xxxii. Dark Clouds

I watched as my much younger father walked through a dark corridor, a black coat with golden embellishments and embroidered swirls adorning his torso and black pants making him seem like a shadow moving in the night. His usually friendly eyes were hard and cold, trained on a bolted door at the end of the hall. I followed him as he unbolted the heavy door and went inside of a small room with half of it covered in metal bars.

A single person sat behind the bars in his prison cell, a blindfold over his eyes and a smirk on his face. His posture straightened out when the door was closed behind my father. He had to be close to Dad's age, about mid-twenties, and I realized with a start why when he spoke.

"My my, this is quite the treat. I didn't think my only brother would ever pay me a visit here." The man said, his voice raspy. Dad kept a straight face, refusing to allow the man to get any kind of rouse out of him.

But...if the man said his only brother...was this man my uncle?

The man grinned behind his blindfold.

"Has Amelie had the baby yet?"

Dad crossed his arms over his chest, his face still a hard mask of no emotion. "No."

"Liar. You can't lie to a healer. She has, hasn't she? I could sense Amelie's pain and the baby's fragile little heartbeat even this far away from the healing center. If I focused hard enough, I could hear my niece's soft breathing." The man smirked again, Dad's face still stoic.

My uncle's smirk vanished as he sat up straighter, moving closer to the barred cage of his jail cell. His hands reached to grip the bars, but a sudden spark of electricity shocked his fingertips when they touched them. He pulled away quickly, wincing.

"The way I see it, you've come here for one of two reasons: first, you came to tell me that I'll get a miraculous pardon for my crimes to see my new niece..."

"You're right, it would be a miracle that you even saw the light of day outside this cell. But it most definitely won't happen." Dad asserted.

"That's why I said one of two reasons, listen to me when I talk to you!" My uncle yelled, Dad unflinching as he took his screams. The mysterious smile appeared on my uncle's face again as he explained his other reason.

"The other reason is to tell me my execution day has been moved."

"You're right again. It's been moved up to the end of the week." Dad informed the man, whose smirk vanished in record time when he heard the grim news.

"Moved...up?" The man's face suddenly turned pale white with fear.

Dad looked at his own poor brother who began to shake with fear.

"I was the one who requested the move." I watched as my father remained cold, unfeeling and having absolutely no sympathy for my uncle.

"Y-you did this to me? Why M-Mark?" My uncle whispered, making my heart lurch with hurt. Why would Dad move his own brother's execution day up?

"You know very well why." Dad glared at his brother.

Just then, my uncle became angry, his jaw set and a certain vein popping out in his neck.

"You'll take everything from Marissa. You know that?" My uncle spat at Dad. Dad was once again unfazed, but didn't say anything. "You'll take absolutely everything from her...maybe I should do the same to your picture-perfect family."

Emotion suddenly made an appearance on Dad's face, worry and anger mixing into a strange expression on his face. My uncle sinisterly smiled when he heard no response.

"Yes, I think it's only fair. You take me from my wife, I take your wife from you. I'm sure Amelie's weak from childbirth. Your pillar that you've relied on for so long would be easy to take out."

"You won't lay a finger on her, Allister." Dad suddenly snapped, a fire in his eyes.

"Maybe I will, maybe I won't." My uncle who I knew now was named Allister shrugged. "Maybe instead of Amelie, I should just kill your newborn daughter."

Rage erupted in my father as he reached and grasped the jail cell bars, ignoring the sparks coursing through his body.

"Don't you dare!" He yelled before releasing the metal bars, my eyes catching sight of blood dripping down his palms before they healed like nothing had ever happened. My uncle only laughed.

"I will be there. The moment when you least expect it, I will take her away from you. I've always wanted a daughter, maybe I'll end up a better father than you." Allister laughed again.

"You won't touch her. She will be the greatest talent you will never have." Dad assured my uncle before quickly opening the door to the room, slamming it shut as my uncle's words rang out and echoed among the metal walls.

"I will get her!"

I saw the moon when my eyes opened for the next time after the whole ordeal. It was barely a sliver of a shining silvery body hanging lowly in the dark night, barely peeking out at the world who so adored her. I couldn't help but feel the same.

I was barely a sliver of myself, my body aching and so weak I couldn't do much more than just lay in my bed and take in ragged breaths. I had been changed into comfy pajamas and tucked into bed, my hair having been pulled back into quite honestly the worst ponytail ever.

