viii. Starlight

I gripped the note like a lifeline as I carefully tiptoed my way downstairs that night. The last thing I would need is to wake my father up, who believed plenty of sleep was included in my health plan of relaxing.

I had changed into some jeans, a warm hoodie, and my hiking boots as quietly as possible, the air in the cabin colder than it had been when I went to bed. I shivered as I walked to the back porch, wincing as the old door creaked loudly when I pulled it open. I waited a moment to see if Dad had waken up, but he didn't come out of his room. I sighed in relief before stepping out onto the back porch, closing the door quietly behind me.

I shivered more as I looked around the dark yard for Louis, walking down the steps and onto the grassy yard before I saw him.

He was holding several blankets in one arm and two pillows under the other, a beanie on his head and several layers of jackets on to keep him warm along with his dark wash jeans and sneakers. I smiled before walking over to him, my arms wrapped tightly around me.

"Hey there." Louis smiled when he saw me, his smile shrinking a little when he saw me shivering. "Cold?"

"Y-yeah. It wasn't this cold when I was in town with my dad." I said, Louis only handing me the two pillows before taking one of the blankets he carried and draping it over my shoulders, my tiny hands clutching the edges tightly while trying to keep hold of the pillows in my arms. Louis laughed before taking the pillows from me and placing them back under his arms.

"Better?"

"Yeah. Thanks, Louis."

"No problem. Are you ready for your grand adventure of epic proportions?" Louis smirked before chuckling. "Well, it's not really an amazing adventure, but I thought it would be nice."

"What are we doing?" I asked him, looking at the pillows and blanket he carried.

"We, my magical Mira, are going stargazing." Louis informed me, placing the pillows under the arm he held the blanket with and slinging his other over my shoulders as he led me into the forest. I blushed as I tilted my head down to hide the smile that couldn't seem to vanish from my lips as we walked.

Louis led me to a clearing in the forest not far from the creek he had shown me a few days ago. It was a little grassy knoll with no trees around it on a high up hill, Louis wrapping his arm tighter around me as I peered over the ledge and saw the ground maybe twenty feet below the edge of the earth's drop. I almost wondered if he didn't want to have to create another cloud in case I fell off again.

Louis' arm released me so he could spread the other blanket he carried out on the grass, smoothing out any bumps or tossing any pebbles that could bother us to the side. He placed the two pillows down near the top of the quilt, sitting down on top of it before holding his hand out to me.

I took it as I sat down next to him, but Louis leaned back until his head was on top of the pillow, arms folded on his stomach as his sparkling eyes looked up at the stars above us. I followed his lead, removing the blanket from my shoulders before I laid down next to him. Louis helped me as I adjusted the blanket so it lay over the both of us, encasing me in warmth as I looked up at the glowing stars.

They really were dazzling, and it was amazing how clear the night sky was tonight. There was nothing to obstruct our view of the heavens, and my breath was taken away as I found myself captivated by the shimmering diamonds resting in the midnight sky.

"Do you know any of the constellations?" Louis whispered next to me, like he was afraid that if he spoke too loudly he would ruin the magical moment.

"I know the names, but I never remember what they look like." I admitted in a quiet voice, my eyes breaking their focus on the stars to stare at Louis. His eyes never left the starry sky, some of its light shining in his irises. I felt a gentle touch on my left wrist as his right hand raised it from the blankets and pointed it up to the sky, my fingers becoming lost in his larger ones.

"There," Louis pointed with our touching hands, my eyes looking up to see the little dipper shining brightly above us. "See that star at the end of the tail? The brightest one."

Louis let our hands fall back to the blankets, but quickly filled the spaces between my fingers with his own. My cold hand was warmed up by his as I never took my eyes off the bright star. "Yeah."

"That's Polaris. It's the North Star." Louis whispered, my eyes looking to the beautiful boy next to me as he bit his lip, eyes still trained on the sky as he looked for another constellation to show me.

"Oh, and that one. If you look directly left of Polaris, that's Cassiopeia, the little cluster right there." Louis pointed with our fingers again, my breath being stolen away from me as he let his fingers release my hand and drag down my wrist and forearm gently as he adjusted where my hand pointed until my eyes fell upon the sequence of stars. His touch felt like the faintest ghost of fingertips on skin, my heart picking up speed with the electricity he gave me.

