liv. Deal
I was falling.
For a moment, all I saw was a tunnel of shades of blue, swirling together and flying past me as I fell down, down, down. My body was heading towards a black hole at the bottom of the tunnel, my hair whipping back behind me and my eyes widening as I got closer and closer to the opening of the black hole. I didn't scream, didn't make a single sound other than a soft gasp as I fell into the black hole.
The room I fell into was pitch black. I couldn't see a thing, my nerves rattling as I landed harshly onto some kind of solid ground. I gave a tiny groan of pain before standing up, my heart racing when I tried to hold my hand up. I couldn't even see the outline of my hand, it was so dark. There wasn't a single trace of light anywhere.
Just then, the entire room around me lit up in shades of black, white, and grey. Scenes flashed on the walls around me like an old movie player, and my curious eyes widened when I saw they were memories. Louis' memories.
I was a time traveler, zipping through Louis' childhood memories like they were my own. I saw everything: saw Lou's first steps, heard his first word, saw him attend school for the first time, saw him play football with his school team, saw him grow up. I was flying through memories I never knew Louis had, like when he punched a kid in the face who was bullying another boy when he was barely a teenager. I saw the love he held for his parents, for his adoptive family that was closer than a birth mother could ever be to him. I saw all of that, but the memories on the walls stopped at one in particular for some reason.
Louis was lounged out on the couch in a warm sweater and jeans, watching the television. He must have been watching some kind of movie because I saw an empty bowl with several un-popped popcorn kernels resting on the bottom and a movie case was laid open on the table. He looked rather relaxed until his adoptive mother rushed into the living room.
She didn't say anything as she swiftly grabbed the remote and changed the movie to the local news, Louis groaning in complaint before he saw what the headline for the news was.
'Local firefighters trapped in apartment fire' ran across the bottom, Louis looking to his distraught mother with wide eyes.
"Mum...is Dad..." Louis couldn't form a coherent sentence, but he didn't need to. Louis' mother was rushing to throw on boots and grabbing a winter coat, ordering Louis to do the same. The two hurried to get in the car, speeding away from the house towards the destination that the news had scrolled along the bottom of the television.
Time flashed forwards and I stood before a scene of a burning building. There was a fire truck to the side pulled up to the curb, the firefighters rushing to get a hose connected to a fire hydrant to put out the burning flames. A crowd had formed along the edge of the street, police officers trying to keep the crowd calm and free from distress, though it wasn't helping much.
My head turned to see a car speeding down the road, stopping on a dime and being shut off as Louis and his mother ran out towards the burning building. Tears were already falling from Louis' mother's cheeks, and her panic only increased as a cop held her back from where she was trying to cross the yellow tape set out to keep bystanders back.
"Miss, you can't go any further." the police man informed her, but Louis' mother was far too upset to care about rules.
"Please, my husband is trapped in there! He's a fire fighter and he's trapped in the building!" She rushed out, Louis's eyes wide as he looked at the blazing orange and red flames taking over the building and the huge smoke column climbing higher into the air.
"Ma'am, I understand that, but you have to stay back." The police officer tried to calm her down, but she only turned and cried into Louis' shoulder. I found the expression on Louis' face strange; it wasn't one of fear, but rather determination. His eyes were calculative, looking over the building and the fire it was consumed with.
Louis gently pushed his mother away from him, looking right into her eyes as he held her hands tight.
"Mum, it'll be okay. Just wait here." He promised before taking off towards the burning building. He was too quick for the police to stop him as he ran right into the entrance of the building, vanishing within the orange haze. His mother screamed as I watched his act of bravery, my own heart pounding fast as the memories followed him into the flames.
Louis used his own talents to keep him from the flames, his hands holding small orbs of water ready to extinguish any flames that leaped out at him. He was careful as he maneuvered around the rooms, always on the watch for falling debris or anything else that could cause him harm. He would cough as smoke got into his lungs, but he pressed on.
Soon enough, he stopped on the edge of a room, his eyes dead set on a crumpled form in one of the corners. I recognized Louis' adoptive father, unconscious and trapped under a bookshelf that must have collapsed and fallen on top of him.
"Dad!" Louis had rushed over to him before using his earth talent to push the bookshelf off of his father. He was quick to pull him up, taking one of his arms over his shoulder as Louis began to hurry out of the burning apartment that was sure to collapse at any moment. I was amazed as he made it out of the building safe and sound, though he began coughing tremendously and fell to his knees right after. Paramedics were quick to take Louis' father, soon returning to take a barely breathing Lou into another ambulance right after.
