xxii. Movie Night
Stars shone in the night sky from the small window in the room. I spun myself around to find that I was in a nursery, my nursery. I was having one of those weird dreams again.
My nursery had a golden theme, the color present almost everywhere in the room. The crib, the sheets, the rocking chair in the corner, all of them were a light golden color. Pieces of white furniture and blankets broke up the shimmering shade, a pristine white picture frame holding a photo of Mom and Dad by the nursery doorway.
I quietly stepped over to the crib, my hands resting on the edge as my eyes peered into it.
I was peacefully asleep, a small onesie keeping me warm. It was quite a strange sensation, witnessing yourself sleeping as only a baby. I was broken out of watching myself by a loud crashing sound outside the nursery.
I nearly jumped out of my skin, my eyes looking back down to find me still asleep. I must've been a heavy sleeper as a baby.
I hesitantly walked out of the nursery and found myself in a living room that led to a kitchen, where a slim figure was huddled in on herself. Her breathing was shaky, her dark hair was a mess, and red droplets of blood were falling from her palm. Broken shards of glass littered the floor, more than likely from a drink glass that fell from the counter.
I recognized Dad's figure hurrying to Mom, being careful to not step on the glass on the floor.
"Amelie, what happened?" He asked, eyes on the broken glass on the floor before noticing her bleeding palm. The glass on the floor was immediately forgotten as he took her hand in his, eyes scanning over her injury for shards of glass stuck in her skin.
"'M sorry," Mom began, her usually confident and clear voice shaky and soft. "I-I don't know what...I was just..."
My heart broke as I watched the woman my Dad had worshipped and loved for so long crumble in on herself.
"It hurts, Mark..." My mother whimpers, my father kissing the top of her head and gently pulling her towards the kitchen sink. He was careful with his movements, almost overly so. He knew she was cracking, his gentle touches and kisses trying to keep his beautiful glass sculpture from shattering.
"Shh, I'll make it better." He whispered, turning the kitchen faucet on and moving Mom's palm under the running water. The crimson blood began to wash away, Dad turning Mom's hand back and forth slowly. I watched on as Mom's fingers curled around my Dad's, a husband's eyes looking to his tired and worn wife.
"Not that." Amelie told her love, blue eyes looking more dull than I remember.
"Then what is it?"
"Everything." My mother sighs, leaning into my father's chest. "I feel everything. Like right now."
Dad didn't say anything, only wrapped an arm around Mom's waist and buried his face in her hair.
"Exactly 2384 people are living in the Cavern right now. 1342 of them are asleep. Mira is one of them. 572 of those not sleeping are teenagers. 153 of those teenagers are on their way to a party. 78 of those teens will drink-" Mom suddenly stopped and groaned, gripping Dad's shirt tight.
"My head is killing me...it's too much to keep track of. I feel like I'm going crazy, I can't take it anymore." She sounded like she was about to cry, and my eyes widened when I saw the kitchen cabinets began to open and close on their own, the lights flickering a little, and silverware and plates rattling in the cupboards.
"Shh, Amelie, you're okay." Dad mumbled, pressing kisses to Mom's forehead. The rattling and flickering soon stopped, nothing but the sound of my mother quietly crying left.
"Listen to me." Dad ordered, his thumb brushing away Mom's tears as he lifted her chin up to stare into his eyes. "You are the strongest girl I have ever known. You are the smartest girl I have ever known, and I know you know that too."
"That's not necessarily tru-"
"No, it is. Believe me, you're a million times smarter than I will ever be." Dad said, making Mom smile.
"You have an amazing talent. You're so strong and tough, you can handle anything that comes your way. And you know what?"
Mom looked up at Dad, watery eyes drying up a bit as she smiled.
"The little one is going to need you to be tough as nails." Dad whispered, kissing Mom's cheek. "She's going to need someone as smart and talented as you to help her as she grows up."
Mom nodded before hugging Dad tight, her previous anger and frustration forgotten as she turned to the broken glass on the floor.
She raised her arm up ever so slightly, twisting her wrist and curling her fingers. I watched in astonishment as the glass shards lifted up into the air and tossed themselves into the trash, my mother sporting a small smile as Dad stole a kiss from her afterwards.

My mind was still trying to figure out what my dream meant hours later, when I was waiting for Louis to meet me on my back porch so we could go to the movie festival in the park.
My favorite hiking backpack was now filled with a quilt and several packets of snacks, two pillows resting on my lap as I sat cross-legged on the wooden porch, my eyes fixed on the barely starry sky above me. It was a cloudy night, the crystals in the midnight fabric of the heavens unable to shine like usual. I supposed maybe that was better. We would able to see silver screen stars instead.
I had been thinking so much my head began to ache with a dull pounding, my fingers rubbing circles into my temple as I witnessed the light of my life step outside of the tree line.
Louis was smiling like usual as he approached me, leaning down to brush some wavy hair out of my eyes. I lazily smiled up towards him, my head still pounding from my own thoughts.
I closed my eyes as Louis tugged me to my feet, a sharp pain running through my head that made me wince. Louis noticed, head tilting to the side before his hand cupped my palm, thumb brushing over my cheek gently.
