his lips parted, mind still trying to decide on the right words.

"Nox can find anyone. Using online searches and files makes it easier. It happened to...a friend of mine." He explained carefully, biting his lip as he shut the laptop off and placed it inside one of Dad's suitcases.

"A friend of yours?" I asked, trying to stay gentle in my inquisition. This was obviously a sensitive topic for him.

"My friend...he used his talents to help a Terran, and he was put in the hospital after he got hurt. Nox found his hospital files." Louis painfully spoke, eyes trained on the floor.

"What happened to him?" I asked quietly, Louis staying silent, making me think of the worst.

"Did you ever see him again?" I asked my last question, Louis shaking his head no.

"Never again." With that, Louis got up suddenly from the couch and walked to the front door, pushing the curtains covering the side windows over to peer through the glass. "When is your Dad coming?"

I closed my eyes, using my telekinetic senses I had been practicing to sense any cars driving down the old road to the cabin. I did sense one car coming quickly, figuring that it had to be Dad.

"Soon. He's not far out." I assured Louis, who breathed a sigh of relief before grabbing the bags and setting them by the back door.

"As soon as he comes home, we have to head for the Rift. I know where the closest entrance is, it won't take long to get there."

"Alright." I agreed, before my telekinetic senses suddenly felt something else besides the one car I had seen earlier. Now there wasn't just one car, I could feel multiple speeding down the road and heading for the cabin. If I focused hard enough, I could sense many people piled into the cars, more than just Dad.

"There's more..." I mumbled, Louis not quite hearing me. "Louis." I repeated, my eyes now wide as I realized what this had to mean.

He turned to face me, not sensing my distress.

"Louis, there's more cars than just Dad's truck coming here." I told him, my heart starting to pound with fear as I sensed the cars take a turn onto a side road that led straight to the cabin. This wasn't a group of families coming on vacation or nature lovers looking for a place to start exploring the forest. The only place that side road led to was here. Whoever was in the cars was coming for us.

"What?" Louis was confused, stepping closer to me. His hands settled on my shoulders, lightly squeezing to try and calm me down, but I was already frightened.

"There's at least five cars coming for us. It's not Dad." I explained, making Louis' eyes wide as we both realized what this meant.

Nox had found us, and now they were coming for us.

"We have to go now." Louis said, hurrying to get the bags and urging me towards the back door. I refused to move, my heart pounding as I felt the cars get closer and closer. "Mira!"

"We can't leave, not without Dad." I blurted out, my eyes growing watery as I realized the decision I was faced with. Either I go with Louis to the Rift and hope Dad is safe until he joins us, or I stay and risk Louis and my life waiting for him.

"We can return for him later, we need to go now." Louis told me, grabbing my arm and roughly pulling me towards the back door. I used my telekinetic senses to keep me firmly planted where I was, Louis starting to panic now.

"Mira, if Nox gets you, that's the end for Lux. You have to come on!" Louis yelled, trying to pull me again.

"B-but..." I stuttered, my breath catching in my throat as I heard the cars pull into the driveway. They were here.

Both of us froze for a moment before Louis grabbed my hand and tugged me towards a closet door, my body following him. My heart was racing, my palms were sweating, and I felt tears threaten to spill over my cheeks. Nox was here. The fact still hadn't set in for me.

Louis pressed me to his front as he sat down on the floor of the small coat closet, shutting the door and wrapping his arms around me.

"Maybe we can convince them no one is home." Louis whispered, my head nodding in agreement. If Nox heard the back door shutting, it would be a chase through the forest that we might not win.

I gasped loudly as I heard the front door being slammed open, Louis' palm immediately pressing to my mouth to keep me quiet.

"Shh." He whispered in my ear, my hand reaching up to clutch his arm tightly. I knew Louis could sense how scared I was, holding me tight as both of our heartbeats raced at crazy speeds.

I could hear footsteps echoing around the cabin as the people poured into the cabin, all of them quickly rushing around the house.

"Search everywhere. Find him." A female voice I could only assume was Marissa ordered, my telekinetic senses seeing multiple people spreading out all around the house: going upstairs into my room, going into Dad's room, checking the kitchen and living room, even going outside to see if we were out there. I was grateful for my mother's gift to me, I could sense where everyone in the house was.

Including a man coming right for the closet we were in.

I squirmed in Louis' grasp, who tightened his hold to keep someone from hearing. I sensed the man reaching for the doorknob, heard it being turned, and saw the light pour into the dark space as the door was opened.

My scream was caught in my throat as I stared at the man who seemed to not see us, his eyes looking over the jackets hanging on hangers and the pile of old gloves, scarves, and mittens Louis and I were sitting on. My eyes were glued to the man's, stress and adrenaline building inside me as I saw his irises were clouded in grey, his expression blank. Was this what happened when Allister possessed someone?

But...why couldn't he see us?

"No one is in here, Miss." The man announced in a monotone voice before moving to close the door. I sighed in relief as the man began to close the door, but my fright returned when I felt my foot nudge the door when the door was moved to close. The man looked curiously at the door before shrugging and moving the door to close again, his only explanation being "Must have a old hinge."

