We sped through the night, Dad's truck quickly reaching the cabin in record time. Louis wasn't moving his hurt arm at all, his head resting on my lap and his eyes closed as he laid across the back seat.

"Shh, it'll be okay." I promised him, gently running my fingers through his hair. His eyes opened when he felt the truck stop, Dad and I helping him get out of the truck and inside the cabin. Nox would probably know we were back here, but we didn't have anywhere else to give Louis the immediate medical attention he needed without being found out he was different from Terrans.

Dad worked quickly, clearing our small kitchen table with a swift motion of his arm and laying Louis on it. The objects that had been on the table crashed to the ground, but no one paid them any attention. Louis needed help right now.

Louis hissed through his teeth as his hurt shoulder made contact with the table surface, his pretty eyes scrunched up in pain, knuckles pale white as he gripped his hands into fists. He groaned and winced as Dad took his hurt arm and slowly moved it around, testing his shoulder.

"It's dislocated, we gotta pop his shoulder back in place." He muttered, making my heart sink. Louis never should have gotten hurt in the first place, and now here he was, suffering from Marissa's wrath.

Dad's gaze fixed on me next, his eyes catching sight of my hand brushing through Louis' hair to try and distract him from the pain.

"Mira, step away. You can't touch him when I do this." Dad told me, his hands on Louis' hurt arm ready to fix his shoulder.

"Why not?" I asked, Louis releasing another moan of pain as his suffering only got worse.

"Your talent will stop me from popping his shoulder back in place because it'll cause him pain. Don't touch him until it's back where it should be." Dad ordered, my hand removing itself from Louis' hair, my eyes seeing Louis open his eyes to look for me.

"It'll be alright, I'm right here." I assured him, Louis' dazed eyes never looking away from me. His cheek was still reddened, and a cut on his forehead I hadn't noticed before continued to bleed.

"Okay Louis, I'm not going to lie to you." Dad started. "This is going to hurt a lot."

Louis didn't respond, only shutting his eyes tight in dread. I leaned over to him, whispering to try and distract him while Dad fixed him.

"You know where I would take you right now? To the meadow where we went stargazing at." I started, Louis' lips parting slightly and his eyes opening as his attention fell to me. I smiled and kept talking, noticing my Dad waiting for Louis to be completely distracted before starting in my peripheral vision.

"Y-yeah?" Louis weakly mumbled.

"Yeah. And we could spend all the time in the world there. We could just lay in the grass and I would play with your hair and we could tell each other stories an-" I kept talking, but was silenced by Louis' cry of pain as my father abruptly popped Louis' shoulder back in place. My hand immediately held his once I received the nod from Dad, my eyes watching as the protective gold runes from my arms spread and swirled onto Louis' skin.

Louis was still in pain as my father sat him up to place his shoulder and arm in a sling to keep it still, but he tried his best not to show it. The cut on his forehead still trickled with blood, and after helping Louis move to the couch, I went to the kitchen to fetch a bowl of water and a small towel to clean him off.

Louis was laid on the couch, Dad going into his room to grab an old sleeveless t-shirt and basketball shorts for Louis to change into. I placed the bowl of water and towel from the kitchen on the coffee table, my hands grabbing the t-shirt and tugging it over Louis' head, using the gentlest touch to guide his hurt arm through the cut sleeves. Louis insisted he could change out of his jeans by himself, Dad coughing awkwardly and looking at me. I glared at him, watching as he went to his bedroom for something. I rolled my eyes at his immaturity, taking Louis' jeans and folding them on the coffee table as he pulled the basketball shorts on and sat back down on the couch. Just then, Dad returned with a wooden box in his hands, setting it down on the table.

Dad had used his powers to check if Louis had any serious internal injuries, a sigh of relief leaving both of us as he determined Louis was fine. He would have some bruises and scars from the experience, but after some rest he would be back to normal.

His attention returned to the box, opening it to reveal various vials of liquids and herbs inside. I watched curiously as Dad pulled a bottle of dark blue liquid and small container of a paste of some kind that strangely glowed green. Dad handed both to me before shutting the box.

"I'll put a painkiller spell on him, but it'll probably wear off sometime during the night given all he's been put through. Have him drink this," Dad held the dark blue bottle up, "if he's having trouble sleeping. Rub the painkiller paste into his skin if his shoulder starts hurting him. Got it?" Dad informed me, handing me both containers as he stood to cast his painkilling spell on Louis, his usual white light from his hands traveling over to Louis and ridding him of his discomfort. Louis sighed in relief as the light went to his shoulder, his eyes closing for a moment before they opened again. He thanked my father, who only nodded and yawned soon after.