Time moved forward again to show Louis had been admitted to the hospital to treat him for severe smoke inhalation. He lay in a hospital bed with his mother crying tears of joy next to him. A kiss was given to his forehead before his mother promised to come back after seeing his father, leaving Lou to sleep peacefully. Just as she left, two male nurses came in to check on him. My eyes narrowed as I saw one close and lock the door, an observation that didn't go unnoticed by Louis either. The other man walked over to him, turning to look back at his partner.
"Allister wants this one?" He asked, the answer being a small nod. The man gave a sinister smile to Louis, whose fear could be heard on the heart monitor he was connected.
"Don't worry, Nox will take good care of you." The man assured Louis before his comrade came over to Louis' bedside. Louis' oxygen mask was removed before one man pressed a cloth over his nose and mouth, the other man holding poor Lou down to the bed as they waited for the drug to knock him out.
Louis writhed and tried screaming, but it was clear that he wasn't going to win this fight. His eyelids were drifting shut, and his limbs were giving out. Just as he was about to fall unconscious, both men suddenly flew into the opposite wall, their bodies falling like rag dolls to the floor as they blacked out. My head turned to see a younger Minerva and Liam in Louis' doorway, Minerva's talent having saved Louis.
Both of them rushed to his bedside, Liam helping a protesting Louis out of bed. Poor Lou couldn't fight back or say much, and Liam had to practically carry his weight as he made a blue teleportation vortex in the hospital room. Just before they jumped in, Minerva took Louis' face in her hands, her eyes staring right into his.
"Everything will be okay, Louis. I promise." She told him before Louis's eyes couldn't stay open anymore, and the three of them vanished into the teleportation vortex.
The room suddenly turned black, as if there were no other memories for me to see. I didn't mind though, since my mind was full of thoughts and realizations. That one time when Louis said a friend of his had been tracked by Nox through hospital records, he was talking about himself. Nox found Louis through hospital records, Louis had been talking about his own experience.
My heart lurched as I realized just how much Louis had been through in his life, and he was barely in his twenties. He had experienced a lifetime's worth of pain and hurt, and he still had a lifetime to live.
How could I have never known?
I felt like crying. Louis had been through so much, and now if I didn't save him it would all be for nothing. I had to stop Allister, Louis didn't deserve anything bad in the world. I would gladly spend the rest of my life making sure he was only surrounded by good things. I would make him his favorite meal everyday just to see him smile, I would paint the world in a shade of blue to match his bright eyes, I would do anything for him. I had to get the love of my life back.
I took in a deep breath as I clenched my fists, a newfound determination burning within me to find Louis.
Just then, a strange light glowed in the middle of the room. I watched in awe as two beings appeared before me, one shrouded in darkness and the other in bright light. Their heights were identical, their muscular physique conveying their masculinity. A strange glow lit the space around them, their bodies glittering like a toddler had dropped a bottle of craft glitter all over them. They had similar features: the same sharply angled noses, the same thin lips, even the same amused expression. It was almost as if they were twins; they were exactly the same if you disregarded the color of their skin and eyes.
"Mira Lane." The pale one smiled, his skin glistening so brightly it almost seemed translucent.
"We have some important business to discuss." The dark one smirked, his eyes staring over me and making me shudder. His irises were almost a maroon color, and they reminded me far too much of Allister's burning red.
"Who are you?" I asked, both taking glances to each other before looking back to me.
"You will learn soon enough." The light one spoke, my mind racing with possibilities. They certainly weren't human, their looks proved that. Did that mean they were more than human? Were they spirits?
"What kind of business are you talking about?" I mumbled, the dark one nodding and stepping closer to me. His fingertips barely grazed my shoulder, running over the fabric of my shirt before trailing down my back. I stepped away from him quickly, and he chuckled darkly.
"Our mother would like to propose a deal to you." The dark one continued, my eyes looking back and forth between him and his brother. Their mother...could they mean?
"Fate wants to make a deal with me?" I asked in shock, both twins nodding in unison.
"Mother is especially interested in you and Louis Tomlinson. Why, we did not ask. It is only our job to offer the deal to you, and then report your answer to Mother." The pale one informed me, the dark one returning to his brother's side.
"Mother sends us to make all her transactions, seal her deals, do her bidding. She made it seem like this particular exchange was very important to her." The dark one tilted his head curiously. I got the feeling their usual deals were insignificant compared to mine.
"So what's the deal?" I asked, but of them smiling at me as they stepped closer.
"Before we give you your deal, there are two things you must keep in mind." the light one said.
"In any deal, there is always risk," the dark one started.
"And reward." the lighter other beamed at me. They were so alike they could finish each others' sentences.
"Risk and Reward." I repeated, looking in awe at the spirits before me. Both were equal, both deserved to be taken equally into consideration, but in the end one could impact you more than the other. I understood their looks now.
