Epilogue
Several years later...
Mira Tomlinson was humming to the tune of the radio playing softly in the kitchen of her apartment. Her hands were hard at work chopping up vegetables on a cutting board, her quick feet moving around the kitchen to get ingredients and tools she would need to make dinner.
Her flurry of motion was quite the entertainment for the little baby boy sitting comfortably in his high chair. He was teething at a set of plastic imitation car keys as he watched, big blue eyes watching his mother run around.
He would occasionally babble or laugh to himself as he watched Mira prepare dinner, his gummy mouth opening to reveal a single tiny bottom tooth he had just gotten. His tiny dark blue beanie covered his head, but some dark tufts of hair poked out from the sides still. His comfy grey onesie kept him warm from the chilly winter outside, and Mira could see his tiny toes curling inside the extra socks she had put on him.
She smiled at her six month old once she finished preparing the soup Louis and her would have for dinner, going to the pantry and grabbing some of her son's baby food and a spoon to feed him dinner. Mira pulled a chair up to her baby, setting the spoon down on his little counter to pull the cover off of his applesauce.
The little one had grabbed the spoon and giggled at his mother, who smiled before taking the plastic spoon from his tiny grasp. Will had always loved applesauce, and had opened his mouth wide once he saw his mother hold the spoonful of puréed fruit out to him.
Mira had never understood why moms always made faces when they fed their babies until she had Will. Louis would always laugh at the ridiculous faces she would pull whenever she would feed their son, and Mira would only roll her eyes.
Will must have inherited his father's sense of humor, because the baby boy started giggling and dribbling applesauce down his chin and onto his clothes when Mira stuck out her tongue unconsciously.
"Oops, now we have to change." She told Will, who giggled in delight as Mira set the applesauce to the side and lifted him out of the high chair. With a glance to the clock, Mira realized it was almost time to go.
After quickly changing Will into something warmer and turning the heat off on the stove, her and Will set off towards the entrance to the Rift.
"Are you excited Will? Daddy's coming home today." Mira murmured to her son, who only babbled something unintelligible back.
Louis had been on a trip to a portal in Russia with Minerva for diplomatic purposes for the past week. Halfway through the week, Mira had gotten a text that Louis had come down with something and wasn't feeling well, so she would probably have to keep Will away from Louis until her husband was better. Today he was coming back, and Mira had soup and a warm, comfy bed ready for him back at home to rest and fight off his illness.
The walk to the edge of the Rift from the apartment wasn't long, and once Mira arrived, her heart was pounding with excitement to see her love again. She was sure Will was excited too, he was just getting impatient from the way he fiddled with his chubby fingers the small diamond pendent on her necklace she wore (it had been a first anniversary present from Louis).
Finally, they arrived.
First came Minerva, who was talking to an assistant over important matters as she was wheeled in the Rift in her telekinetic wheelchair. The important manners seemed to be forgotten as she spotted her granddaughter and great-grandson, taking Will into her arms and cooing at him. She handed the six-month old back reluctantly as another figure emerged from the shimmering barrier.
His nose was red, he was bundled up in jackets and he was wearing one of his and Will's matching beanies. It was obvious he was feeling poorly, but that still didn't stop the small smile on his face as he saw his wife and son approaching him.
Mira protected Will, watching as the golden runes spread onto his skin so Louis could hold him without Will getting sick. Louis took his son in his hands, holding him tight against his chest.
"Hey there, tough guy. Have you been keeping Mummy safe for me?" Louis cooed to his son, who tried speaking, but wasn't very successful. Louis still listened regardless, chuckling when his son pressed his palms to his father's cheeks. Will's big blue eyes watched how his father's mouth curved into a smile, a similar one reflected on the baby boy's.
Mira had no doubt in her mind that William would grow up to look just like his father. Everything about him resembled Louis: his big bluey greeny blue eyes, his hair, his name, even some of his talents. Mira had discovered Will could control water when she was bathing him one time, watching in wonder as the child made little fountains of soapy water to entertain himself.
Of course, Louis begged to differ. In his eyes, Will was just like his mother. The way his son laughed matched his wife's perfectly, and Louis could swear Will's blue eyes were turning darker, much like Mira's deep blues. Will had a stubbornness to match the infamous Lane's, though he tended to be well-behaved.