Dad had told me he was going to bed after that, and I didn't blame him. It had been a long and exhausting day, and no one felt the fatigue more than Louis.

I kneeled down in front of where he sat on the couch, his eyes trained on me as I wet the cloth with water and began to clean up the dried blood and cuts on his skin. I set the cloth down before helping Louis lay down carefully on the couch, taking blanket and covering him with it before continuing to clean him up.

"The danger's gone, Butterfly." Louis' voice was hoarse and scratchy as he attempted to joke. "You don't need to protect me now." His gaze flickered down to his arm that wasn't in the sling, my runes still shimmering and glowing on his skin.

"I'll always protect you. I won't leave your side until you're healed." I assured him, kissing his split lip gently before washing the blood off of his forehead. Louis' gaze was fixated on my eyes, and he slowly reached his healthy arm out to pull me closer to him by the chin. He kissed me slowly yet lovingly, his thumb brushing over my cheek softly. I pulled away to kiss his forehead, my lips trying to love his pain away. I kissed his jagged cut above his eyebrow, his now swollen cheek, his jammed fingers, his healing shoulder, and finally his split lip once more.

Louis' eyes were looking at me like I was the most amazing and breathtaking thing he had ever seen, his fingers on his bad left arm trying to stretch their way to my hand on his chest. I moved my hand and held his tight, shaking my head at my boyfriend.

"Louis, you're hurt. You need to rest." I told him, watching as his eyelids seemed too heavy a burden for him to bear. He yawned, tired eyes looking to me before they closed. Louis did have one request of me before he fell asleep however.

"Sleep with me tonight?" He asked softly, his good arm patting his chest for me to lay down on top of him.

"Lou, you just got hurt. You need to sleep alone so your shoulder can heal." I insisted, but Louis only pouted. His shoulder seemed to agree with me, Louis wincing as he shifted to try and make room for me.

"See?" I smirked, Louis only grumbling something inaudible.

"Then where are you sleeping?" Louis asked, his face set in an expression of disapproval when I gestured to an armchair next to the couch.

"Mira, no." He scolded. "You need to sleep in a proper bed, just go upstairs. I'll be fine."

I shook my head no and picked up a spare pillow and blanket I had brought down earlier and got myself situated to go to sleep in the small armchair, leaving a small lamp on for Louis. Needless to say, Louis was using it to glare at me and my stubbornness, a smile from me the only thing he received back.

"Mira." His still raspy voice warned.

"Louis." I teased, finding his little frustration face adorable. It looked like a dog who had just lost his favorite toy, or a cat who had just been placed in a bath, completely harmless and kind of adorable.

"Please, just go to sleep upstairs. You'll be uncomfortable the whole night." Louis begged me again. I pushed aside my blankets and got up, walking over to my injured boyfriend. I kneeled down so I was sitting cross-legged in front of him, Louis' eyes following my every move. My fingers brushed over his cheek, watching as his eyes shut and breathing deepened.

"It's my turn to keep you safe. Will you let me?" I whispered. Louis sighed before his pretty eyes opened again, a smile spreading on my face as he nodded.

"Good. It's about time I put my talent to good use." I joked, Louis smiling softly as I kissed his forehead.

"Go to sleep, baby." I said, fingers brushing through his hair gently to help him fall asleep. Louis did a few minutes later, his breathing becoming deep and even as he dreamed peacefully safe and sound.

Just as he should be all of the time, I couldn't help but think. The weight of the situation before me suddenly made gravity seem like it was tugging down on me more, pulling my heart towards the earth and my tears down my cheeks. I covered my mouth with my hand as I tried to silence my sobs. This was too much crying for me, I needed to get a grip on myself. Why was I still crying? Louis was safe now, he was back with me, I needed to be strong for him.

He had been strong for me when I was in the hospital, all of the times I was hurt, all of the times I needed someone. Now the tables had turned, now it was my turn to be there for Louis. I huffed at myself, my hands quickly wiping away my tears. I needed to be strong, protectors had to be strong. I wasn't keeping my own life safe anymore. I was keeping Dad, Louis, my friends, all of them safe. I would keep all of them safe, no one would ever hurt them.

I had planned to go to sleep in the armchair, but I couldn't bring myself to move away from Louis' side. I ended up falling asleep right there, sitting on the floor next to the couch, my body leaning against it and my hand resting on my soul mate's chest.