Louis and I sighed in relief together as we realized we were safe, my chest rapidly rising and falling from my fear.

"Why couldn't he see us?" I whispered very quietly, Louis shrugging before looking as if a genius idea had struck him.

"Invisibility. Your father said it was a talent you were born with earlier." He whispered back, a sigh of relief escaping him as he came up with an escape plan involving my newfound talent.

I would have to keep us unseen as we maneuvered around Nox members to the open front door, then we would take off and make a break for it once we were in the clear.

I was wondering how we would open the door without anyone noticing when Marissa seemed to grow annoyed at her worker's incompetence.

"Where is he? He has to be somewhere." She grew frustrated, harshly opening the door and peering inside at the clothes we sat on. She forgot to close the door, and with a deep breath, Louis and I carefully stood up to begin our escape.

We carefully walked around members of Nox that were being yelled at by Marissa, being sure not to run into any of them so we wouldn't be caught. Louis held tightly to my hand, being sure not to let go or else he would be seen. The short walk to my front door now seemed agonizingly long, both of us being overly cautious. Just a few more steps, and we would be free.

Just a few more-

Suddenly, a member of Nox started walking right towards Louis and I's hands, the man much to tall for me to reach over his head and keep my hold on Louis. My eyes grew wide as the man came closer and closer to us. If I let go, Louis would be visible. If I didn't let go, the man would know something was wrong after he ran into something that wasn't seen. Either way, we lost.

I winced as the man knocked into our connected hands, Marissa catching sight.

"What are you doing?" She asked harshly, my eyes connecting with Louis'. He was just as scared as I was, his eyes soon scrunching shut as he realized we were caught.

"Something's there, Miss. I can't see anything though." The Nox member explained, Marissa stepping closer and beginning to reach out towards us.

Time seemed to run in slow motion as Louis' eyes opened, his lips mouthing a single word to me.

'Run.'

Just as Marissa was about to touch our hands, Louis released his hold on me, his body now completely visible to everyone. Marissa was startled as Louis shoved past her and began to run towards the back door, my body frozen as she screamed to her henchmen.

"Get him! Don't let him escape!"

Immediately the men and women of Nox started chasing after Louis, my body still frozen in shock until I remembered what Louis had ordered me. My legs started to run, using my new speed to race down the steps to the cabin and heading for the forest. Louis could easily take down the men and women, then he could find me in the forest and we could head for the Rift.

I easily reached the forest, hiding myself behind a tree as my fear-induced invisibility wore off. My eyes saw Louis in the back yard of the cabin, my hands shaking as I watched him fight off the Nox.

All four elements were seen as Louis battled the henchmen, screams of pain being heard as he broke bones with launched rocks, scared others away with his flames, cut skin with launched ice shards. I thought he was amazing, taking down all of the men until a single figure stood in front of him: Marissa.

I waited for Louis to fight her and win, when a strange thing happened.

In a second, Louis suddenly screamed and fell to the ground in pain, Marissa having not touched him and still standing where she was. Fear coursed through me like ice water as I watched my boyfriend writhe in pain and scream, tears falling down my cheeks. What was going on?

Marissa stepped closer to Louis, his cries of pain only getting louder. I couldn't take it anymore, my crying having turned to rage as I started running towards Louis.

"Leave him alone!" I yelled out, Louis' head turning to see me running towards him from the forest edge. His eyes turned wide, his hand reaching out.

"No!" He cried out, the earth suddenly cracking and shaking in front of me. I had to stop running, tripping on my feet and landing on my side. The ground kept shaking and moving, my heart pounding harshly against my chest as I watched a huge crevice form between Louis and I. The earth split into two, the crack growing wider and wider. I looked to Louis, seeing his form laying on the ground, his eyes focused on mine. Marissa was too occupied trying to keep her balance to see Louis's hands command a group of clouds to lower from the sky and provide a cover for me. The clouds hid me like a smoke screen, rendering it impossible for Marissa to see me.

My eyes searched to see Louis, seeing him weak and tired as he tried crawling away from Marissa and towards me, reaching his hand out as if our fingertips could touch.

'Stay hidden, don't let them find you.' Louis' voice echoed in my head, my hand covering my mouth to silence my sobs as I watched Marissa walk up to him and raise her hand up before pushing it down quickly, Louis falling unconscious in the grass immediately.

My tears were soon replaced with a fiery anger as I watched Marissa's men carry Louis into one of the cars.

"Stay hidden." I repeated Louis' words to myself, my fists clenching as I quickly wiped away the tears that fell. "I'm sorry, Lou, but that's not happening."

A newfound fury blazed within me, and I knew exactly what I was going to do once my father came home.

"No one hurts the ones I love." I muttered as I watched the car speed off, my telekinetic senses already seeing where it was headed. My eyes narrowed as I turned my gaze to the moon, my lungs taking a deep breath as I clenched my fists.

"I'm coming for you, Louis. I promise."