Louis held Will to his chest before leaning over to kiss the love of his life, the little one they had created not quite liking being sandwiched between them. Louis chuckled at his son, who stopped his whining once he saw his father again.
"Hey, there's nothing to be upset about." Louis assured Will, who blinked owlishly up at him. "Mummy and Daddy are here, nothing will hurt you."
"Come on, you need to get home to rest." Mira told her husband, taking his hand and walking her little family home.
~•~
That night was not going as smoothly as Mira had hoped. Will had gotten fussy and needed his diaper changed, and Louis' coughs only got worse as his fever got higher. Mira had gotten a bowl of chicken noodle soup for Louis, setting it and a spoon down on the coffee table in front of the couch, where he was laid out. Louis had thanked her profusely, insisting she needed to look after Will.
"He needs you more right now, I'm fine." Louis had tried to convince her, but it had only taken a few painful coughs for Mira to disagree.
So now here she was, stuck in a tug of war of trying to calm Will down and trying to tend to Louis.
Will was having a tiny temper tantrum, refusing to settle down and stop crying. He was wailing loudly, and he wouldn't stop no matter what Mira did. Mira had already changed his diaper, tried giving him his bottle, even gave him his favorite stuffed toy, but nothing helped. He wasn't sleepy, Will usually just fell asleep when someone held him or when he was placed in his crib, and neither worked.
"What's wrong, sweetie? You're not getting sick, are you?" Mira felt his forehead for a temperature, but he didn't feel particularly warm.
Mira had thought she had gone through everything in her mental list of why Will was crying, sighing and setting her baby down on his changing station in his nursery. Maybe his onesie was uncomfortable?
After grabbing some new pajamas for him, Mira unbuttoned Will's onesie and began to change him into a softer one covered in tiny giraffes. Just as she was about to gently pull Will's hand through the sleeve, she stopped when she saw something strange.
Her confusion turned into amazement, and she picked her baby boy up in his unbuttoned onesie to show her husband.
"Louis!" She exclaimed, hurrying over to where he laid on the couch. Louis was confused as Mira brought their child over to him, his hands held up to keep her back.
"Mira, I can't be by him, I don't want him getting sick." Louis tried to say, but Mira ignored him, bringing Will over.
"He won't. He needs his father." She handed Will over to his dad, Louis' weak protests being pushed to the side.
"Mira, no-" Louis tried again, but was silenced as Mira held Will's arm out for Louis to see.
Louis' tired eyes widened as he stared at the glistening blue-green traces of runes forming on Will's tiny wrist.
"He needs his father to heal them. That's why he's been crying so much." Mira smiled. "He needs a healer to heal his runes."
"He's a protector." Louis realized in astonishment. His hand had gently wrapped around Will's wrist as he healed the small runes, Will's cries dying down and stopping once the harsh pain stopped.
"He's a protector." Mira repeated happily as she sat down next to her husband on the couch, her hand resting on his arm as she couldn't seem to believe it. No longer did she have to worry about what would happen to the Rift without her, because Fate had blessed her with a son who was quite literally one in a million, maybe even a billion.
Mira liked that: one in a billion. Her son was one in a billion, one to be admired and looked up at for years to come. As she thought about her family's future now, she couldn't help but remember Reward's message to her years ago.
'I can say I look forward to quite an interesting future,' Reward had said. Suddenly everything was making sense to Mira, puzzle pieces were falling into place. Mira kissed her baby boy's cheek as her heart fluttered from happiness in her chest.
The next generation's protector was here, the one person who would someday hold the world in the palms of his hands, and Mira couldn't wait for that day to come.
A/N: Sorcery is now officially over! *throws confetti everywhere*
But for all of you probably crying because this story has come to an end, I have a surprise for you....
Cue drumroll...
THE SORCERY SEQUEL IS NOW POSTED!
For the past month or so I have been working on a sequel story while writing Sorcery, so everything is all planned out and some chapters have even been finished. This sequel is not as long as Sorcery (probably about 30 chapters or so), and is called Protector (some of you may have seen it accidentally when Megan was reading chapters and accidentally hit 'publish' instead of the 'save' button...*cough cough Cazza*, or maybe you saw Megan working on the cover in one of her cover making sessions).
Regardless of if you have seen/heard of it before, I'm super excited about it since it revolves around Will and some very special supporting characters.
Vote, comment, and go read Protector! -Maddie
