xxv. A Mother's Gift

I felt like a kid on a sugar high as we walked back home from the soccer field. My legs were skipping through the forest, the late afternoon sky blushing above me with tones of burnt orange and dusky purple.

Louis was walking behind me, chuckling at me whenever I would spin or almost trip over myself.

"Careful now." He warned me when I almost stepped on a huge rock, his hand taking my arm to pull me close.

I giggled as I twirled into Louis' side, lifting his arm to rest over my shoulders. Louis seemed surprised by my silliness, pulling me close to press a kiss to my cheek as we walked on.

Imani had suggested we all go out for drinks to celebrate at a favorite spot in the Rift, but Louis quickly added that I was only nineteen and needed to get home seeing how it was getting late. Imani had pouted and pleaded with him for just one drink, but Louis had strictly opposed it.

"What's got you in such a good mood?" He chuckled after I hugged him tight while we walked.

"Thank you, Lou." I whispered into Louis' shirt, making him stop walking. My pinky finger caught his, wrapping around it tight. Louis looked down and smiled before gently uncurling my fingers, his slotting in perfectly in the small spaces between them like a key in a lock.

"For?" He pulled me in close, allowing his head to lean down so my lips could catch his like I desired.

"For today. It was fun." I beamed up at him, Louis' eyes holding a precious look as he gazed at me. His thumb reached up to barely trace over my lips, first the upper and then the bottom before allowing himself a kiss.

"You didn't tell them about my heart." I pointed out. I had noticed it after we had finished playing. I had felt a bit dizzy from the hot sun and the long-sleeved top I was wearing, and Louis quickly took the jersey off of me and helped me get to some shade without drawing any attention to me from his friends.

"I have told them, multiple times." He assured me as his hands went to the backs of my thighs, lightly squeezing as he ushered me to jump up. My legs wrapped around his waistband and my arms around the back of his neck as Louis backed me up against a tree, his soccer bag left forgotten on the ground. My back hit the trunk of a large tree, Louis' face nuzzling into the crook of my neck. I laughed and leaned my head back, Louis taking advantage of the moment to suck on my sweet spot just above the base of my neck. I felt him chuckle as I let out a whine, lips still torturing me with kisses.

"I've told them how you have the biggest heart I know, how you have too much love inside of you for one person to bear." Louis mumbled, one of his hands tugging at the collar of my t-shirt to allow his lips to kiss over my collarbones, teeth barely grazing over my skin.

"Haha, the biggest heart ever." I joked weakly about my enlarged heart, Louis ceasing his adoration of my skin to look at me.

"The biggest heart I know, no matter if it's made of glass." He assured me before our mouths met again, Louis letting me down afterwards.

We reached the cabin before dark, Dad welcoming us back with chicken noodle soup and asking tons of questions about how the match went. He was quite surprised when he heard about my save, Louis only chuckling softly as he ate his soup.

After we had finished eating, Louis and I had begun doing the dishes for Dad. We had a little teamwork going on: I would rinse the dishes off and then hand them to Louis, who would stick them in the dishwasher. Louis took humor in occasionally splashing me with water, earning a slap on the arm from me whenever he would get the soapy water in my hair or on my face.

"Louis, stop!" I laughed as Louis splashed more soapy water on my face, but soon winced when some of the water got into my eye. Louis' joking stopped as he turned my head to see, both of my eyes scrunched close as the soap stung. I tried to reach for a towel to wipe my eyes with, but my arm knocked into cool ceramic instead. My stinging eyes opened to see one of the bowls falling to the floor quickly, my hand reaching out to stop it from breaking.

I felt a strange pull, like invisible strings were connected from the pads of my fingertips to the bowl itself. When my fingers spread out and raised up, the bowl suddenly stopped in midair like the strings tugged up on it.

My eyes stung with pain from the soapy water, but I still stared wide eyed at the levitating bowl. Louis' reaction mirrored mine, his hand reaching out to tap the edge of the bowl, watching as it turned slightly to the side and began to spin as it hung in the air.

"I knew it...you did the same thing to the football earlier." Louis mumbled, blue eyes still wide with amazement as he smiled at me.

"W-what?" I barely whispered, still in shock as I quickly grabbed the bowl and set it down safely on the counter before grabbing a towel to wipe at my eyes.

"You have another talent." Louis beamed at me when I managed to get the soap out of my eyes. My arms were grasped by his hands, the infectious smile still never leaving his face. "Never thought you'd be telekinetic too."

My breath caught in my throat as the dream of Mom and Dad came back to me.

She raised her arm up ever so slightly, twisting her wrist and curling her fingers. I watched in astonishment as the glass shards lifted up into the air and tossed themselves into the trash...

Mom was telekinetic too, that's where I had inherited the talent from.

I still had an expression of shock on my face as Louis tugged me up to my room and away from Dad's ears. The door was swiftly closed as Louis ran around the room, collecting pillows in his arms to see if I could levitate those. While Louis was a flurry of motion, my body felt stiff and my chest was constricting so it was hard to breathe. I leaned against my door for support, my back sliding against the wood as I fell to the ground.

It was great that I was telekinetic, but my heart lurched with heavy emotion.

Was this Mom's gift to me? Maybe she couldn't be with me in person, but she was here in spirit.

Louis stopped his movement when he saw me, dropping the pillows and walking over to me.

"Hey, what's wrong?" He asked softly, thumb brushing over my cheek.

"It's hers, Lou." I mumbled and weakly smiled at the beautiful boy above me. "Mom was telekinetic."

Louis reciprocated my smile before taking my hands to help me up.

"Then what a present she left you."

---

I was standing under a clear and crisp sky, sunlight beaming down on the magical town below the two teenagers standing high up on a ledge with me, both of their feet attached by restraints to a single silvery piece of metal.

The boy was wide-eyed as he stared at the immense height below them, his heart pounding and his hands shaking as he held on tight to the girl's shirt. The girl, on the other hand, was excited and smiling deliriously.

"Ready?" She asked her partner in crime, blue eyes wild with excitement as she slid the silver board forward a little. A pathetic whimper escaped the boy as he gripped her shirt tighter in fear.

"N-no. Never. You know I hate heights, Amelie." The boy mumbled, burying his face into the back of her shoulder.

The teenage version of my mother rolled her eyes as she grasped my father's hand.

"Fine, we don't have to teleboard today." She huffed, flicking her long dark hair out of her face as she glared at my father.

Dad sighed in relief as he looked up hopefully at Mom. "Really?"

Mom smiled wickedly. "No."

And with that she leaned back towards the free fall of open air, her arms wrapping around Dad's waist as they fell backwards off of the high cliff, the silvery board attached to their feet falling with them for a few feet until suddenly they started soaring. Mom turned back around and started laughing hysterically as they flew high above the Luxien town below them. Dad, meanwhile, was screaming his lungs out and seemed to be on the brink of tears as he clutched to my mother with a death-grip.

At least I knew now where my deathly fear of heights came from.

I watched my parents fly high up, wild and free and crazily in love with each other. Dad's screams had been silenced as Mom hovered the board high up in the sky and planted a sloppy kiss on his mouth, hands holding tight to the collar of his shirt. I was surprised that despite his fears, Dad still kissed Mom back with all the love she gave him, the two getting lost in their own world high above Lux.

I smiled in my sleep.