"Headache?" He whispered, my head nodding just a bit so I don't cause another rippling pain to rebound inside my skull.
"I can fix that." Louis whispered, his other hand brushing my hair back from my forehead before pressing his palm to it. My eyes never left his face, Louis giving me a soft smile before a golden glow lit up between us. My eyes fluttered shut as I felt the throbbing pain in my head lessen and lessen until it faded away completely, my eyes opening in wonder as Louis' touch left my face.
"Did you learn a new trick when you went to the Rift?" I asked, Louis chuckling as his fingertips trailed down my arms before squeezing my hands.
"I may have spent a little while in the healing center last time I was there. Picked up a few things." He spoke softly, before stealing a kiss from me. "I wanna keep you safe, and I figured I should be prepared in case something happens again."
Louis had given me a piggy-back ride to Briarwood park, my arms latched around his neck and my legs wrapped around his waist as he carried me. I had made him upset by teasingly kissing the back of his neck as we walked, Louis grumbling that if I didn't stop he would let me down so he could properly kiss me.
There was a decent number of people at the park, ranging from small families to older couples reminiscing on old favorite films. Blankets were scattered across the grassy field and a huge projector and screen had been set up for everyone to watch.
Louis had helped me lay out our quilt and pillows in a clear space away from other people, we didn't want to hear their talking or anything when we were watching. I had originally sat next to Louis, but my boyfriend seemed to not like that position as he had wrapped his strong arms around my waist and pulled me to him, his body warm and comforting around me.
His fingers had created little orbs of light for me to play with while we waited for the movies to start, his chuckle rumbling behind me as I attempted to catch the lights in my small hands. Every time I would open my closed fists, however, the light wouldn't be there, vanishing before I could see it again.
"Here," he softly spoke in my ear, his hands clasping mine together again. I felt the space between my closed hands grow warmer until Louis opened the little compartment we had made, a golden butterfly of light fluttering it's wings in my palms.
"It's so pretty." I admired the beautiful butterfly that had taken flight, soaring up towards the sky before dissipating into the night.
"Just like my Butterfly." Louis mumbled before kissing the soft skin on my neck, pulling the collar of my shirt to the side to press more kisses to my shoulder. The feel of his soft lips on me made me shiver, and I could feel Louis' lips curl into a smile as he pulled away.
The Sound of Music had been played first, but neither Louis or me really payed attention to the actors on the screen. Louis had laid back on the quilt, my body following his lead and cuddling up close to him. We shared a few sweet kisses until a thought came to me.
"Louis, have Luxiens ever fallen in love with Terrans before?" I asked quietly.
"Mira, we've discussed this. You're not a Terran, you were born in Lux."
"No, not me. I was just wondering." I explained, but that wasn't entirely true. I had seen Mom do an amazing talent in my dream, but I hadn't seen Dad do anything. What if Mom was a Luxien who fell in love with Dad, a Terran?
"I mean, I'm sure it's happened before. I don't know of anyone personally who has though." Louis said, his perplexed gaze on me. "Why?"
"Do the children of Luxien and Terran couples have powers?" I mumbled, Louis' mouth parting as he finally caught on to what I meant.
"You think your parents are a Luxien and Terran couple?" He asked, my head nodding as my gaze focused on the still cloudy sky above me.
"I had a dream last night, and you might think I'm crazy, but I saw them. I saw both of my parents in an apartment in Lux when I was a baby. Mom was upset and crying and she moved things with her mind. Dad didn't show any powers, so what if he doesn't have any?" I ranted, Louis sitting up as he listened.
"Wait, wait...you saw your parents when you were a baby? I thought most people couldn't remember anything before their third birthday." Louis spoke, becoming the victim of my annoyed glare when I realized that's all he heard.
"No, Mira, you don't understand. How many times has this happened?" Louis' tone was serious, his eyes wide with disillusionment.
"Like twice? Both times I was only a baby. But still, Louis, you weren't listening-"
"Mira that's a talent." Louis cut me off, eyes wide as he stared at me. My irritated emotions calmed to wonder as I sat up, my eyes wide.
"W-what?" I stuttered, Louis' shocked expression mirroring mine.
"Remembering things most people usually don't in crystal clear clarity is a talent. The people who have it are called memory keepers." Louis said, my heart picking up speed as I thought about my dreams. It was true, I could remember everything in extreme detail: the colors of the nursery, the view from my window, even the way the apartment smelled. However, one thing stumped me: how was I able to remember something I wasn't even awake to see?
"I can't be a memory keeper. In the dream last night I was asleep in my crib." I said somberly, but my boyfriend only shook his head and smiled a delirious grin.
"Memories are like germs," Louis explained, which made me crinkle my nose up in disgust at the comparison. "They spread through contact. You may not have been awake to see it, but you know someone who was."
Then it hit me: I had gotten the memory from Dad.
"Great memory keepers can absorb memories they never even experienced and see them later. The best can touch someone and immediately see a memory that person is thinking of." Louis laughed before playfully tackling me under him, kissing me deeply. I was taken by surprise until Louis pulled away. His happy glow was contagious, making me smile as well.
"See? You do have a talent, it's just a bit late."