I tried to move, but I could only whimper in pain as my body ached and begged me to stop. I huffed as I realized I couldn't really move, but my hopes were lifted when I saw a figure leaning along the doorway.

Louis was silent as he walked over to me and pulled my blankets back, a chill brushing over my skin and making me shiver. Strong hands lifted me up bridal style as I was brought in close to his chest, one of his hands reaching my arms around his neck.

He was dressed in the same t-shirt and jeans he had been in when I was brought home, which made me wonder if I had only been asleep for a few hours. When we passed a lamp on the way out of my room I noticed his eyes were puffy and had small dark circles underneath them, and his skin was paler than usual. Even his beautiful eyes had changed, turning cold and dull dark blue rather than the light blue-green they usually were.

"Lou...Louis?" I managed to mumble softly, but Louis didn't look at me.

He carried me down the stairs towards the kitchen, setting me down in one of the chairs before moving to heat some soup for me. I was surprised as I looked around and didn't see Dad anywhere. The cabin was quiet and clean, and I didn't like it.

It wasn't long before Louis set down a bowl of chicken noodle soup and now four pills, no expression on his face as I looked up to him. What was going on? This wasn't the Louis I knew.

"Eat. You were asleep almost two days." Louis told me before sitting next to me. His hands were placed in his lap, his posture slouched as he stared at the tabletop. Why was he acting like this?

"Louis?" I softly spoke, my fingertips reaching to touch his arm lightly. Just as I touched his skin, my vision changed.

Louis was thrown against a wall, Dad's clenched fists holding him up against it. I watched in horror as my father spat harsh words at him.

"This is your fault, you know that? She could've died because of your stupidity!" Dad yelled, Louis not even flinching as he closed his eyes. Dad didn't seem to like the silent answer Louis gave him, moving to slam him against the wall again. Louis let out a grunt of pain as his already pounding head hit against the wall, but he didn't make a move to stop my father's rage.

"What are you going to do? Keep me away from her?" Louis mumbled in defeat, his eyes already changing to the dark form they were now.

"No. I have something better in mind." Dad assured Louis, his expression rivaling the one I had seen in my dream when he had glared at his brother. He finally released Louis, who now had to lean against the wall to keep his balance with his splitting headache.

"What is it?"

"You will take care of her until she is healed. You will watch as she struggles to move, struggles to breathe, struggles to barely stay alive. All because of what you did." Dad's words were laced with venom.

"You will see what damage you did to the thing you care about most."

I returned to reality with a huge headache and a nauseous feeling in my stomach, only opening my eyes after I was sure I wasn't going to be sick. My eyes had looked to Louis, whose eyes were fixated on the bowl of soup.

"You need to eat something, Mira." He had whispered as he pushed the bowl towards me.

"That's why you're being so cold? Because of Dad?" I asked, feeling like my heart was shattering all over again only for a different reason this time.

I didn't get an answer, only having the same glance towards the floor as before.

"Talk to me, please." I begged, but once again received no answer. Louis' fingers only pushed the pills towards me. I sighed before swallowing all four pills with some soup, deciding it best to just make this any less painful for Louis.

After my dinner, I had been carried back up to my room and tucked back into my sheets. I had asked Louis where Dad was, Louis only answering with "He had to do something."

I stayed silent as I watched Louis' face as he tugged the blankets up my body in a cocoon of warmth and softness, my body finding enough strength in me to lean up and kiss him. Louis' lips were frozen against my own, a realization that made tears prickle at the back of my eyes. I had stared up questioningly at the boy who was now so distant and so far away from the one I had grown to adore.

With a sigh, I fell back to the mattress, turning my back to him as I tried to fall asleep and get away from whatever nightmare my life was turning into. I squeezed my eyes shut tightly as I felt the first hot trail of tears flow down my cheeks, forcing my breathing to even out so Louis wouldn't see. I noticed the lamp next to my bed was turned off, my telekinetic senses still seeing Louis by my bedside. I heard the softest of sighs before a pair of lips kissed my cheek, moving to my ear next.

"I'm so sorry, Butterfly." Louis whispered before leaving my room, quietly shutting my bedroom door behind him. My Louis was still in there, still the man I had become a fool for.

If this was my father's punishment for Louis, then he would have to deal with me in the morning.
