Chapter 3
The cafe is bustling with students and I even spot a few from our class, including Keefe, Fitz and Biana sitting together and Stina and her gang in a table.
Dex and I take a seat near the back.
"What would you like?" asks a waitress.
"A strawberry smoothie, please." I say with a smile.
"A hot chocolate for me." says Dex. I smile at his choice - I would have chosen that if a strawberry smoothie wasn't available. After ordering, I snuggle into my chair and start reading my book. Dex on the other hand is fiddling with his phone. I look up to see it taken apart into a million tiny pieces.
"What happened to your phone!" I exclaim in shock, nudging the small pieces away from the edge of the table.
"Nothing. I just wanted to see if I could put it back together." he shrugs. I smiled. We begin talking about our day in school. Right as I finish telling him about Tam and Linh, I feel a hand on my shoulder. I turn around.
"Hi Sophie." is all the dark haired boy says. I squint, confused and then I realise who it is.
"What do you want Fitz?" Dex snaps, slightly surprising me with his tone.
"I wanted to talk to Sophie." replies FItz as he sits down next to me. I shift uncomfortably as he leans on our table and looks into my eyes.
"You got a 100 on the test right? Could you give me a few pointers?"
"You mean like tutor you?" I ask. He nods with a smile.
"Isn't Keefe your best friend? Why don't you ask him?"
"Isn't it obvious? It's the troublemaker against the smart and pretty new girl. Ugh. Go away, Fitz." Dex interrupts, rolling his eyes.
I look at Dex and then Fitz waiting for a reaction when a familiar blonde head pops up from behind Dex.
"Aww, are you guys fighting over me?" says Keefe. Simultaneously, everyone rolls their eyes and I try to hide a small smile.
"Well, can we study together?" Fitz asks me. I look at him suspiciously. I'm kind of on Dex's side on this one.
"What about me? Can I come too?" Keefe says smirking and Fitz shoots him a glare.
"Please?" he says, looking at me.
"You know what, we should all study. Together," I say sarcastically, gesturing to Fitz, Keefe, and Dex.
"You know what? Add in Tam too. I bet it'll be fun for you huh? Making one girl's life miserable?" I exclaim, sighing and standing up.
"Come on, Dex," I say as I grab my smoothie to go and pull Dex out of the Cafe.
We get into my car and I'm about to drive away when I see a hot pink car screech to a stop in front of mine.
"Hey!" I yell in frustration. The door opens and a pretty dark-haired girl comes out.
"Get out of my way," she says, as she walks past me, her hair blowing into my face.
"Who the hell is that?" I ask, turning towards Dex.
"That, my friend, is Rachel. Rachel Dempsey. Foxfire's most popular piece of trash," he replies.
"Dempsey. Dempsey as in Stewart Dempsey? The most well-known pilot in the world?!" I almost yell, stunned. He nods and I watch as she walks into the cafe. Everyone turns their heads towards her. The guys stare (it's not a surprise, she's very very very good looking...) and the girls just whisper to each other.
"She's the hottest girl on campus. Not only for her looks, but also her parents. It's unfair," Dex complains... as we get back into the car and I start reversing. On the way out, I slightly scratch Rachel's car.
"Nice. I wonder what she'll say when she finds it like that," Dex says, grinning. I grin back.
Soon, we're heading towards my house and I ask Dex to fix my ipod. It recently stopped working and I don't know how to fix it. I thought he might. I love that thing... my parents got it for me as a going-away gift.
We reach the apartment and I park my car. It's not a bad looking car. Sure, it isn't a hot pink Porsche, but it's a second-hand black Chevrolet and I like it.
I open the door and we go inside. "This is probably the neatest looking apartment I've ever been to!" Dex exclaims.
I blush, "I like things organized."
I heat up his hot chocolate and we sit there sipping our drinks for a while talking about school when he points to a room and asks, "Is that your bedroom?" I nod and show him in.
He looks around. Though there's not much to look at other than a couple of posters on the wall, all of my favorite pilots, Stewart Dempsey included, a bunch of books on a shelf and a desk with my notebooks on it. He's moved on to my cupboard. I've decorated it with a bunch of quotes my mother gave me on my 14th birthday. "Ugh, they're really cheesy... Come on," I say, pulling him away.
"What? I like them," he says smiling. He looks at them again.
"Do they help?" he asks. I tilt my head in confusion.
"I mean do they make you feel better? Does it really work?"
I nod. "They're actually really motivational," I reply. After a while I add, "Do you want one? Think of it as a thank you gift for showing me around Foxfire and being a really great best friend."
His eyes widen in surprise.
"Go on, pick one," I urge. His eyes dart across all of them and then they land on one of my favorites.
"In the end, we only regret the chances we didn't take," he says.
"It's all yours," I say, looking into his bright blue eyes. He opens his mouth to speak but closes it again and takes my hand.
"Thank you," he says at last. I smile again.
I remember my hand is in his and gently pull it out, "Oh, I forgot about giving you my iPod." He nods and I pick it up from on my desk and hand it to him.
"Can you fix it?" I ask as he looks at it.
"I don't think it's that big of an issue... Maybe I need to... Nah, it can't be the..." he mutters and I look at him in confusion. He smiles, "Don't worry. It's nothing I can't fix."
I nod and we go out and back to the car. It takes us another 15 min to reach the campus. He lives in the dorms.
"You want to come over for dinner? I've got a bunch of cup noodles lying somewhere. I know it's not the best..." he says when we reach.
"Sure, it's better than eating cup noodles alone, I reply with a smile.
We take the stairs to his room, #02-04.
"Welcome to the Ice Castle!" he says, opening the door. Before he finishes, I ask, "Ice Castle?"
"Well, most of the time, the air conditioner is always under 18 degrees and also because it reminds me of home," he says. He smiled again at my confusion and opened the door.
It was a pretty nice room... but it looked like almost everything was out of place from a bunch of electronics on the bed to a bunch of crumpled papers on the ground.
And the most shocking of all... a blonde boy on the second bed, reading.
"What's he doing here?" I demand. "Oh," Dex says, "I forgot to tell you... Keefe's my roommate..."
I widen my eyes in surprise and sputter, "What?!" just as Keefe looks up from his book.
"Hey! It's the pretty girl!" he exclaims and grins. I roll my eyes as I walk up to Dex's bed, gently nudge his gadgets to a corner and sit down.
"You know, it would have been nice if you had told me he's your roommate," I say sourly, "I've never seen you two even talk to each other in school..." Keefe's grin widens.
"That's because we have a strictly classified friendship. Diznee here is a troublemaker at heart," he says. I widen my eyes and look to Dex.
"I helped him with one of his pranks... it was only once though..." he tries to explain. I stare incredulously.
"So... Anyone up for dinner?" Keefe asks, holding up a bunch of cup noodles.

So... I'm mean for waiting so long... I'll try to post soon... but don't hold me to that... Have a great day though :) Thanks for reading!