We were in our own little world, just me and him as we lay under the stars that people have been admiring for eons. Suddenly there was nothing else but us two and the constellations, Louis pointing me to different ones and explaining their meaning. I would only nod as he asked if I could see the wonders he pointed to, my heart content with nothing more than just being with Louis as we lay on an old quilt and looked at the stars.

"That's Perseus right there, he was a famous warrior in ancient Greece." Louis continued speaking, a small smile on my lips as I raised our intertwined hands up so I could curl up into Louis' side.

Louis seemed taken aback, even pausing his stargazing lesson as he looked down at me in surprise. I smiled at him, Louis unable to stop the returning smile at me as released my fingers to drape his arm around my shoulders and pulled me closer to him. I placed my hand on his chest as I laid next to him, inhaling his smell and savoring in his warm embrace. I had always been cold until I found Louis, and now I couldn't get enough of the warmth he brought into my life.

Louis' heartbeat was strong under my hand, my weak one struggling to barely keep time with his. I sighed as Louis continued whispering to me, my eyes closing as I listened to him talk until I spoke.

"What about you? What kind of great adventures have you had?" I asked, Louis looking down at the girl laying next to him.

"Too many to say in one night." He answered as his hand moved from my shoulders to my back, fingertips tracing whimsical patterns as he watched my eyes struggle to stay open. I had no idea how long we had been out, but I knew it had to be at least an hour.

"Well then what about your powers?" I asked again.

"What about them?"

"What else can you do besides make clouds?" I yawned, Louis' fingertips tracing designs on my back were making me sleepy.

"I can do lots of things. I can control the elements, that's why I could catch you. Clouds are made of water droplets, all I had to do was condense them fast enough to catch you when you fell." He softly spoke, my eyes closing as I hummed in response.

"Sounds complicated." I mumbled, making Louis chuckle softly.

"It's not that hard when you've practiced all your life." He said, his other hand reaching for mine on his chest. His fingers wrapped around it, making me open my tired eyes as I watched him bring it to his lips and kiss the inside of my wrist. My heart fluttered with the intimate sensation before Louis brought his mouth to my knuckles and placed another kiss there. He let my hand rest back on his chest as he spoke again.

"I can move heavy boulders with just one thought, I can start a fire with a snap of my fingers, I can make a kite fly without a breeze." He whispered, my eyes unable to stay open as I felt myself nearing sleep. I'm not sure when I actually fell asleep, but I knew it must have been in the grassy clearing because when I woke up I was being carried bridal style in Louis' arms, the blankets wrapped around me and the pillows resting in my lap as he carried me back home.

We reached the cabin soon after I woke up, Louis smiling as he carefully placed me back on my feet, catching the pillows before they could fall to the ground. He laughed softly at my dazed and dreamy look I gave him, my mind still half-asleep as I stared at his beautiful face.

"You took me on an adventure, now it's my turn." I mumbled sleepily, yawning after I finished my sentence. Louis raised his eyebrows humorously as he smiled.

"Alright. Where are we going Magical Mira?"

"To Briarwood's main street. There's some stores and an ice cream place that's really good..." I yawned again before I could finish talking, my hand covered by the blankets reaching up to rub my eyes like a toddler who needed a nap.

Louis smiled as he nodded. "Then it's settled. You can show me all the places you love on Briarwood's main street tomorrow afternoon okay?"

I nodded and turned to go back inside, but Louis reached out and spun me around to face him again. I was too tired and sleepy to keep my eyes open as I felt Louis' hands disappear from my sides. I thought he had left before I felt the softest touch on my lips and heard the softest of voices whispering.

"Goodnight, Mira. Sleep tight."

I had opened my eyes afterwards but Louis was gone, my fingertips reaching up to my lips before tracing over them. Did Louis kiss me? Had that really just happened? Did I imagine it?

I stood there for a few minutes dumbstruck until a chilling breeze broke me from my trance, my body turning to get inside and back to my warm and comfy bed immediately after. I dreamed of Louis whisking me through the stars that night, letting him be my guide through the heavens while I enjoyed the ride.
