xii. Into the Ocean
I guess Dad had told Louis he was free to come over to the cabin whenever he wanted to in the future at dinner last night. And when I say whenever, I mean whenever since the doorbell rang when I was in my fluffy Hello Kitty pajama pants and an old t-shirt from New Mexico eating breakfast at the kitchen table.
I had stared at Dad with wide eyes, my spoon for my cereal still in my mouth before I rushed upstairs to hide. Dad only laughed before opening the door, and sure enough, Louis was there.
"Good morning, Louis." Dad called out a bit louder than he should've, knowing full well I was hiding behind the banister at the top of the stairs. I couldn't let Louis see me before I got dressed, I was pretty sure I would scare him with my "just rolled out of bed about ten minutes ago" appearance.
"Good morning, Mr. Lane. Is Mira here?" Louis asked.
"She's hiding at the top of the stairs because she doesn't want to scare you with her fluffy Hello Kitty pajamas and hair like Medusa." Dad said, making me repeatedly bang my head against the wooden banister in frustration before I got up and took off one of my bunny slippers and threw it at Dad's head. Unfortunately I have terrible aim, and the slipper hardly did any damage, rebounding off of Dad's back.
Louis laughed as he watched the slipper fall to the ground, his eyes looking up to see me as I rushed to get to my room. I hurried and closed the door, leaning against it as I heard footsteps coming up to my room. A knock was heard on the door, and I opened it just a crack to see Louis.
"Are you gonna let me in?" He asked with a smirk, laughing when I immediately said no.
"Well do you wanna go out today? I've got an idea of where we could go."
"Where?" I asked, Louis smiling bright.
"The beach."
I was confused at first. Who in their right mind goes to the beach when it's cold out?
"We don't need to swim or anything, just walk around." Louis promised, making me rethink.
"Can I have a few minutes to get ready?"
"Sure."
"Deal." I said before I closed the door and hurried to get myself dressed and ready. I pulled on a New Mexico University sweatshirt and some jeans, putting a beanie on my messy hair and grabbing my best winter coat to keep warm. I hurried down the stairs and put on my boots, finding Louis waiting for me on the couch. He laughed as he came up to me, poking my big jacket.
"Warm enough?" He chuckled as I nodded. Dad told me I could take the truck so long as I didn't wreck it, tossing me the keys and telling me to be careful.
Louis hopped in the passenger seat as I got in the driver's side, placing the keys in the ignition and starting the old truck. I had Louis tell me the directions to the beach, Louis complaining I was a terrible driver the entire way.
"Well I don't see you driving me anywhere, so you can't say anything." I argued as we reached a beach on the coast. The cloud croft made the beach seem to be colored in shades of dark blue and grey, the calming sound of the waves something I never heard back in New Mexico.
"That's only 'cause I don't have a car. I can drive perfectly fine...though I don't have official papers at the DMV." Louis admitted, hopping out quickly once I parked the truck and took the keys out. "I've never really needed to go very far from home before, so I never got an official license."
"Are you serious? How old are you?" I asked.
"Just turned twenty-three." He said, which surprised me. Sure, I figured Louis was older, but not three years (I gave myself a one-year-leeway since my twentieth birthday was in a month and a half).
"You're twenty-three and have no license?" I asked in disbelief, Louis only rolling his eyes before making faces at me as I couldn't help my light laughter. I had never heard of such a thing. Usually boys were always eager and determined to drive as soon as they turned sixteen. Louis must be the exception.
There were a few people at the beach, Louis eyeing them for a while before turning to me when I held his hand. Louis looked down the length of beach before leading me farther down the rocky coast, whispering in my ear when I looked back.
"They can't see what I can do. Only you can."
Wind blew around us as we walked down, making me shiver until it suddenly stopped. It took me a while to realize Louis was using his magical talents, diverting the chilling breeze away from me to keep me warm. He would bring my ice cold finger to his mouth occasionally to press kisses or blow over, shaking his head when my fingers would return to being cooler than the rest of my body.
"What?" I asked when Louis finally stopped, looking around the beach to make sure no one was around. When the coast was clear he snapped two of his fingers and created a spark, building it up a little before bringing my hands close to the warm flame. He never let me get too close in fear I could burn myself.
"I really need to buy you mittens or something." Louis shook his head jokingly as he tried to keep my hands warm, only for my heart to make them cold a few minutes later. I laughed as Louis exaggerated a huff before giving up, sitting down on the rocks like a pouty toddler. I sat next to him and leaned on his shoulder, Louis staring out at the ocean as we enjoyed the very different scene from our usual forest.
After a while, Louis held his left hand out towards the water, azure eyes focused on the choppy waves. I watched on in curiosity, my mind being blown as I saw the formerly huge and wild waves clam down until the ocean wasn't moving at all. Louis' hand started shaking after a while though, and soon his hand dropped to his side, his breathing heavy like he had just ran a marathon.
"Dang it. The moon's everlasting control of the tides wins again." He muttered, making me laugh before I leaned up and kissed Louis' cheek. Louis seemed to brighten up at that, looking at me with wild eyes and a huge grin.
"Do I get a kiss every time I try?" He asked cheekily, making me roll my eyes. We just talked for a while before I decided I wanted to know more about Louis and his powers.
"So you can control all the elements?" I asked, Louis nodding his head as his eyes became trained on the ocean again.
"It's common to be able to control one, but it's rare to control more than one. It's almost nonexistent to control all four." He explained before wrapping both of his arms around my waist and pulling me close to him. His chin leaned forward to rest on my shoulder, a sigh being heard from him as I thought over what he said.
"You said it's common to control one...does that mean there's others like you?"
"There are some. I'm considered rare and special from them though, and not just because I can control all four elements." Louis told me quietly, mumbling into my ear as he held me close. "According to my teacher, I have the unlimited potential of learning any talent I want to."
"Learning any talent?" I turned in Louis' arms to see his pretty face, Louis nodding and smiling softly at me.
"I can basically learn to do any talent. Sounds cool, but it's a lot of work." Louis sighed before kissing my cheek and returning his head to my shoulder as our gazes both turned to the dark and turbulent waves.
"What are you learning now?" I asked, my desire to know as much as possible about Louis turning our little chat into twenty questions.
"Electricity. My teacher is trying to get me to control energy circuits and be able to withstand currents running through my body without hurting myself." Louis said nonchalantly, but I was amazed.
"Can you show me that?" I begged him excitedly, but Louis quickly shook his head.
"I'm still learning it. Electricity is dangerous, it requires self-control I haven't mastered yet. The last thing I would want is to accidentally hurt you doing something stupid."
I didn't say anything, but deep down I understood. I respected Louis and the fact he wasn't reckless with his powers, he understood responsibility and when not to use his talents. As much as I was disapppointed to not see more of his amazing abilities, I knew eventually I would. Louis was smart, he would master electricity in no time.
"Well, there is one form of electricity I can control." Louis spoke suddenly, smirking as I turned my head to look at him.
Instead of speaking, Louis' lips caught mine off-guard, stealing the breath from my lungs and making me feel warm and alive inside. His hand caught the back of my neck and pulled me impossibly closer as the kiss was deepened, my eyes closing and my fingers reaching up to become entangled in his hair as we did nothing but savor the feel of our mouths moving together perfectly. Louis pulled away what felt like a short time later, taking enjoyment in the sight of my wide blue eyes and lungs struggling to catch a breath.
"I don't know about you, but I felt those sparks."