"The risks for this deal are quite simple." Risk began, still looking me over. "Should you not accept it, Louis Tomlinson will never be the same after being possessed. He will be the most brainless Sorcerer to ever exist, and there's nothing more we could do about it. He will spend the rest of his pathetic life in the condition you've experienced, never the same as before. I suppose if you say yes, there's also risks to you, but those aren't quite as severe as the former."
"The rewards would be that Louis Tomlinson's soul would be completely restored to his body and that he will be the same as before." Reward told me. That was quite the ultimatum, what on earth was this deal?
"And now that we have presented you both sides, here is the deal Mother is prepared to make with you." Reward started, turning to his brother to finish his thoughts. I braced myself for something shocking or controversial.
"She will restore Louis Tomlinson's soul to the way it was before, if you promise her something in return." Risk told me.
"What kind of promise?"
"We cannot give you details, only tell you the number three." Reward said. I didn't respond as I thought about it a bit. That's it? Three? What did the number three have to do with any of this?
"Three?" I asked for confirmation, both Risk and Reward nodding at the same time. "...like the math number three? Or three of something?"
Both of them exchanged a look before they turned back to me. I huffed and rolled my eyes before asking again. "Just tell me, three what?"
"I believe you will figure out the answer." Risk coyly spoke, making me shoot him a glare. Reward seemed a bit more anxious about everything, his eyes looking back and forth from his brother to me.
"Do you accept the deal?" Risk asked, my eyes now trained onto his brother Reward.
"I would like to know what three means." I kept my intense gaze on Reward. He would break, surely.
I was surprised when he didn't, only shook his head to me.
"Do you accept the deal, Mira Lane?" Reward asked me. I was hesitant at first, what on earth did three mean? But then, if I could have Louis the way he was before, couldn't I risk not knowing what I had to give?
"I accept." I told Risk and Reward. Risk smiled before turning to take his leave, but Reward stayed. His pale white skin made him seem like a ghost, but a friendly ghost all the less.
"You're really not going to tell me what three means?" I asked stubbornly, determined to get some kind of clue. Reward only gave me a sad smile and shook his head.
"I'm afraid not. But now that you have accepted Mother's deal, I can say I look forward to quite an interesting future." Reward grinned before giving me a small bow. "Goodbye, Mira Lane."
And with that, both of them lit up and vanished into the same orb of light they came in, leaving me in total darkness once more. I waited, and just then a door opened at the edge of the dark room, a blue light visible beyond the doorway. Fate must work fast.
I ran towards the door, tears blurring my vision as I saw him.
Louis' body was slumped against a wall and bound with chains, the heavy shackles around his wrists, his ankles, his neck. He appeared to be unconscious, his pretty eyes closed and his breathing heavy.
"Lou." I barely whispered as I ran over to him. The chains broke as I approached him, and I wrapped my arms to hold him tight and keep him from falling.
"You're safe, I've got you." I whispered to him, holding his limp body impossibly close, my hand on the back of his head as I kissed him hard. Just when my lips touched his, my vision changed.
I saw everything: things that had happened already as well as things I had never seen before. I saw when Louis saved me with the cloud, I saw when we first kissed after stargazing, I saw when we said I love you, but it was after that that I saw things I had never experienced before.
I saw Louis dressed smartly in a suit and sat at the end of a conference table as people from around the world asked him questions from their seats.
I saw me laughing and hanging out in a bar with all my girl friends, cocktails in our hands and a glittering diamond on my ring finger.
I saw how beautiful Louis was when my lips painted in shade of cranberry and blushing pink over his naked skin, felt how much I could need a person with both body and mind as our hips collided under the bed sheets.
I heard a heartbeat pounding in my ears, delicate and soft while my eyes were flooded with a dark blue-mauve color. Another heartbeat was followed with a bright yellowish gold, and a last one showed me an emerald green.
My vision returned to normal, my eyes rapidly blinking away the fog to see Louis move ever so slightly, groaning as he tried to stretch out his limbs. I couldn't help myself from kissing him again, my eyes seeing his open when I pulled away. My tears fell freely now as I hugged him tight.
"I've got you, Lou." I whispered as I held him close, feeling his hands slowly wrap around my back.
"Y-you did it." I heard him barely mumble, a small smile on his lips as we savored each other's touch.
We didn't have long to relish in being together. Suddenly, a bright light shone above us like a headlight, illuminating both of us. Louis winced and buried his face into my shoulder as I squinted my eyes and looked up. I guess our fight wasn't over.
"What is that?" Louis asked as he shielded his eyes using me. I turned my gaze from the bright light to my soul mate, both of our eyes locked onto each others'.
"I don't know, but whatever it is, we can handle it." I promised as I held him tight, feeling both of us suddenly lift up and levitate into the bright light above us.
